From the end of the last thread:

It really is amazing how President Trump has gotten Democrats and leftists to support things that they've been opposed to for decades, just because Orange Man Bad.

Here's the latest example:

https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/youre-a-bunch-of-dopes-and-babies-inside-trumps-stunning-tirade-against-generals/2020/01/16/d6dbb8a6-387e-11ea-bb7b-265f4554af6d_story.html

I remember how leftists hated "the generals" and demanded that Presidents not slavishly listen to them.

I remember how leftists hated free trade agreements that made big business richer but sent jobs overseas.

I remember how leftists wanted the defense budget slashed, and troops brought home from all over the world, and how our hundreds of bases across the globe were illegitimate.

I remember how leftists came to hate the war in Afghanistan and thought it was unwinnable and we shouldn't even be there in the first place.

But because Orange Man Bad, now they're in favor of having troops and CIA stations and airfields all over the world, and they love spending trillions of dollars on defense, and they want us to stay in Afghanistan forever and ever, and the generals at the Pentagon should run our foreign policy and must never, ever be questioned or criticized.

The comments to the article really bear all that out, too.

MissMarple2

I am bringing this over from the end of the last thread, too:

Another thing I figured out listening to that Bannon interview. He didn't know Donald Trump at all, never met him. David Bossie called Bannon and asked him to come to New York and meet Trump - talk to him about a presidential campaign. He went, and was dumbfounded at the man's presence. Ended up talking to him for 2 hours, including a whole bunch about China trade, which he couldn't get ANY Republican to talk about except Jeff Sessions.

Bossie then booked Trump in a couple of cattle calls. (If you guys remember, there were a large number of GOP candidates in 2016: Bush, Cruz, Paul, etc.) Bannon says he distinctly remembers the one in New Hampshire, full of party officials and donors. Bannon sat off to the side and watched the audience.

All of the candidates came with prepared speeches and talked about the same things: free trade (globalism), education, etc. Trump got up and spoke extemporaneously about renegotiating trade deals, the declining middle class, rebuilding the military, etc.

Bannon said the audience was leaning forward in their seats, interrupting with applause, gave him a standing ovation at the end. That is when he knew that Trump would get the nomination.

That is when I realized that he has these rallies because he recognizes the power of his personal presence in front of people and how much it means to them. People who stand in line in the cold for 12-24 hours, and wait outside when they can't get in and watch on big screen TV's to show loyalty, are NOT going to desert him.

MissMarple2

matt,

Agree it's a similar strategy and that they have gone way over the line. That rally on Tuesday should be a doozy!

If/when Trump's lawyers get to make an opening statement at the trial, my hope is they mention something along the lines of this.

"We are not here today because of something Trump has done wrong. We are here today because Nancy Pelosi discovered the DOJ was investigating corruption between Democrats and the former Ukrainian government that occurred while Obama was POTUS. Nancy Pelosi knows her son was one of the Democrats involved in the corruption. She decided to impeach Trump not because he did something wrong but because she was protecting her son.".

Excellent article, rse.

After Harry's meeting with the Queen, I started writing down my thoughts on what had just happened and where I thought it was all going. The long and the short of it, Harry and his wife are way out of their league.

The Queen has been through these things all of her life, both as an observer (King Edward VIII) and as the Monarch. She has dealt with far more difficult situations and far more clever and important people. No matter how fond she may be of Harry, the Queen's primary commitment is to the monarchy, the Royal family and the British Commonwealth. She will out fox and outplay them. I'll bet she already has her advisors working on the terms of a separation, divorce and custody issues.

WARNING; crazy people talk. If uninterested SOB.

--Ig, your 7 pm---if you are reading, I am sure you have read that our prisons are full of them--meaning remediation is EXTREMELY difficult--involves good therapists--for a LONG time.
(Absolutely NOT implying she is a criminal!)--

Our prisons are primarily full of Anti Social Personality Disorders. IIRC a large majority.
Borderlines do engage in considerable domestic violence, but there are different flavors of BPD. The raging, clinging drama queens are one type. The girl I was seeing is a "quiet" borderline. They turn their feelings and anger etc inward. Emotional dysregulation is only apparent when they are so stressed they finally act out. That's one thing that made it hard to figure out who I was dealing with.

--My personal experience has been with an ex BIL--who STILL dominates his family, and thus effects ours in many ways, two decades out from the "divorce." --

There really is a vast difference between PDs. It is true there is often comorbidity or overlap but in most cases the pattern of behavior is rote, persistent and recognizable.
Those with NPD are closely associated with psychopathy. Anyone within their gravitational well is either a sycophant or an enemy. An N produces a cult like bubble to live in. No meds help with PDs because they are not primarily biochemically based, at least not in any way we understand or can control through chemistry. And Ns because of the nature of their illness almost never submit to therapy. They are thus fairly hopeless.
But an N is nothing like someone with Avoidant Personality Disorder or Schizotypal PD which are in different clusters. Nor is NPD very much like Histrionic PD which IS in the same cluster.
If your BIL is an N and kids are involved the unfortunate fact is, barring a miracle, he will use that familial relationship to harm and manipulate anyone connected to them, especially his ex.

