The NY Times runs a piece on immigration from a self-declared "liberal restrictionist". Guess what? In his time as a reporter he learned that Big Business liked the availability of cheap labor AND leftists liked the prospect of new union members and (one day) voters. Who knew?!?
I’m a Liberal Who Thinks Immigration Must Be Restricted
Immigration can invigorate the country. But when it is poorly managed, it can cause social division — just as it’s doing right now.
By
In 2001, when I was the new Washington correspondent for The Arizona Republic, I attended the annual awards dinner of the National Immigration Forum. The forum is a left-right coalition that lobbies for unauthorized immigrants and expansive immigration policies. Its board has included officials of the National Council of La Raza, the American Civil Liberties Union and the American Immigration Lawyers Association, as well as the United States Chamber of Commerce, the National Restaurant Association and the American Nursery and Landscape Association.
After dinner, the group’s executive director, Frank Sharry, made a pitch to business allies who wanted Congress to allow them unfettered access to foreign workers. “You guys in business get all the workers you want, whenever you want them,” he proposed. “No bureaucracy.”
“Sold!” yelled John Gay, a lobbyist for the American Hotel and Lodging Association. Mr. Sharry quickly added that the deal must include advocacy for “three little, tiny pieces of paper: a green card, a union card and a voter registration card” for unauthorized immigrants.
For me, a reporter who had long covered immigration in the Southwest and Mexico, the exchange was a revelation about the politics of immigration in Washington. Business lobbyists like Mr. Gay — conservatives who seek loose labor markets so employers can keep wages down — align themselves with liberal activists like Frank Sharry to pursue policies that serve their groups.
OK, that was 2001, but really? The Chamber of Commerce Republicans have been in an unholy immigration alliance with the Emerging Democratic Majority people for decades.
Who, I wondered, was lobbying for the American workers competing with the new arrivals? The answer, I learned, was no one. As the former labor secretary Robert Reich once put it, “There’s no National Association of Working Poor.”
This mismatch of political influence, combined with the social and fiscal consequences of a wave of low-skilled immigrants, led me to believe that immigration should be restricted so that its power to invigorate our country is not eclipsed by its potential to harm workers. I think immigration, like capitalism itself, should be regulated in the national interest, not shaped to serve the free-market libertarianism of the right or the post-national humanitarianism of the left.
That’s why I call myself a liberal restrictionist.
This might be Mickey Kaus' moment.
First?

Mr. Kramer is on his way, but he's still clinging to the self-righteous baby blanky of liberalism. He knows that an unrestricted, unregulated flow of cheap, illegal labor is economically, politically and socially destructive, yet he cannot bring himself to break with the old rhetoric. Oh well, it's a first step.

Spotify works for me because they've snagged enough labels and musicians I like to keep me happy. If I can't find it there most musicians have a Bandcamp site where they receive everything. Some musicians offer monthly subscriptions where they just release bunches of stuff for you; it's a good deal if you're enamored with their music. I haven't done it but I know some people, both online and in the real world, who like it.

Undoubtedly I've mentioned that I've performed with his recording engineer, Max Wilcox. May he rest in peace.

Verbatim transcript in next several tweets...
HOST Larry O’Connor: "What's the deal with General Flynn pleading guilty in the first place, if he didn't make a false statement? Why did he plead guilty saying that he did?"
POWELL: "Well, that will be more evident when we complete our next filing"
HOST: "Okay"
(Cont. 1/4)
POWELL: "Now I can tell you that a number of things were substantially misrepresented to him, including the fact that there were even any false statements in the FARA filing to begin with..."
(Cont. 2/4)
POWELL: "...and of course, the FBI had to rewrite the 302 to create the existence of any false statements in his statements to the agents. He was honest with the agents. But in the process of the litigation before, he was horribly misled..."
(Cont. 3/4)
POWELL: "...not to mention threatened with the indictment of his son who had a four month old baby, bankrupted already by the legal fees, had to sell his house, the stress, you know, wanting to end it all for his family and completely misled on the factual situation"

