The Opioid settlement in Ahia strikes me as a classic shakedown, and does nothing to protect the consumer.

Not one penny of the settlement is going to "victims", it is going to two counties. $260 million.

When I had my surgery, and really needed pain management tools I was prescribed opioids. It was the only prescription that Medicare Part D coverage didn't cover (legal reason), and it was a little pricey, couple hundred over three weeks.

Bet the price is going up.

Think citizens in New York are going to benefit after the state shakes down ExxonMobil?

This will be getting a lot of press in the NY/NJ area.

The American Dream Mall will be opening soon. It has a long history of development, with sequential investors who failed. It was finally finished by the same people who own Mall of America.

"The retail portion of the mall is scheduled to open in March 2020. It will be open for just six days a week due to New Jersey's blue laws, which are still in place in Bergen County, where the American Dream mall is located. Blue laws in Bergen County make it illegal to operate most non-food retail on Sunday and have been in place since the 1600s."

Very poor reporting. Bergen County voters abolished the old "blue laws" years ago in a referendum. Paramus with all its regional malls instituted a municipal "blue law," the only one in Bergen County to remain.

The American Dream Mall will be closed on Sundays as a result of a lawsuit the Jets and Giants filed years ago to block the development.

The mall settled the lawsuit by agreeing to close on Sunday to avoid traffic problems withe Metlife Stadium which is on the other side of the NJ Turnpike.

Typical news reporting. The more you know about something, the easier it is to call out bad reporting.

Is Romney 14 years old? He’s getting stranger by the day.

Captain Hate

My only, maybe, comment about last night is the GOP has to earn my vote in the future, a concept that's been foreign to them recently and only happens if voters stop reflexively supporting them when they lie about honoring their campaign pledges. I didn't vote for Rob Portman in his last election and with his undermining of legal ways to build the wall, and disingenuous response to my email about that, it's not happening next time. If he loses next time, too damn bad. Those assholes will have to learn the hard way that they work for me and lying to me is not a smart thing to do.

jim nj

Don't mind me if I babble about the American Dream Mall. It's taken over sixteen years to develop with several construction shutdowns.

It has been fascinating to watch it's development. Owned by the Mall of America people, it's built on the same scale.

It will have the Nickelodeon Park, a huge water park, an indoor ski slope and many retail stores.

Will it succeed? I have no idea, but with the Mall of America people in charge it may.

Jane

Since the “whistleblower” was the basis of impeachment, shouldn’t the case be dismissed if he won’t testify?

Captain Hate,

I hear you. I AM going out to vote in the municipal elections because a very nice young woman came to my door and asked for my vote. We had a long discussion about chuckholes (potholes) and I got to say my piece.

And get this - she wrote me a thank you note!!

This is for city council. I am the same way about those guys in the House and Senate. Little chance I will get a GOP rep, though, because I am in Andre Carson's district. That's next year.

I had to unfollow Kyle Bass. His 100% shrieking about China 100% of the time has gotten old. No nuance, just hair-on-fire.

It’s instinctive to side with the protesters given who they protest against. But there’s been (what is to me, anyway) a remarkable incuriosity regarding who the protest organizers are, and their end goals. Plus (again, to me) troubling hints of propaganda and Pallywood in the presentation. Bass seems to be involved with this protest as a pipeline, if not an adviser.

Wonder if Trump knows some of these answers, and that explains why he hasn’t jumped in overtly on the side of the protest?

CH, if there was a viable, more conservative party, I would gravitate toward it.

Hillary’s attack on Tulsi has certainly brought out the conspiracy theorists on all sides.

Didn’t the dems explicitly start recruiting ex-military a few years back, so as not to appear so anti-American? Wasn’t Tulsi one of those recruits?

What kind of skeleton does Romney have in his closet that would cause him to ally with the Progressives in opposition of Trump knowing that it destroys whatever reputation he had with GOP voters?

I don’t think there are skeletons. This is who Mitt is. It’s who he’s always been.

