I hate to disagree with matt and almost never do but this;
is largely myth.
First they were often "saved" by muslims from the depradations of muslims.
Second the entire islamic "golden age" was not only built on mostly Greek and Jewish predicates but many of the greatest scholars of this "islamic" golden age were in fact Christians and Jews either in dhimmitude or under forced conversions.
Third, to the extent the Dark ages were dark, which itself is a bit of a myth, classic scholarship continued and was preserved in monasteries and other centers of learning in Europe and Asia Minor.
There of course have been great minds and even great ideas outside the West and the Judeo-Christian faith.
I specifically said that while there have been contributions from outside sources they weren't significant in the development of the magnificent edifice of Western Civilization. I still stand by that. It's particularly true at the core of the greatest achievement of WC; its moral, ethical and spiritual framework, which gave birth to the individual, religious, economic and political liberties enshrined in our founding.

Some posters here just won’t tolerate even the slightest criticism of the President.
I’d tolerate the comments from Mitt and Jeb a lot more easily if they ever opened their traps to speak against someone other than the President.
Jeb was quiet for 8 years while Obama was systematically dismantling everything his brother managed to accomplish as President (and mocking and denigrating him as he did it).
Mitt was quiet while Harry Reid lied about his taxes, the media mocked his wife’s Multiple Sclerosis, and the Dems called him a homophonic racist Nazi dog murderer.
But somehow they’ve managed to find their voices to criticize a GOP president who’s actually accomplishing pretty much everything they claimed to want to do if they’d been elected President.
So I can’t help but conclude that either their promises in 2012 and 2016 were complete crap and they were never Republicans or conservative in any way at all, or...
No, that’s pretty much the only explanation.

nice touch on those significant points re Western Civ.
when i saw that banner with Anzaldua, Angelou et al hanging above the principal's of foundational thinkers in Western trads i was reminded of the culture wars at the University of Vermont 1984-2000 (roughly) when students were pounding the table to have the OG's thrown out and Anzaldua, Hooks et al swept into the canon.
it was thin gruel and didnt challenge students by helping them develop their unformed brain matter with bloodsweaty THINKING. Anzaldua writes whiny gotcha narratives targeting anything with a sausage. "phallocentric".... was the intellectual targeting objective....tear down any male thinker unless his phallus was targeting a same sex hole.
it remains disgusting that these "thinkers" of late are the centerpiece "thought leaders" in the student "debt crisis."

While 41 Republicans backed Trump’s emergency order, the 12 who broke with him said they worried about executive overreach and that it could set a precedent for future presidents — who may be Democrats — to use such a power to achieve things Congress won’t approve.
Interesting how little time they spent worrying about executive overreach when Zero was in office.

Mitt is the modern version of a carpetbagger. Father was governor of Michigan, but born in Mexico. Mitt was governor of Massachusetts and is now a Senator of Utah, only because he is a high ranking Morman bishop. When he took over the bribery infested stalled development of the 2002 Olympics he called in the "old firm" to rescue the schedule, which we did, just like we did for the LA Olympics and Barcelona. I was TDY to SLC for 2 months working on the organizational development. IOW cherry picking the best and brightest in our company.
The one meeting I attended with Romney present did not leave me with wonder as to his management style and executive skill. He could hardly follow our plan which required everyone on the take or wanting to be on the take to just get the fuck out of the way. No interference. Just let our team do what they do.
Romney seemed overwhelmed at our focus and what we required from him and his owner organization. We made up 4 months of delay to finish on time by fast tracking and keeping him out of the process.
He is not as smart as people believe he is.

I and others criticized Sasse and there has been no shortage of criticism of him over time.
This seems to be the basis of the problem; MR you are misinterpreting these things as personal or personality driven either pro Trump or anti Romney et al.
That is almost universally incorrect.
Trump is, by hook or by crook and by whatever means necessary advancing an agenda most of us support enthusiastically.
For that he is praised.
To the extent Mittens, Sasse, Rubio or anyone else putatively or marginally on the side of that agenda undercuts Trump and therefore the important work he is doing they get hammered.
They have not raised a single point worth considering and they have assisted Trump's and therefore OUR enemies by undercutting him. This is a war and in war you do not publicly undercut your side. That is why they are attacked because they are endangering the war effort. Period.
Not because anyone carves their and Trump's initials into their school desk and not because of some personal animus toward Mitt. It's because Mitt actually makes a fairly useless buck private in the war effort, but he still seems to think he ought to be some big mouth four star directing the troops.
He oughta be on KP.

