I wish Kyrgios had won. But at least I'm first!

Bolton's said he'd testify if called. And now bits of his story are leaking - of course he'd have known about that ahead of time. If he stands on the sidelines much longer without making a statement, we know he's a creep or a 4D Wizard. In the end, does the Senate really want to see a lot of Ukraine information dredged up, as witnesses would do?

henry

I don't know what the Senate wants, but the press and NeverTrumps are drooling.

matt - deplore me if you must

I first saw John Prine when I was @ 13 years old at a folk club on the Main Line outside of Philly. Loved his wry sense of humor and his songwriting.

I actually have a Prine playlist on my iPod. "Hello in There", "Do You Want to Dance", Let's Talk Dirty in Hawaiian". Some many great songs.

John S

as of 12:50 today, the S&P 500 is down 1.12%. The Coronavirus news keeps getting worse. I'm afraid this could be a major disruption, and the market may slide for some time, especially since it has had quite a run-up recently.

Captain Hate

>>He's not questioning Bolton's loyalties or ethics.

>>He's saying Bolton's doing this to sell books.

What is Bolton doing? This was a leak from government where Bolton doesn't work. Bolton didn't leak this, people trying to get Trump leaked this.

Again, the DOJ has already said the quotes in the leak about the DOJ are false. Why would anyone believe everything else is totally accurate?
Posted by: JackStraw at January 27, 2020 12:46 PM (ZLI7S)

Theo

It’s not really about what “the Senate” wants. It’s in the hands of four Republican Senators. Romney has pretty much said he will vote to hear Bolton. I don’t think Collins can politically afford to vote not to hear Bolton. Two more votes to hear Bolton and he will be called.

This opens all sorts of worm cans.

Again, I think the ultimate outcome is not in doubt but the feeling over the weekend that this will end quickly and quietly has pretty much gone down the drain.

John S

The trial is set to resume shortly. Will the Rs' counsel address the Bolton issue today?

Captain Hate

>Because Bolton could end this now with a simple, concise statement.

>>Bolton has not yet released such a statement.

No, no he couldn't. Nothing is stopping this now.

Maybe he doesn't want this to end. Maybe Trump doesn't either.

How many times does Trump have to say he wants witnesses before people believe Trump wants witnesses? Trump has done nothing wrong. Many, many Democrats did.

Buckeye

Here's a 4-D theory for you.

Xi wants Trump to lose the next election or get booted out.

Nothing would help that effort like a severe economic downturn that Trump can do nothing about.

Release the weaponized "novel coronavirus".

Melinda

Let's clear the line:

Theo

As I understand it, what the Bolton book actually says is that Bolton asked Trump to unfreeze the aid to Ukraine and Trump responded that he was not convinced that Ukraine was really free of corruption and that he would prefer to hold on to the money until Ukraine cooperated with efforts to investigate Ukrainian election meddling on behalf of Hillary bin 2016, (I.e., the Rudy theories). No mention of Biden.

But parsing the language (which we have not seen) is not going to lead to a quick end to this. The Democrats will now insist that there is direct eviof quid pro quo. It might be weak evidence and it may come from a guy trying to sell books, but weak evidence is very different from “no” evidence.

The hope for an early end to peach mint has taken a real blow. I think it is fantasy to think that Trump wanted this or is happy about it.

But ultimately not much is really changed. He will be acquitted but it will take longer and the Dems will have more talking points.

Boricuafudd

So Trump ""Preferred"" to hold aid until the Ukraine corruption/election interfering was investigated. And??

Aid not withheld and no investigation or announcement of one was declared.

I would preferred to do many things, however I'm only able to do few. Let's move on. Bolton is another 'dud' by the MSM that over promises but under delivers.

If anything, this may allow Trump to get witness testimony that he would not otherwise get. Makes you wonder if the WH is the source of the leak.

Melinda

Theo, you seem concerned.

Narciso

I think thats a reasonable interpretation.

I dont think xi is that reckless, but whoever handles these issues was negligent.

Narciso

1.17 doesnt seem an appreciable drop.

Narciso

No of course not. Dave that would be silly.

Theo

Boricuafudd —

Again, I think it is extremely unlikely that the WH wanted this to come out, particularly now. It complicates matters considerably and interrupts the fairly triumphant mood of the weekend. This is NOT good news for Trump. The timing probably could not have been worse.

OTOH it’s not devastating either. A complication, a set back and additional talking points for the Dems. But acquittal is still a virtual certainty and the whole peach mint business will be an afterthought in November.

MissMarple2

NYT reporter who peddled Bolton's book spin, which has now been directly contradicted on the record by both Trump and AG Bill Barr, is already starting to back away from Bolton's alleged claims. https://t.co/zMW7fHHXOS

Theo

Melinda —

I am being realistic. It would have been much better if Bolton had not written whatever he wrote. This gives the Dems talking point ammunition. It probably leads to Bolton testifying in the Senate. It’s not good news.

But the sky is not falling. He will be acquitted. The election is unlikely to depend on whatever Bolton says.

But I think those who see this as good news or some Trump 4D move are fooling themselves.

John S

Narciso, 1.17% is just today. the market also fell on Friday. There is now news of Chinese factories closing. I am not an alarmist, but I think this could have an ongoing effect.

