Here we go again. I actually think the beginning of the end of Elizabeth Warren's campaign's end will be marked as yesterday with the release of her progressive fan fiction on Medicare For All.
Paul Krugman has the funniest reaction - serious libs pulled this together, the numbers sort of add up, this will never make it through Congress anyway, so lets talk about something else. Uh huh. I think Biden and Buttigieg will be happy to talk about this. Time will tell.
DO LET ME ADD: Among her revenue raisers is a proposal to adopt a mark-to-market on capital gains for the 1 percenters. She thinks that will raise $2 trillion, which ain't hay. Presumably she is getting a cue from Sen. Wyden, the ranking Dem on the Senate Finance Committee. As a longshot, maybe the Minuteman got results! (Yeah, yeah, this got booed off here and it hardly makes me want to back Warren, but the idea is coming on like a freight train. President Buttigieg will be looking for sock-the-rich revenue ideas, especially Constitutional ones. Of course, that might mean we're safe until 2025...

TM, why do you want to soak the “rich”? The 1% was the limited target of the original income tax. You can see how well that limit held every April. Here in the internet age, government greed moves at internet speed... so that 1% will be 110% within the year it passes.
Worst idea in the universe. (Is say except for communism, but this tax is communism).

So why not government motors for all?
Whole wheat bread for all?
Oh yeah, they're socialists now, so it is going to be socialism for all soon enough.
The reality of course would be medicaid, food stamps and subsistence welfare for all except the connected.
What's the point of this glacial divergence?
Let's just cut the interregnum and start shooting each other and see who wins.

Seemed pretty simple to this man - if a woman was serious about pursuing the feminist “have it all”, she was going to be working damn hard, and there was a good chance she’d fail. Priorities/choices always had to be a part of that.

Netflix is going even deeper into debt and the whole industry is following them. Elon Musk is still losing his ass. It would seem the only one who has a clue is Buffett, who is mainly a rent seeker. I smell a lot of vaporware out there.

I have known leftists since I was in college. They are never, ever interested in constructive things. Instead, they are always interested in tearing things down. That is why they blow things up, set things on fire, and generally cause mass mayhem.
I have never known a leftist who wanted to build a house or repair an antique table. They aren't interested in tasks like that.
Instead, they want to blow up a dam, set off a pipe bomb, or carve graffitti in the side of the cliff.

Thanks Another Bob (and Jim Sunnyvale & Barbara on the previous thread). It would be interesting to know if Republican women feel more comfortable / happier / less guilty about their choices than their liberal and/or feminist peers. It seems to me that we're actually considerably more independent than they are, in that we've made our choices and accepted whatever the consequences of those choices may be/have been. We don't need or seek the continuous reinforcement of our peers.

My understanding was that Twitter was just eliminating paid ads too, but it would be interesting to see someone trying to figure out how to write the rule that prevented folks from posting an ad in their own twitter stream. In fact, I would't be surprised if their weren't plenty of folks willing to do just that for a modest fee.
ABob: I'm not sure the implication was that the Twitter mob would take care of the personal tweets, but they do seem to be swarming everywhere. I suspect their complaints are why so many totally inoffensive tweets are being marked as containing sensitive material, which means an extra step if you want to read them. I'm not very handy with Twitter myself, but on one person's page I visited almost every single tweet carried a warning. I had to think that some little mobsters must have just gone right down the page ticking off complaints without even bothering to read as they went.
In any case, is Jack what's-his-name really stupid enough to try messing with the President's tweets? Somehow I doubt it. I'd love it if the President took his business to an alternate venue, along with all the activity he generates, but I think it's hard to game the odds on whether that would serve his cause best or not.

No.
And the Twitter gangsters I referred to are the Twitter employees who will find reasons to delete/suspend “Trump War Room”, Parscale, et al.
My guess is the Trump team anticipated Twitter playing (more) games and was prepared to respond with mass paid tweets, hence the new policy.

Ironically, I ended up going a pretty traditional route myself. Then it turned out that I wasn't really all that traditional.

