The NY Times runs a piece on immigration from a self-declared "liberal restrictionist". Guess what? In his time as a reporter he learned that Big Business liked the availability of cheap labor AND leftists liked the prospect of new union members and (one day) voters. Who knew?!?
I’m a Liberal Who Thinks Immigration Must Be Restricted
Immigration can invigorate the country. But when it is poorly managed, it can cause social division — just as it’s doing right now.
By
In 2001, when I was the new Washington correspondent for The Arizona Republic, I attended the annual awards dinner of the National Immigration Forum. The forum is a left-right coalition that lobbies for unauthorized immigrants and expansive immigration policies. Its board has included officials of the National Council of La Raza, the American Civil Liberties Union and the American Immigration Lawyers Association, as well as the United States Chamber of Commerce, the National Restaurant Association and the American Nursery and Landscape Association.
After dinner, the group’s executive director, Frank Sharry, made a pitch to business allies who wanted Congress to allow them unfettered access to foreign workers. “You guys in business get all the workers you want, whenever you want them,” he proposed. “No bureaucracy.”
“Sold!” yelled John Gay, a lobbyist for the American Hotel and Lodging Association. Mr. Sharry quickly added that the deal must include advocacy for “three little, tiny pieces of paper: a green card, a union card and a voter registration card” for unauthorized immigrants.
For me, a reporter who had long covered immigration in the Southwest and Mexico, the exchange was a revelation about the politics of immigration in Washington. Business lobbyists like Mr. Gay — conservatives who seek loose labor markets so employers can keep wages down — align themselves with liberal activists like Frank Sharry to pursue policies that serve their groups.
OK, that was 2001, but really? The Chamber of Commerce Republicans have been in an unholy immigration alliance with the Emerging Democratic Majority people for decades.
Who, I wondered, was lobbying for the American workers competing with the new arrivals? The answer, I learned, was no one. As the former labor secretary Robert Reich once put it, “There’s no National Association of Working Poor.”
This mismatch of political influence, combined with the social and fiscal consequences of a wave of low-skilled immigrants, led me to believe that immigration should be restricted so that its power to invigorate our country is not eclipsed by its potential to harm workers. I think immigration, like capitalism itself, should be regulated in the national interest, not shaped to serve the free-market libertarianism of the right or the post-national humanitarianism of the left.
That’s why I call myself a liberal restrictionist.
This might be Mickey Kaus' moment.

HALF of Manhattan's new luxury skyscraper condos sit unsold and empty after foreign oligarchs appear to lose interest in the New York property market
Data shows half of Manhattan condos built since 2015 have never been sold
The luxury condo market has cooled even as the economy continues to soar
Experts point to the soaring cost of new units compared to resale units
Developers have been marketing extreme high-end units at foreign oligarchs
But for foreign billionaires seem to be losing interest in NYC real estate
It's easy to mis-time the real estate market in Manhattan. From conception to completion a building make take more than a dozen years to actually hit the market.
This is interesting: "The report, which looked at buildings with 30 units or more, says the slowdown was 'not obviously caused by supply,' and suggests that pricing may be the key factor.
In recent years, Manhattan has seen an explosion of new condo units targeted at the obscenely wealthy — most prominently on Billionaire's Row near the south end of Central Park.
The price of a new condo is now 118 percent higher than a resale unit on average, up from just a 9 percent difference in 2005."
You can buy a comparable older condo for 50% less than one of the new ones. That suggests that the new highest end condos were either over-built or over-priced. Maybe both.
Similar to the building boom in Chinese real estate you can wait for buyers to finally meet your price or lower the price and piss off everyone else who already bought into your building.

And you can get a high end home in NJ, with grounds, for a lot less money.

So maybe those high end condos in NYC are vacant because of faulty market projections. Maybe the foreign "whales" have less money to spend here. Maybe the change in SALT tax deductions matter. Maybe the crackdown on money laundering has had an impact.
Me, if I was suddenly rich, would probably avoid owning NY real estate. The state has tax-Nazis that go after you over the tax domicile issue. Who needs that hassle.

JIB, have they ever come after you with a home in Florida and one in New York?

Sullivan seemed less than pleased with Powell at that hearing late last year when he slapped down whatever motion she was making at the time.
Sullivan is a coward and a tool of the deep state and a jackass.
If he’d actually done his job during the Ted Stevens persecution, and actually punished the criminal, out of control DoJ prosecutors, maybe they’d be a little less gang-ho about this endless illegitimate witch hunt against everyone associated with the President.
But he didn’t, because as noted, he’s a coward and a jackass and he can go screw himself.

jason garrett needs to take a break.
He might be better as a coordinator than as a head coach.
He’s the only decision so far for the Giants this year that I’m not totally down on.

James D,
That was a hmm feeling for me. Garrett is very well respected by the Giants organization. Has been for some time.
My first thought was that he would prefer another head coaching job. It's hard to take a step down, but after Jerry Jones, he might have wanted a role with an organization that could be more supportive of him.
It could be great fun if Garrett feels a need to demonstrate to the Cowboys the folly of their actions.

I despise black robed tyrants as much as anyone but clarice stated that Sullivan followed the rules in punishing the DOJ creeps in the Stevens case as much as possible. Maybe GOPe heroes like Paul Ryan or John Boehner should have initiated changing the rules instead of following their paymasters wishes.

will cause MSM to investigate Pedo Island!
Ruled that out--way too many Leftists must be involved.
We've not heard a word from Pelosi's daughter after her initial Tweet, counseling everyone to let it unfold, despite all who were going to be exposed, have we? Her momma must have explained to her where the money she lives off of comes from, now that the Ukrainian cash has been shut down.
