I agree with your approach here. Let’s see what “epic” things come next week. Maybe there will be true substantiation of this “threat.” But at this point, a vague allusion by someone on a fundraising campaign is not enough to overcome the many leaps of logic necessary to believe that Flynn pled guilty to something that he did not do because of such a “threat.”

Let’s be honest and real. Powell is trying to get money out of people for Flynn’s defense. The biggest single obstacle is the guilty plea. She needs to explain that. She throws a lot of dust in the air but the business about the “threat” strikes me as hand waving.

But by all means, let’s wait and see if there is real substance and real documentation to this claim.

A very strange case indeed.

I remain astonished of the all out effort by law enforcement personnel to nail Flynn on some pretty ticky tacky stuff.

We will see what epic disclosures erupt next week.

Captain Hate

I'm sure I did, DrJ; Lee is a fluidly approachable musician. In his last recording, Live at the Lighthouse, he was going beyond the hard bop genre into a more open ended modal approach. Who knows where that would've led?

Threadkiller

If Flynn’s kid wasn’t used as part of the motivation for Flynn to be cooperative with the government, the MFM would have made sure to have debunked the theory with the help of DoJ leaks. That is what they do.

I noticed that the rest of Powell’s contentions were left unmentioned in the fundraising theory. Weren’t those enough to get people to hand over dough to Flynn?

Threadkiller

Haven’t watched the video yet, MM. But I have it saved!

Catsmeat

Thanks, Jack, for that episode of Sanditon--they leave what Austen wrote after about 20 minutes in, but it's beautiful and sort of makes sense! The rebuke by Sidney (putative hero) is there to echo Darcy's unwillingness to dance with Elizabeth Bennet, I'd say--the clash that makes the final romance all the more desirable, given the conventions of romance fiction. It's very nice, all told, and Lady Denham is deliciously awful. But they don't do justice to Sir Edward's stupid Romantic effusions, which are hilarious in the manuscript. Will teach it again next week.

Citing the rising cost of road salt and environmental concerns, area snowplows are now using Skittles to maintain winter highways at milder temperatures.

“We were just as skeptical as anyone with the initiative,” says Strickland, “but it works. Skittles consist of a hard shell which shatter when frozen and create grit. The citric acid inside also helps break down pre-existing ice and prevents build-up when the temperature drops.”

You are simply mistaken. Read the entirety of Joan’s post that you referred to earlier. The thing about the son is WAY down the long list of reasons why he pled guilty.

The argument that this vague, illogical and unsubstantiated allegation must be true because it has not somehow been debunked by the MFM is not a credible argument or analysis worthy of the name.

As I said before, maybe the son did have something to do with his guilty plea. But this is far from a “debate over” situation.

As KK suggests, let’s see the filing that we have been promised before we draw any firm conclusions.

Dave (in MA)

The Infamous Ignatz

--That ends that debate.--

Unfortunately it doesn't because the person who supposedly ended it is also the one who supposedly kept it going with her previous statement.
This is not a life changing issue for me so I'll just speculate that Flynn considered the Feds opening an investigation of his son as a veiled threat. I tend to believe it was at the very least intended to pressure him.
But some people made the claim there was an explicit threat and Flynn made a deal that precluded them pursuing his son. I've seen no evidence of that.

Captain Hate

I noticed that the rest of Powell’s contentions were left unmentioned in the fundraising theory. Weren’t those enough to get people to hand over dough to Flynn?

If Flynn is running an opp against the derp state, the fundraising thing is problematic for me. Fund raisers of this type are because people are in financial difficulties not of their making. Others here are more generous to pols than I am, most of which I'd burn money in the driveway rather than give it to, so what do you say? If you gave money for Flynn's legal bills would you feel conned if the expenses were generated deliberately by him or would you feel the end result was worth it?

The Infamous Ignatz

Previously linked;

HANNITY: So [the FBI] withhold the exculpatory information... then the agents that interviewed him didn't think he lied. You either say you lied or we're going after your kids. So I am just guessing that a soldier, a man of honor said I'm not going to let my kid go down for something I didn't do. I'll dive on the sword. Why do I imagine that is the scenario that really unfolded?

POWELL: When you put together the fact that Mr. Mueller got the letter authorizing him to target Michael Flynn Jr., and they had seized Michael Flynn Jr.'s computers and electronic devices and those things, it’s not too hard to imagine that that might have happened.

Not exactly dispositive.

Narciso

There was no one else in the entire concourse?

Threadkiller

Exactly, CH. Also, if there was no deep state sting, and the fundraiser was legitimate, wouldn’t you feel just as pissed when you found out that Powell was lying about the circumstances? She has nothing to gain by lying about Flynn’s son.

The Infamous Ignatz

--I thought the debate was whether or not Powell ever corroborated the rumor of Flynn’s kid.--

That's sort of what it became. Initially it was the repeated contention that prosecutors went after Flynn Jr and Flynn Sr copped a plea to guarantee his kid wasn't prosecuted. Theo asked whether that was fact or merely internet "truth".

Threadkiller

I thought the Hannity interview was prior to the interview that Joan linked?

