The Times has a somewhat surprising addition to the long list of Things About Trump That Freak Out Democrats:
Left and right agree on one point. The president’s re-election campaign is way ahead online.
Huh. I'm old enough to remember when the Democrats edge in hip, progressive techies pointed to their everlasting dominance of internet politics. Well, that was soooo 2008. And 2012. Of course, neither President Howard Dean nor Senator Ned Lamont (now Governor!) were available for comment.
I have to say, the tech is cool, in a surveillance-state sort of way:
In a blog post published in November, a year before the 2020 election, Brian Burch, the president of CatholicVote.org, a socially conservative advocacy group, announced that in Wisconsin alone his organization had identified 199,241 Catholics “who’ve been to church at least 3 times in the last 90 days.”
Nearly half of these religiously observant parishioners, Burch wrote, “91,373 mass-attending Catholics — are not even registered to vote!” CatholicVote.org is looking for potential Trump voters within this large, untapped reservoir — Republican-leaning white Catholics who could bolster Trump’s numbers in a battleground state.
Burch, whose organization opposes abortion and gay marriage, made his plans clear:
That is a lot of potential right-wing voters to target. And how were they found? Ah, well...
How did Catholic Vote come up with these particular church attendance numbers for 199,241 Catholics? With geofencing, a technology that creates a virtual geographic boundary, enabling software to trigger a response when a cellphone enters or leaves a particular area — a church, for example, or a stadium, a school or an entire town.
Geofencing is just one of the new tools of digital campaigning, a largely unregulated field of political combat in which voters have little or no idea of how they are being manipulated, in which traditional disclosure requirements are inoperative and key actors are anonymous. It is a weapon of choice. Once an area is geofenced, commercial data companies can acquire the mobile phone ID numbers of those within the boundary.
I'll be damned. But since I have been slack on church attendance, damned or not I won't be targeted.
Can trump get Mexico to pay for his geofence?
Posted by: Ignatz Ratzkiwatzki | January 29, 2020 at 05:02 PM
Could geofencing be used to calculate rally attendance, and drill the data on attendees?
If so, Parscale is on it.
This is all especially satisfying after hearing how unbelievably sophisticated Obama's digital game was, and how bad Romney's was.

OL, from the last thread:
Some do, and some at least are caught. NIH each Friday publishes its TOC, which is a summary of policy changes, requests for comments, new proposal solicitations, and the like.
One part is findings of research misconduct. Usually these are at the post doc or higher level, and usually there are one or two per week.
I've found that most I've worked with are very honest and really want to do good science. More disconcerting to me is that often publications show the one experiment that worked, and don't talk about the ten similar ones that did not. This, I think, is a large part of the difficulty in reproducing literature results.
Again, I've not found this to be the usual case, though I don't work in political areas like AGW. Biological Chemistry and Biophysics just is not that political, though of course there are scientific hot topics that people flock to.

Posted by: clarice | January 29, 2020 at 05:41 PM
I'll temper the above by saying that all the lawyers with whom I've worked have been fine people. Some are more capable than others, of course, but they really did follow the law and behaved ethically.
I'll except prosecutors, who tend to be the scum of the earth as far as ethics go.

Tom R (in re your comment on the last thread):
"If the DOJ does not do any of that then that leads to me conclude there is no Top Secret information in the manuscript."
Notwithstanding the NSC preliminary review?
I'm not letting the question lead me to any place in particular based on actions taken by the previous administration. I believe their desire to boot Petraeus, and humiliate him sufficiently to drive him from politics permanently, figured into how they handled his case in a very big way. Political considerations largely determined how Hillary's infractions were handled, too. So yes, there could certainly be political considerations in play here as well, but the range of players, and of possible conjoining or conflicting objectives is way too extensive to draw any sort of conclusions at this point. It just suggests to me that there is nothing that the DoJ has to do about it one way or another. There may be things they ought to do, but nobody's been doing much of that for awhile, now.

JMH @ 5:55
I think you are missing my point. I am saying you can determine the truth here by how the Feds act.
There are two possible options to choose from: 1) Bolton included Top Secret classified information in his manuscript or 2) Bolton did NOT include Top Secret classified information in his manuscript.
If #1 is the truth then the government by law is required to confiscate Bolton's computer. That is SOP whenever a classified spill occurs. If the Feds don't confiscate Bolton's computer then that is a clear signal #2 is almost certainly the truth. If #2 is the truth then that has 4D Chess implications.
AFAIK there have been no reports that Bolton's computer was confiscated nor report of the DOJ initiating an investigation into the security violation.

Being a lifelong GUBMINT TEAT SUCKER, does that to virtually every GUBMINT lifer employee. Some, not many, joined government "service" in the hopes of making a difference, and helping our country. VERY VERY VERY FEW. Most realized that working for government in it's many forms, PAID WELL, offered AWESOME BENNIES and offered paid retirement at a relatively young age.
Biden et al, found ways to enrich themselves their families, and a source of STATUS, and EXTREME EGO GRATIFICATION. POWER intoxicates as well. Unfortunately, the LEFT slathered these lifers with exactly what they sought. These lifers IN TURN, supported anything and everything that increased their power and their ability to SPEND our TAX PAYING regular peeps, into oblivion. Soon enough, the gubmint employees came to believe that their numbers and fellow teat suckers were in charge. HERE WE ARE.

Tom R:
It was a preliminary review. As usual you're jumping the gun. There's a difference between all you "need to know" before jumping to conclusions and what most other people think is persuasive evidence.

The Dems remind me of the great scene in Citizen Kane where Kane is running for Governor. On election night, his newspaper has two headlines prepared. One is “Kane Elected.” The other is “Fraud At Polls.”
Their peach mint headline will either be “Bolton Proves Quid Pro Quo” or “Cover Up!”
I wonder if the GOP should not let them call Bolton. His “testimony “ is already out there and it’s not that bad. The public might be more gulled by the coverup change than by any parsing of Bolton’s testimony.
Of course the Dems will have two headlines ready for November — their preferred one being “Trump Defeated!” but they will go with the alternative if needed - “Putin Hacks US Election Again!”

Glad to see that James Wood is back iin business. I'm not sure why people assumed that saying Commanders-in-Chief was a mistake, instead of an intentional plural. Like saying, "America, support your Presidents," because Congress is trying to tie not just his hands but those of all future presidents as well.
