No question, CH.

Like every prog scheme, it serves multiple purposes and creates a vicious cycle:

More power in the hands of progressive politicians
Graft for politically connected prog allies
Jobs for politically correct bootlickers
All paid for by the productive, tax paying deplorables in flyover country, who get ever more burdensome rules and regulations slapped on them so they’ll know their place.

“Many of these loans are not paying tuition. They covered living expensesL

Another dirty little secret.

Wife worked in admissions/financial aid at a med school a while back. Truly amazing amounts of “student loan” money went to buying BMWs.

Melinda

CH-

Plus “Grants” approved by friends in coveted Govt positions.

That’s the tricky one. Each agency has a pile of money for “Grants”, some for actual science, and some for the political skim. Competition, plus skim for donations, adds the thumb rest to grant committee scale design.

And here we are, where every movement of taxpayer $$ is designed for skim, first.

MissMarple2

A late good morning! I am finally caught up.

Lots to think about in the college loan discussion. Maybe letting the market decide would be the best; making the trades and other work without a degree more profitable and attractive, reducing the numbers of college applicants, so that colleges would have to compete price-wise. Let THEM suffer through some budget-cutting and lay-offs.

Then allow restructuring of the debt as anonamom suggested. I don't know how you would do it, as I am not good with that type of thing, and until we get Maxine Waters away as head of the House Committee that oversees financial matters like the stock exchange, I doubt we could get anything productive going.

Still, it's a problem that needs to be tackled, and I think some good points were made in the discussion last night and this morning.

From Ace’s this morning...

In case you are having a rough day, here's a stress management technique recommended in all the latest psychological journals.

The funny thing is that it really does work and will make you smile !

1. Picture yourself lying on your belly on a warm rock that hangs out over a crystal clear stream.

2. Picture yourself with both your hands dangling in the cool running water.

3. Birds are sweetly singing in the cool mountain air.

4. No one knows your secret place.

5. You are in total seclusion from that hectic place called the world.

6. The soothing sound of a gentle waterfall fills the air with a cascade of serenity.

7. The water is so clear that you can make out the face of the liberal Democrat Congress person you are holding underwater.

JamesD: that’s precisely how red flag laws are intended to work.

Yes, at first only Professionals can report that you are an irresponsible person owning guns. LEO, doctors, mental health. Then family, friends, neighbors and co-workers will be gradually added to the list. In the end game, a Dem Party activist in another town who's never met you will be allowed to "red flag" you.

Clearly, this is the latest citizen disarmament ploy.

There is no room for more Ph.Ds in really almost any field--in English, there's a tremendous glut. It's a crime we keep taking more students into grad programs. UNL is the flagship research university in Nebraska and the only Ph.D granting institution in English in the state, so that's our excuse. But really we should cut dramatically and teach more (we all have a 2-2).

Add to this the crap education most kids get in high schools, so that many graduate with few or no marketable skills, and feel compelled to continue their education.

50 years ago, nearly every school system had vocational education programs and some even had separate high schools for the programs.

As a consequence, there was a training ground for tradesman.

As these became passe and disappeared, so did the young guys who knew how to swing a hammer or fire up an arc welder.

We are beginning to see a resurgence of this type training, but most of the focus is on inner city kids.

Nothing wrong with that, except most of these kids don't have the life skills to become someone's reliable employee.

So here we are.

Jack is Back!

MM @ 10:59. I thought that photo of supposedly Ciamarella has already been debunked as not him?

henry

Ig, a couple points on Wretchard:

1. He certainly understands the mess.

2. “Individual” owning the data? You own what you can protect.

3. Microsoft using collected error and bug reports as a signaling system? Yes, a herd immunity approach. Still reactive, but faster.

4. GDPR or Cal Data Privacy? They drive two things: a compliance industry (NGOs plus accounting and law firms); and government shakedown style corruption where the big money is today.

5. The hackers have the advantage. Not an Alien vs Predator battle of equals.

6. Government incentives are to remove individual protection (encryption). The patriot act is the equivalent of gun confiscation for physical security.

7. Thus he is naive. The “individual” ownership of data will be a counterfeit as long as governments want to spy on citizens. (aka welcome to the ledge or something).

Note, under that scenario I am an outlaw. My firm gives separate encryption keys to each customer... and we do not retain them. That doesn’t mean the encryption isn’t fake via a back door in the database or operating system — I have no way to know. :)

Jack is Back!

Buckeye,

There are a number of large multi-national Engineering-Construction or speciality firms that require their field engineers and superintendants to be able to do the work they are resposible for. An example is PDM and CB&I, the two largest tank erectors in the US. All their field engineers get Boilermaker union cards, then learn to weld, and work the first two courses of tank wall.

At my old firm it was an unwritten rule that if you are for example a field engineer for piping then you learn to do critical welding. Same for other disciplines. On my first job I learned TIG and MIG welding off hours. On Nukes, the guys who do the critical ChromeMoly welds make more than the project super.

Symantec (virus scanning etc) was until this summer 51% owned by Huawei. In theory, the corporate security product lines were sold to Broadcom (Singapore)this summer... not sure if the deal closed.

The guys who weld 2 1/2” wall Chromoly nuclear class one piping are as good under pressure as open heart and neurosurgeons. Steadiest of hands and concentration. First the pipe is heat treated to control the stress. If they screw up and the intermittent or final X-ray shows a fault, in can take days to grind that weld out and start all over. "Vocational" programs became "Career and Technical Education" programs. Vocational became linked to special needs students in the 70s and 80s. The money would follow a special needs student so the vocational schools would load up on them to get more money. A downward spiral ensued.

The money is distributed differently now but the stigma remained, so they changed the name. There is a push among some CTE instructors to go back to using vocational.

I read here that vocational schools disappeared...not where I am. I am in my 27th year at a Career Tech school that has always offered courses such asAuto Tech, Auto Collision, Welding, Health Science, Carpentry, Art Design, Graphics, Culinary Arts, Law Enforcement, Fire Services, Ag, Mechatronics and other courses.

Check out ACTE or SkillsUSA if you want to see what CTE students and educators are doing. There are many other student organizations.
