Robin, then your silence just lets them think all is just fine. Then one day you wake up and find people you liked just left and you have no idea why. I announce my use of Kill File to express my growing dislike of the increasing coarseness of some of our exchanges.

I blame Clarice. She lost her pistolas in her sock drawer and we used to be more careful - was it just yesterday we inserted "*" in the middle of a bad word so at least Clarice would know we knew it was a bad word? :-)

Signatures From AG, FBI Director Needed on FISA Probe of Presidential Campaign Under New Proposal

Barr was asked on Jan. 13 about a recent apology from FBI Director Christopher Wray about how the FBI handled the Page situation and what changes he wants to see to the secretive court.

“We’re considering a number of additional things,” Barr told reporters at an unrelated press conference in Washington. “Chris Wray and I have discussed a number of possibilities.

“One of the things that we’ve agreed on is that the opening of a counterintelligence investigation of a presidential campaign would be something that the director of the FBI would have to sign off on, and the attorney general would have to sign off on.”

How many signatures will it take to approve a sneaky attempt to spy on a campaign via the two-hop FISA rule?

The irony is these posters are doing to JOM exactly what the Left did to college campuses so unless you are willing to take it, it is easier to just be quiet.

How odd. It seems to me most of the posters here trying to stifle discussion and/or display intolerance of opposing opinions are those who you most likely consider your closest friends.

That's fine. Once Ballard asked me very nicely, so nicely I was embarrassed, to curb my profanity. I can do that.

I'm still not backing down from comparing the complainers here to the progs during the eight years of Gaylord, particularly the first two when they controlled evvvvvvvvrtythiiiiing, and all they did was whine. **** that. As events in Iran are proving we live in the #1 country in the world and all freedom seekers look up to us, whether in Iran, Hong Kong, North Korea or anywhere else. MissMarple2

Captain Hate,

Quite a coincidence that the Ledeen article I just posted supports your position!

Robin

I started reading those comments to the NY Times article. Clearly, I have too much time on my hands. Anyway, one guy goes on like this:

If we were living in a better society, one focused on the quality of life, where one could pursue one's interests, even if less remunerative and survive, maybe the humanities could be sustained. I work in one of those 'hot' professions as a software developer, and until recently in finance. in my years there I interest in the humanities or the social sciences to be almost nonexistent. There were many opinions, but generally ignorant. The unbalanced worlds of technology and finance have no art and at times no heart.

My grandfather was smart as a whip, but no scholar. Despite his job at Alcoa working a line, he spent all of his free time reading literature and listening to music. My mom's neighborhood was blue collar and she told us about my grandfather taking his record player out onto the porch on warm nights and playing opera and jazz for the neighbors. He collected the classics and read everything he could get his hands on. He also loaned out books all the time, not records though. ;-)

Maybe the "hot" fields folks don't value the arts enough to share it and support it because they're too busy caterwauling about climate change and the Deplorables.

Captain Hate

That Ledeen's a smart guy...

henry

Miss M, that teaser was the video O’Keefe sent to the WI AG (then a Republican) who gave it to a lifer to bury. No charges, no more than five minutes of “investigation.” The same WI AG that didn’t do squat about the John Doe raids and illegal data sharing with Dem party operatives in CA. That got a “laws were broken, but we sat on our asses for five years while audit trails disappeared.”

Thus I have zero faith in our law enforcement to do anything about tyrannical actions by entrenched civil servants. Does Barr have magical things happening behind the curtains? Or is this des ja vue all over again?

MissMarple2

Threadkiller,

I agree! I like quick thinking. SOMEBODY had the idea to tweet in Farsi, and Trump would have grasped how important it would be for Iranians to see words of encouragement in their own language.

I also like his vision of sanctions to put economic pressure on them, which keeps them from sending money to terrorist groups. Much less loss of life.

I have no idea. I would ask the governor this:

1. Does he not care about citizens being injured or killed?
2. Does he not care about his city being burned? (I remember the Watts riots.)
3. If he is concealing the evidence that this is being planned, is HE going to be liable?
4. What will insurance companies say? Corporate attorneys with damage claims?
5. What will citizens think of democrat mayors and governors if this spreads all over the country?
6. If they are going to drag rich people to a gulag, does that include Michael Bloomberg, Tom Steyer, Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton?

