I saw that MT may pick up one of CA lost seats. And IL may lose one to either IN or WI.

I suspect NY will lose a seat. Rochester radio personality (DrJ may remember him) had something to say about that.

Upstate New York is a crown colony, without representation or voice, and wholly subject to the dictates of a hostile foreign master. In 1776, New Yorkers had George the Third; in 2020, we have Cuomo the Second.

The key to Obama's nomination was the undemocratic Iowa primaries where students and the unemployed can pack the caucuses and keep them going all night while real people have to leave at a reasonable hour. Hillary never saw that coming IMO.

sbw, thanks for that Himmelfarb essay on Bloomsbury--long but really wonderful; it confirms in detail what I always teach (for that fin de siecle seminar, I gave them Lytton Strachey on General Gordon--pure snark--and the first volume of Woolf's diaries towards the end of the course). Woolf was indeed a snob!

Good Morning. I'm in search of a new phone. My Iphone 7 (or 6 I don't recall) sucks at this point. My plan is up north with AT&T. Can I buy a phone anywhere and get it hooked up? (It's my lawfirm plan). Anyone know where the best deals are? Anyone have a phone they love?

Buttgag is being pushed as the dope de jure because Bernie is climbing again in the pols and there's nothing the Dem mandarins hate more than an open communist when closeted ones work so much better.

JM Hanes

I doubt the Dems will try to insert Hillary at the convention. Aside from her liabilities as a campaigner, I'm sure they know she's vulnerable on the Russian collusion and national security issues.

If the super-delegates go for anyone obvious, I think it would be Michelle Obama, whose popularity has always, steadily exceeded both Hillary's and her husband's numbers. She may not want the job, per se, but she loves the perks and she could leave most of the hard work and decision making to ValJar. She might be considerably harder to beat than Hillary. She's certainly got better instincts as a politician. Perhaps that's why we're gradually hearing more about Obama's involvement in the whole spying/collusion travesty.

Narciso

True but there isnt much policy difference with mayor howdy except sanders belongs in a burl ives piece

RIP Don Larsen. He was my best friend's uncle when I was a kid. Loud, rowdy and a lot of fun to be around. I took my first sip of hard liquor (moonshine) when he and his family visited my friend's folks. He got it from a state trooper friend in NC and was warning us off the evils of alcohol as he popped open another beer. Got to meet a lot of the Yankees that way.

The Left has once again really stepped in it. They are going nuts over Trumps tweet regarding his Iraq response. He is lodged firmly in their skulls.

Obama and Clinton refused 12 requests for reinforcements before 9-11-12 and then hung our ambassador and our people out to dry.

They then engaged in a massive ongoing coverup, blaming an obscure video. Why? Because they were in the middle of an election.

But somehow Trump's 144 letter tweet is dividing the country and politicizing our national policies.

Narciso

Right off the icons screen.

Jane

Oh to find out about my phone? It's a 6s plus. How rude!

Ignatz Ratzkiwatzki

I thought this tidbit from Linda Ronstadt's brainstorming session with Anderson Cooper that I won't waste anyone's time relinking was kind of hilarious;

RONSTADT: Well, now I have to be careful because we've had so much taken away from us by this administration that I'm not willing to let him take my family relationships. My family -- the part that are Republican -- are fairly rational Republicans. We don't have that in our current White House.

Yes you see Anderson I have to be careful, circumspect and temperate in my speech because I don't want to sound unreasonable and...TRUMP IS LITERALLY HITLER!

Jane,

If you're happy with AT&T you can probably get a free upgrade of your phone but I live in a black hole of coverage so a couple years ago I switched to Straight Talk at Walmart for less than half the cost and have great coverage. You'll have to buy your phone though, and make sure it's compatible with upcoming network changes.

JM Hanes

Hi Old Lurker!

Did you enjoy The Impeachment follies? Or did you cold turkey the news completely? The latter is what I've had to do on my sabbaticals, save for the occasional lurk at JOM. In any case, we've missed you!