Captain Hate

Yes, TK; we've been flying blind for so long on the Flynn thing that I can't imagine Sullivan not being irked at everyone except maybe Powell.

The Infamous Ignatz

Kind of hard to be accused of lying if you say it's not hard to imagine something happening.

As to her second statement, is she saying prosecutors told Flynn they were going after his son or does she mean Flynn inferred the threat because they were investigating Jr?

Here is the quote. I spliced it together from Joan’s comment:

Now I can tell you that a number of things were substantially misrepresented to him, including the fact that there were even any false statements in the FARA filing to begin with and of course, the FBI had to rewrite the 302 to create the existence of any false statements in his statements to the agents. He was honest with the agents. But in the process of the litigation before, he was horribly misled not to mention threatened with the indictment of his son who had a four month old baby, bankrupted already by the legal fees, had to sell his house, the stress, you know, wanting to end it all for his family and completely misled on the factual situation"

I would say she is saying they threatened him.

Fudged statistics and little evidence of success, huge amounts of money wasted, Inspector General's reports ignored.

And NOW the Washington Post is doing a big expose, no doubt in an effort to blame the President, even though the lying was done TO him, not BY him.

Threadkiller

Nytol

The Infamous Ignatz

--I would say she is saying they threatened him.--

Maybe but her comment wasn't made in a vacuum. Her Hannity comment still exists and provides context and implies they didn't.

Threadkiller

I think any Hannity comment gets a grain of salt jammed in edgewise between his relentless yammering, if possible. His question was so overbearing I don’t blame her for answering it cautiously. She probably couldn’t believe she had a chance to speak.

Threadkiller

Hannity suggests that the feds said a specific thing, “you either say you lied or we go after your kids.” Powell, a lawyer, decides to not fully sign onto that theory.

Larry O’Connor, without creating wild hypotheticals, simply asks her why he pled guiltily when he wasn’t and she gives a more complete answer in her own words.

Captain Hate

Nobody responded to my question so I guess those who read it are as niggardly to pols as I am.

https://www.scientificamerican.com/article/does-consciousness-pervade-the-universe/

"One of science’s most challenging problems is a question that can be stated easily: Where does consciousness come from? In his new book Galileo’s Error: Foundations for a New Science of Consciousness, philosopher Philip Goff considers a radical perspective: What if consciousness is not something special that the brain does but is instead a quality inherent to all matter? It is a theory known as “panpsychism,” and Goff guides readers through the history of the idea, answers common objections (such as “That’s just crazy!”) and explains why he believes panpsychism represents the best path forward. He answered questions from Mind Matters editor Gareth Cook."

Theo

On the Flynn business, I think Ignatz is — as he is so often — right on the mark. The most plausible explanation for the various claims is that Flynn viewed the prosecution efforts to subpoena records and maybe testimony from Flynn Jr as a veiled threat or some kind of a pressure tactic to get him to cop a plea. Maybe it was, but there is at this point no credible evidence that Flynn was explicitly told that if he did not plead guilty his son would be indicted or explicitly promised that if he did cop a plea his son would not be investigated. The prosecutors would run a terrible risk making either such a promise or threat explicit.

So maybe Flynn inferred from their actions wrt to his son that if he didn’t cooperate they would ratchet things up by looking hard at his son. Maybe, despite being an intelligent man an a Lieutenant General, he had some half assed hope that if he caved they would drop the investigation into his son.

Given what Powell said in response to the “why did he plead guilty” question, she had a long litany of reasons. Only one of them had anything to do with his son. And that one can probably be interpreted to mean that Flynn took into account the perceived veiled threat described above as opposed to some express quid pro quo where Jr was prosecuted if Flynn did not plead guilty and was totally in the clear if he did.

So I guess TK wants to frame the issue as “did the feds threaten prosecution of the son or not.” I think that is the wrong question but my answer to that question would be “perhaps a veiled threat but almost certainly not an explicit one.”

But as I said that is the wrong question. The important question is “did Flynn plead guilty to something that he did not do in order to protect his son from prosecution?” This remains highly unlikely. First, it is far from clear that there was any such threat and at most was probably a veiled one. Second, he could have no assurance that his guilty plea would save his son from prosecution because such a deal could never be documented and he would be a fool to accept a wink and a nod. Third even if the threat was a factor in convincing him to plead guilty it does not necessarily mean he was agreeing to plead guilty to something that he did not do. The perception of a threat may have been part of a calculus to plead to something that he thought that he might or might not be able to beat in a jury trial. That is very different from agreeing to plead guilty to something that he did not do.

Theo

One other point re Flynn — it has been a long time since I worked on a federal plea agreement but my recollection is that there is boilerplate language in them that other than as set forth in the document, no other promises have been made to the defendant in order to induce a guilty plea. Well if Flynn signs that he cannot complain if the kid is thereafter prosecuted.

Again this goes back to Iggy’s “veiled threat” theory. If the threat is only veiled it cannot really be removed. Flynn would have to simply hope that the prosecution lost interest in Jr. That seems like a poor basis to plead guilty to something that he did not do.
