As a converted Wisconsinite, I've been told by people many times, that I could be a spokesperson for WISCONSIN. I love Wisconsin, and the history of Milwaukee and more.
One last brag on Spahn. At 21, Warren Spahn, joined the ARMY and served 4 years from '42-46.
He is STILL the ALL TIME WINNING LEFT HANDER IN HISTORY. His years in the ARMY were from 22-25. The PRIME of a young ATHLETES life. Yet he still is the all time LEFTY to this day.

Another Bob

Jack is Back!

Well, when you look at the career stats there is no one close to approaching what Mad Max has done. 2 No-No's in one season cooks it for me. Plus the guy is 37.

Spahn, Matthews, Aaron and Schoendienst.
All 4 were disparate in age and experience. A very very well balanced team.
The 66 Orioles of my childhood and their wonder years, were also filled with studs. Andy Etchebarren died recently. Boog Powell, Brooks Robinson, Frank Robinson, Palmer, McNally, Davey Johnson, and several others of long time note....Mark Belanger, Buford, even Paul Blair played on that short ride.

Narciso

Well players in that generation, had to get by on skill, not chemical enhancement ahem.

I think the same applies to foogball and basketball,

Jack, if you are referring to SCHERZER, he is FANTASTIC. He came close to a perfect game v the Brewers, when he was at DETROIT. I was driving home from the CABIN....at the Wisconsin side of IRON RIVER. He had the BREWERS "completed" into the 8th. I was pissed. The Brewers got a hit or 2 or sumpting...but the very next weekend, he got a NO-NO. He's something. There have been a few guys like him. NOT ALWAYS ON, but extremely good.
So.....have you heard of NOLAN RYAN????

GUS

Oh, and JACK, you are a sports encyclopedia of sorts. SANDY KOUFAX didn't play long enough, but he was FANTASTIC, sort of like Gale Sayers.
I had the pleasure of getting to know DON DRYSDALE'S bride Ann Myers Drysdale. Great...grrrrrrrrrrreat warm and very classy lady.
The family has deep MARQUETTE U....ties.
Bob Gibson.
Baseball is awesome. The history, the pageantry, the AMERICANA.

Captain Hate

I've told jimmyk before that Scherzer is very deferred payback for Denny McClain.

Bob Gibson used to have all the major basketball records for Creighton.

GUS

I saw McClain pitch in 68 in D.C. vs THE SPLENDID SPLINTERS Senators. I was nearly 7.

GUS

Capn, my boys best friend is a freshman at CREIGHTON, one of my new, no longer interns, is a CREIGHTON PREP, and MARQUETTE U. grad.
The 68 WORLD SERIES was awesome. I am NO ST LOUIS FAN, and I LLLLLLLLLLLLLLOVE Henry. And I am no DETROIT FAN, though, I've been to games there, and OLD TIGER STADIUM is the BEST STADIUM, that I ever saw an MLB game at. I have a Cardinals cap, I have a Tigers cap (I love the TIGERS UNIES.). I have a couple NATS caps, the red one, is identical to my H.S. cap.

GOODNESS. I love baseball.

GUS

I just picked up a copy of USA TODAY a few minutes ago. It said.........DEWEY DEFEATS TRUMP!!!

Captain Hate

The Splendid Splinter turned Ed Brinkman's balsa bat into a weapon with some pop and developed Aurelio Rodriguez nicely until Bob Short giftwrapped the left side of the infield for the Tigers. I think Teddy Ballgame just wanted to go fishing after that.

Damn it's late. Nytol!

Narciso

Captain Hate

and OLD TIGER STADIUM is the BEST STADIUM, that I ever saw an MLB game at.

I loved how the extended front of the upper deck would turn balls outfielders thought they could catch into home runs.

Now really Nytol!

GUS

Capn, Aurelio Rodrigeuz was a CLASSIC third baseman, with a third baseman body.
I believe he died getting hit by a car.
Why he meant anything to me, is only explained by how much I loved the AMERICAN LEAGUE EAST, and NO DOUBT, because in those days, my brother Rick and I owned every baseball card known to man.

https://wattsupwiththat.com/2019/10/22/explaining-natural-gas-flaring-to-the-new-york-times-explanatory-reporters/

You have to read the whole thing to understand why oil drillers "waste" natural gas by flaring it.

