Not that we celebrate death around here but I'll cheer for justice:
ISIS leader al-Baghdadi believed to have been killed in a US military raid, sources say
Trump will address the nation at 9AM. I doubt it is to announce tonight's starting pitchers.
DO LET ME ADD: My kids have put up with many years of the following type of dialogue:
Eager Learner: "I hate those guys [at the DMV / at the supermarket / reffing the game/ whatever]. They are the worst!"
Pedantic Yet Seemingly Inexhaustible Dad: "OMG don't hate! We aren't haters! OK, yes, we hate ISIS. And Bin Laden, but he's dead. And Kim Il-whoever is running North Korea into the dirt is hate-worthy. That pretty much covers it. Don't be a hater."
I try to keep the list pretty short but I'm always happy to shorten it. If I were a better Christian I'd take a hate-the-sinner sin-not-the-sinner view, but I have other failings I'll focus on before my ISIS-hating rises to the top of my self-improvement list.
BONUS: Here is a transcript of Obama on Osama. Some will wonder whether Trump will also be self-congratulatory.
“ $150K and $200K per year. That's pretty good for a four-year degree”
Yes it is, but that’s California prices.

The first time I went with my wife to a Lutheran Church I looked in vain for the confession part of their liturgy. When I was told it wasn't there I thought "unpossible". It wasn't the only disconnect.
CH
Come to Columbus and go to our Lutheran church some time.
We have a general confession at the beginning of every service.
In my case, I probably need it every day:)

MR,
Bullshit. I never said I was the final word on the catechism, although I have been exposed to it since my first grade in Cathollic school. All the way to 12th grade. So don't lecture me on my Catholic faith. You constantly think you are the final arbiter of Catholicism. But you are not.
Too many examples of those not Catholic receiving communion from unsuspecting preists. Give it a break. You are not the only Catholic here unlike you belieeve you are. What a disingenuous comment.
BTW,. the priest invited everyone who wanted to receive communion to come up.
Priests are stupid at times. Of course, you have never seen that. I have many times.

Golden State might not make the playoffs even if Thompson effectively comes back. Losing Durant and Iguodala are huge losses and when Draymond loses a step, which may have begun last season, his entire game will drop off a cliff. Curry will still have some fantastic games and Thompson can go on torrid streaks but #44 hasn't run the show since they got Durant, and it's starting to show.

I have to admit I have never seen that at any Catholic Church I have attended.
You are the one who thinks he is the catholic expert here not me.
I have been a practicing Catholic my entire life.
I don’t stop because something the Pope says or does bothers me.
Parish priests or the diocese can surprise me sometimes with their decisions but the people are the church not the representatives.
We can argue all night but I believe we are both strong in our faith and our love for Jesus Christ.

“You are not the final word on the catechism of the Catholic Church.”
Neither are you D.
So long as the person is respectful, and it sounds like JIBs friend was, priests probably care the least about this.
Communion is important to the Catholic receiving it, not the onlookers.

The Lutheran Church has so many synods, is it possible that some don't have a confession?
I am sure that is true.
Our church also has a more "casual" alternative service that is attended by mostly younger families with kids. Probably generally more liberal as well. I don't think confession is part of their service every week.
The service we go to is the most "traditional".
At least it isn't in German like it was when Mrs. Buckeye was a little girl:)

AB and MR,
My point is that the priest has no idea who is Catholic and in grace to receive communion unless he is very visible agnostic like Biden. Anyone can receive commioun if they want. Even Pope John Paul II was duped twice.
MR, I will bet that in your church those not Catholic or not in grace have recived communion without the preist noing it.

Jane,
For me, I have a great business setup that would be hard to duplicate elsewhere. I have networks for lawyers/accountants/bookkeepers that would have to be replaced; I have deep connections to the local research University. I am starting to know the venture capital community.
All that would have to be replaced, and that takes time. I don't have the time.
Now I live in the most conservative county in the state. The county people all have been great to work with -- that would not be the case in Silicon Valley, for example.
We also are close to our adult granddaughter, and that matters.
So for now CA is fine in spite of the expense and state b*llsh*t. If/when I sell the business, we will reevaluate.

Jack, my former pastor was quoted in the Milwaukee Urinal as saying that he would deny the EUCHARIST to anyone in his parish, whom he KNEW, did not attend Mass regularly. For a Priest to refuse to give the Eucharist to someone he knows NOTHING ABOUT, is a dangerous operation. I have seen your knowledge of Catholicism. I too am quite knowledgable on the subject.

On top of it, our real estate costs are very low owing to MrsJ having bought a real fixer 30 years ago. It is not paid for, but we pay less than what rent would be on a very low-end studio. And we have four buildings on the property.

