What about popcorn lung which is caused by the chemical diacetyl found in many vaping juices.

Dunno, Tom. You state that with a bit more certainty than even the article you link says it.

OK, but can vaping cause popcorn lung? Apparently, yes. According to that 2016 report published in Environmental Health Perspectives mentioned earlier, diacetyl is quite common in vaping juices.

So it's a concern because many e-cigarettes contain diacetyl, but no actual link has been established. It could be that the quantity is too small to matter, for example. If I were vaping I would avoid those that have diacetyl just to be safe.

Correction, Tom R just said the same thing that the article says, but the article doesn't establish a link between vaping and popcorn lung.

Whether to call witnesses and which ones is in the discretion of a majority of the Senate. So if the Dems vote as a bloc and 4 Republicans join them they can call whoever they want and keep out whoever they want. I think the ability of the Dems to draw four Republican votes will be on a case by case basis.

Yes, a good review of the “conflict of interest” issue. As the article indicates, this is not a cut and dried issue, but rather murky.

It does not appear that Flynn got railroaded into making a guilty plea. But it does appear that new counsel has convinced him that he has a shot to undo the guilty plea and perhaps walk free. Of course there are risks with that strategy.

I assume everyone has seen the gag-inducing media clip of Pelosi trooping the articles of impeachment to the Senate. Twenty years ago I used to watch Chris Matthews' show. Then he wrote a book called something like, "And now I'll tell you what I really think," and found he couldn't shut up about it once he got started. Today he was awestruck by the "sacramental" quality of the moment, and especially impressed by Pelosi's claim the Trump was "impeached for life."

How can anybody listen to Pelosi's garbled messages and hand waving turns at the podium and not see her as a national embarrassment? This may actually be the closest we have yet come to an emperor's-new-clothes moment.

I read Ignatz' excellent comment about ideology and how it works, yet it is still almost impossible to believe it when you see the chasm between believers and reality. I also find it hard to believe that I'm walking around in an ideological bubble of my own, although it seems absurd to suggest that such bubbles are exclusive to the left. They certainly seem more susceptible though.

I'm trying to think of what right wing ideology is really supposed to look like. I've never understood why white nationalists, for example, are said to be right wingers. The way the term is used doesn't seem to rely on any particular set of common attributes in the way that leftist ideologies do.

On a related note, Flynn never fully paid Covington for their legal services. In total they billed him $5 million and according to Covington records he still owes them $4.6 million. An online legal defense fund was setup by Flynn's brother and sister shortly after he was indicted and long before Sidney Powell took the case. I don't know how those legal defense funds operate but shouldn't the donations people made prior to when Powell took over get applied to what Flynn owes Covington?

No idea how much money was donated but based on the article you linked I wonder if the reason Flynn never paid Covington was because they screwed him over with how they handled the FARA documentation?

JM Hanes

Jim, Sunny,

If you're ever going to take a stand, 2nd Amendment seems to be the place to do it. You can slink away, but your guns are not the last thing they're going to try to take away from you, you just won't have any way to defend yourself when they come to take the rest. That said you can live a lot of generations even if disarmed, so I guess it's a question of how much control you're willing to cede to people who have done nothing to prove worthy of it. Usually it's the people who control the only remaining guns who do the decision making.

I know what I hope I would/will do, but you never know till you're tested. A lot folks were surely asking themselves that very sort of question back in 1776. I'm not sure the answers get much easier, except that maybe we see what's coming and can do something about sooner, rather than later?

Flynn is probably blackmailing them over their involvement in the deep state sting.

On vaping, one thing I find interesting is that the popular conception is that it is worse than smoking cigarettes. Nothing could be further from the truth. I often have gone into a tirade on analytical methods -- mainly tandem mass spec -- to determine carcinogens in both and most people have been stunned.

The press have done a really terrible job on this.

I wish that I could find a vaping setup that works for me, but sadly I have not been able to do so.

The one thing I can safely predict about what is going on in VA right now is that when the demonstration happens, ANTIFA and other Communist thugs, paid crisis actors, etc will be there to instigate some kind of violence. If it does get ugly I hope the ANTIFA thugs get the opportunity to display how willing they are to sacrifice their life for their anti-American cause.

It does seem to me that it's the Governor who has escalated the danger level exponentially. I should think that most counter-protesters would think twice about trying to disrupt a mass of armed demonstrators. Instead, the governor's order puts law enforcement officers in a dangerous, untenable position, if they are required to disarm and/or arrest an armed -- and angry -- populace, rather than simply policing a demonstration.

I'm trying to think of what right wing ideology is really supposed to look like.--

You are correct JMH that the right/left spectrum is useless.
An international socialist [a commie] is obviously much closer to a national socialist than he is to Edmund Burke or Nick Gillespie.
The spectrum is less free to more free.
If we place more free on the right then a [weak] right wing ideology coalesces around libertarianism. In their zeal to avoid statism they veer into an ideology of irrational economic, immigration, moral and national security position that inevitable lead to the type of anarchism which inevitably leads to calls for statism to quell the chaos and we flip to a left wing ideology. I am very sympathetic to the libertarian philosophy because absent the hobgoblins of human nature it would be close to idyllic. The problem with any set of values looking for 'close to idyllic' usually produces 'close to hellacious' in the end.
I've said it before and I'll say it again, if you want the best primer on the difference between an ideology and a political philosophy read James Burnham's Suicide of the West. The difference between the idealistic, simplistic and suicidal ideology of Western progism and the practical but messy political philosophy of conservatism is the whole premise of the book.
An ideology is as I said before irrational. It despises [and denies and alters] history because history refutes everything it claims and stands for. History is reality, the utopian progs' great foe. And at the most fundamental level ideologies misunderstand and deny immutable human nature.
Both progs and libertarians suffer from the delusion that in some significant way humans are good and/or perfectable. And that is why they are both fundamentally hostile to the main thrust of Judeo-Christian thought, which holds man to be inherently corrupted, imperfect and imperfectable.
Conservatism embraces that truth and tries to construct a society not based on rigid utopian formulae that always fail but one that looks back to history to learn from past mistakes and create flexible institutions that channel man's corrupted nature toward admirable and the least destructive most productive liberty enhancing pursuits.
Conservatism does not appeal to many people because it is not rigid nor simple and it not only doesn't aspire to utopia but rejects the very idea as the road to hell. History demonstrates that which is why conservatives love it and study it as it is and ideologues disappear it and warp it to their ends.

