What did they think was going to happen?

We'll find out in about 7 years in NYC, as Mayor Bane has succeeded in getting Rikers Island shut down, replaced by four new prisons dropped in the middle of Brooklyn, Bronx, and Manhattan, with a combined capacity less than half of Rikers. And this is reminiscent of old Fox Butterfield:

Before the vote on Thursday, [City Council member] Mr. Johnson said that years of declining crime rates show that the inmate population would continue to drop and that the new jails would meet future needs.

He doesn't seem to get that maybe all those people getting put in prison helped to produce those declining crime rates.

Humans co-evolved with immune-related diseases -- and it's still happening

President-Elect Jim,SunnyvaleCA

Interesting article, jim nj.
A bit different from the book I'm reading. The article seems to emphasize how, with longer life spans, humans now have enough time for previously rare diseases to occur.
The book I'm reading is talking more about how, with a "cleaner" environment, human immune systems don't develop properly, as they would if only we got properly buffeted early in life.

Barbara

We were watching a made for television movie, The Gift of Love, A Christmas Story, tonight on Amazon Prime TV. One of the film's stars is Polly Holiday who rose to fame as "Flo" in the 1980s TV comedy, Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore.

I wondered what she had done since the movie and looked up her bio on imdb. The bio ended with this:

"Although she had been a lifelong Democrat for the majority of her life, in the Fall of 2019 she updated her political affiliation to Republican; having been dissatisfied with the direction the Democratic Party had been going in both national and local offices."

I have to hope that there are many others who have the same view.

jim nj

Jim, Sunny,

I'm willing to accept both views and more. What we are exposed to when we are young should effect immune system responses then and later in life.

As lifespans have increased it gives more time for auto-immune diseases to express themselves.

I think the recent studies on human biomes are showing that imbalances there may also be involved.

Humans aren't really individual animals. We're colonies. Things living on us or in us. Even things invading us on a cellular level. Changes in DNA that protect us from one thing but that make us susceptible to other things.

Kids aren't as free-range as they used to be. Household cleansers are more super-duper than they used to be. Effective vaccines have exploded in number over the last 70 years.

Oddly enough these days, one of those most scary things that can happen to somebody today is being operated on in a hospital and getting a hospital acquired infection.

jim nj

Over the last 100-200 years average life expectancy has exploded, but most people don't remember that the overall number was dragged down by a very high infant mortality rates. We have had very long-lived people for a very long time.

Those long-lived people either never got an infection or were able to fight them off.

Nowadays we have antibiotics that can cure almost any life-threatening infection with a simple course of treatment.

Yet new scourges, threats to humankind, regularly arise in nature. As though the whole ecosystem is designed to tamp down human overpopulation.

It's even a favorite theme in sci-fi movies. Some scientist intent on saving the world creates a virus to remove humans from the face of the earth.

https://www.dawn.com/news/1520021/70-killed-in-clashes-between-syrian-forces-idlib-fighters

From what I have been reading - Syria and Russia can bomb or shell almost anything they want. The land battle seems to be a different story.

What one side takes, the other recovers. Like a stalemate.

I suspect the Idlib-fighters are better led, more maniacal, willing to accept martyrdom and generally better motivated than their enemy.

Syria and Russia won't win if they abide by the Geneva Convention. So they won't. They will go after civilian infrastructure.

Hospitals and aid stations are being bombed.

Are the insurgents hiding in the basements of those facilities? Or is it a tactic to deny medical services to wounded insurgents.

Whatever, this is going to be a very "dirty" military action.

The attacks on Idlib are coming from the south. That will drive non-combatants north. Combatants, if losing, will also move to the north. Eventually they will be at, or over, the Turkish border.

Syria and Russia are trying to impose a military solution here. Gaining territory isn't going to do it as if that happens the insurgents can't be killed and just scoot into Turkey or some other part of Syria.

anonamom

Anon,

An FYI. I have been off Citalopram entirely for about 3 weeks. No more anti-depressants in my system. No signs, or symptoms, of depression. Instead of sleeping 10-12 hours each night, I'm sleeping 8-10 hours, or less.
Weirdest thing is that I am remembering some dreams when I wake up - that hasn't happened for years.

