From Politico:
Top NSC Russia official to step down ahead of impeachment testimony
As with Bolton, Washington wonders: Did he jump, or was he pushed?
Tomorrow's excitement MAY include a House vote affirming the existence of an ongoing something-or-other. An impeachment inquiry, maybe, but why insist on labeling this thing we have?
Spying on a candidate and his campaign, by the ADMINISTRATION in POWER actually happened. OBAMA'S people broke many many laws, and attempted to FRAME Trump for things he never did nor said. Rodham paid $10 millllllllllllllllion dollars for a fraudulent document, that OBAMA'S ADMINISTRATION used to FRAME TRUMP. We had a 2 year investigation to determine if TRUMP, not RODHAM was a criminal.
The State Dept, the AG, The FBI, the CIA, and various FULL COMMIE DEMOCRAT Senators and Congressmen, have committed treason, right out in the open. The MEDIA doesn't notice it.
WHAT OPTIONS ARE LEFT????

Trump without the Trumpiness would never have gotten out of the GOP primaries in 2016, and certainly not past Hillary (dreadful as her campaign was)

That this evil bastard sounds the closest to a voice of reason in that benighted shithole should tell us all we ever need to know about "nation building".
Nations are the result of cultures. Do we honestly think we can dictate the culture of another country? These imbeciles, neocons especially, are far more patronizing and useless than the worst British or Belgian imperialist who at least had the sense to look at the world as it is and give the natives respect enough to know any real change would have to be organic not imposed.

A national divorce seems to me a rewarding of the subversive, cold civil war the left has been waging against America and us for decades.
It seems especially odd coming from members of the party of Lincoln.
Rather than rewarding them with vast parts of this great nation from which they will continue to constantly harrass and attempt to subvert the rest of us, how about they be put in their place and punished rather than rewarded for being traitorous scum who would gladly disarm, suppress, enslave and/or imprison us if they could.

CH,
This is an old (2010) article by Randy Barnett where he discusses the pro's and con's of an Article V "convention". He makes some excellent points, one is that its been the Left calling for it more than the right. Anyway, I think you will find it interesting.

Just remember that Roberts would preside in any Senate Post-Impeachment Trial. Since any Impeachment based on "ham sandwich" fantasy will be a Political trial, he would probably not look forward to his duty in a trial.

Now that's irony, coming from the one who's so sure the Constitution needs to be fixed.
In JiB's link to the Philip Klein excerpt posted by Randy Barnett, I noted this (among other things I didn't know):
It strikes me that you might have better luck, or at least be clearer about what you're proposing, if you actually spelled out what you expect to accomplish, i.e. a convention to consider x,y,z amendments. When you propose an Article V convention without an explicit mission, you might as well be prescribing a magic pill. I'm not sure why it's surprises you that almost no one wants to sign onto an open ended conclave of politicians. I'm also not at all sure why you seem to think that people we trust would end up controlling the process or the outcome.

"What was the original reason behind the constitutional convention?"
I'm not sure whether this question was related to my suggestion about specifying the purpose of an Article V convention or not, but one of the other points made in the Klein article was that an Article V convention is not, in fact, a constitutional convention. It's a convention to consider amendments. Essentially, it's not even a thing, per se, until its purpose has been spelled out.

Can someone copy/paste the tweet from Tom Maguire that generated a lot of criticism last night? I checked out his Twitter feed today and wasn't sure what he said that upset several people.
I do agree with many of Gus' observations about our host. I started lurking on this site back during the Plamegate days because IMO TM and posters like clarice were provided more insight about what was going on than others. Fast forward to today and it really boggles my mind how anyone who considers themselve a conservative would oppose Trump and aid and abet the Communist/Progressive enemy, the DC Uniparty Establishment, and the Deep State.
The GOP is referred to as a "big tent" coalition of conservative citizens. What conservative values, if any, does TM share with Trump supporters? There is nothing wrong with being a moderate who wants American society to be peaceful, stable, with everyone with different values coexisting. That's a nice Utopian outlook to have but when we are in Culture War II against the Communists/Progressives that kind of attitude just leads to defeat.
Sounds like to me that Tom Maguire may be a conscientious objector in the ongoing Culture War. He knows the threat facing the country he just doesn't believe in fighting for the same values that patriotic MAGA supporters believe are worth fighting for. If my perception of TM is wrong I welcome him explaining why.

"TM hasn't totally lost his mind"
Yes, TM is not stupid.
And TM is not evil.
So, it's a puzzle.
I think most of us fall into the camp: "Trump supporters pretty much all have stayed strong", "Many new supporters have come to appreciate Trump", and "Dems are acting batsh*t crazy".
Thus: easy victory in 2020.
I still consider this the most likely reality.
Still, TM and my RINO chess buddy are a puzzle.
They are still mostly buying what the media has to sell despite all evidence to the contrary.
I don't point to them as individuals but as examples of a group of people. If these people are not yet persuaded to support Trump against Dem totalitarianism, then what will it take? And is 2020 so assuredly in the bag?