It's just economics. No simple, profitable way to get it to market given existing pipeline systems.

By flaring the gas you are able to produce more energy dense petroleum. It's a trade-off.

One company is looking at this as a business opportunity.

"Houston oilfield service company Baker Hughes is using the Permian Basin in West Texas to debut a fleet of new turbines that use excess natural gas from a drilling site to power hydraulic fracturing equipment — reducing flaring, carbon dioxide emissions, people and equipment in remote locations."

They are planning on using the flare gas to run electrical generators that can produce power to be used on-site.

Pipelines are very expensive. I wonder if they could link gas-flaring turbines into an electrical grid at a lesser cost?

https://www.wsj.com/articles/all-about-the-money-why-hong-kong-matters-so-much-to-china-11571736607

Behind the firewall, but here's a quote from Insty:

" Since 1997, mainland Chinese companies have raised $335 billion by floating in Hong Kong, tapping a broader range of shareholders than they could onshore.

Over the years, the pool of capital available at home has gotten much larger. But since the Hong Kong dollar is pegged to its U.S. equivalent, and the city has no capital controls, a listing there can generate hard currency for foreign takeovers and investments. It would be harder to use a Shanghai stock sale for the same goal.

For technology firms and others, New York has been another favored listing destination, but worsening U.S.-China relations could make this more problematic. Hong Kong offers a convenient way to tap many investors who are familiar with China.

For global investors, Shanghai and Shenzhen have become more accessible. But investors typically prefer Hong Kong’s legal protections, and they have other concerns about mainland markets, including the difficulties of moving money out."

If you keep in mind that Hong Kong is an important financial hub for mainland China it may make it easier to understand the US threats to curtail Chinese stock listings on US markets and the possibility of curtailing ETFs that trade in America, but are listed elsewhere.

I'm now thinking it was a shot across the bow of China.

It's kind of subtle or we would have picked up on this earlier. I mean it scared many American financial professionals when the talk of this started. They assumed it was another trade war move.

I think it was a message to China that as long as Hong Kong is semi-autonomous, it's financial markets are legitimate.

All these other things we talked about, without mentioning Hong Kong, are possible, not necessarily probable, but...

Comments welcome.

As if the Democratic candidates aren't doing enough to torpedo their efforts, Hillary feels a need to speak out and ruin them further.

Hillary isn't in the race. The race isn't about her, but she needs it to be about her. So she keeps interjecting herself into the race.

The logic is really odd. None of you are me. I should have beat Trump except... So none of you can win either because you don't rise to my level Which was more than enough to win, except...

Melinda, I can't argue with that as I agree, and I do think the SEC should issue some new rules on this, but doesn't the timing of this suggest that Hong Kong was the immediate issue?

I guess what I'm asking is this. This is not a new issue for the SEC. They have been thinking about these possible actions for a while.

Why go public on this very recently? Trade war tactic. Investor protection. Or a warning about Hong Kong's independence?

jim nj

via Insty, I hesitated to post this as it seems rather far-fetched.

https://westernwire.net/no-more-cooking-with-gas-environmental-activists-going-after-the-appliances-consumers-love/

Natural gas used locally for cooking is more efficient than using electricity because of transmission power line loss.

Then I thought of NY and its bans on new gas pipelines. Maybe it's a real strategy.

A guy with so much cringe who thinks he’s boffo: Cowardice camouflaged in smugness.
In other words, a fraud. A phony. And, because losing presidential candidates never die, they just relocate to another state and run for the U.S. Senate, the American people must now tolerate the national version of the Mitt Romney We All Know In Real Life.

Hope rich is ok. His Nats are in a good place to be: a team that barely made it into the playoffs that is now hitting on all cylinders with a future star in Soto coming of age on the big stage. And finally a manager who doesn't panic and uses his players well. The Astros are still a team of mashers capable of sending any pitching mistake into orbit, and even some non mistakes, but that was a huge win last night.

It's an intriguing Series.