Mayo Clinic on gout:
The signs and symptoms of gout almost always occur suddenly, and often at night. They include:
Intense joint pain. Gout usually affects the large joint of your big toe, but it can occur in any joint. Other commonly affected joints include the ankles, knees, elbows, wrists and fingers. The pain is likely to be most severe within the first four to 12 hours after it begins.
Lingering discomfort. After the most severe pain subsides, some joint discomfort may last from a few days to a few weeks. Later attacks are likely to last longer and affect more joints.
Inflammation and redness. The affected joint or joints become swollen, tender, warm and red.

I think I told this story before.
We used to go up to Wisconsin on vacation every year-90 miles north of Green Bay. This was before Indy had a pro football team. My dad became a HUGE Packers fan, watching them every Sunday.
When I was in the 4th grade my dad drove into Green Bay to the stadium, had us all get out, and looked worshipfully up at it, saying "There it is, girls. There it is!"
We had to stand there about 20 minutes, until my baby brother started to fuss.

i think it was in Kramer's book INSTANT REPLAY, where the Packer god recounts an experience he had while in college, one which he believed at the time was going to end him.
he was housesitting during a summer at a farm in east begeezus. one evening, after dark, the cows get out. he gives chase.
gaining ground he is within 10 feet of the slowest cow. he's about to make his move when the pointed end of a wrecked 2x6 rears up as the cow steps on the far end.
The unsuspecting Kramer catches the speartip just to the left of his junk, deep into his groin, piercing into his colon. he laid there awhile nearly bleeding out.
the wound infected immediately. friends found him unconscious but had the wherewithal to saw off some of the footage and leave the speartip in place so he wouldnt bleed out.
he was hospitalized. the splintering forced the doctors to remove some of his colon and put him on a c-bag for quite awhile. it was one of the low points in his life.
Kramer fought back. and took the lessons with him. i dint reflect on that story until that dark day the cardiologist told me i needed heart surgery.
i'm sure my recall of the precise deets is murky. but what Kramer and most Packer lore impressed upon me early on is that comebacks are an essential part of living.

YHGTKM
In a laundry list of reasons why he pled guilty, the third or fourth item is a vague allusion to some “threat.” No substantiation of this “threat” and no indication of why the kid would not be indicted even if he pled guilty. Also, if he withdraws the guilty plea, why won’t they indict the kid now? Or does Flynn Sr no longer care.
Absurd to accept something like this as “ending the debate.” It’s barely some evidence and a far cry from conclusive.

I have a large physical music collection and carry around several micro SD cards loaded with stuff, now that I've gotten a car w/out the ability to play CDs. I was also issued a PC at work that has no CD drive, so I brought home a bunch of my work-suitable CDs that I've had in my office since the late '90s.
My main listening setup is my laptop with the audio running out thru a Little Dot I+ headphone amp into some surprisingly good inexpensive headphones. No earbuds for me. When doing chores I use some "SkullCandy SkullCrushers" that no longer made, which I like because they're so snug they never fall off. I bought a stash of them to last me a while.

Shot by his girlfriend at a club during a blizzard. Ordinarily he'd have survived if an ambulance had made it in normal time but he bled out as the snow prevented a prompt arrival. Sad end for an incredible musician.

i caught the very tail end of Powell's interview with Levin today 1-17-20. He made reference to "the threat" against Flynn's boy. Powell verified it.
that doesnt mean i believe one way or other.
Powell made reference to "next Friday" and "it's going to be epic,"
what will be epic, i don't know. but she was on Levin getting him to pitch fundraising site for Flynn's legal defense--- which Levin did in a gung ho way.
we'll see.

My post at 8:53 explains why the President talks about how great the economy is doing, job numbers, wages, etc. every time he has an appearance like with LSU's football team this morning, and why he does rallies.
The imbalance of coverage is a disgrace.
