https://nationalinterest.org/blog/buzz/chinas-df-100-missile-threat-us-navy-93166

Is China's DF-100 Missile a Threat to the U.S. Navy?

Anti-ship ballistic and cruise missiles—latter-day counterparts to cannon fired from land—replicate this dynamic from the age of close-range gunnery. What should the Navy do about it?

The one in the photo appears to be land-based so it's an area-denial weapon. Assuming that it functions as advertised.

I have to wonder about it's guidance system and the way it would be used. It's alleged speed and possible glide-path are of interest.

It seems like it would need to be fired into a general area and then acquire a target. Which suggests it is dependent on other targeting systems initially.

IOW, one wouldn't know what area to launch the missile into without other input. Either satellite or forward-based radars.

I suppose we will learn more about these weapons in the future.

Are they as scary as they sound or is there a way to defeat them?

jim nj

peter,

When I was younger I knew LI to be a Republican bastion. That changed quite some time ago if I remember correctly.

Bergen County in NJ used to be a Republican bastion. That too changed quite some time ago.

NYC Democrats moving to the suburbs changed all that.

In the mean time the older Republicans, who grew up in the area, retired out of state.

Iran May up Its Aggression As the U.S. Expands Sanctions

"

Despite the United States trying to maintain some level of commitment to allow for humanitarian trade with Iran, its broadening scope of sanctions has largely closed the window through which Tehran could easily import food and medicine.
Recent U.S. sanctions on Iran's central bank and a money laundering designation under the USA Patriot Act risk further complicating any future negotiations that might arise between the two countries.
Iran is likely to continue its defiant response to widening U.S. sanctions, and the next six weeks offer Iran several possible opportunities for conducting attacks against Saudi Arabia and other U.S. allies in the Middle East."

Yes, Iran might do something. It's always on the cusp of doing something.

But that doesn't mean that others aren't thinking about doing something to Iran.

And may already be doing it in Lebanon and Iraq.

HA!

Texas voters went to the polls on Tuesday to decide the fate of 10 constitutional amendments. The one receiving the most publicity was Proposition 4, which would ban the implementation of a statewide income tax. The official text of the proposition is: "THE CONSTITUTIONAL AMENDMENT PROHIBITING THE IMPOSITION OF AN INDIVIDUAL INCOME TAX, INCLUDING A TAX ON AN INDIVIDUALS SHARE OF PARTNERSHIP AND UNINCORPORATED ASSOCIATION INCOME."

With 89% of counties reporting across the state on Tuesday nigh (9:49pm), 77.22% of Texas voters, voted for Prop. 4.

jim nj

mike, good news, Texas remains one of seven states without an income tax.

When, if, I win the lottery I'm moving to Florida or Texas. Or both.

jim nj

Bela1,

Conrad Black calls Peggy Noonan a friend so he only took a scalpel to her instead of the more useful axe.

It was interesting to read the several articles today about fighting back and how we live in different realities.

I think Conrad Black was trying to nudge Peggy Noonan back into our reality.

jim nj

That article I posted that Iran may feel a need to do something is countered by the the reality that many countries may feel a need to counter them for their own reasons.

That Israel may feel a need to react strongly based on my above posting.

That the Sauds may, independently of Israel, feel a need to react.

That anti-Iranians in Iraq and Lebanon night feel a need to react.

That possible anti-Iranian commando forces may already be in place to oppose them.

I don't see this as a set pre-planned battle. I see it as a lot of possible pre-planned counter-attacks of opportunity, many of them deniable.

henry

My guess is Evers vetoes this.

The state Senate today voted to put a hard deadline on ending the five-county sales tax that helped build Milwaukee’s Miller Park, clearing the way for the bill to go to the guv’s desk.

August 31, our long nightmare will end.

https://www.wispolitics.com/2019/senate-approves-new-deadline-for-end-of-miller-park-sales-tax/

jim nj

Put another way, Iran has lost the initiative in Lebanon and Iraq. More pressure can be brought forth in either effort against Iran.

Iran can initiate it's own pressure in multiple arenas, but has no idea what the response might be.

henry

Almost everyone who talks about Trump voters makes that same sort of mistake -- even NeverTrumpers on the right, or maybe especially them. Maybe it wouldn't be so irritating, if we start thinking of ourselves as Trump's secret weapons.

That's a great idea. I've been going with the Taqiyya method of dropping little truths here and there to sow doubt, which is pretty much the best I can hope for around here.

Daylight Saving Time has long-term effects on health
MedicalXpress Breaking News-and-Events | November 05, 2019

The annual transition to and from daylight saving time (DST) has clinical implications that last longer than the days where clocks "fall back" or "spring forward."Over time, DST eliminates bright morning light that critically synchronizes biologic clocks, which can be associated with increased risk of heart attack and ischemic stroke, as well as other negative effects of partial sleep deprivation.

