Rereading TM on heating Manhattan office buildings:

So in Manhattan (or San Francisco) the powers that be planned ahead. Hobo chips are a good fuel for warmth.

sbwaters,

Reading that article on Brexit, I can tell you that there were plenty of people in London and Canterbury who opposed the EU when my sister and I were over there for the Queen's Jubilee.

It amazes me that the "elites" of the UK or the USA do not understand that if they do not honor the voters' wishes, the rule of law will disintegrate.

It's just distressing to read about. I always thought that people who talked about an upper class, or an elite class, or an entrenched bureaucracy, were simply paranoid.

Now I find out it is real, and we are stuck with having to get rid of these terrible people. It's extremely disheartening.

Narciso79

Its the same wretched sort, uniparty from far left like hilary benn, and top man right like ben burt.

The Giants were worse than I feared. The defense is not merely bad, it’s horrific. They’re not a legitimate NFL caliber team at this point, and frankly the ownership ought to be refunding the season ticket holders.

We seem to be on the verge of both the US and Britain telling the "intelligentsia" that their impression of their own intelligence is sadly misplaced.

I agree with you. I am sick of these elitists, and I can provide a list of 50 others who are as well.

I think there are so many who are disgusted, plus so many elite who haven't a clue about how the average person thinks, that we are in for some rough times.

Another Bob may have mentioned this before but if not, a week after a Formula 2 guy was killed and the guy who hit him is an induced coma an Aussie Formula 3 driver hit an innocuous piece of curb and was launched 20 feet in the air doing a double backflip landing right on the cockpit.
Walked away but has a cracked vertebra.
Miracle [and a halo] he didn't die.

Narciso79

Thats incredible.

Found out today that our church is running relief supplies to the satellite in the abacos.

jimmyk

Happy Birthday, MM!

Was traveling today, so only caught the 5th set of the amazing US Open final. Was pulling for Medvedev, but have to admit Nadal was just relentless and a magician.

Another Bob

I did Ig.

The innocuous curb was a so-called “sausage kerb”, specifically placed there to prevent drivers from deriving advantage from running wide. This created some outcry to remove them as unsafe, and replace the paved runoff with gravel or grass. (Paving runoff being done due to outcry that gravel was too punitive and grass is unsafe. Sigh.)

There were a couple hard hits in the NASCAR race today that are getting our overly risk-averse population (and at least one race driver) whining.

Auto racing as we know it will be dead in ten years.

Ignatz Ratzkiwatzki

Anything is better than that sausage curb. His car looked exactly like one of those idiotic car wrecks on the A Team or other goofy 80s shows where they would place an obvious ramp there to shoot the thing into the sky in a slow-mo death spiral.

That it did.

The kerb accomplishes the goal. But yeah, maybe it’s not for high-speed curves like Parabolica.

LeClerc drove a pretty good race for himself today. Just refused to crack under the Mercedes pressure.

Narciso79

That seems ill considered, even at normal speeds that is fraught with danger.

Vettel got the #1 seat at Ferrari and promptly lapsed into Schumacher mode - all about him. Bringing in LeClerc and not obviously forcing him into the permanent secondary role (as was done to Barrichello and Raikonnen) was the beginning of the end of Vettel at Ferrari, and he knows it. I’m wondering if he doesn’t end up back at Red Bull.

When all of the people pushing so hard for Criminal Justice Reform were unable to come even close to getting it done, they came to me as a group and asked for my help. I got it done with a group of Senators & others who would never have gone for it. Obama couldn’t come close....

“Why would racing be a thing of the past?”

Long exposition could follow, but boiled down...

Too much money in the sport resulting in: 1) sanctioning bodies turning it into a TV show, 2) (most acutely in F1) only *very* well funded teams stand a chance of winning, and 3) it’s an increasingly expensive prospect to attend a race in person, and attendance is in substantial decline.

Real risktaking has become a bad thing, and a safety uber alles attitude is turning it into a “bumper cars” sport. Who pays to watch bumper cars?

Mostly in NASCAR which was built of a “regular guys” image, the drivers are increasingly becoming wealthy, elitist “celebrities”.

James D.

If AG Barr signed off on this, he should be fired:

Must've been the 4AM drop, today.

Another Bob

Which reminds me: NASCAR has also developed a “Drive for Diversity” program. It hasn’t exactly forced tons on women/minorities into the sport, but is another sign of the corporate capture.

Melinda

And the drop off in Exports is to be expected, since what was once manufactured overseas had to be shipped in for final sale, now gets manufactured here. So that little statistic becomes less meaningful. If there's "No CapEx!!11!!", why are earnings for US companies remaining strong, unless there are steady Capital Expenditures, unless of course, your corporation relied on cheap Chinese parts to stay afloat. Those companies aren't doing as well, as the system readjusts from decades of added politically convenient complexity.
