UPDATE: Well, as reported by Carl Prine;
What none of the parties knew was that minutes before the Pentagon announced Esper’s decision, Gallagher told his attorney, Timothy Parlatore, that he had decided to voluntarily relinquish his trident for the good of the SEALs, the president and the country, believing that he unwittingly had become a lightning rod for criticism and partisan division.
What a true patriot. I'm glad that he didn't have to do so.
Anyone got any good ideas on where a 20-something female with a week available before giving a presentation outside London in March should go on the continent before getting themselves back across the channel in time?
This bit from Simon Kupor at FT has to be parody, but the emanations from the internationalist bubble-people makes it hard to tell. Even if parody ... deep down this is how a lot of people who so hate the Republican led USA and Tory led UK think.
Either way, what a fun read this is. If parody, it isn't all that good of a parody ... or is it?
All I can think of is what I like to tell alternative history types who wonder, "What if foreign powers intervened in our civil war?"
I can't read the Financial Times link (paywalled), but here is the link:

“How to stop a civil war” says the cover of the latest Atlantic magazine. I can suggest a fix: the international community should intervene in the US. Of course Americans have a right to self-determination but the priority now is saving democracy.
It’s hard to assess the risk of political violence, given the US tradition of everyday gunslinging: the rival candidates for state elections in Montana, who each made ads showing themselves firing rifles at television screens, looked like actors playing Afghan warlords. Still, the recent ethnopolitical terror attacks in El Paso, Pittsburgh and elsewhere were shocking even by US standards.
The much tamer UK needs watching too. Like Americans, Britons have been upgrading their political views into their identities and dismissing opponents as traitors. Both countries now intend to resolve their conflict with winner-take-all elections.
Such scenarios rarely end well, warns former Yemeni government minister Rafat Al-Akhali, a fellow at Oxford’s Blavatnik School of Government. He says: “A lot of people in the regions that we work with thought we had to transfer their experiences of national dialogue to the UK and other countries.” So what should interventions in the US and potentially Britain look like?
Washington used to advocate a set schedule for countries in conflict. A binary election only worsens polarisation. Instead, says Al-Akhali, the first step is power sharing: a transitional government that includes all conflicting sides.
Next comes an Afghan-style loya jirga, or grand assembly, to kick off a national dialogue. Yemen’s brought together political parties, but also youth, women, civil society, southern secessionists and northern Houthi rebels. A US dialogue could look remarkably similar.
Given the death of truth, a South African-style Truth and Reconciliation Commission wouldn’t work in the US. Americans may also need to abandon the polarising impeachment of Donald Trump and let him seek exile in a friendly country: the model could be Ukraine’s kleptocratic pro-Kremlin former president Viktor Yanukovich, now based out of Russia.
Yeah, those are all countries who set a fine example. "Power Sharing?" Hmmmm, sounds like a plea for beleaguered Democrats who know they will be decimated int eh next election.

All that FT article does is verify that the left believe that in a shooting civil war they are outgunned and just need to scare the bee-jeebers out of their pajama boys.
Just thought everyone should know this movie is apparently a hit piece on Roger Ailes and Fox News. I am not interested in anything political from Hollywood except maybe Clint Eastwood's movie on Richard Jewell, and in fact, one of my sisters and I may go see the original "White Christmas" at the restored old movie theater down in Franklin.
Thanks everyone for the good suggestions and info from JOM Travelogue.
Will share a funny story from yesterday. Son is here and planning for a few days of wilderness camping. He has some kind of battery powered heater of cans he takes with him, but decides to get a few fresh cans.
Red goes with him to grocery store so they can spend some time together and comes home giggling. Apparently the store cashier ringing up his purchases thought he was buying his Thanksgiving meal and was clearly feeling very sorry for him.
Al-Jazeera announces it has partnered with Bloomberg.
Now it seems to me that this should get a little more attention than the Trump Hotel in DC, which I am constantly reading about why the President should be forced to sell so that he cannot profit from it.
As I understand it, al-Jazeera is at least partially funded by Qatar.
Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday because of the ability of family members to see one another and spend time together.
Two of my nieces went together downtown to run in the 5 mile Turkey Trot.
Both decided to do the nine minute mile and finished in forty five minutes.
One has done a marathon and the other s half marathon.
Me too, Mary Rose! Thanksgiving feels like the most pure of the holidays - it inspires us to gather and give thanks and express gratitude for all we have.
This was the first year in ages we didn't travel to family (work constraints), and my parents were unable to travel to us due to illness. It was a small, but laughter-filled table, with copious amounts of food. Tonight, we host a Pot Luck Leftover and Game Night with friends, which I hope to make an annual event.
Good morning, JOM, a belated Happy Thanksgiving. Was busy hosting and traveling yesterday. First we had 12 family and friends over for a 2:30 pm dinner, then Ubered out to the island (Queens, really) to my brother's place where there was other family. On the way back almost ended up somewhere upstate because the driver, evidently not the sharpest knife in the drawer, took a wrong turn on to I-95 N instead of S. Fortunately I was monitoring.
The only low point was when Mrs K, against explicit instructions, brought up something political. How do you discuss issues with 18-year-olds who think they know everything? The idea that there may even be two legitimate points of view doesn't enter their thinking.
The topic was the protest at the Harvard-Yale game, where hundreds of students stormed onto the field demanding divestment from energy companies. That 'carbon' is a bad thing is axiomatic, so it's only a matter of what methods are appropriate, not whether they just might be wrong on the whole issue.
It's not just politics. 18-year-olds seem to think they know what they should be taught. So they make demands at universities about the curriculum. I read that at Harvard the TAs are unionized and going on strike. The lunatics are taking over the asylum.
I have no idea where ZH is getting their 5 dead. I have on both Sky News and BBC and police are reporting one dead. There is a suspicious white lorry blocking the bridge roadway and police currently trying to get in.
I love Mont St. Michel if for no other reason that it's so small and self contained that you can totally explore it in a day or so. Plus the Abbey at the top is neat and they usually have music programs in the evening (or did when I was there). Whatever place we ate at had the most awesome seafood salad (fruit de la mer) I've ever had; the only problem was it was so huge it took me forever to eat and, since they won't bring another course until the current one is finished by all, everyone else in my family was griping about it.
We were there in August and the tides are pretty extreme, so my daughter and I went hiking across the tidal flats to an uninhabited island until a local advised us the incoming tide dictated we beat a retreat.
Al-Jazeera announces it has partnered with Bloomberg.
Well, they already openly declared they’re a propaganda arm for the Bloomberg campaign and the Democrat Party, and no longer an objective news organization (not that they ever were). So they may as well go the rest of the way and sell themselves to a hostile foreign power.
Watching FOX, some named Danny Coulson credential credential credential Assistant FBI DIRECTOR.
Tells ME about how great he, London and all Law enforcement is. Then he tells me blah blah blah.
It's not just politics. 18-year-olds seem to think they know what they should be taught.
18 year olds have ALWAYS thought they know everything. There were probably 18 year old cavemen telling their parents they knew how to kill wooly mammoths better than their stupid old parents did.
The difference is, up until the late 1950s, adults tended to ignore the protestations of those oh-so-smart teens.
Everything changed with “Rebel Without a Cause”. That movie was the start of the downfall of our civilization.
OK, exaggerating just a bit but not much. That was the first time pop culture really began to worship youth and tell teens they really did know better and should be in charge. The cowardly campus administrators
in the 1960 then cemented that viewpoint and were all suffering with that now.