Average sleep duration shrinks by 15 to 20 minutes for adults during DST transitions, which may also increase the risk of fatal accidents.

"People think the one-hour transition is no big deal, that they can get over this in a day, but what they don't realize is their biological clock is out of sync," said Beth Ann Malow, MD, Burry chair in Cognitive Childhood Development, and professor of Neurology and Pediatrics in the Sleep Disorders Division at Vanderbilt University Medical Center.

"It's not one hour twice a year. It's a misalignment of our biologic clocks for 8 months of the year. When we talk about DST and the relationship to light, we are talking about profound impacts on the biological clock, which is a structure rooted in the brain. It impacts brain functions such as energy levels and alertness," she said.

Malow and colleagues published a JAMA Neurology commentary today recapping large epidemiological studies that advocate for ending the practice of setting clocks forward or back.

Some people may have more flexible circadian rhythms and adjust quickly while others are more sensitive. Malow, an expert on autism and sleep, said that the transition impacts some children with autism for weeks or months.

While the sleep and circadian communities believe returning to standard time may be more biologically appropriate, gaining political buy-in for a nationwide change remains a challenge. State legislation is "all over the map," with some states considering a return to standard time and others in favor of permanent DST. Tennessee has passed legislation supporting permanent DST, although such a change would require action from the US Congress.

I just finished that Encounter Books interview with Instapundit and it was really good.

Ben Weingarten: One of the things that Peter Thiel brought up at that recent National Conservative Conference, and in comments after it, is the idea that tech companies — and really all companies — have no specific allegiance to America necessarily, even if they were founded here, and even if they grew because of our capital markets and our citizens. What are the implications if we’re to think of tech companies as global citizens, transnational progressive [entities], rather than American companies?

Glenn Reynolds: Well, it’s not a good thing for America, if that’s the case. It’s funny. I just ran across something Henry Kissinger wrote over 20 years ago, where he said, we have a global transnational boom and prosperity, but most of the working class is still tied to their locality, and that’s going to be a source of conflict in the 21st century. Well, Henry Kissinger’s a pretty smart guy. And that’s sort of where we are now. It’s true. If you’re Google, it makes sense to suck up to the Chinese. If you’re Hollywood, it makes sense to suck up to the Chinese. But it’s bad for America. And the question, as we always say, is how far do we let companies go in doing things that are bad for America?

Thought-provoking.

"Impeachment Drama Is Fraught with Traps for Sane Observers"

From some of the activity on this blog, fraught with traps for insane observers too:)

Robin, Tiger Beat Pompom Girl Team Member

Jim's Atlantic link is very good:

If you look at what Americans have to say on issues such as immigration, the extent of white privilege, and the prevalence of sexual harassment, the authors argue, seven distinct clusters emerge: progressive activists, traditional liberals, passive liberals, the politically disengaged, moderates, traditional conservatives, and devoted conservatives.

According to the report, 25 percent of Americans are traditional or devoted conservatives, and their views are far outside the American mainstream. Some 8 percent of Americans are progressive activists, and their views are even less typical. By contrast, the two-thirds of Americans who don’t belong to either extreme constitute an “exhausted majority.” Their members “share a sense of fatigue with our polarized national conversation, a willingness to be flexible in their political viewpoints, and a lack of voice in the national conversation.”

Most members of the “exhausted majority,” and then some, dislike political correctness. Among the general population, a full 80 percent believe that “political correctness is a problem in our country.” Even young people are uncomfortable with it, including 74 percent ages 24 to 29, and 79 percent under age 24. On this particular issue, the woke are in a clear minority across all ages.

Youth isn’t a good proxy for support of political correctness—and it turns out race isn’t, either.

“Thought-provoking.”

The question came up here a little while back in the context of that 1980s Socratic dialog about the American journalist who comes by reliable info about enemy troop movements in wartime.

The best thing you can say about it is the common thread is a hubris. Someone does something that crosses national boundaries, and they come to think that means it’s more important than nations. But in most cases it’s simple greed.

jim nj

henry,

Yes, the UAE faction and the Saudi faction have agreed on a truce and working together in Yemen.

The UAE faction is only concerned with South Yemen. The Saudis have recognized that and they will combine their forces again under the recognized government.

It may mean another division of Yemen, but the North was always the backward part of the country as I understand it.

It could lead to a new basis for peace. Let the Houthis keep the north if they abandon Iran sponsorship.

The combined Yemen never really worked well with factional issues always in the background.

I'm not sure if the north was the real problem as all kinds of foreign actors became involved in the conflict. al-Queda among them.

