Dylan Matthews of Vox boldly goes where no prog has gone before and learns about guns. Good effort, although I think the coverage of double action/single action was just showing off.
He does grasp the cosmetic nature of the "assault weapons" discussion, which gives me an excuse to recycle this pic of the Ruger Min-14 Tactical versus the Ruger Mini-14 Ranch. Per the proposed House Assault Weapons Ban of 2019 the Tactical is banned (per Appendix A, ifg I am following correctly); the John Wayne prop (OK, with a magazine protruding) is all aces. Fine, ban the Tactical and potential buyers will hit their gun stores with "I'm only here for the Ranch".
Does any of this change Mr. Matthews mind on anything? He does not say but let's not underestimate the power of knowledge - Leah Libresco of 538 and the WaPo surprised herself after doing some homework on gun control.
RECYCLING!

Trump is still fighting the Orange Man Bad Bunch (hello Hit And Run on twitter) calling him a liar about how Dorian was at one point projected to possibly extend as far west as Alabama. Like I pointed out yesterday, go here https://www.nhc.noaa.gov/refresh/graphics_at5+shtml/151450.shtml?gm_track and take a gander at advisories 27a and 26a.
Posted by: Dave (in MA) | September 05, 2019 at 10:33 AM
My 15 year old daughter watches the news almost every morning. She then asks me about the stuff that doesn't make sense.
Today's question came after she watched CBS national news breathlessly report on the hurricane map with the extended outline over Alabama. Someone in the report suggested that tampering with the map is a federal crime or some such nonsense.
Her question:
"Why are they so mad about the added black line when the rest of the map was wrong anyways?"
Good point. The unaltered map shows Dorian blasting straight across Florida.

Since everyone seemed to get Dorian wrong, that's an odd thing for the NTs to fixate on. Must be because the economy is doing well.
Posted by: Captain Hate | September 05, 2019 at 10:53 AM
Speaking of advancing glaciers, progs like to pretend they are ruled by science and their very term climate change indicates their realism and open mindedness.
Think about their actual desires though. There is no conclusion to come to other than they wish for the impossibility of climate stasis. They want to stop the rise of the sea level. But even if they could, would they then countenance a falling sea level that leaves their beach front homes high and dry?
They don't want the glaciers to retreat but would they accept Davos and Aspen being crushed under a thousand feet of ice? They wouldn't mind the Sahara growing by 100% and starving millions of Africans? [well, that one they probably wouldn't lose any sleep over]
What's their endgame? Apparently it is mankind in his infinite wisdom somehow installing a vast thermostat on the planet. Who gets to set the temp? Grown men in trapdoor jammies or menopausal feminist harpies?
Posted by: Ignatz Ratzkiwatzki | September 05, 2019 at 10:57 AM
We are getting the NW edge of Dorian.
Smells and feels beachy here, 170 miles inland as the seagull flies.
Just clouds and winds.
Rain twenty miles to our southeast, per my radar app.

Ignatz,
I am glad to see people on Twitter bringing up old articles and magazine covers from the 70's and early 80's predicting a coming Ice Age. Perhaps some people will snap out of this climate hysteria.
I distinctly remember sitting at the pool with my neighbor back in the 80's when we were having a very hot day (around 100 for the high) and she was telling me this story she had seen on TV about how the sheep in South America were going blind because there was a hole in the ozone layer. I believe that story was the launch of the global warming stuff.
I still maintain that this entire climate thing is a scam to make bazillions of dollars for democrat connected cronies who didn't get in on the ground floor on oil, gas, or coal and wanted a market to corner, so they invested in solar batteries, electric vehicles, and huge windmills.
A secondary benefit (as was demonstrated last night) is using the scare to control the masses. Once you limit travel and the ability to move around freely, weaken people with vegan diets, and keep them from having children, you pretty much have control over everything except thought, and they are trying to make that a crime as well.

My 10:57 was prompted by my semi weekly trips to the local mountains which are one of the best areas to view the effects of glaciers. I live in the transition zone from the southern Sierra which are largely granitic in nature and the northern Sierra where volcanic peaks predominate.
Last week I stood on a long granite ridge looking down into a 3,000 foot deep canyon with a granite peak on the left and a volcanic one on the right. It makes it very easy to visualize that canyon filled with ice only 12 or 15,000 years ago, scraping the volcanic rock right down to the underlying bare granite, while above the ice line the solidified lava remains. Now imagine that ice covering most of Canada and the northern US and our mountain ranges and a good portion of Northern Europe.
If we have warmed the planet, long live the warmth.

Presumably the argument would be that under a red flag law there is due process as you have a hearing in which you can demonstrate there was no reason to take your guns, a process I don't think exists with the watch and no-fly lists.
Of course red flag laws are one of those theoretical ideas which are not so bad except in the real world where they are merely a toehold on the way to tyranny.

Ignatz,
That is a really good point! In Indiana, the ice sheet extended down to about 50 miles south of Indianapolis. North of the line, the topography is mainly flat, and you have to drill down several hundred feet through glacial till and sand before you hit bedrock.
South of the line the terrain is very hilly, because it is what is left of weathered mountains and foothills that were not glaciated.
If you stand in front of the Teton Glacier, you can actually hear it moving, which is very creepy, but gives you an idea of the strength of the ice.

I can understand why Bastardi is questioning it, but in my opinion the President does this to demonstrate that the Enemy Media will lie about anything they can about him, no matter how small, and since this particular accusation was all over the internet, it's important to debunk it.

Take a gander at advisories 18-24. They all had Dorian in a northwesterly path across Florida at Orlando or points south. Georgia and Alabama are of course NW of Orlando. Unless it was going to stop and do a 180, had it taken that projected course it would obviously have hit Alabama.

And the move by Facebook is probably not just for the sake of its users. A few weeks ago, a San Francisco court rejected an attempt by the social network that alleged Facebook had gathered millions of users’ data unlawfully using facial recognition technology. Significantly, this class action lawsuit was filed by users in Illinois, which, like the EU GDPR requires consent before the collection of biometric data.

Or this apparently non ironic one;

jimmyk,
I wonder if CNN charged the dems for all of that air time. Would that be legal? Would each campaign have contributed? How did they select who got what hour?
This is probably something we should look into before that LGBTQ debate in October.

Mayor Buttigieg has a little problem. The FBI raided the South Bend Housing Authority today. DOH! Petey released a statement saying the mayor's office has nothing to do with the H.A. 2015, he replaced the entire Board of the H.A. That means he appointed ALL the investigatees.