I'm very pleased, so far, with my decision to try and ditch this medication.

anonamom

As am I!! Congratulations to you for getting your life back. Two hours less time lying abed a day--thats a whole day each week to hang out on JOM!

Those drugs are neurotoxins, and keeping people on them long term is one great big uncontrolled experiment, with lots to be very concerned about.

Here's something you may find of interest:

https://carnivoreaurelius.com/carnivore-diet-results/

The author popped up on my Twitter feed a while ago, with a very funny Tweet that caught my eye, so I started getting his newsletter.
IIRC, Jordan Peterson's (currently popular Canadian psychologist) daughter had some severe autoimmune issue, went carnivore, got better. He may have advocated for it too.

Plenty of current thinking that inflammation plays a major role in anxiety and depression (not to mention dementia, Boomers!)--and this is most certainly a low inflammation, nutrient dense way of eating, if nothing else.

https://carnivoreaurelius.com/carnivore-diet-results/

jim nj

Anon,

No, I didn't read any of his stuff and I just happened to be typing while you were posting.

So far, so good.

I will be talking to to my bi-polar sister, ex-addict about this.

I didn't tell her that I was trying this. She takes a cocktail of drugs for the bi-polar condition, but after 20 years of sober, she is still prescribed anti-addict drugs.

Unfortunately, there are clear protocols for prescribing psychiatric drugs, but there is very little literature about how to get off them safely.

So I'm still taking diazepam for anxiety and muscle relaxant. More for the latter than the former. But I admit it has some recreational value. A bit of a buzz to go along with the beer.

I don't drive. I don't operate machinery.

What really worries me is the cocktail of drugs my sister takes and all the interactions among them.

Every time she tries to reduce the dosages, with medical guidance, she runs into a problem.

Not talking to Anon, right now, but to the rest of you - I've seen people prescribed psych meds and when side-effects arose they prescribed more meds to counteract the side-effects. I've seen people so medicated that they can't swing them arms like most of us do because if they do it would throw them off-balance and cause them to fall.

Oh, and some some pysch meds bring in a pretty penny on the black market.

Do you tell your shrink that you really don't need those meds, or do you keep telling the shrink you need them and sell them into the black market.

I hate to say it but the mentally ill can supplement their income by selling drugs they don't really need.

I don't mean to over-share, but I've seen stuff that you haven't.

jim nj

Anon.

I don't have to get up to go to work. I don't set my alarm clock. I get up when I want to.

If I'm having fun posting here I stay up as late as I want.

Lately, I look at the clock when I wake up and say "damn" it's early for me.

jim nj

https://www.suboxone.com/

I have no idea how this works, it's meant to be an anti-addiction drug, a maintenance thing.

It's so highly controlled that they print serial numbers on the the sublingual strips, yet somehow it gets diverted to the black market at $20 a pop.

$600 a month in black market income if you don't need it.

anonamom

Not talking to Anon, right now, but to the rest of you - I've seen people prescribed psych meds and when side-effects arose they prescribed more meds to counteract the side-effects.

That is the rule, not the exception.
Multidrug psychotropic "cocktails," the second treating the unwanted effects of the first, the third the second, and so on and so on.

Again, a wonderful, very readable book on the subject, by a psychiatrist who pretty much has lived it all--from Freudian analysis when he began his education and training, to the hope of having a biological basis (which would mean there would be a drug cure), to how he thinks these "diseases of modernity and trauma"--anxiety, depression, addiction--are best treated/managed.

https://www.amazon.com/Body-Keeps-Score-Healing-Trauma/dp/0143127748/ref=sr_1_2?keywords=the+body+keeps+the+score&qid=1575281669&sr=8-2

jim nj

Anon,

Even as a layman it was obvious to me that the shrinks were oversubscribing.

My thought was it would be better to dial back the original medication before prescribing a second one to counteract the side-effects.

It just doesn't work that way.

Climate change is merely the excuse to target the so-called 'human dimension' and goes back to the 1987 launch from the Brundtland Commission as the MH vision got relaunched globally as the "end of Communism" was about to be staged.

It comes from the UN quote: "the environment does not exist as a sphere separate from human actions, ambitions, and needs."

The fact that the latter is also the bullseye of Tranzi OBE and its renamed successors also launched in 1987 is totally coincidental.
