Only two of the four fence-sitting Republican Senators (Murkowski and Romney) will vote to hear witnesses, so barring a surprise the Senate trial is expected to wind down next week. Iowa caucuses Monday, Trump's State of the Union on Tuesday night, Trump's acquittal on Wednesday - who makes these schedules?

Ignatz:
My Dad came in through Algeria, too, and for quite awhile they fought without any air cover. He wrote about a place they nicknamed "Stuka Alley" where you could hear the planes approaching everyday and then the distinctive sound of bombs whistling in. It was one of the only times he talked about fear, and all he said was that if someone told you hearing that sound didn't scare the hell out of them, they were lying. I know the men on the ground were really, really glad when the U.S. planes got there!

My dad served as a radio operator on the U.S.S. Samuel Chase in the Pacific and was under frequent attack in Okinawa. He was the first one to receive the news of the Japanese surrender on VJ day and was able to announce it to the entire ship. They were scheduled to go somewhere even more dangerous before the surrender and were instead sent on "Operation Magic Carpet" bringing troops home to San Diego. I have some great B&W photos he took during the war.

It's fun to watch him sort of wondering about all over the stage, looking almost as staid as he did in the Senate, but with a guitar. He plays the drums too! In passing I also learned that "Sekulow is a member of the Board of Trustees of the Supreme Court Historical Society in Washington, DC." Things just look worse and worse for Jenn Rubin.

--He wrote about a place they nicknamed "Stuka Alley" where you could hear the planes approaching everyday and then the distinctive sound of bombs whistling in.--
Might have been a siren. Stukas were fitted with a distinctive air operated siren that is what war movies usually use any time a plane dives. But it was fitted only to the Stukas as a means of terrorizing people on the ground.
The Stuka incidentally, despite its fearsome reputation was a primitive, slow, not very nimble and easily shot down plane when faced by any modern WW2 allied fighter. It was a ground attack plane that pretty much lost functionality without German air superiority.
Kinda like the the A-10 now.
Your dad no doubt was in Algeria earlier than my pop. They didn't move the B-17s and B-24s in until the places were secure. Occasionally a German plane strayed near enough to take a long range shot at them but Stukas and air combat were not a concern for his unit, in situ.

SUPER BOWL SUNDAY
A man had 50 yard line tickets for the Super Bowl. As he sat down, he noticed that the seat next to him was empty. He asked the man on the other side of the empty seat whether anyone was sitting there. "No," the man replied, "The seat is empty." "This is incredible," said the first man. "Who in their right mind would have a seat like this for the Super Bowl, the biggest sporting event in the world and not use it?" The second man replied, "Well, actually, the seat belongs to me. I was supposed to come with my wife, but she passed away. This will be the first Super bowl we haven't been together since we got married in 1967." "Oh, I'm sorry to hear that. That's terrible. But couldn't you find someone else -- a friend or relative, or even a neighbor to take the seat?" The man shook his head. "No, they're all at the funeral." 😂

For Iggy and those whose Dads fought in Tunisia, Algeria, Sicily, Italy, I’ve just begun reading The Day of Battle: The War in Sicily and Italy, 1943–1944 by Rick Atkinson. Amazon says, "He excels at describing the furor of battle, and the Italian campaign provides him with abundant raw material.” It’s part of a trilogy that includes North Africa; maybe he would know about patches . . .

It looks like the fighting has shifted 50-70 miles to the north in the last 10 days or so. Turkish observation posts set up after the prior ceasefire have been by-passed and surrounded.
The militants don't have much room left to collapse into so I expect the fighting from their side to get a lot more vicious.
I'm thinking Turkey is serious about moving its forces into the area to grab enough territory to shelter refugees in rather than have them cross into Turkey.

I’ve just begun reading The Day of Battle: The War in Sicily and Italy, 1943–1944 by Rick Atkinson. Amazon says, "He excels at describing the furor of battle, and the Italian campaign provides him with abundant raw material.”
I started reading the first volume when the war effort began in North Africa. He did a good job of describing what a lurching behemoth Saint Delano mismanaged on getting the military up to speed, including how many unnecessary deaths happened when ships capsized through sheer ineptitude off the North African Coast. Once things happened with some semblance of order on land, I think his narrative style started bugging me. Instead of a big picture historian view I got a crazy disjointed journalist pastiche of multiple viewpoints which irritated me more than it informed me. Too bad because there was a wealth of data screaming for an effective editor.
