The Infamous Ignatz

-- Seems fairly clear to me McClintock was arguing against that and claiming that thanks to the 15+ year old AUMF Trump could attack Iran without Congressional approval.--

Tom, you make some pretty good arguments at times.
This is not one of those times.

DrJ:

"I am much more interested in Chopin's hands than his face."

We're here to help:

Chopin in 1849

Objects of Intrigue: Chopin's Immortal Hands

Chopin’s body was buried in Père-Lachaise in Paris (he can now be found under a monument by Clésinger, who seemed to have given all his skills to a proper immortalization), and his heart was sent to the Church of the Holy Cross in Warsaw. His hand, however, went far. Casts of it can be found in metal and plaster in collections including the Frederick Chopin Museum in Warsaw, the Musée de la Vie Romantique in Paris, the Hunterian Museum and Art Gallery in the UK, and the Polish Museum in Rapperswil, Switzerland.

Why obsess over this hand? It wasn’t unheard of at the time to commemorate composers in this rather macabre way, and you can also find casts of the hands of Beethoven and Franz Liszt. However, by all reports Chopin’s hands were special, and an anatomical key to his success. In At the Piano with Chopin, composer Stephen Heller is cited as extolling how Chopin’s slim hands would “suddenly expand and cover a third of the keyboard. It was like the opening of the mouth of a serpent about to swallow a rabbit whole.” A student, Adolf Gutmann, also reportedly said Chopin’s “whole body was extraordinarily flexible.”

Re "all but four of the Canadians have Arabic names". I live in Glendale CA which has more people of Armenian ethnicity than any other city in the world--except for Yerevan--the largest city in Armenia. Lots of Armenian ethnics have lived in Iran.

My next door neighbor is part of a large family--including aunts, uncles cousins etc. that got out of Iran starting about the time of the fall of Shah Reza Pahlavi. My neighbor is maybe 55 now. He was 14 when the family made it to London. A couple of years later the family/clan moved to Montreal where they ran a business. Maybe after a dozen years in Canada, most of the clan moved to Los Angeles. The neighbor on the other side of this guy's house was a maintenance officer in the Shah's air force. Since it wasn't healthy to have served the Shah once the mullahs took power, that guy came to Southern California and started a helicopter engine repair business.

Today's Los Angeles Times noted that two of the people on the plane were students at Southern California colleges--but had Canadain nationality. Their mother was also on plane. She's Iranian, but works as a doctor in Canada.

I dunno. The Iranian government, and their yellow running dogs in the US main stream media, first denied the shootdown; then said it was "unintentional" and now blames "human error" and Trump.

Well the shootdown may have resulted from a mistake by a missile battery commander--but it sure as heck involved an intentional act to press the firing button.

The Indian government’s win of a long-contested dispute over telecom fees could end up a Pyrrhic victory, as the billions of dollars in levies now owed are seen as burdens too big to bear for two of the country’s three main carriers.

What is that supposed to mean? I agree with pretty much everything McClintock said is his speech, which was given in opposition to the Democrat resolution that Trump could not attack Iran without approval from Congress. If someone disagrees with the Democrat’s position doesn’t that clearly indicate they believe the exact opposite that Trump does not need Congressional approval to attack Iran?

KevlarKid

so what is "Mike" going to "get done"?

Theo

I am going to wade into this with some trepidation..........

It seems to that there are three distinct issues here:

1. What does TomR think should be the limit on presidential authority to take military action without Congressional approval?

2. What is the consensus opinion of JOM regulars on that topic?

3. What are Tom McClintock’s views on that topic?

I would like to read and would almost certainly respect TomR’s views on number 1. But I think he has wandered off topic in trying to argue that JOM and McClintock agree with him. Maybe so, but pretty irrelevant.

If the issue is whether Trump in fact had Congressional approval for his actions last week, I find that topic pretty legalistic and not all that interesting. If he did have such authority from Congress it can surely take it way from him.

lyle

It takes absolutely no trepidation to, as is my wont, SOB. Cheers! 🍷

By a law, not by a resolution. Except for some particular powers, such as the Senate approving appointments, Congress can only act by passing laws, either signed by the President, or vetoed and overridden.

To be rigorous, there's also the case where the President doesn't sign the bill within ten business days, so it becomes law, as if signed (unless Congress adjourns).

Theo @ 8:26

This all started with TK calling Gaetz a prick and stupid and me pointing out countless number of JOM posters have expressed the same exact position Gaetz took. I also posted a link to a persuasive Scott Adams tweet where he makes the compelling argument how this was actually a smart move on Gaetz part. On the position of Constitutional authority for declaring war Gaetz and McClintock are in 100% agreement.

Right now the entire argument is a nothing burger since the Democrat resolution requiring Trump to get approval from Congress before attacking Iran was a non-binding PR stunt. What happens though at some point in the future and Iran is getting close to acquiring a nuclear weapon? If Trump keeps his promise then that means he might have to attack Iran to prevent them from acquiring nuclear weapons. Can he attack Iran without new approval from Congress?

Another Bob

Disregard MJW. Article 1, Section 7.

Catsmeat

Dr. J, and whoever might know, whose hands had a bigger reach, Chopin's or Rachmoninoff's? I and my son have played (not very well) many of both their pieces, and I think Rachmoninoff asks for greater anatomical (and impossible, thus "rolling") stretch. I know a great pianist whose hands are smaller than mine (and mine aren't large) who plays Rachmoninoff with great gusto--it must all be in the fingering.

Theo

TomR —.

I am not arguing with you but just asking for clarification. Can you summarize the position that Gaetz took that you believe has been expressed by numerous people at JOM?

jimmyk

Not sure if Jane's question about getting rid of the FISA court was answered, but I believe it was established by Congress and signed into law by Carter, so I presume it would take an act of Congress to put an end to it.
