"... a frivolous society can acquire dramatic significance only through what frivolity it destroys, Its tragic implication lies in its power of debasing people and ideals."
I’m sure this is applicable today, with moar cowbell.
If Paris streets burned over a proposed 25 cents per gallon climate change tax, imagine the global conflagration over a $49 per gallon tax.
That’s what a United Nations special climate report calls for in 12 years, with a carbon tax of $5,500 per ton—equal to $49 per gallon of gasoline or diesel. That’s about 100 times today’s average state and federal motor fuels tax.
By 2100, the U.N. estimates that a carbon tax of $27,000 per ton is needed—$240 per gallon—to limit global warming to no more than 1.5 degrees Celsius
I think I have found a solution.
Climate commies, seemingly numbering in the hundreds of millions, tell us we need to make sacrifices to stop climate change even including reducing the human population by hundreds of millions.
They also tell us there is far too much ammunition in private citizens hands, on the order of, you guessed it hundreds of millions of rounds.
Even a common core kid can do that math can't xi?
--iggy@ 10:29, what is your source for the lasting of diesel for years?--
Putting it in barrels and using it years later.
I was just running a Cat last Monday with diesel that had been in an above ground tank for two years.
My friend who passed away had an old D-7 that had sat around for 5 years or more. Started right up when he sold it.
If it gets water or algae in it it won't last as long but I've never had any go bad.
Can last 10 or more years in underground tanks.
Finally someone in DC understands bills of attainder, which should be fairly easy for the black robed tyrants to understand but they choose to rule otherwise.

I'm really still on the last thread with jim nj and Buckeye trying to conceive of what newly discovered extra pressure at the edge of the solar system might actually mean. I think my imagination has always been hindered by the idea that outer space is a vacuum, only reinforced by looking out at the vast black "emptiness" of the night sky. Of course, while space may be a vacuum, it's not empty at all.
I often wondered what the sky would look like if everything in it had a visible color of some sort. There are X-rays and radio waves, quarks, neutrinos, gravitational forces; the list is very very long. It was really exciting when I first saw the Plank mission views of the COSMIC MICROWAVE BACKGROUND.
And that just represents various wavelengths of leftover electromagnetic radiation. It's a jungle out there!
Indeed, AB. Moore is still around but barely. Noyce was a loss.
It is humbling, though. I have all of my numerical software on my main big computer, and it is out-of-date. Time for a new one, I suppose, but goodness is it a PITA to move to a new one.
The “official” House impeachment inquiry, in its open contempt for even basic due process, makes the Faber trial climactic scene (3:18) seem like “déjà vu all over again.” The White House’s October 8 letter to key House leaders lists the due-process rights denied the president: : (a) to be apprised of laws allegedly violated and all evidence produced, including exculpatory evidence, plus being given full access to evidence that impeaches the credibility of prosecution witnesses; (b) to confront and cross-examine prosecution witnesses; (c) to call defense witnesses and introduce defense evidence; (d) to make objections to witness examinations and admissibility of prosecution evidence introduced; and (e) to obtain assistance of counsel at the hearing. The WH letter sums up: “The Committee’s current procedures provide none of these basic constitutional rights.
It seems to me that this is a list of rights that would come into play in the Senate "trial" not the impeachment inquiry in the House. Doesn't it seem a bit disingenuous to complain of their absence at this stage? Or am I misunderstanding the process?
All the rights Republicans would have in an impeachment process have been denied.
Travesty and a faux impeachment exercise.
Going around the law.
Only weakens it if moved onto the Senate.
Without taking a vote for impeachment? without allowing the Republicans to view or question the witnesses before such a vote, jmh. True, the real trial is in the Senate where they vote to convict on impeachment, but you don't have an impeachment just on Nancy and Schiff's say so. In fact, you don't have one where there's not even a crime alleged.
My main computer is a custom-built six-core Phenom II. 20 GB of RAM, SSD, and 6 TB of rotating storage. It is fine for most things, but it is pretty dated.
So the Dems are recruiting Dean Wormer as their prosecutor for impeachment? Trump gets double secret probation?
I wonder if Greta has post Nobel letdown? But then Beto steps right in to provide the scold of the day. It's hard to keep up with everything they want to take away from us. The tranny outburst at the Dem debate pretty well sums it all up, I guess. There is some very weird internal logic to all of this. I'm just damned if I can figure it out.
I agree completely on the bullshit known as the impeachment inquiry in the House. I'm just not sure what complaining about the putative denial of due process rights that would not yet even be in play in a legitimate inquiry is intended to accomplish, beyond simply confusing the matter.
“It is fine for most things, but it is pretty dated.”
That’s ten-year old tech. If it’s working for you, usually no reason to upgrade. But if you’re out-of-business without it, you can get more for a few grand and should think about it. But I have no idea what you have to run on it and what compatibility or license costs you’d have to take on.
There! Unsolicited advice, worth what you paid. But what do I know... ;)
I'm considering it. There are a lot of software licenses running on my main computer, and transferring them is a PITA if it is possible at all. I don't really wish to transfer two virtual machines to another computer.
For most things it still is fine, but it is terribly slow for numerical modeling. I don't do that often, so waiting a day or two is no problem.
Hey, I posted that NY Sun Neomi Rao piece last night. No respect, I tell you. :)
DrJ, I've found transferring software licenses to new computers pretty easy for the most part. The only trouble I had was with an ancient version of Adobe Acrobat Pro, which I refuse to upgrade to the latest Adobe bloatware. I was on the phone with them for half an hour while they walked me through what I needed to do. It was as if I was trying to put Pong on the computer. But they didn't give me hard time about it.
I think everyone is misunderstanding my question. I agree that the "process" taking place is a farce, a very dangerous farce. My point was that the rights listed in the article are ones that come into play during a Senate trial, not a House impeachment.
The only trouble I had was with an ancient version
To be fair, as a vendor I find it is a crap shoot if my security code from 5 years ago will function on an operating system of today. Thus we always recommend an upgrade. (And we do chase down the bugs and write a work around {we may not have a compatible compiler to do otherwise} to keep people running but it costs us far more than its worth).
To have an old release run on a current operating system can be asking a Tesla to run on a feed bag full of oats... when batteries confuse Elon as it is.
True henry, but I hate Adobe as much as MS because of how every new version is more larded up with crap than the previous one, slow to load, and harder to use. Plus they constantly nag about subscribing, and it's expensive. My old version still works, more or less (the printer drivers crash, but there are open source drivers that work fine).
Wow. First?

JMH,

I'd recommend listening to the sound clip in which he stays relatively calm.

But what do I know... ;)

AB,
I'm considering it.

JMH: Or am I misunderstanding the process?
The Constitution is sparse on Impeachment, but clear:
Constitution Section 2.5: the Power of Impeachment belongs to the House of Representatives. The Speaker is not the House.
Do you think the founders dared put the power to overcome the Executive Branch or the Judiciary in the hands of a single person as Speaker?
Not. A. Chance.

The point of “due process” is that it is the basis of our entire legal system. If they can give it up for Trump, every one of us is at risk.