The American Revolution was profoundly conservative in that it produced a flexible, non ideological method of never making the perfect the enemy of the good. It's messy and imperfect and ideologues have found ways around it which is why we may need 1776.2.

The French Revolution was profoundly radical and ideological in that it produced a rigid quest to eradicate history, both the good and the bad, and institute a utopian replacement that soon consumed the utopians themselves in their reign of terror and led to the rise of a sawed off monster who plunged the continent into decades of war.

Ideologues and philosophers; ye shall know them by their fruits.

For those who didn't click, the Comey thing is from the NYT.

The New York Times just published a bombshell report that's faintly reminiscent of the scoops that the Liberal paper of record used to publish during the spring and summer of 2017, when the Mueller probe was in its infancy.

Except this time, instead of the the leak focusing on alleged wrongdoing by President Trump and his inner circle, the NYT is focusing on former FBI Director James Comey, who has increasingly been taken to task by the mainstream press in recent months for his botched handling of both the Clinton investigation and the origins of the probe in Russian interference (remember that?).

It's kind of funny that this ideology discussion has come up right now since I'm dealing with that crazy chick I was previously dating.
In researching the emotional, perceptive and personal idiosyncrasies of borderline personality disorder it is really striking how similar it is to trying to comprehend the mindset and worldview of progressives.
It's also similar in how difficult it is to bridge the gap from reality to their less than real world that they cling to for dear life because they're so insecure and confused.
We're engaging in an intellectual debate. They're clinging to their very identity and existence. We think we're trying to persuade someone of a better way to solve a problem, when in actuality, to them, we're telling someone not that they are mistaken about an issue but insane.
I have long said the only thing wrong with my narcissistic personality disordered brother is he thinks there's something wrong with him. All of his pathologies and behaviors that are destructive of others and self are toddler like defense mechanisms to protect what he believes to be a profoundly defective core. But penetrating those defenses or convincing him his core is not fatally flawed is essentially impossible.
Same with a borderline. They're so damaged and so afraid of being abandoned that they abandon or sabotage every relationship because they assume they will eventually be abandoned and so by doing it preemptively it is never their fault and they never have to face that defective core or the irrational destructive defenses guarding it.
A sad, empty and profoundly miserable way to live.

DrJ

I asked simply because I have worked with people from the trades, technicians, academics and all other sorts. Mostly they have been very decent people, and don't really care about race/ethnicity/whatever.

Interesting question DrJ.

Keeping in mind there are spectrums and bell-shaped curves everywhere...

There are people of the “It’s OK to be white” flavor who aren’t saying “whites are better”, but want a “white” culture acknowledged as, for example, black and Hispanic cultures are.

Then you have the “race realists” who argue culture is upstream of politics and economics, and a subset who argue that biology is upstream of culture. These people are arguably “supremicists”, but they don’t necessarily bear any malice toward other races.

Then you have the racists.

There seem to be two main subtypes Doc. The clingy, smothering, "loud" borderlines who cannot be alone and the "quiet" internalizing, isolating types.
Mine is the latter. They're less dramatic and seem saner but they're not. The former are screaming nutjobs. The latter are higher functioning, ghosting types.
Neither type is capable of a successful relationship unless they put in a lot of hard work and therapy to learn new thought patterns. Very few are self aware enough to do it.

It is always slightly odd to read news reports of investigations into leaks. I mean, the news media KNOWS who the leaker or leakers is or are. In the case of Comey, given his history you can be sure that the New York Times knows whether he leaked or not. Maybe he used an intermediary, but that could be sniffed out pretty quick.

I understand their policy of not disclosing sources and it makes some sense but it is just weird when they report on mysteries that they know the answer to but will not tell their readers.

This types runs away herself, Maryrose. They idealize a new partner but aren't capable of attachment so when their emotional honeymoon period runs its course a switch is flipped and the formerly idealized is now devalued and the hunt begins for a new person to idealize and be disappointed by.
That happens with all borderlines but the dramatic clingers try to "hoover" the former partner back in when they feel the abandonment they caused. The ghosters isolate and have fewer partners because they avoid relationships failing by not having them very often.

Iggy,

My 95 year old mother is a textbook narcissist - and my only parent. I haven’t shared a thing about my life with her since college - because it immediately became all about her. She imparted a lot of good values - hard work, independence etc. but my childhood was living hell. When I moved to FL my #1 goal was to forgive her, which I have.

She is the reason I refused to marry and have kids because I was afraid I would treat people like she treated me - as I had no other role models. Nevertheless I’ve had a good life which is pretty damn amazing.

Yes and like your brother, at 95 she is still miserable.