Happy late Thanksgiving all. It was a bittersweet Thanksgiving this year since our Matriarch passed away. Shirl always prepared a feast for our family. But my father in law didn't want to host it this year, even though he wouldn't have had to do anything. My wife and her sister didn't want to host it either but after calling around to see if there were any restaurants open and taking reservations, my youngest stepped up to the plate and invited everyone over to his house for Thanksgiving. So we've begun a new tradition with my sons in laws and their traditions, a turkey first brined, then marinated in wine, a lot of wine and a lot of chourico...and it was delicious! Hope all is well with everyone.
I was just told by FOX NEWS, that the British Authorities are looking for a motive!!! Police are
"TREATING THIS, AS A POSSIBLE TERRORIST ATTACK" This type of INSULTING HORSE SHIT, sickens me.
Now they are speculating about BREXIT.
Simple mother fucking question. Who is the PERP,
what does he LOOK LIKE, SMELL LIKE, and what does his I.D. say? I'm sure the COPS don't know ANY of that.
After Tapper's efforts to make the President's visit to the troops into something bad, and after reading some replies to various posts by Leftists, nothing surprises me.
Yesterday I read that visiting the troops in Afghanistan was expected, and not only should he not be praised, but criticized because he hadn't done it before. (Times Obama visited Afghanistan in 8 years, 4. None during a holiday, and none to visit troops.)
I was also told that it was no sacrifice for him, because unlike Obama, he wasn't close to his family and liked being away from them.
Honestly, these people are insane. That is my charitable position. Otherwise, I have to label them as flat-out evil.
Senior Adviser to Democrat presidential candidate Pete Buttigieg appears to be happy that a Democrat harassed a member of the Trump admin in public to the point where the official had to leave the event
It's so vile I cannot deal with them. I am glad that my extremely lefty nephew and his guy friend who is even worse didn't come to Thanksgiving. I would have heard crap like that times 20.
I now regret how reticent I was about Obama for 8 years, only discussing his crimes with people on line. It drives me nuts, especially because I think the Presient is wrongfully maligned.

Posted by: James D. | November 29, 2019 at 10:20 AM
How do you discuss issues with 18-year-olds who think they know everything?
Point out that they don't. Forcefully if necessary.

Yes. I did point this out, though admittedly not as forcefully (as it was Thanksgiving dinner) as I might have.

I'm sure you were suitably tactful. Still, using family gatherings to spew propaganda like indoctrinated tools is as counterproductive as it is rude.

Hope all is well with everyone.

jimmyk,
After Tapper's efforts to make the President's visit to the troops into something bad, and after reading some replies to various posts by Leftists, nothing surprises me.
Otherwise, I have to label them as flat-out evil.

jimmyk,
It's so vile I cannot deal with them.

That's especially funny in light of the article I read a few days ago about how little money legal pot growers are making because the illegal black market guys are undercutting them.
Pot growers; State, please help us.
State; OK, we'll help you the only way we know how. Here's a big new tax just for you. You're welcome.
