We seem to be in the late innings of the impeachment "drama". Per the NY Times:
Republicans are optimistic they will be able to wrap up President Trump’s impeachment trial without hearing from additional witnesses like the former national security adviser, John R. Bolton. But Democrats are hinting at a gambit to frustrate the Republicans’ plans, though Senator Chuck Schumer, the minority leader, has refused to tip his hand.
A gambit to stretch this out so the nation will ignore the Super Bowl, the Iowa caucuses and the New Hampshire primary. Real Men of Genius are working on this. And Women! (No word on whom Warren envisions as Not-So-Free Speech Czar but I bet it'll be a doozy.)

Re: our conversation on the flu —
I was thinking of this type of avian flu:
The most common, low pathogenicity avian influenza, is mostly harmless and infected chickens will react with general flu/cold-like symptoms. Highly pathogenicity avian influenza is extremely contagious and kills approximately 90% of all chickens that catch the disease.

I read an old interesting ScientificAmerican article [that I don't think I linked here] that said research seems to indicate a complex deal with two different flu types; Group 1 and Group 2. The question was why the Spanish Flu whacked so many young healthy adults; average age of death was in the 20s.
They discovered a correlation between the type of flu a generation is exposed to at youth and susceptibility to one from a different group later. The strain that effected people shortly after the turn of the century was of a different group than the Spanish flu and the theory is that for some reason our immune system is then fairly helpless against the other group and if it's a particularly virulent one like 1918's, you don't have much defense.

JMH, re your 10:02 AM post: Whether or not there is another inquiry labelled "impeachment" in the House, I am sure the Jerry/Adam/Nancy outrage show will go on (with help from the usual supporting cast members such as Hakeem and Maxine). That will keep the base revved up and help distract from a pretty amazing POTUS performance on the economy. Today at Rasmussen tracking, Trump is plus one overall and minus 4 strong approve/strong disapprove. Although that is in the higher range of his numbers since he took office, it's still amazingly low given the economy.
I think the continuing Dem/Oligarch Media outrage machine tactics will help Comrade Sanders. It's his base that will be most stoked up by whatever new breathless reporting will now emanate from CNN and MessNBC. Perhaps the John Bolton book tour will provide some grist for the outrage mill.

I have absolutely no doubt that it will. The President, however, will no longer be in active legal jeopardy, which is both constraining and wearying, no matter how well Trump is handling it. I'm not the only here who has talked about being depressed or seriously out of sorts over the current goings on, either, which is part of why I mention the effect of continuing impeachment on voter morale. It's just categorically different from the familiar outrage of the day.

If you are correct that it's all kabuki, are the voters who are "enraged" at Collins also morons?
Knowing that the outcome of the impeachment is already known, my guess is Trump and McConnell are thinking ahead to Trump's second term. Much better for Trump for Collins to get re-elected than to lose that seat to the Democrats. If Trump campaigns for Collins later on this year that should settle the debate.

It has been interesting to read how many commenters had relatives who died in the 1918 influenza. My paternal grandmother died in the flu after giving birth to my aunt. My father was four years old. My grandfather married his late wife's sister, as was a custom among some European immigrants at that time. I wasn't told until I was at least a teenager that the woman I thought was my grandmother was not. And my father never talked about losing his mother at age four. Don't you love that Northern European stoicism.

Jane @ 11:03
And if my aunt had wheels she’d be a wagon.
The liberal media is not all powerful. It has seen a serious decline in prestige and importance. Conservative outlets are getting the word out.
The underlying premise of your comment is that most people are really dumb and are easily misled by what they hear and read. And that a group representing a tiny fraction of political thought has somehow gotten a near monopoly on what they hear and read.
I don’t think this withstands analysis. Outlets like the NYT and WashPost are profit making ventures. They tell their readers what their readers want to read or they would go out of business. It is simply false to imagine a tiny evil cabal of media players exerting mind control over a huge portion of the population.
It is true of course that most of the media leans left and cuts their side slack while unfairly portraying conservatives. This gives the Dems some minor advantages in close races. But they have a real constituency. Their followers are not mindless. If Rachel Maddow suddenly started reading from Sean Hannity’s scripts, very few if any of her devoted fans would become Trump supporters. They would just go elsewhere for their commentary. And a lot of conservatives would begin tuning in to Maddow.
The media is a problem but it’s only one part of it. Conservatives need to persuade real people, not just replace media overlords. When the public buys into conservative ideals and principles the media will follow.

Rather than McConnell "allowing" Collins to vote for witnesses, I think it is far more likely that McConnell had to ask Lamar to NOT vote for witnesses. And maybe convince Lisa to sleep on it too.
I think Senator Collins was going to vote that way all along. And our least favorite Republican in the world, Senator Romney as well.
That being the case, it would be who else "could" and still not have have to endure the torture of/subject the country to that no win/no difference situation.

Last October a freshman died after attending a fraternity party. The family has done yeoman's work in trying to get to the bottom of their son's death. Their lawsuit details the activities at the fraternity party, which are frankly shocking. If all true, it's amazing that more students don't wind up with alcohol poisoning.
I don't have much knowledge of fraternities. Are they supposed to have an adult living in the house and providing supervision? If so, would that person be held criminally liable for the student's death?

Mrs. Buckeye has a Samsung Tablet that she rarely uses, mostly for travel since it is light and easy to carry.
I thought I would check it before we head to PR in a week. It has been in a corner in the family room, plugged in.
Well the battery did not take kindly to the over charge, and was swollen to 4 times its normal thickness. Pushed the screen right out of the frame!
I ordered a new battery pack, watched a youtube on how to disassemble, and had at it.
Amazingly, nothing was broken. Removed the battery and was then able to reinsert the screen. Installed the new battery and snapped everything back together.
Works and looks fine.
Thought of Frederick while doing it:)

Great stuff Robin! I do hope that the English can stop their apparent slide into Islamification and politically correct paralysis in the face of such challenges to the character which has made Britain great. Brexit is really the first hopeful sign in a long, long time, it seems to me.
Is anybody watching the summations? I actually forgot them for a moment.

Lisa Murkowski to vote against additional witnesses in Trump impeachment
Her constituents have likely been reminding her that Trump’s energy policies are saving Alaska’s bacon, and we could survive without you.

Of course JMH. So far just whining by Demmings and Schiff - after bragging that the ver credible N.Y. Times has massive and damning new evidence.
Nothin new.

Zicam nasal swabs no longer have zinc in them, sadly.
(Some old people snorted zinc gel and burnt out their olfactory nerve, and ruined it for the rest of us._
So they don't work like they used too.
When my dad died, I made sure I got all of his old ones from his bathroom medicine cabinet.