Extraneus

I saw a Cooper's Hawk for the first time today, close up. It swooped down to the ground between my bird feeders. No birds were there for the landing of course, but it walked around on the ground a while, then flew to the fence and stayed there a few minutes, looking around, turning its neck more than 180 degrees while eyeing everything with rapid head and eye movements. (I had the binoculars on it by then.) Then it flew off, down the hill to the river and close along the bank for a ways before jetting up and out. Quite a bird.

henry

Ext - Cooper's hawks are exquisite.

when we find their fresh remains we use leg and wing bones to make ceremonial whistles, breast bones to cover and bead as amulets, and if we're fortunate enough to find an intact wing, craft it into a prayer fan.

their claws can be steamed to relax the tendons allowing them to open and be affixed to the ends of prayer "sticks" made from manzanita and high country cedar.

Cooper's die in droves along interstate 5 with night hawks and red tails--- semi trucks. windmills on Altamont Pass take their toll too.

but, we make the most of their sacrifice: hawk medicine helps us tear the veils of our illusions like they use their eyes, claws and beak to feed, fight and survive.

seeing them alive and up close is a welcome reminder of how communion is still possible.

thank you for this unexpected inspiration. i have 3 whistles to tune.

I finally went back to the pool and my democrat friend said everything in the world depends on John Bolton. i'm pretty sure he has no idea how conservative John Bolton is. If Bolton vindicates Trump he says he will abandon all his liberal beliefs and vote for Trump. If he is prohibited from testifying it will confirm that Trump is guilty of everything.

I told him Bolton should not testify as it would undermine the power of the presidency - liberal or conservative. That just assured him that Trump is guilty.

How do we deal with people like that? He says he is a liberal but it willing to rely on perhaps the most conservative guy in DC - as long as he breaks the rules.

I give up. And I'd bet money Bolton would not testify against Trump if it was allowed.

We have Cooper's Hawks around here. The first one I saw was pinned down in a woody bush by a bunch of blue jays making a racket. I was walking Maggie at the time and we just stayed to watch how the hawk would extricate itself from being surrounded by those nest robbers. Finally it detected an opening and was off like a flash.

There was a hawk's nest in the front yard of a mansion across from the park. One of the local birders said another hawk attacked the nest leaving a motionless wing hanging over the side. I wish they'd redirect their efforts to hammering those [Redacted] squirrels which taunt Teddy. Oh for one 12 gauge and one hour.

The Infamous Ignatz

I had a Cooper's Hawk in my freezer for many years as a reference guide. Lit atop a power pole and did not quite get things right. Touched two wires and down he came.
Cooper's are accipiters which are short winged, long tailed hawks of the woodlands. Though they occasionally soar and perch they usually nab birds by slipping through the trees in a most uncanny manner and grab small birds which make up the vast majority of their prey.
As cool as they are there is nothing quite like a grey Goshawk, about twice as big, gliding silently through the firs looking for a bird to murder.
You never want a goshawk on a logging job though. If they have a nest you have to put a massive buffer zone around it.

Buckeye

We have lots of hawks where I live now. Cooper's and red-tails mostly. An occasional osprey as well.

Lots of owls too. I hear them nearly every night walking Poogan.

https://www.grubstreet.com/2020/01/bagel-mafia-wars-local-338-union.html

Rather long, but interesting article. Particularly if you're a bagel fan.

It begins:
"In 1944, on the Lower East Side of Manhattan, some enterprising thief stole a truckload of more than 1,500 bagels slated for delivery from Fisher’s Bakery on Norfolk Street. It was a newsworthy event, and local papers covered it duly — especially the primary mystery confronting policemen on the scene. At question, reported the Associated Press: “They wanted to know what a bagel was.”

Even into the modern era, the presence of bagels in America was largely confined to Jewish enclaves, predominantly in New York City, the old-world bread still sufficiently exotic that every mention of it in the New York Times (usually brief items concerning labor issues) assumed no previous knowledge on the part of readers. “A bagel,” the newspaper of record explained in 1960, “is an unsweetened doughnut with rigor mortis.”
