Not that we celebrate death around here but I'll cheer for justice:
ISIS leader al-Baghdadi believed to have been killed in a US military raid, sources say
Trump will address the nation at 9AM. I doubt it is to announce tonight's starting pitchers.
DO LET ME ADD: My kids have put up with many years of the following type of dialogue:
Eager Learner: "I hate those guys [at the DMV / at the supermarket / reffing the game/ whatever]. They are the worst!"
Pedantic Yet Seemingly Inexhaustible Dad: "OMG don't hate! We aren't haters! OK, yes, we hate ISIS. And Bin Laden, but he's dead. And Kim Il-whoever is running North Korea into the dirt is hate-worthy. That pretty much covers it. Don't be a hater."
I try to keep the list pretty short but I'm always happy to shorten it. If I were a better Christian I'd take a hate-the-sinner sin-not-the-sinner view, but I have other failings I'll focus on before my ISIS-hating rises to the top of my self-improvement list.
BONUS: Here is a transcript of Obama on Osama. Some will wonder whether Trump will also be self-congratulatory.
That twitter feed by that Shellenberger MD guy re Newsome and PG&E has a few valid points and a bunch of stupid blather.

It has been clear all along that among Trump’s more useful side effects was inducing hyper partisan libs who pose as “journalists” to expose themselves-
But we can add to that exposing former “conservative” never trumpers who are really just emotionally unstable narcissists.

Ignatz:
"He didn't say these are symbols of my body and blood, as most Protestants hold. He said they are my body and blood."
I wouldn't presume to challenge you on a theological basis, but in terms of language, one could certainly argue that you are simply extrapolating more than necessarily follows from what may simply be the difference between a simile and a metaphor.
Simile: I am like a kettle, boiling over.
Metaphor: I am a kettle, boiling over.
Jesus used metaphors prolifically, with what often seemed like no expectation that he would be taken literally. Ditto for both Old and New Testament writers, generally. Biblical narratives are mined for symbolism on a continuous basis in churches everywhere.
In any case, that's how it strikes me, but I'm not relying on any particular theological exegesis, let alone expertise.

Exactly its like with this series ive spoken about earlier, apocalypais, it is fairly faithful to scripture, except on possibly two points, the man of sin, is more likely to be a religious rather than a political figure and the rebuilt temple is also likely to metaphodical as well.

Quite possibly, since I haven't cut off my hand or plucked out my eye.
But the context does seem to convey something more.
In the eternal end, it's not that important:
In the essentials, unity.
In the non-essentials, liberty.
In all things, charity.

Ignatz:
"By the time they've all moved there will be no place to get away from them."
That's already proving problematic, if Bozeman is typical. They move away from California and then lobby for all the same kind of laws and policies that drove them away in the first place. It seems to be a matter of wanting to control everything in their viewsheds -- both literally and figuratively.
Posted by: JM Hanes | October 28, 2019 at 10:52 PM
Jane,
The funny thing about strict laws is that the stricter they are, the more they are ignored.
I bought my last house in the Santa Rosa, CA area. The building codes frankly are ridiculous. So most country properties were "nonconforming" -- that is, people made changes or added parts to the house or buildings on the property without permits.
Most were done well. The house I ended up buying had a nonconforming room added to the garage. It was fine.
The important thing is if the crazy laws are enforced. Here in Placer county the crazy ones are not.
Nothing can be done about the taxes, but the rest of the dreck usually can be ignored.

Baghdad and the rest of Iraq have been at a high boil for about 10 days now. I've posted a little on that, but with Iraq, Lebanon and even parts of Egypt protesting it's easy to confuse them.
In Iraq they are protesting corruption, high unemployment, a non-functional government riven with sectarianism and some are fed up with Iranian influence.

I think it's in their best interests to back Trump and the feds against California.
The other automakers that cut a deal with California acted as a cartel in my opinion.
"After the four automakers — including BMW AG— announced the voluntary California agreement, the Justice Department sent letters to them warning the agreement “may violate federal antitrust laws,” according to documents seen by Reuters."
I think the feds should play a little hardball on this. If California and Democrats want to make this an issue we should go scorched earth on them.
I think there should be one nation-wide set of rules for all domestic automakers rather than some companies that think they might have an edge over the others to cut sweetheart deals.
I also think they should find something other than CAFE as a measurement. It tends to subsidize foreign manufacturers that have larger markets of gas-sipper buyers in their home markets.

This is such a rich thread, so even though I'm far behind out her on the left coast I'll put my 2 cents in on a couple of things.
As a Catholic taught by the nuns eons ago, I tend to take things fairly literally. Although I realize that the New Testament comes down to us through translation over the ages, I note that when Jesus said something that was difficult for his apostles to accept, he never backed down. When some disciples walked away, he turned to his apostles and asked, "Are you going to leave, too?" That's pretty much the benchmark for me. As a believer in his life, death and resurrection , it's not a great leap for me to accept him at his word. As a result the part of the Mass that includes the consecration of the host and communion is particularly important and special to me.
As far as staying or leaving California, that's a difficult question. One of my sisters plans to leave for the very issues raised here. However, I feel very much like Dr. J and Iggy do on the matter. When fires raged through California during Governor Gray Davis' term, Californians rose up and threw him out. It was really an exciting election. Unfortunately, we got the Governator who was owned and operated by the Kennedy family. I have hopes that Californians will throw this government out, too. The sooner the better, but I'm not taking any bets.

I've been trying to understand the reversal in the Covington kids lawsuit.
The judge knocked out 30 allegations, but re-instituted 3.
All are statements of the Indian, Mr. Phillips, that the WaPo published.
They were false and defamatory. The WaPo went with them. Did they have a responsibility to verify them before reporting them?
I'm having some trouble with this. Spoken word is slander, right? Printed word is libel, right?
If you don't verify the facts behind the slander is the libel your own?

Is the issue that the WaPo, and others, should have known of the Indian's background and prior false statements? I think yes, as those facts came out later.
The discovery phase could be interesting. When did the WaPo know that it's original reporting was wrong? I can't remember what they did, but a retraction and apology would be better than a, "We stand by our sources."

“retraction and apology”
The retraction is one of the biggest cons in “journalism”. It isn’t possible to unring the bell. It doesn’t cost the “journalist” nor his employer anything, and it never makes the victim of the false reporting whole. There needs to be a real cost to getting it wrong.
The WaPo “reporting” (spit) about Sandmann and Nathan Phillips (note you hardly ever hear that liar’s name) was criminally wrong. For every legal protection “journalism” gets, there ought to be a more stringent legal standard applied. Instead, the opposite happens - the legal protection produces more lies. Bertelsman only brought back three of 33 false statements WaPo made.

"The important thing is if the crazy laws are enforced. Here in Placer county the crazy ones are not."
The problem with that stuff is you can get targeted. The dems are very good with that. Of course that stuff happens everywhere of you are on the 'wrong' side.