We have a pretty unique property. Two of the four outbuildings I use for my company and its lab. It is hard to find a comparable property elsewhere. I'm sure they exist, but they are hard to find.
We are in a comparatively low-cost part of the state. Elsewhere? Depends on the location, I suppose. Austin TX would probably cost more; FL would be less.
Every part of the country has its disasters. The Bay Area has earthquakes (we don't get them here). Others have hurricanes like you do or tornadoes. Much of the Midwest in addition gets terrible lake-effect snowfalls. AZ gets flash floods and dust storms in addition to terribly hot weather. We have fire, and you have warning about that.
No place is perfect.

We're not quite done with the theological stuff clarice, because I've actually had a go round with my pastor a time or two on this.
This is what the bible says about communion; Christ makes his pronouncement about it being His body and blood and to take it in remembrance of Him. Paul notes in 1 Corinthians that certain members had been taking it in an unworthy manner; drinking up all the wine and eating all the bread like a bunch of stupid gluttons with no spiritual intent or understanding to the purpose of the act. He therefore admonished believers to examine themselves to make sure they were not likewise ignoring the spiritual purpose of communion.
That's it.
There is no talk of anyone being unworthy by virtue of their sin, confessed or unconfessed, or anyone being unqualified because they go to the wrong church. If you're a believer you take communion, Period. Everything else is the addition of human doctrine.
Christ died on the cross, once, for all and His work was then "finished". His grace covers my sins; past, present and future. I do not fall from grace anew each time I sin. Nor is my salvation restored when I repent, because it was never lost. I am made righteous at the moment of my salvation and remain so, because it is the righteousness of Christ covering me, not my own good deeds which are of no value in this respect.
More importantly it is when I am at my weakest and most in need that I more than ever need that connection to Christ which is why Hebrews 4 says;
"For we do not have a High Priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but was in all points tempted as we are, yet without sin. 16Let us therefore come boldly to the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need."
I'm familiar with Catholic doctrine regarding who may take it and I disagree with it, of course, since I'm not Catholic.
I tend to agree with the Catholic doctrine of transubstantiation, or at least the mystery of it, because He didn't say these are symbols of my body and blood, as most Protestants hold. He said they are my body and blood.
I also disagree with most Protestant doctrine on the subject since it has misinterpreted Paul's caveat in 1 Corinthians on examining oneself beforehand. It is widely viewed as having to first make oneself righteous or worthy enough to receive communion. Neither Christ directly, nor Paul indirectly says or implies that and it is in any event contrary to the universal doctrine of righteousness in Christendom.
That's my two cents.
If you disagree take it up with our High Priest, whom you can boldly approach. :)

Is the propane generator hanging in there?--
Yes and no, Buckeye. Had an episode this afternoon. Finally figured out the choke is screwy which was messing with the governor every time a load came on line. The solution was super high tech. I put a vise grip on the air cleaner to keep the choke from moving too far. Problem solved.
A half hour later the power came back on.
But they're saying it's definitely going off again tomorrow. I was actually surprised they restored it at all since the Red Flag starts at 8AM tomorrow morning.

A senior White House official plans to tell House impeachment investigators on Tuesday that he believed President Donald Trump undermined U.S. national security when he urged Ukraine’s president to investigate his political rivals, according to a copy of his opening statement obtained by POLITICO.
=====
So what? Who cares what he BELIEVED? So, he had a different opinion. A bunch of those people in the Senate and House signed that objection to the Syrian withdrawal.
Then we got Al-Baghdaddi.
Opinion differences aren't illegal.
The guy's name is Lt. Col. Alexander Vindman, and I bet no one has heard of him until Schiff needed someone to be a witness.
Pfft.

Christ, that half hour survey of the bible made me think, man rebelled against god, not merely cause of the serpent because hr wanted to, man killed his brother, stained the earth with other sins that required the flood, for a time obeyed the covenant, but ultimately strayed, even when the rules were made crystal clear on mt sinai, withim a few generations they strayed again.

Im referring to the time of judges, in the last instance, this would lead to the subjugation of the kingdoms of the north and south by assyria and babylon.

--"This is not intended to be a rude question: but why don’t you people in CA move?"--
Some of my family came out before the Gold Rush even started. My mom's mom could remember coming out later as a little girl in a covered wagon from Kansas.
Why should I leave this state because a bunch of East coast pencil necks moved out here to create third world shitholes in their blue hea-VONNS? I should leave because a couple of pinko googles and a thieving little Data with a bad haircut moved into Palo Alto or because a third rate Don Draper is now our gubnuh?
FTS, as CH would say.
The vast majority of the geographic area of CA is as red as Idaho.
And since I am of the opinion that there is no political solution to our current national crisis I'm perfectly willing to wait until the creeps who wrecked this state can be driven out of it or buried under it; their choice.

Not to mention Vindman was born in Ukraine.
He was basically a translator.

Lots of great pictures, not only of Melania but the President and the kids, including a fairy princess and an elaborate Tyrannosaurus rex!

It just strikes me history in that region did not begin 2018, closer to 2014.
