Elizabeth Warren releases her Medicare For All fan fiction.
She will hold down costs by paying current Medicare reimbursement rates, in a fantasy taken seriously by on one.
Would ‘Medicare for All’ Save Billions or Cost Billions?
...
In our current system, doctors, hospitals and other health care providers are paid by a number of insurers, and those insurers all pay them slightly different prices. In general, private insurance pays medical providers more than Medicare does. Under a Medicare for all system, Medicare would pick up all the bills. Paying the same prices that Medicare pays now would mean an effective pay cut for medical providers who currently see a lot of patients with private insurance.
For a Medicare for all system to save money, it needs to reduce the health care industry’s income somewhat. But if rates are too low, hospitals already facing financial difficulties could be put out of business.
Medicare for All' backers find biggest foe in their own backyard
Hospitals threaten to derail big and small Democratic plans for coverage expansion.
On the revenue side Sen. Warren proposes a spate of new taxes and a level of IRS enforcement and taxpayer compliance that seems unprecedented (in a "Gee, how come nobody ever thought of THAT?" kind of way) - she hopes to raise compliance from 84% to 92%, which is great. Why not 95% like in the UK?
Left unmentioned: the rest of her plan includes having government office workers check under the cushions of every sofa in Federal offices for spare change. Another revenue source is money left by the Tooth Fairy.
This will work.
No it won't. Politico again with Obama alums rehashing their battle scars and guessing Warren has no chance with this.

I didn't realize that Flynn wasn't actually charged until Dec 1st, after he signed the plea deal.
Neat trick; don't charge the subject of an investigation with what you're threatening to until after he pleads and you don't have to show him how you framed him until after he's hung himself.

Does anyone know what the new timeline is on Flynn's case after Sullivan cancelled the, I think, 11/7 hearing? For the people who would know these things, like clarice, does Sullivan have multiple cases going on at the same time that would explain all these delays? Because surely he has a staff to handle the grunt work and this legal crap isn't particle physics.

Captain,
Very true. I should have added that Sullivan’s court is extremely similar to our local courts with its glacial pacing. We just completed a trial on a homicide from almost 7 years ago. Delay wasn’t caused by a lack of a suspect. He was charged within 48 hours of the deed.

Indiana didn't have DST until Mitch Daniels was governor, when he convinced the legislature to institute it because of confusion with shipping and airlines.
Arizona still doesn't have it. The reason the two states didn't have it was because Eugene Pulliam, publisher of the Arizona Republic and The Indianapolis Star, hated it and campaigned against it. Once he died, there was no resistance, so when Daniels was elected governor it was one of the things he wanted to do.
Since I didn't grow up with it until the 90's, I dread it every year.

Here is the story of Flynn -
2 days after Trump won, Obama warned him about Flynn, which Trump thought was a very odd priority. Obama's concern was the Iran deal which Flynn vehemently opposed. Obama was worried Flynn would assist him in ending the deal.
Other than a visit to Russia in June 2013 at Obama's directive there were no visit or connections, until Stefan Halper made up the story about Flynn's dalliance with Svetlana Lokhova. It was meant to frame Flynn. Was Obama aware? No one knows.
Strzok was very concerned that Flynn would get a job with Trump and screw up Crossfire Hurricane,
Posted by: Jane | November 02, 2019 at 12:28 PM
Btw guess who arramged that visit according to julia ioffe, fwiw, none other than the good colonel vindman.
Posted by: Narciso | November 02, 2019 at 12:31 PM
Obama's hundreds of allies in the Intelligence community were also worried about Flynn. He wanted to cut down the NSC staff by a third.
He also wanted to remake the entire IC - drain the swamp.Trump was interested. It was an existential threat.

It all becomes so clear now.
How awful it was to have Obama until the very last second undercutting America, plotting against a newly elected President and trying to sabotage our ability as American citizens to elect the person we wanted to succeed him.
After he cheated in Florida to win in 2912 and lied about Benghazi, this was his final act of treachery, giving the go ahead for Hurricane Crossfire.

Jim Sunnyvale:
I had very mixed reactions to the article you posted yesterday: American Women Need to Shift Their Priorities If They Want to Be Happy. I was willing to ignore the irony of David Brooks as spiritual advisor to America's women, till I got to his conclusion, which is that the solution to our ills is to:
He forgot to add, "and live happily ever after…. " What I object to is the whole idea that there is one prescription for happiness, aside from the question of whether or not it is sex/gender dependent, when the fact is one size does not fit fill all. That, in many ways was/is where the feminist movement itself ultimately went wrong.
IMO, the really "Big Lie" was that women could have a career and raise a family too, without having to sacrifice anything on either side of the equation. Feminists told us we could have it all, and we wanted to believe them. The corollary, however, was that women ought to have careers, and ought to be able to handle both career and family successfully. That was a lose, lose proposition psychologically for all but a very talented few.
In order for women to have both a career and a family, you do have to give up things, like control of your children's development to someone else by, for example, putting them in daycare, and, of course, you have to be able to afford daycare and hope you find practitioners you trust. On the flip side, jobs which allow you to leave work for special occasions or childhood traumas, and teachers meetings, are not generally the ones where you'll be smashing through glass ceilings.
So, women who stayed home, felt as though they should be doing "more important" work as well. Women who put off having families for careers felt bereft at a deeply fundamental level. Both groups resented each other. Women who tried to do it all, felt like failures when they found themselves floundering. Or were just exhausted, by trying to pursue a career while also ending up doing all the traditional household things like cooking & laundry etc. that women had always handled, in addition to all the things that men were doing career-wise. It was a recipe for constant, soul crushing guilt no matter what choices you made.
And that's just how the women's movement affected women who had the luxury of choice. It should have died a natural death once the marketplace for women opened up, back in the 70's and 80's, when the early feminists had made a real difference in terms of opportunities for women.
The antidote, however, is not for women to try to recreate the pre-feminist 50s/60s culture for themselves. That's certainly not an era I'd choose. I don't know what Brooks' advice to men might be, but not everyone gets to marry the man of her dreams or the perfect woman, even if, as the author asserts, "The real secret to success is choosing the right person to marry." If that is the only route to success, you're still going to have an awful lot of unhappy people out there. In fact, it's probably easier to find that someone if you're not focused "like a laser" on the pursuit. Relationships are important, all kinds of relationships, and a happy, supportive marriage is a gift, and a trust. I do think it's incredibly important to have interests or a job which is not dependent on whom you marry or being married, though, something which can help sustain you in the event of loss or enrich the lives of those around you too. The notion that there is a single formula for happiness or success is, a depressing, self-defeating principle, IMO.