--BIL and SIl are both ongoing situations; BIL having huge impact on his kids (as expected)
SIL still managing to mess up things for her sibs as well.--

A substantial majority of those diagnosed with NPD are men. 75% of those diagnosed with BPD are women.
If either your BIL or SIL are Ns then, as I said above, hopeless. The only solution is for those effected to cut them out of their lives. If his kids can't cut him out then they and those connected to them will have their lives manipulated and harmed by your BIL.
If your SIL has BPD [and there are other possibilities; CPTSD, Bipolar, NPD, Histrionic or some combo thereof] there is the possibility of long term remission as I'll note below.

--And Ig--not challenging your figure, looking for better news. Some new breakthrough treatment??
That 70% figure is extremely optimistic Ig--and of course you feel for her--you are (In online life, anyway) a major empath...
...If it's not hard to find the 70%, please link or give me a reference.--

I'm not going to go look for the links, but the wikipedia page on BPD and treatments for BPD is a very good start.
Until approximately 15-20 years ago Borderlines were generally considered as resistant to treatment as Narcissists. But Bs are somehow fundamentally different in that they do have empathy, they can at times let people into that facade they've built and if they do become sufficiently self aware they can seek help. An N who is self aware [and many are] it seldom leads to anything other than renewed effort to make the facade even more unbreachable by becoming, this scarcely seems possible to people who know Ns, an even bigger jerk. If they go to therapy it goes about as well as you would expect it to with guys who always have to be the smartest guy in the room and who are so insecure they believe anyone breaching their facade and seeing what they believe is a fatally flawed inner being constitutes literally an existential threat that they will fight to the death if necessary to prevent.
But two things happened as CBT came to the fore, replacing so much of that insipid Freudian crap. A Dr Linehan who has BPD and had herself been misdiagnosed as having Bipolar developed something called Dialectical Behavioral Therapy specifically for BPD. It combines CBT with an amalgam of Buddhist mindfulness exercises etc and seems to help. It is first and foremost designed for severe cases of BPD to lower the risks of self harm and suicide and at which it is pretty effective.
But it is somewhat complicated and unwieldy and finding a therapist who is good at it is not easy.
At about the same time Schema therapy was developed and widely accepted for all manner of illnesses. It is easier and has a lower rate of drop outs than DBT.
There have been two, admittedly small psych studies, as most are, demonstrating that of those people who stick with schema therapy ~70% after four years will no longer meet the criteria for BPD. That is similar to the numbers I've seen for DBT but it's harder to stick with.
Both, like all CBT, involve training to acquire the skills to recognize, stop and/or cope with the harmful behaviors and defense mechanisms that their minds have developed. Just going to therapy is of no value if they can't commit to practicing and doing the work necessary to retrain the brain to develop new neural pathways that replace the old, unhealthy defective ones.
An untreated case of BPD is incapable of a successful relationship. A person with BPD who is in therapy to recover is almost certainly incapable of a successful relationship for the same reason holding an AA meeting in the local tavern that starts off with drinks on the house for the AA group would be. The attempt to form relationships without knowing how and being incapable of doing so is to BPD as alcohol is to a drunk.
But because I care about this girl, even though I can't have a relationship with her, I'm no more going to walk away without at least trying once to nudge her toward help than I would turn and walk away from someone I saw drowning.

JM Hanes

I'm glad to see that the 2nd Amendment rally organizers are suing Virginia over the governor's gun ban. It seems unconstitutional to me in terms of both the right to bear arms and freedom of assembly, not that that will stop a lefty judge from blessing the ban. I think there's a strong public safety argument to be made, as I suggested at 6:23 PM yesterday against banning guns, but I don't think it has constitutional weight.

On second thought, I think I'll just post a slightly edited version of my previous comment, instead of just a link.

The VA Governor has escalated the danger level exponentially. Most counter-protesters would probably think twice about trying to disrupt a mass of armed demonstrators, but even worse, the governor's order puts law enforcement officers in a perilous, untenable position. They will now be faced with disarming and/or arresting an armed -- and angry -- populace, rather than simply policing a demonstration. They are being unnecessarily pitted against the protestors as adversaries, not keepers of the peace. That's a wholly owned Democrat powder keg, and I'm sorry to say, one they would be delighted to watch exploding.

