[George] Romney was born to American parents living in the Mormon colonies in Mexico; events during the Mexican Revolution forced his family to flee back to the United States when he was a child. The family lived in several states and ended up in Salt Lake City, Utah, where they struggled during the Great Depression.

Now you guys know why I was so upset when my daughter went down to Mexico to get married without telling me.

Apparently the president of Mexico has turned President Trump down. He already got his son released from captivity by the cartels by paying some sort of ransom. I don't think he will be a very successful president.

I am perfectly fine with the US military helping Mexico weaken the drug cartels. A few well place drone strikes will go a long way to remind the cartel members that the US can kill them at a moments notice and they won't have time to prepare. Of course someone else will step in to take their place and we will just drop a drone strike on them as well. Rinse and repeat for as long as it takes and you don't have to risk the lives of US troops.

Robin

That Autonomy documentary looks good. I love to drive and would hate to relinquish it, though I do when in the car with my husband.

James D.

To show I can be at least somewhat objective (on occasion) when it comes to sports, I'll say that neither Munson nor Mattingly belong in the Hall of Fame.

Had he not died in the plane crash and played another few years at or close to the level he had demonstrated, Munson would be an obvious pick, but you can't assume it.

Mattingly was a great player, but he was only truly elite for 2-3 seasons before the back injuries really impacted him. It's just not enough to go to the Hall.

Of the other names mentioned, I think Lou Whitaker absolutely belongs in the Hall, and I don't see how it's even a close discussion. I'd say the same for Steve Garvey.

I'd say a definite no on Tommy John. If he had won 300 games, I'd feel differently, but he didn't, and he's a victim of his era. Had he put up the same numbers and especially the longevity in today's game, he'd be a lock to go in. And an even more definite no for Marvin Miller, who did tremendous damage to the game.

That leaves Dwight Evans, Dale Murphy, Ted Simmons and Dave Parker. From memory, I feel like Parker was probably the best of those four over the longest time (but I could be misremembering).

Tommy John may not be a good candidate for the HOF, although he ranks 7th in wins by a southpaw and first with 184 no decisions.

And an even more definite no for Marvin Miller, who did tremendous damage to the game.

Scumbucket who never played or managed? Fuck that shit!

I agree with Tom about Baines and I liked him as a player and person; he just isn't HOF worthy. Barely Hall of Very Good.

The baseball HOF has integrity compared to that shitshow in Canton which has multiple Harold Baineses every year. I particularly like that some years they induct nobody! Standards, how do they work?

Porchlight

John S, thank you for reading the NYT piece so we didn't have to. :)

James D @ 2:12

I'm a Red Sox fan and with no doubt both Mattingly and Munson were better players than Baines. Baines had a career WAR rating of 38.7. Every single player listed in that article had a higher career WAR stat than Baines.

Don Mattingly 42.4
Thurman Munson 46.1
Dwight Evans 67.1
Dale Murphy 46.5
Dave Parker 40.1
Lou Whitaker 75.1
Tommy John 61.5
Ted Simmons 50.3

BTW I forgot to check Steve Garvey and turns out he was the only player listed in that article with a WAR (38.1) below Baines 38.7).

In other words, of all the players listed in that ESPN article, the player most comparable to Baines was Garvey and he had the worst stats of anyone listed.