As for nobody facing any consequences, I saw a list a week or so ago, of all the people on the intel side who are now gone, and it was surprisingly long. I can't remember where I read it, but it was in the context of Congressional Republicans being able to compel testimony from executive branch "witnesses," in ways they could not do with private citizens -- so whether the departures are good or bad for Team Trump is somewhat moot-able. That's not the same as convictions & jail time, of course. It would be nice to think that Durham is nailing down bigger names and indictable crimes, but since we're still out #twoweeks on that, there's no reason not to keep the bar well stocked out on the Ledge.

Tom R

I would not call it "a small group", and I would also start 'splainin why the promise of his last campaign that "she'd be in jail..." never happened for her or anybody beneath or associated with her or any Dem at any level in any agency or branch of government including Congress and the Courts anywhere even by 2020.

I think the most likely reason is because at the time Trump made that comment about Hillary he wasn't aware that the Obama criminal cabal was spying on him. He didn't become aware of that until after the election. He also had a coup attempt he had to deal with.

Now that Mueller and Horowitz have confirmed 1) the Democrats were lying when they accused Trump of colluding with the Russians and 2) the Obama administration did indeed spy on the Trump campaign, two important preconditions on the critical path have been met for the perpetrators to get indicted.

Had Trump gone after Hillary or the Obama criminal cabal before those two preconditions were met I doubt anyone would have gotten convicted. Trump's approval rating and chances of getting re-elected would likely lower too.

Captain Hate

My family -- the part that are Republican -- are fairly rational Republicans. We don't have that in our current White House.

Old Lurker

"gone" ain't justice in my book, JMH.

"Gone" was understood by the Vikings and the Khans...

Roaches are "gone" when you turn on the kitchen light but as soon as the Dems come back, so will they. How many millions did Jamie Gore make when she was "gone" under Bush?

Don't you love mixed metaphors?

OL:

I have no illusions about being able to talk you down off the ledge. :-)

I don't think we'll ever see Hillary or Obama indicted, but I think a lot of people close to them could be. I care a lot more about them being exposed and humiliated than I do about jail time. I just want them to go down in history as the miscreants they are. So, for now, till we hear from Durham, I'll give you a wave as I water-ski under the ledge off the dock at Beast's place.

Ignatz Ratzkiwatzki

Not sure why humans believe repeating the some argument improves its chances of persuasion but I'm not immune so...
...Let's say there is a system that has been corrupted. Let's say there are two methods by which it might be fixed. An internal one in which defective parts are removed and the system thereby repaired and an external one of going back to the original system defaults that is more difficult and time consuming but is the only option when the system is so corrupted that internal fixes no longer work.
There's nothing wrong with attempting internal fixes even if it's apparent the files are so corrupted they might never be cleaned up or the defectives ones removed and destroyed. You might get lucky and it's very satisfying to root out the corrupted files. But if the whole thing is so corrupted that new corrupted files replace the old ones it's not too likely you're gonna get lucky that direction.

So it doesn't make a whole lot of sense to rely on that one and insist it be done and done just so or all is lost when the more difficult but necessary and ultimately only successful external method of changing the system back to its default settings is available.

The guys I consult for gave me an iPhone SE so they can pick up all my International calling charges via direct bill to them.

The performance is about the same as your iPhone6s+.

The SE I have is blazing fast, and I suspect because I haven't added any apps that are running in the background and chewing up CPU time.

You could experiment by removing apps one at a time and see if you can figure out which one(s) are causing your poor performance.

Of course a new iPhone 11 is about 6 times faster than your current phone, so it will solve the problem:)

Bravo!!!

Sessions/Barr have done such a good job of eliminating leaks out of the DOJ that we have no idea what all is actually being done to fix the corruption. The crackdown on global money laundering and cutting off the flow of money to the Swamp appears to be the most important part of the solution.

Cap'n "I'm glad Iggy has the patience, which I lack, to compose that."

Cap'n, what you and Iggy both never seem to understand (even though you have very different styles and will be shocked to hear me say that) is that you both do EXACTLY the same thing I do but from your personal points of view. I am assuming you were both referring to my POV and not that of JMH's waiting for the new next great report coming in #twoweeks.

Without the opposing POV expressed by the four or five of us here on the Ledge, JOM would be simply a chorus singing praises for Trump the saviour in whatever dimension and over whatever time frame you want...since more than a few do not want to play smash mouth with you.