My feeling is that the Democrats don't have anything else going for them, including a viable candidate. I think they decided to make impeachment "official" with the Thursday vote, so that they can keep an impeachment document on the burner, ready to go, the second they can find a "crime" to squeeze into it. They will do nothing but beat the bushes and demand documents & testimony for fishing purposes till election day 2020. I just pray we can take back the House, because they are having so much fun, they'll keep fishing for the next four years too.
I'm hoping to find a source that identifies House races where some strategic contributions could really make a difference. I really don't feel like giving anything to the House & Senate Republican Committees anymore, although they do provide structural and GOTV support & experience for candidates who may struggle on their own.

I wouldn't waste my money but that's just me. There are surely some very nervous incumbents who've argued that government is the answer and then haven't done a damn thing for their constituents. Jimsunnyvale--thanks for the Jeeves! But I'm pretty sure Wodehouse had no more than a cursory understanding of Spinoza (as he did of Nietzsche)--he just thought Spinoza was basically all right and knew (through intuition) that Nietzsche was totally wrong. He wasn’t an intellectual but the smartest of the smart. Did y’all know I am the author of I think the most recent Dictionary of National Biography entity on Wodehouse?
Narc—our meetup was on Aug. 30th. As you know, I have reason to remember.
JMH—how did I do four kids as an academic? As an academic! The truth is academics don’t have to work very hard. First child as a grad student—I was 24—I had a University Fellowship at Vanderbilt which meant I didn’t have to teach, so I took a term off from teaching (you have to teach to get a good record to get a job, plus I’m good at it), and then when my first was small after that first term, a lovely Bangladeshi lady in our married student housing compound watched her three days a week for four hours. Her own daughter was the same age, so it was all just nice. When the oldest was three, we moved into rented place in a house, but even then the daycare we needed was just three days a week for half a day. Then I got a tenure-line job at Trinity, but she was then ready for five day a week (to 3:00 p.m.) nursery at a wonderful church school—this couldn’t have harmed her. I could go on—the point is that academics technically don’t work hardly at all—I mean their show-up hours are minimal—so with care and planning one can work from home and have four kids and not at all have to put them in 9-5 daycare—I never did. My colleagues moan and groan about having no time but I suspect them of either being colossal time-wasters or of not being as smart and on the ball as they should be. I have always worked FAST.
Hey, Pin! The reason the canon did not much include women writers is that outside of various whacking geniuses like Austen and George Eliot (aka for those who don’t know Mary Ann Evans) or Charlotte and Emily Bronte, the conditions of educating women were so lopsided in prior generations that only the geniuses could break through. The woman you linked seems to be a mild Stalinist. I myself am a Mary Wollstonecraft feminist—women are the intellectual equals of men, if in different dimensions, and they need an equally strong education.
Henry, I think the current limit is $14K.

President Trump is attending the Ultimate Fight Championship tonight in Madison Square Garden with GOP Leader Kevin McCarthy, Rep. Mark Meadows, Rep. Peter King, Donald Trump, Jr. and Eric Trump.
They were invited by Dana White, the organization president.

Captain:
Well, I'm figuring every little bit helps. If we want Trump to be able to make any progress or any swamp draining he manages to do on his own permanent, we need to take the house back. We have laws to invoke in the future, not just executive orders. Maybe I'm getting way too far out front, but I'm thinking about where things go after his second term.

the point is that academics technically don’t work hardly at all—I mean their show-up hours are minimal
Yes, the required direct contact hours are few in academia. However, the academics I know work incredibly long hours, just on their own schedule. The travel in the sciences also tends to be brutal.
It is much the same with MrsJ and me. We each work for ourselves, and can choose our hours. As long as we put in a LOT of hours.

JMH,
It's never too early to think where we go post Golden Scalpweasel. I'm very pleased with how Kevin McCarthy seems to be developing a spine, greatly exceeding expectations. That trio in Miss Marple's 9:29 is encouraging.
Fixing the economy was child's play; all it took was removing Gaylord's light loafers from its neck. Fixing the GOP is serious bidness.

What an incredible photo, Narciso. Just stunning.
Clarice:
Yes. I can check out his endorsements, too, because he's probably got the master list, doesn't he?