Posted by: Tom R | November 01, 2019 at 01:00 PM
My hopes? We were a divided nation in 2015 and Trump has exploited/aggravated that. I favor a process that reverses that trend.
Eg, Dems winning the damn election (which Warren won't do, IMHO).
Or Reps keeping the message with a calmer messenger.
Question for TM. Do the Allies win WW2 if George Patton is not the commander of the US 3rd Army? What if instead of George Patton and the unique personal qualities he is famous for the commander was a piece of shit general like Wesley Clark who was despised by almost everyone who served with him?
When you are fighting a war, what matters is winning the war. You want the general in charge to possess the personal qualities needed to win the war. That is all the matters. Who gives a shit if they are not a "calmer messenger"?
Posted by: Tom R | November 01, 2019 at 01:11 PM
thanks for the link, Buckeye (actually TomR wanted it).
Reading the whole exchange, Tom is talking to a "CNN ingenue" (not a CNN employee but someone who has wide-eyed bought the entire CNN/MSNBC world view). That person is asking why retiring anti-Trump Repub legislators don't stand up, denounce Trump and vote for impeachment, etc. That person says the Repub Party will go into the ashcan if it follows Trump because Trump is, literally, a toxin.
Tom is explaining why the situation is not so simple. And answering the person in language they can understand.
One point TM makes is intriguing. After Nixon, the Repubs had a hard time. YET, Ford almost won the election and the Repubs roared back with Reagan. Even a naive Trump-hater spoon fed on a diet of WaPo/NYT/CNN/MsNBC and so on, deserves to get a dose of real history from time to time.

"If you’re trying to solve the problem that we want to get everybody covered and we want to level the playing field between the hospitals that take care of the poor people and hospitals that take care of the rich people, Medicare for All is something we better take a look at,” said Eric Dickson, president and CEO of UMass Memorial Health Care.
This is typical class envy nonsense.
The rich have always had better care than not only the poor, but most everyone who isn't part of the .001%

A key exchange between TM and the person occurs when it is stated that retiring anti-Trump legislators should be noble, rip off the band-aid and full throatedly call for a Trump impeachment along with all the other cool kids in the Dem Party.
TM responds that these guys, though retiring from DC politics, will return to home towns where ALL their neighbors, relative, friends, et al consider it obvious that Trump is the target of a Deep State coup. "You and I may not believe that ..." says TM.
And there you are. If you don't believe in the Deep State, you see the world differently.
So there's a couple of realities colliding:
1) Deep State is real, the coup is real, but for some reason the charges are not being brought. Either because it would tear the nation apart, or they can't get convictions in DC or the coup plotters are thwarting actions (and successfully hiding evidence), or 4D chess reasons, etc
2) Deep State is over exaggerated, there's no coup, the Repub base is nuts, the coup talk is just a fund raising tactic and indictments are not being brought because there's no evidence.
I still remain puzzled that TM is not more persuaded by the evidence. I see him trying to communicate to the other person in a shared language (not totally from conviction), but I'm sure he shares the other person's outlook to a greater extent than is justified.
It's interesting and, I think, useful to read the whole conversation.

When you are fighting a war, what matters is winning the war. You want the general in charge to possess the personal qualities needed to win the war. That is all the matters. Who gives a shit if they are not a "calmer messenger"?
Exactly. I just don't get why people don't see this.
But then, even people whose political thought processes are normally fairly aligned with mine seem to often focus on persona and [stated] political positions rather than executive ability and demonstrated results. Who cares what positions you have if you abandon them at will or can't execute?
Maybe they don't understand the war analogy because they don't see that we're in a war.

Porch, back then, Andover and Salem bordered each other. Who knew?
I read that 17th century Andover was located where North Andover is now (the town later expanded southwards). Having grown up in New England I know how it works, so I can see how the townships could have bordered each other, yet the village centers were still quite distant. Looking at the map, the Salem meeting house and the Andover meeting house still seem to be about miles apart, as you mentioned. But that does explain a lot.

We were a divided nation in 2015 and Trump has exploited/aggravated that.
I reject that, it's nonsense. Obama divided the nation, yes, but Trump hasn't made it any worse - it's actually a little better now, imo. I'll just toss out a theory right now that I absolutely guarantee can't be proven better or worse than the next guy's theory - when unemployment rates level out with one another, as they have now, then the populace is more "equal", less resentful and therefore better disposed to one another. To channel Reagan, all the boats have risen, it's all good, and the kind of growth rates Trump promised and has delivered improve our lives and bring people together.
Any time people think about the calm, mannered "messenger" that was Obama, they should also remember that it was he, not Donald Trump, who headed the state when it mounted a treasonous coup against Obama's successor. Trump hasn't exploited or aggravated any of that criminality, it stands alone all by itself - and it would have likely remained unknown forever if not for Trump.

Jane: "Why don't you guys talk to him on Twitter?"
Good suggestion. Personally, I deleted my Twitter acct a few years back when it became clear that Twitter was against freedom.
And there are only so many hours in the day. Haranguing strangers on the Internet doesn't get much of a time budget from me.
I don't feel very queasy about discussing TM. It's here if he wants to read it. I try to be thoughtful and respectful. And any of us who find his statements distressing can decamp to another blog.
It's kind of fun thinking of the JOM community as a group of poor relations huddled in the outbuilding of the lush Maguire Estate. Gossiping from time to time about the occupant of The Manse.