I hope the rally organizers are also consulting with law enforcement on how to avoid potential traps.

MissMarple2

More crazy talk. SOB is your friend.

--Question: Can (as in--Is it possible) a "normie" (lesser damaged, maybe?) even have "emotional parity" with someone they assess to have a PD from the get go?
Seems to me you are already going in there deciding you are the responsible/sane/whatever one. That the other is in need of change/fixing.--

First off, very few people enter a relationship with someone they assess to have a PD from the get go.
All PDs but especially the Cluster B ones are made up of people who have developed defense mechanisms and facades that for a time mimic healthy personalities. Even after they've become enmeshed with them few people understand what they're dealing with unless a head shrinker tells them. I always just assumed my brother was a just a horrible person until a psychologist friend told me he was an N. I didn't know my gal was a B until after we broke up and I went to a T and he told me she was one. And even then I didn't believe him because I didn't really understand the aspects of the illness until later.

Codependents do gravitate toward or are attractive to people with PDs. If your identity comes from having someone needy to take care of and fix then there's no better project than a Cluster B. People with PDs also frequently end up with other people with the same or different PDs.
However, assuming we're talking about NPD or BPD and not something much more obvious like a Schizoid or something then of course there can never be emotional parity and it has nothing to do with blind spots of the normie. A person with NPD or BPD does not experience the world or their own emotions healthily. One of the primary traits of BPD is emotional dysregulation. They have little or no control of their emotions. The essence of a PD is they have usually received some type of childhood trauma or perceived themselves to have that stops their emotional development at a pre adolescent stage. They grow up with adult desires and intellect and abilities but because of the wound, they early on developed a a toddlers emotional defenses to protect themselves from being hurt that way again.
How could one possibly have emotional parity with a spouse or sibling who is a petulant, scared five year old in an adult body?
That IS their personality and it is very unlikely to ever change. For those that are not resistant to therapy they can retrain their mind to act, react and understand others and themselves better. But most head shrinkers consider them treatable but incurable. A few think they can be cured. Regardless, with therapy some can lead much better and even happy lives even if the underlying traits remain. The external disruptions, damage and unhappiness in their lives comes not so much from their wounds which cause their internal anguish, but from their attempts to defend or compensate for those wounds. Those external factors CAN be changed in some PDs if the person becomes self aware enough to even know they have a problem and need help and then is willing to do the difficult and lengthy work to get better.

I ran into some alarmist hack over at Judith Curry's blog repeatedly posting this scary, scary graph of nearly boiling oceans [I can't fit the whole thing. Better view at link below];

Thankfully the indispensable Willis Eschenbach had a look see at the underlying study which features the hack Trenberth and the malignant and delusional Mikey Mann.

The Ocean Warms By A Whole Little

The climate punks, mostly commie Chinese, who did the study used zettajoules as their lingua franca.
Willis helpfully converted that to degrees of temperature instead. Turns out that ominous, catastrophic graph describes slightly over one tenth of one degree of warming of the oceans over the last sixty years.
Climate punks.

That Ted Cruz tweet I posted above has over 2900 replies, most appearing positive to Cruz, and over 14,000 retweets.

Word is getting around on the money scams going on in DC!

You go girl! I'm reminded of John D. Loudermilk's tune "Dead Skunk In The Middle Of The Road". If you see or smell a dead skunk, or a hack journalist, why not call it out?

Ignatz Ratzkiwatzki

As Willis points out at the bottom of the article if the later higher rate of warming were extrapolated forward it would take three centuries to warm the ocean 1 degree.

Wasn't Dead Skunk by Loudon Wainright III?

Sure, Iggy, make light of that. But in about 100,000 years the oceans will be boiling.

As much as I've done to eradicate all memories of that crap, yes.

More on that boiling sea study.
The commie authors claimed a margin of error in their calculations of +/-.003 of a degree.

In the comments someone noted that the Argo sea temp buoys we have used since 2005 and are by far the most accurate method we have ever had can only measure sea temps to an accuracy of +/-.6 of a degree.

Climate punks produce junk fake science.

Ig, this was the money 'graph for me:

"In this case, the ocean absorbs about 6,360 zettajoules (10^21 joules) of energy per year. That’s an almost unimaginably immense amount of energy—by comparison, the entire human energy usage from all sources, fossil and nuclear and hydro and all the rest, is about 0.6 zettajoules per year …

And of course, the ocean loses almost exactly that much energy as well—if it didn’t, soon we’d either boil or freeze.

So how large is the imbalance between the energy entering and leaving the ocean? Well, over the period of record, the average annual change in ocean heat content per Cheng et al. is 5.5 zettajoules per year … which is about one-tenth of one percent (0.1%) of the energy entering and leaving the ocean. As I said … amazing stability."
