The Nats winning reminded me of when the Dallas Mavs ran the table and only had home court advantage in the first round. As much as I enjoyed the Cavs championship in 2016, I had at least as much fun with the Nats improbable Series win. It reminded me of the Indians improbably going up against the Cubs juggernaut only the Nats had two bona fide aces in Strasburg and Scherzer.

I saw a picture of Scherzer's father; dear God he's just as goofy as Mad Max.

Another Bob

Probably shouldn’t have clicked Jim, but I did.

I know political campaigns are remarkably cynical and sometimes remarkably stupid operations. But I’m really not wanting to believe a presidential campaign is being run on that kind of basis.

Jim,SunnyvaleCA,USA

Well, it is after all the Warren campaign :) :)

The Infamous Ignatz

--There’s talk around (including here) about that, up to and including killing. I just don’t see it.--

I don't think removal of Trump would be sufficient, but, just as the Boston Massacre, years before the revolution set things on a certain course so too would the left and the state thwarting the will of the people now.
I've made this point before, but it lends a certain certainty to things if one absorbs and acknowledges it; the left will not stop on their long march to one party rule until they are compelled to.
It is their inimical and inherent nature.

Another Bob

I’m with you on the ultimate goals of the left Ig. Not so sure analogies with the past quite apply though.

Boiled down, America is too fat, dumb and happy (mostly dumb) to flip over the table now. Going to have to get a whole lot worse.

Plus half of America is on the side of the lefties. For whoever reasons, they all seem to think they’ll be on the handle end of the whip.

Another Bob

And whatever reasons, too.

Manuel Transmission

AB, I think that somewhere between 1 and 10 pct are more than ready to lock and load. If Rolling Thunder acts on their threat and are followed by another 9/12 group of us old geezers, but with our ARs strapped across our fat and wheezing chests, I don’t think there’s a way to stop it. I distinctly recall Iggy not liking the Bundy ranch standoff, but multiply that by 10K across the country and there’s no way to stop it. My 2c.

Another Bob

Obviously, I only have visibility into a vanishingly small percentage of the country. That said, those numbers seem wishful thinking to me.

(BTW, put me in that fat and wheezing chests group too. I have no illusions about how militarily effective me and my Mini-14 would be at revolution-fighting.)

What was Rolling Thunder’s threat?

Another Bob

For scale, at the low-end three million people willing and able to arm up? Thirty million at the high end? The US had the largest armed force in world history in 1945 with 12 million.

Pull those numbers with the right leadership, you’d definitely get something done.

Another Bob

And disregard my question about Rolling Thunder, I looked it up.

Manuel Transmission

Somewhat related: there’s a stat I vaguely recall that in the Fall, the number of hunters mucking about in the brush in EACH state is larger than any standing army today.

Another Bob

I’ve read numbers like 700k in Wisconsin. That would put it in the top ten. I doubt that each of the other 49 would beat that.

That’s the number of people willing, able and equipped to kill an animal for sport and/or food. I think you’d agree that’s a long way from being willing and able to kill government officials and probably some proportion of their neighbors.

If things get desperate enough, I agree some would act. We’re a long, long way from that.

jim nj

I don't see conservatives going out in the streets to kill liberals. Killing another human being is anathema to most of us conservatives.

Killing in self-defense is a different matter. If anti-fa, or some other group, raises the ante I have little doubt that some people will oppose them violently and feel righteous while doing it.

Manuel Transmission

Wasn’t trying to imply that the ‘army’ was ready to shoot, just that there’s a pretty big Venn circle to start an overlay of potential players. Those Bundy guys drove across several states in their pickumups and never pulled a trigger, but it could have gone south in a millisecond.

People are out in the streets protesting leftist policies, so, of course, there is a "Nazi" emergency.

We won't respond to your criticisms other than to call you "Nazis."

The European far-right seems to be more motivated than the US far-right. I think they feel they have more to be worried about.

The US has taken in far more immigrants, legal and illegal, than Europe has, but ours seem to assimilate better.

Or put differently, the mass of immigrants into the US seem to hold similar values as Americans. They come for economic reasons, not to impose Sharia rules.

I don't want illegal immigrants here, but at least they seem to understand our system.

One very interesting statistic. 98% of the rise in oil production is in the US.

US companies own all the expertise in the new production technologies.

jim nj

Hoyden,

Agreed. People in Germany and other European countries have legitimate concerns, but if they speak up or try to organize, they get shut down with the "Nazi" label.

They are what I would call "traditionalists" not far-right. Or they are racists for opposing the importation of immigrants who will never fit into the national tradition.

