The much-heralded Inspector General report on the FBI investigation of the Trump campaign is out, and the victory lap lane is crowded.
Libs are cheering the finding that the investigation was not politically motivated. Over on the right, the talking point is the FISA warrant process was roughly as phony and dishonest as we thought. Here is Tobias Hoonhout of National Review:
DOJ IG Report Finds Russia Probe Wasn’t Politically Motivated But Suffered from ‘Serious Performance Failures’
...
The investigation did, however, identify “at least 17 significant errors or omissions in the Carter Page FISA applications and many errors in the Woods Procedures” which dictate the relevant information that must be shared with the FISA court when the FBI applies for a surveillance warrant.
“These errors and omissions resulted from case agents providing wrong or incomplete information to the National Security Division’s Office of Intelligence and facing to flag important issues for discussion,” Horowitz said.
The report confirms that the FBI relied heavily on information gathered by former British spy Christopher Steele in its FISA application to surveil Page, but neglected to inform the court that Steele gathered the intelligence while working for the research firm Fusion GPS, which had been contracted by the Clinton campaign to produce opposition research on Trump.
In addition to concealing the partisan nature of Steele’s findings, the FBI also failed to independently corroborate the information included in his dossier, which had largely been sourced from Russian nationals who Steele had never met with personally.
Democrats have long-sought to downplay the importance of the unverified Steele dossier in the face of Republican criticism of the investigation’s origins by suggesting that the intelligence was just one minor piece in a broader case that justified surveillance of Page, but Horowitz undercut this claim, writing in the report that the dossier “played a central and essential role in the FBI’s and Department’s decision” to apply for the warrant in the first place.
The FBI also omitted from the warrant application, and the three subsequent renewal applications, certain potentially exculpatory information, including Page’s denial that anyone associated with the Trump campaign was conspiring with Russia through WikiLeaks or any other channel, and his claim that he had “literally never met” campaign chairman Paul Manafort — a denial that, if shared with the court, would have disrupted the prevailing theory that Manafort was the middleman between Page and Russia. The bureau also neglected to inform the court that Page was serving as a source for a separate intelligence agency at the time.
But sure, those accumulated errors had no political agenda behind them. Grr.
I hope there is no birther talk on this thread.

Following the Saudi shooting comes THIS! Two ex Twitter employees have been charged for being spies for a foreign govt. They are accused of taking tens of thousands of dollars from Saudi Arabia as payment for the private info of users. One has fled abroad!
====================================
This is based on the WSJ story which I cannot read due to the paywall, so I am not certain this interpretation is correct.
Maybe we could hear from the FBI's Counterintelligence group, if they aren't too busy manufacturing dirt on President Trump.

What is the correct way to interpret the following excerpt?
Our role in this review was not to second-guess discretionary judgments by Department personnel about whether to open an investigation
Leftwingers will spin that as "IG confirms no political bias in FBI's decision to spy on Trump campaign.
Seems to me Horowitz is saying upfront the role of the IG is not to determine whether political bias was involved in the FBI's decision to spy on the Trump campaign.

BTW one key point from the executive summary is that Horowitz was not able to interview Glenn Simpson since he was not a DOJ employee. He is however fair game for Durham and I imagine will be the linchpin for connecting a lot of the loose ends.
Posted by: Tom R | December 09, 2019 at 03:14 PM
Dems, unable to find an impeachment crime, look beyond facts and law to interpret "intent" by reading Trump’s mind.
DOJ IG Horowitz found agents and their FBI/DOJ bosses signed off on information that should never have been in FISA submissions but declined to ascertain "intent".
Horowitz pulled "intent" from Comey’s Get-Out-Of-Jail-Free card. Comey had concluded that, ignoring the actual law, Hillary Clinton lacked intent spraying her classified emails onto the Internet.
If intent is not required revealing classified emails, is finding intent required before charging so many actions used to mislead the FISA court?
And if so many highly experienced FBI/DOJ officials lacked training to understand laws even pajama-clad bloggers know, how could they have reached such high office so profoundly ignorant?
And why are they, and the IG, still employed?

The FBI lying to FISA Court isn't a crime.
But, if you lie to the FBI after they lie to FISA Court to spy on you, it's a crime.