So the story became that Flynn had been compromised by Lokohva (and thus Russia even tho Lokova lived in GB). Halper started it and Chistopher Andrew (Halper's colleague, and Lokohva's professor) gave the media 2 sources for verification- both false. They were working for the deep state.
The media went nuts. David Ignatious was and is a big player. He accused Flynn of speaking (colluding) with Kislyak about Obama's policy. Flynn was concerned Obama's sanctions on Russia in the days before he left office, would screw up Russian relations for Trump (Probably their intent).
Flynn did not report his discussion to Pence, - he was doing his job and probably should have but it was during the transition, which was the reason Pence fired him.

Obama had imposed 2 groups of "sanctions" on Russia. The last ones, days before Obama left the WH were intended to screw Trump and further the whole "collusion" narrative. (The first ones were after the annexing of Crimea.)
Flynn, and a lot of people did not consider the stuff done days before as "sanctions'. He told Pence he didn't discuss "sanctions" with Russia. Then the WH told the press there was no discussion of "sanctions" with Kislyak.
Sally yates, of Crossfire Hurricane fame went to the WH to warn don McGahn that indeed flynn had discussed "sanctions.
The press went nuts about the so-called "sanctions. McCabe brought "evidence" to Pence that was the opposite of what Flynn told him.
The WH was in disarray because of the transition. The FBI was out to get Flynn because he wanted to cut the bureau. Trump got bad advice from a number of people.
When Flynn left the WH he was vilified as a liar and a Russian stooge.

It is so loaded with facts that it will take many reads to absorb. Ch 11 which I'm about to read is called: "Becoming Deep Throat". Maybe you guys should guess who that is about.
Posted by: Jane | November 02, 2019 at 02:01 PM
BTW JIB, the whole book indicates that the one person aware of what was going on, and trying to warn the WH was Devin Nunes.

With hard work and enough money you can do it all..But if the job you are holding doesn't pay enough to hire good household help and you are unwilling to cut back your hours for a few years, you cannot. A lot of working mothers who aren't earning a great deal, would have more household income if they stayed home for a few years. That's the fact.Cook your own meals --it will cost you about 1/4 the cost of picking up prepared meals, ordering in or eating out, for example.
Posted by: clarice | November 02, 2019 at 02:13 PM
The press went nuts about the so-called "sanctions. McCabe brought "evidence" to Pence that was the opposite of what Flynn told him.

JM,
I never thought I'd defend David Brooks, but his article seems fairly unremarkable, despite the usual stupidities he can't seem to avoid. And it's not directed at women, but people in general.
The blockquote you attributed to him is actually a quote from Suzanne Venker, who you linked.
And I suspect she is dealing in generalities not absolutes, in the same way one might say fathers are essential to a child's upbringing.

JMH, great write up!
The things that Brooks gets right are
1) pendulum has swung too far
2) it's a healthy situation if most women and most men are trying to create harmonic relationships in order to create strong family environments for raising kiddos
We're never going back.
And feminists have in large part gone off into an unhelpful philosophical space (imo)

Faint praise, DrJ. It was homecoming so I hope most of the alumni parked in the designated lots and took the metro to the Nats parade.

The blockquote you attributed to him is actually a quote from Suzanne Venker, who you linked.
And I suspect she is dealing in generalities not absolutes, in the same way one might say fathers are essential to a child's upbringing.
Venker is the one who wrote to young women at Princeton (I think, one of the ivies) and told them that was where they should be looking for husbands. Boy, did she step into a hornet's nest.
Women can't have everything ALL AT ONCE. I read wise advice from a homeschooling advocate who suggested thinking about life as a set of chapters, each with a different focus.

Reposted from the last thread.
It was partially a rhetorical auestion, but one can see how such a confab can go far afield of the original charter.

I agree.
The only modern day example that I can provide on how an Article V Convention can go sideways is the history of redistricting in California. It varies with each attempt, and the outcome depends on how savvy the participants are. Politicians tend to protect what is theirs, and as in the jungle, the strong tend to dominate the weak. Of late in California, that usually means the Democrats eat the Republicans' lunch.
I like what JM Hanes suggests, that such a convention be limited to a specific Article of the Constitution. If that is the case, my preference is to use the established Amendment process. It's cumbersome and lengthy, but it narrows the focus and ultimately brings whatever is proposed down to the states for approval.