I’d say he only runs as a Republican because he knew he could never win as a Democrat, but ultimately he shares the goals of the
Progressives (primarily that he and people like him should rule over is, and we should shut up and be grateful for it).

Due to upcoming election, Merkel backs away from multi-culti
http://bejohngalt.com/2019/10/old-commie-sow-multiculturalism-has-failed/
"Now that Merkel’s party is in deep trouble in the coming elections, she has decided to “come clean.” Don’t expect this to be covered by CNN."

Attempts to build a multicultural society in Germany have “utterly failed”, Chancellor Angela Merkel says.

She said the so-called “multikulti” concept – where people would “live side-by-side” happily – did not work, and immigrants needed to do more to integrate – including learning German.

The comments come amid rising anti-immigration feeling in Germany.

A recent survey suggested more than 30% of people believed the country was “overrun by foreigners”.

The study – by the Friedrich Ebert Foundation think-tank – also showed that roughly the same number thought that some 16 million of Germany’s immigrants or people with foreign origins had come to the country for its social benefits.

I have to think about this a bit, but I think she's missing a few items, including isolation of thought.

James D.

Cognitive dissonance alert:

The cover story in today's NY Times is all about the loss of U.S. "clout" due to President Trump's wanting to withdraw troops from endless war zones.

The NY Times does not approve of this, of course, because it's President Trump doing it, even though they bitterly condemned the deployments in the first place under W, and cheered when Obama withdrew troops during his term.

And the very first "expert" they cite and quote in the article, right there on the front page, is someone from the "Foundation for the Defense of Democracies" and the National Security Advisor to Dick Cheney when he was vice president.

Apparently the NY Times has forgotten how they condemned Cheney as an evil, blood-soaked warmonger for eight years, accused him of being a puppetmaster who tricked W into going to war, wanted him charged with war crimes, and on and on and on.

But now, because Orange Man Bad, Dick Cheney was right, and American troops should be deployed everywhere, flexing American muscle, forever.

henry

Melinda, the news is all groupthink anyway. What difference does varied ownership make if all the opinion / slant is the same?

James D.

Also from today's NY Times, loathsome and corrupt Cy Vance lets more wealthy and well-connected rapists go free:

https://www.nytimes.com/2019/10/22/nyregion/19-women-accused-a-gynecologist-of-abuse-why-didnt-he-go-to-prison.html

James D.

And also in today's NY Times, Andrew Cuomo has some ideas about government control of local news:

https://www.nytimes.com/2019/10/21/nyregion/verizon-news-cable-ny.html

Some highlights:

Two state lawmakers are proposing a requirement that any cable company operating in New York offer a local news channel with “news, weather and public affairs programming,” according to a draft of the bill. The programming would have to be independently produced; companies could not simply rebroadcast others’ existing news shows.

and

It also would offer a concrete example of shifting attitudes toward corporate responsibility, as public officials, voters and even business leaders acknowledge the need for firms to think not only of profits but also of their impact on society.

and

“These companies don’t listen when it comes to us encouraging them to keep local programming,” said State Senator Kevin Thomas, a Democrat, one of the bill’s sponsors. “So there comes a time when the Legislature has to tell them. Leaving them to self-regulate, they do things for their own profit-making schemes.”

and

Some politicians accused Verizon of prioritizing profits over jobs and public interest.

and

Under the law, New York’s Public Service Commission, which regulates utilities including cable, water and natural gas, would decide what qualified as local news. It would also dictate how long and how often each channel was required to show it

and

But supporters of the measure say that the bill is a direct response to the excessive deregulation of telecommunications companies and a declaration that companies can and should give back in exchange for the state’s permission to operate in New York.

I am pretty sure that getting a license would include carrying puff pieces on the legislature, if nothing else.

I'm certain of that.

Rather than grant cable companies local monopolies (with all the attendant kickbacks to legislators) and make demands of them in return, a far better solution would be to prohibit state-granted monopolies and have open competition among cable providers.

Then, if people wanted local news, they'd go with the cable company that offered it, and shun the ones that didn't.

But I suppose there's less room for graft in that, so it won't ever happen.