While we did not find documentary or testimonial evidence of intentional misconduct on the part of the case agents who assisted OI in preparing the applications, or the agents and supervisors who performed the Woods Procedures, we also did not receive satisfactory explanations for the errors or problems we identified. In most instances, the agents and supervisors told us that they either did not know or recall why the information was not shared with OI, that the failure to do so may have been an oversight, that they did not recognize at the time the relevance of the information to the FISA application, or that they did not believe the missing information to be significant.
In other words, Horowitz believed the DOJ/FBI personnel he interviewed were full of shit but he could not prove it because there were no document records of the conspiracy. The DOJ/FBI personnel he interviewed claimed ignorance of the rules to defend their actions.
Posted by: Tom R | December 09, 2019 at 03:30 PM
What if, Durham asked Horowitz to edit the report so as not to give away certain clues of the coup? It was supposed to come out in May, then September, then now. Lots of time to scrub and sanatize so Durham and his crew can continue to investigate unimpeded.
Just a theory about the delay.

I guess losing their jobs was deemed acceptable punishment for their treason.
OL: was totally correct as was Tom Collins Henry AB , Jimmyk and others.
Disappointing today, but not game changing.
Closer to the actual election, Durham’s report will pack a better punch.
Bidens being investigated is a good thing.
Notice that Biden ,Kerry and the traitors who employed illegal FISA tactics, either didn’t know about it or forgot it.
Does not recall as a get out of jail free card was first used by the Clintons with great success.
Ergo :all Dems employ it now to get away with crimes.

That is a perfect example of the difference between an IG investigation and a criminal investigation. The IG can't prove the DOJ/FBI personnel who feigned ignorance are telling the truth. Durham however can present the facts to a jury and they have the choice to believe if the DOJ/FBI personnel acted out of malice or ignorance.

--Horowitz identifies 17 mistakes that were made in the FISA applications...--
And because there was no political bias it was mere coincidence that every single one of those 17 mistakes worked to Trump's disadvantage.
I see a profitable future for Horowitz in adjustments to historical climate records.
Posted by: Ignatz Ratzkiwatzki | December 09, 2019 at 04:05 PM
Horowitz says he "didn't find" any evidence of political bias or motivation. That is not a conclusion that there was none. Since Barr and Durham have a wider scope, they could find political motivation, and that would not contradict Horowitz. And the "problems" found by Horowitz could be used as evidence.

He used to say he didn't know if it was adequately predicated. Now he says he knows it wasn't.

Statement by Attorney General William P. Barr on the Inspector General's Report of the Review of Four FISA Applications and Other Aspects of the FBI’s Crossfire Hurricane Investigation

Mom,
I'm watching. Our lawyer is doing fine, pretty disgusted with things. The entire hearing is about the dem lawyer cherrypicking evidence - as are the democrats and ignoring all the real evidence which has not been released by Schiff - who was too scared to show up. It's a really amazing abuse of power. Worse I've ever seen.

In the rush to obtain and maintain FISA surveillance of Trump campaign associates, FBI officials misled the FISA court, omitted critical exculpatory facts from their filings, and suppressed or ignored information negating the reliability of their principal source.
That's the biggest takeaway from today. 100% confirmation that the Obama administration spied on the Trump campaign.

Yes, henry, so many scummy people pretending to be public servants . . .

Today on Twitter I saw a tweet by RG (RattlerGator) that there was one judge on the FISA court who KNEW what the deal was with the FBI/DOJ and acquiesced with the disinformation, lies, etc.
I did not see that and do not know what that was about, or who the judge would have been.

We have heard Barr state specifically that the IG report is hogwash. He is Horowitz's boss. from the beginning Horowitz was confined to FBI conduct.
Durham was hired in May. He announced a criminal investigation in October. The trail to Steele is now clearly laid out. Durham is looking into Ukraine from some reports; and surely has looked into the root causes of the FBI's investigation.
So 8 weeks ago he served notice that he thought there were criminal acts involved. He and Barr were unequivocal today. More is coming, and now the same people hallelieuing the IG report are are even shakier ground.
There were no exonerations, and no comment whatsoever on the firings of McCabe, Ohr (?), Strozk, or Page.
