We seem to be in the late innings of the impeachment "drama". Per the NY Times:
Republicans are optimistic they will be able to wrap up President Trump’s impeachment trial without hearing from additional witnesses like the former national security adviser, John R. Bolton. But Democrats are hinting at a gambit to frustrate the Republicans’ plans, though Senator Chuck Schumer, the minority leader, has refused to tip his hand.
A gambit to stretch this out so the nation will ignore the Super Bowl, the Iowa caucuses and the New Hampshire primary. Real Men of Genius are working on this. And Women! (No word on whom Warren envisions as Not-So-Free Speech Czar but I bet it'll be a doozy.)
Murkowski also said the trial had not been fair and that Congress had failed as an institution.
"Given the partisan nature of this impeachment from the very beginning and throughout, I have come to the conclusion that there will be no fair trial in the Senate. I don't believe the continuation of this process will change anything. It is sad for me to admit that, as an institution, the Congress has failed," she said.
"It has also become clear some of my colleagues intend to further politicize this process, and drag the Supreme Court into the fray, while attacking the Chief Justice. I will not stand for nor support that effort. We have already degraded this institution for partisan political benefit, and I will not enable those who wish to pull down another.
"We are sadly at a low point of division in this country."

Mrs. Buckeye stayed in Portman’s face all week, leaving nothing to chance.
He has behaved, but not sure that means much with that two faced Chamber toadie.

Zicam throat spray DOES contain zinc--and my now retired former elementary school gym teacher cousin would spray it up his nose, everyday during cold season, and swears by it for cold prevention. YMMV.
Don't use too much, or snort!

She whiffed on Kavanaugh snd now she has to pay the piper.

Shut up Murk. The Senate so far has SUCCEEDED in not furthering a partisan impeachment by the House and not granting the House the ability to usurp the power of the Senate.

Three of the dumbest, irritating and inarticulate dunces, one of which owes his well paid deadbeat existence to the 17th amendment.

You know she wanted to say that Congress had fallen almost to Trump’s level, but had to bite her tongue.
Posted by: Buckeye | January 31, 2020 at 01:42 PM
Neo, I think that is a terrible idea.
They can pontificate about that later on at anytime the Senate is in session.
It just drags this mess out.’Vote on witnesses and then vote on the articles for acquittal and end this thing,
Repub lawyers should be ready to go,

Murkowski and Alexander both should have just announced their positions and then shut up. Or even better, just vote and say nothing. But no...they both offered gratuitous soundbites that will be useful to the other side.

You're a real trooper, Jane! You'd think I should be able to listen to Schiff by now without blowing a gasket, but jeez. Can't wait to hear what the Times has up its dirty sleeves, though. How does Schiff explain his insider scoop? Let's hope that a vision of endless NYTimes articles being paraded through the Senate well is enough to solidify the no witnesses vote.

I have the same disease, Buckeye. Drives Mrs. OL nuts. Do not ask me my policy about circuit breakers; that makes her crazy.
Which reminds me of a funny story I told here maybe ten years ago. Our property where I grew up had street lights on 8' poles dotted along the driveway and other roads on our property - maybe 40 of them all over the place. It being WV, the critters who worked for my Grandmother in the 30s who ran the wire from post to post buried it just a few inches down, well within reach of a shovel or other tool. So the wires got cut often and the lights after that point would not work.
I wasn't 5 like you were but I was not yet 10 and it was my job to find and fix all such shorts. This was before breakers so we had screw in fuses of course. Well I found it quite tedious to hike up the hill and search for a likely break, then hike back down to reinsert the fuse only to find, nope, that was not it. Repeat. Until I discovered if I bypassed the fuse (will not explain how to protect dummies who might read this) and waited five minutes, I could find the break by walking the line looking for smoke. Worked every time.
Simpler times.
Before OSHA.
Before lawyers.
When families still had lots of kids so they could lose a few dumb ones...
(I was probably 50 before I told my parents about my "trick" and they almost fainted.)
Here. Hold my beer.

Maryrose "What Alexander says doesn’t matter because he is retiring."
But an awful lot of people pay attention to what he says, so "Sure, he was guilty on Count 1 but not worth firing him for that" is a terrible message. And Murkowski will be read as "Yes, he beat the rap because we in the Senate messed up the process..." is just as poor a message.
I stand on my claim yesterday that GOPe "moderates" are more dangerous to the Republic than are flat out Progs.
Rattlesnakes are "better" because they rattle and you can shoot them, but Copperheads are sneaky and quiet but will kill you anyway.

You know how the somber voice comes on before the curtain opens for a play or a ballet "In tonight's performance, the role of X will be played by Y..."
At the SOTU, right after the SoA shouts "Madame Speaker...", that voice would say "Before the main event, we need all Senators to stand and their votes counted. After the tally is recorded, the speech will either be delivered by Donald Trump or Mike Pence."
Posted by: Old Lurker | January 31, 2020 at 02:33 PM
senators to take 10 minutes apiece
That's 1000 minutes, which is what, like 16 hours? This is so historic and solemn, I'll definitely watch every minute of that.
Posted by: hrtshpdbox | January 31, 2020 at 02:34 PM
"which is what, like 16 hours"
16.666 but in Senate Time, that can be 3-5 calendar days.