The Infamous Ignatz, I agree with you that we would still have the classics and excellent commentaries thereon if the medieval Islamic philosophical works and scholars had never existed. In addition, many Islamic philosophers were working with translations of the Greek classics undertaken by Christians (often in the region where Syria now sits). I would argue, however, especially in political philosophy, Islamic scholars' works have stood the test of time. Maimonides, for instance, acknowledges his debt to Abu Nasr al-Farabi.

Islam has produced nothing important the west hasn't and whatever it has produced comes with a generous portion of the most egregiously destructive, malignant and counterfeit mix of religion, politics, morality, culture, ethics and economics the world has ever seen with the possible exception of communism.
If people want to read Persian poets or put one of their rugs on their floor or eat Turkish Delight or falafal, fine.
But let's not pretend it in any significant way shaped or should shape Western Civ.
Almost everything good about Persian, Arab and other islamacized cultures predates or exists despite islam anyway. But it's difficult to import the one without the other, thanks to the totalitarian nature of islam so, no thanks.

Mary Rose,
The Iowa offense self-destructed through penalties and turnovers. The Michigan defense applied a lot of pressure, which forced it I suppose. They did have a few great plays, but in the end the combination of MI defense and Iowa mistakes killed them.
Michigan got all of their points in the first quarter, and was pretty silent thereafter. Iowa's defense was very good too.

I'm a Nebraska cornhusker fan - thanks to my dad who was an avid fan. But he also had a bad temper at times when it cames to Nebraska football so we always prayed Nebraska would win. I still do that to this day in his memory.

Gators punt, it hits the Tiger, and Gators cover it on the 2 yard line. But unsportsmanlike 15 yard penalty on Florida. Pulling a Tiger off the fumble pile.

Maryrose, Biden is TOAST. I have said so since the CORN POP deal. Biden has forever been a boasting bloviating clown, whom only the DEMOCRAT heirarchy could ever try to sell as a person of character, substance or a man of any accomplishment.
HE IS SWAMP. Got in, got power, got campaign cash and Demotard Party protection for 4O fockin' years.
Biden once came to Milwaukee and went to a Hamburger and Frozen Custard ICON restaurant called KOPPS. The manager of KOPPS told Biden, that his CONE was on the HOUSE, so long as Biden didn't raise TAXES. Biden got in the guys face and called him as ass-hole or something similar.
The "man", is really TOUGH, when he has the POWER. Otherwise, he's a pile of SCAT.

Ig, I agree with you that Islam as a religion, from its roots, has never shown anything to offer our civilization.
There have been people who considered themselves Islamic, who do. The aforementioned Ibn Khaldhun is one. His work as a historiographer and historian offered threads of wisdom we could follow.
But, then, Islamic rulers/theologians didn’t absorb his wisdom either.

GUS,
Spurs was my grandfather's team. I am a Chelsea fan.
Posted by: Jim Eagle | October 05, 2019 at 04:36 PM
I like Spurs, but they have some serious problems this year. Chelsea is always one step or one year away from being TOP of the EPL.
When my Brother was at Lakenheath, he'd head down to see Arsenal. I am not a specific fan of an EPL squad, but I have favored Tottenham/Harry Kane, Man City and de Bruyne, and also LIVERPOOL for a whole lot of reasons, including Klopp.

I prefer the goal compilations. I don’t worry about who scored on whom.

A side comment from someone sitting in the cheap nosebleed seats when it comes to arguing history and religion. From my distant view, the Jews figured things out very early when they picked the smartest guy as their Rabbi and he had lots of kids, while the Muzzies with their 70 IQ married their 1st cousins. How's that workin' out for ya? How much stronger would the otherwise great gifts saved/created by the medieval monks have been if they had kids?
So, high IQ by itself might get you Chicoms, but overlay a Judeo-Christian framework and you get the best we can conjure at this point.

Henry, I've learned to agree with that take on who gets the GOAL.
Except for when ...."I" was playing!!!
Wink.