And Iggy, I do not attempt to "persuade" you of anything. I appreciate what you think and just wish to remind you both that not everybody thinks the same thing or is as complacent as you might be.

Not that there is anything wrong with that.

Buckeye

I care a lot more about them being exposed and humiliated than I do about jail time.

I'd say what I'd like to see happen, but I don't want the Secret Service banging on my door.

Obama was forced on the Dem party. Hillary didn’t get the memo. In 2003 Orin Hatch proposed changing the eligibility clause in The Constitution so naturalized citizens like Arnold could one day run the country. In the subsequent hearing they tried to establish what the founders meant by “Natural Born Citizen.” Obama’s fellow Illinoisan, Dick Durban, presented the a scenario to the expert witness where a child was born overseas to a foreign parent and a US parent. The panel agreed that that would be troublesome. IMO, that is when they started reconstructing Obama’s birth narrative. Obama promoted himself as Kenyan born for the purposes of book sales and ego boosting himself into the lifestyles of the exotic and would be famous. Durban and his fellow Chicago mobsters probably thought it was true, so they set about damage control from 2003 on.

Captain:

I'm not sure what Ignatz is, in fact, suggesting, but then I think analogies are rarely a close enough fit to be truly useful.

I will say that I don't think waiting to see what Durham does is repeating a fruitless tack, because I never expected more than "mistakes were made" from the Inspector General. In that respect, Horowitz actually exceeded my expectations. OTOH, I think this is ground we've pretty much covered a gazillion times, and it seems pretty clear where everyone stands wrt what they believe should happen and what will or won't actually come to pass. Perhaps that's what Ignatz means by repeating the same argument, unpersuasively.

A federal judge has temporarily blocked a new California labor law from impacting more than 70,000 independent truckers. The law, passed late last year, makes it harder for companies to classify workers as independent contractors instead of employees, who are entitled to minimum wage and benefits such as workers compensation.

U.S. District Judge Roger Benitez of San Diego on Tuesday granted a temporary restraining order sought by the California Trucking Association while he considers imposing a permanent injunction.

He said the association is likely to eventually prevail on its argument that the state law violates federal law. He also ruled the truckers would otherwise be likely to suffer irreparable harm, and that temporarily blocking the law from applying to truckers is in the public interest.

How does that work? Part of your condo fee? They provide free (or charge a token fee like a dollar) upgrades after not that long a time; like a year and a half when I still used them.

JM Hanes

henry:

I have really mixed feelings when it comes to how the California law would impact truckers, because at least some trucking companies have a real racket going on which exploits the folks at the bottom of the trucker totem pole. They will high a new employee on a "trial" basis for six months, after which they fire the guy and hire someone else on trial basis. I don't know how widespread this practice is; or if it it confined to certain areas or business sizes. Perhaps as the labor market tightens up, companies won't have enough replacements in line to continue the practice, but the folks who get hit are the ones who wouldn't know where to look for decent legal advice, even if they could afford it.

Captain Hate

He said the association is likely to eventually prevail on its argument that the state law violates federal law. He also ruled the truckers would otherwise be likely to suffer irreparable harm, and that temporarily blocking the law from applying to truckers is in the public interest.

He needs to void the whole damn law, which those dimwits did to fight Uber, rather than carve out some special exceptions. Those black robed tyrants were quick to declare a pocket veto unconstitutional and then turn around and do the same fucking thing, only not by an elected official. To hell with this.

#Tumblegeddon

A little back story: per Graham Hancock, the Columbia Basin was scoured by many cubic miles of instantly melted ice about 12 Millenia ago. Down in the corner of the Columbia River where it turns west that left things pretty flat. One ridge left over is like a mesa with its SW edge tipped down flush with the surrounding terrain. Back in the 50s, there was a weather station on that ridge that was blown flat from a wind storm. That last reading before it died was 120.

Flash forward to this week and we had strong westerlies that if they came up the Columbia, there would have been a pretty fierce wind accelerated up the backside of that ridge. It would have harvested those tumbleweeds and dumped them along that particular road like a blizzard^2.

A couple years ago there was a similar event out east of Pueblo CO that just on open countryside scoured miles of tumbleweeds and clogged roads and raised havoc at the RR test track.
