[George] Romney was born to American parents living in the Mormon colonies in Mexico; events during the Mexican Revolution forced his family to flee back to the United States when he was a child. The family lived in several states and ended up in Salt Lake City, Utah, where they struggled during the Great Depression.

Apparently the president of Mexico has turned President Trump down. He already got his son released from captivity by the cartels by paying some sort of ransom. I don't think he will be a very successful president.

I am perfectly fine with the US military helping Mexico weaken the drug cartels. A few well place drone strikes will go a long way to remind the cartel members that the US can kill them at a moments notice and they won't have time to prepare. Of course someone else will step in to take their place and we will just drop a drone strike on them as well. Rinse and repeat for as long as it takes and you don't have to risk the lives of US troops.

Posted by: Robin, eff 'em all | November 05, 2019 at 02:06 PM
To show I can be at least somewhat objective (on occasion) when it comes to sports, I'll say that neither Munson nor Mattingly belong in the Hall of Fame.
Had he not died in the plane crash and played another few years at or close to the level he had demonstrated, Munson would be an obvious pick, but you can't assume it.
Mattingly was a great player, but he was only truly elite for 2-3 seasons before the back injuries really impacted him. It's just not enough to go to the Hall.
Of the other names mentioned, I think Lou Whitaker absolutely belongs in the Hall, and I don't see how it's even a close discussion. I'd say the same for Steve Garvey.
I'd say a definite no on Tommy John. If he had won 300 games, I'd feel differently, but he didn't, and he's a victim of his era. Had he put up the same numbers and especially the longevity in today's game, he'd be a lock to go in. And an even more definite no for Marvin Miller, who did tremendous damage to the game.
That leaves Dwight Evans, Dale Murphy, Ted Simmons and Dave Parker. From memory, I feel like Parker was probably the best of those four over the longest time (but I could be misremembering).

I'm a Red Sox fan and with no doubt both Mattingly and Munson were better players than Baines. Baines had a career WAR rating of 38.7. Every single player listed in that article had a higher career WAR stat than Baines.
Don Mattingly 42.4
Thurman Munson 46.1
Dwight Evans 67.1
Dale Murphy 46.5
Dave Parker 40.1
Lou Whitaker 75.1