Buford Gooch

I've been in favor of calling witnesses all along. It's OK with me if they don't, but you can bet it's not going to be only Democrat approved witnesses if it happens. This will be an amazing clownshow if they do call witnesses.

Theo

Porchlight on the dead thread suggested that Buttigieg might be angling for VP at this point.

My assessment is that Ruth Bader Ginsburg has about the same chance of being the next Pope as Mayor Pete has of being the VP nominee this year.

If the presidential nominee is male the Dems will absolutely require that the running mate is female. If the Dem presidential nominee is female, they would pick a hetero male. A woman and a gay man would be problematic for them.

Boricuafudd

Theo- I tend to agree with what you said. However, the triumphant mood you describe can only to ascribed to the Republicans but if you listen to the media it was far from a 'slam-dunk', I think it should have been.

Calling all witnesses will be the only way that this farce is going to be settled. Unfortunately, I fear. Whether the WH wanted or not.

OTH, the Dems might also want to drag this out, to keep Bernie tied with the peach mint instead of campaigning.

Melinda

Supes allow WH rules on denying green cards over public assistance use.

I have generally been a fan of Bolton, because his views have been more aligned with mine in specific areas, but I DO worry that he's more of an Establishment / DC Swamp Creature than I would prefer.

This, and his firing by Trump, make me worry that he will take this opportunity to "dish some dirt" to get even with Trump.

Hope I'm wrong.

Bolton left the White House on terrible terms and was not always seen as a reliable narrator by colleagues. The he said/he said of him versus Trump on tying the aid to investigations is testing that in a pronounced way.

Jane

‘The farce” will never be settled, witnesses or not. The Dems will never stop lying, cheating and stealing. Get it over with.

Not quite sure Ken Starr was the best speaker. He’s eloquent and brilliant but I assume everyone remembers him for going after Clinton.

Buckeye

Bolton left the White House on terrible terms and was not always seen as a reliable narrator by colleagues.

I thought when Bolton was lobbying and running his mouth off before Trump gave the job, that he really sounded "full of himself".

While I have generally agreed with him on most issues, still thought he had a few screws loose.

jimmyk

On the topic of the thread :)
Anything happening?

It's about 6:15am in Melbourne, so probably not much, other than the Aussies staggering home after another night of partying. I won't spoil the other matches in case you missed them, but there was at least one pretty big upset.

As to what Porch said about every cigar exploding in the Dems' faces, yes, but it's kind of like what they say about Israel vs the Arabs. The Arabs can lose war after war, but Israel can only lose one.

Still, I doubt this amounts to much, and I hope the Rs stick to their guns that if the Ds want Bolton to testify, they have to allow Rs to call Biden, Schiff, etc. (In fact, what I really hope is that this is a ploy to get them to agree to that, which they might, especially if Nadler is out of the picture.)

Indeed, Hrts. I just think it is a waste of brain power and emotion to twist every little unknown into something that just might be good for us if the light shines through the prism at exactly the right angle when the setting sun is aligned some precise way.

In truth, nobody knows nuthin unless and until something in fact happens and we hear about it in a manner that can be trusted.

Tom R

It’s heartening to see so many JOM posters consider the possibility that Bolton and Trump could be running a 4D Chess sting operation of some sort. As I see it three possible explanations:

1) a 4D Chess sting operation is in play. The validity of this largely revolves around whether Trump wants a quick trial or a long drawn out trial with lots of witnesses.
2) Bolton lied in his book and Trump did not link foreign aid to investigating the Bidens and Burisma. In this scenarios, why Bolton would want to help his ideological enemies remains to be seen.
3) Trump has been lying to us from the outset and did threaten to withhold foreign aid until Ukraine investigated the Bidens and Burisma.

Ken Starr was was apparently assigned the historical part of the basic defense point about what an anomaly this impeachment is. Bit of a snooze, but he actually raised his voice slightly toward the end, as when he pointed out that even the racist Andrew Johnson was afforded due process in his impeachment.

I think Philbin has been making some interesting points on the legal front, but I also thought he made a telling point by asking if fixing House Impeachments by undertaking investigations the House didn't bother to conduct was how the Senate wanted to spend its time in the future. Loved his thermo-nuclear metaphor on incrementalism. I do wish the speakers would finish up with a (memorable) 1,2,3 summary of their points.

I thought Jane what's-her-name handled the Giuliani issue pretty well.

Most of the rest of the speakers are covering points they made on Saturday in greater depth. I think they decided to do a skeleton presentation on Sat., perhaps to save more time for the presentations this week when more people might be watching. There were several times on Sat. when it seemed that a couple of people were skipping pages and making decisions about how much to present on the fly

1. Maggie Haberman who wrote the article is now backstroking.

3.Bolton's book is due out. Would NSC clear it if such a claim was in it? Does the NSC have power to determine executive privilege? It does not. So such a conversation is highly unlikely to be in the book.
4. The agent for the book, perhaps thru a cut out, leaked this POS to drive up the sales.
5. Maggie bit because it suits the Dems demand for his testimony.
6. Nothing in Bolton's career indicates he would do such a thing.

That's my hypothesis and until something better comes along, I'm sticking with it.