Another Bob,

I found it thought-provoking in that it's another facet of the elite class warfare we find ourselves in, and it's not just us, but the UK, France, the Netherlands, Chile, Lebanon.... etc.

The big question is what is the obligation of US companies to the American principles and ideals that allowed them to grow, flourish, and expand into international markets? My daughter is researching a paper on this question regarding China, and we talk a lot about ethical obligations vs. legal.

What I got out of the "Atlantic" article is that people are tired of being told what to think. And that honest conversations are being stifled for the fear that you might say something "wrong" or awkwardly.

So the MSM and the SJW are creating a new "silent majority." People who disagree with the "conventional wisdom" but don't know how to express themselves without coming under attack.

Who needs to be "outed" and suppressed when expressing a simple opinion? Nobody, so they stay out of the public argument.

Maybe I'm taking a leap too far, but it sounds like a lot of people would like to have rational conversations and have realized that they can't because they will be revealed as "deplorables."

Robin, another aspect of that is somewhat more tangible is the degree to which US companies use the US market to subsidize their sales into other markets. Obvious example where this creates serious problems is pharmaceuticals, but it happens elsewhere too.

NYT has a problem with Sean Spicer dancing with the stars:

Watching Mr. Spicer try to wipe away some of his disgrace through dancing hurts. Yet here he is, week after week, using dance as a way to redeem his character. Giving the public the chance to laugh with him — dressed as a buffoon in that scary green ruffled shirt, dancing to “Spice Up Your Life” — and not at him comes off as a calculation, on his (and probably the show’s) part. And Mr. Spicer’s later performances have been scary in a different way, like his militaristic Paso Doble, which had a cold brutality to it.

This is true, and is something I have noticed. People also love Trump enough to do their own investigations of Spygate, to quit watching certain TV shows because they were pushing an anti-Trump line, to form pro-Trump clubs, etc. etc.

People feel a real connection to the guy, because of the tweets, the rallies, and his almost daily press availabilities. It doesn't hurt that he's kept all of his campaign promises, either.

The Infamous Ignatz

Insurrections, revolutions and civil wars are almost always instigated by those on the margins.
Every situation is unique but the critical mass needed is usually smaller than most realize and the deviance from the norm that makes conditions ripe for such an event, likewise.

And my perspective is that the mass silent majority in the middle so often portrayed as the reasonable, rational victims of the strident ideologues are in fact the intellectually lazy and disinterested idiots who are too sloth-like to get out of their Lazyboys when it is still possible and put the small minority of provocateurs back in their little burrows. Far from being victims, they're cowardly enablers and fence straddlers waiting to see which side to jump to, who leave stopping the nutjobs to the few sane people dedicated enough to put up an intellectual fight. It is not, during the period it can be stopped, a physical fight. It's a battle of acceptable ideas for hearts and minds. That mass middle is too busy averting their eyes and brains to be of any use in that battle and then bemoan their fate when the storm has stopped gathering and breaks all over their backyard BBQs and hours spent watching the Batchelor.

1. Ciaramella's name has been tweeted out by Trump supporters repeatedly in the past month. But now, for the first time, the president's eldest son has tweeted out an article with his name.

Ciaramella, according to 3 sources, is indeed the whistleblower

Donald Trump Jr. @DonaldJTrumpJr
Because of course he did!!!
Alleged ‘Whistleblower’ Eric Ciaramella Worked Closely with Anti-Trump Dossier Hoaxer breitbart.com/politics/2019/…

(This has got to be bait for someone to do something like a truly futile gesture.)

Sessions’ speech, titled “The Real Meaning of the Trump Agenda...”

Is Jeff Sessions helping Team Trump prep the battlefield? He has been extremely lowkey ever since he left the DOJ and has yet to say anything negative about Trump. Since Sessions was responsible for successfully enforcing much of the Trump agenda I would enjoy reading a transcript or watching a video of his speech (assuming he got to finish it).

Give me a heart if you miss Barack Obama in the
White House.
I replied with a pic of an entirely different organ. (No, not that.)

Couple of things I have been wanting to comment but am catching up for first time in weeks. (I still had to skip several groups overnight posts and the last few pages of some of the threads). I’ve not seen this so here I go:

The Dems and MSM seem to be admitting that the Biden is “dirty” and involved in Ukraine meddling in the 2016 election. How else to explain that asking Ukraine to dig into Ukrainian activity in the 2016 US elections is “digging up dirt on a political opponent”?

…Another comment: As Mulvaney said, all “foreign aid is provided on a quid pro quo – we do this all the time”… and that is quite acceptable when Dems do in. FOR EXAMPLE: (sorry GUS) BIDEN explicitly told Ukraine that you do "this" (fire guy investigating Hunter’s company) or you don’t get "that" (money). They fired him and got the money. This is EXACTLY the way Mulvaney says foreign policy works.