They really aren't asking for radical change, they just want the undergoing radical change to go away.

jim nj

Thank you Clarice for your Pieces article.

While I was initially annoyed over this attempt to "impeach" Trump it seems to be losing traction with each passing day.

I'm sure the rabid left is sucking it up and envisioning victory, but anybody capable of "critical thought" sees this as a re-make of "The Producers" and "Springtime for Hitler and Germany."

hoyden

jim nj,

People in Germany and other European countries have legitimate concerns, but if they speak up or try to organize, they get shut down with the "Nazi" label.

Heh, the European weenie news agencies are pikers. "Nazi" is just one of many labels we get from the DNC MFM. Not only do Hong Kong and Europe not have a 2A, they don't have 1A either.

They really aren't asking for radical change, they just want the undergoing radical change to go away.

This isn't so different from our situation. Leftists everywhere are always trying to destroy life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. Leftists will never be happy until they unconditionally rule over everyone.

Thank you, Clarice, for highlighting the Schiff For Brains Democrat Train to Nowhere. Local DNC MFM Blue Hell News would never report report those details.

Clarice concludes with

To be blunt about it, the “evidence” Schiff has elicited is as weak as his party’s candidates to replace Trump.

This is rather silly. I and others I knew were able to build "zip guns" on our own when we were teenagers.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Improvised_firearm

jim nj

Hoyden,

From what I was reading Germany has a 1A, but call it Article V. Apparently it's easier to modify than our 1A.

In the US we argue about how absolute the 1A and 2A are. Elsewhere they are more "practical" and feel free to limit both.

hoyden

jim nj, even before reading your link, Germany Readies Further Restrictions On Guns And Speech, you provide an example of Europe's "practical" approach. Democrats call it "common sense", of which they possess neither.

I myself am a Mary Wollstonecraft feminist—women are the intellectual equals of men, if in different dimensions, and they need an equally strong education.

I think this is a perfect description. And I was wondering how you managed a tenure career and four kids..... I have noticed that most of the academics I know seem very good at wasting huge amounts of time.

Mary Rose, that "life lived in chapters" was a most helpful way to look at those hard times. It was a good reminder that within the great arc of life, there are mistakes and wrong turns and wonderful moments and none last forever, but build on each other to create a narrative, and if you're lucky enough to recognize it, a fulfilling life of joyful moments and a sense of the future with children.

Back to catch up.

It would be interesting to know if Republican women feel more comfortable / happier / less guilty about their choices than their liberal and/or feminist peers. It seems to me that we're actually considerably more independent than they are, in that we've made our choices and accepted whatever the consequences of those choices may be/have been. We don't need or seek the continuous reinforcement of our peers.

I'd say yes, anecdotally. In the extremely liberal bubble I operate within, most of my friends have masters and PhD's that they obtained in their 20's, took time off to have kids and found that their careers were no longer conducive to a sane family life. They spend a lot of time complaining about this and k'vetching that in an academic company town, having the right post-graduate degree is essential to the jobs available and they already have student debt and are wondering about the sanity of taking on more when they have kids going to college.

It's a very interesting debate. I've told my daughter that if she happens to find the guy she wants to build a life with, it might be wise to have kids early while it's easy to get pregnant, and then start planning for the career she wants when her kids are teenagers because priorities for a work/life balance change. It's not selfish, I swear.

"think the current limit is $14K."

Would that be $28k if each parent gifts?

Ok Boomers-- I know you know there are search engines that let you find out the answers to these burning questions in honestly, less than two seconds. What a world! ;-)

https://www.investopedia.com/terms/g/gifttax.asp

(Anybody else get from their kids "Let me Google that for you" when you ask such a question? I've even got that from my young partners! In a bit more polite form: "Let me look that up right now!" as they pull out their phone.)

Current limit is 15K per person; one can pay anyone's educational and/or medical expenses if paid directly to the institution without that counting towards the 15 K.

So yes, if a lucky kid has two parents who are so inclined, they get 30K a year. As can their spouse. And each of their children. JACKPOT!!

If their four grandparents are of that mindset, they can get 60K more.

This explains a lot of "activist" kids, right?

Also, per my embedded source, it is how so many of these young staffers manage to live in DC on their paltry salaries (in relation to high, high, high housing costs). And wear suits to work. Parents are supplementing.

Which right there, selects for a certain mindset.

Very few of my right -thinking friends who can gift their kids do that. They help with things sometimes, like down payments for houses, but not much outright yearly max gifting.
More common among the few D voters I still talk with about such matters.
