THE WEEK IN PICTURES: FAST START EDITION

Well 2020 is certainly off to a fast start, and liberals are already falling behind. Impeachment? What impeachment? It had already disappeared from the news even before Trump demonstrated that he’s no Barack Obama or Jimmy Carter when it comes to dealing with Iran. It’s almost like Trump is a Texas church-goer or something.

Jane

Robin,

what do you hope I am wrong about?

Robin

Not you, Jane. OL in his general pessimism that all is lost. I am happy to see him back.

Buckeye

SMOD due at 10:30 (eastern) this morning.

It was 10:30 GMT, so we have dodged another bullet.

Guess I'll put the Jameson bottle back in the cupboard:)

Buckeye

I can't speak for OL, but I hang out on The Ledge, not because I am generally pessimistic, but because I am cynical about human nature.

Robin

I see small kindnesses every day in every sphere, at least here in the west, and think that humans are generally pretty okay.

The usual inclement weather here in upstate NY prevents yet another astral event from being viewed.

Robin

A commenter at Powerline:

Lindsey Graham all but said that refineries will be the next target. He and Rubio where with Trump Thursday night.
Lindsey on Fox and Friends yesterday:
"And if I were the president, I would put on the table targets in Iran, not Iraq and Syria," Graham said. "Economic targets that would crush the economy. What would take it to the next level would be to destroy the ability of the Iranians to refine oil and sell it. The oil refineries are the last things they have in terms of economy."
Frankly, I wish he keep his mouth shut.

Signaling to the Mullahs what comes next? Normally, I would be annoyed that Graham is being this clear about targets, but he did golf with the President over the holiday. Maybe he was given permission to publicly speculate.

Robin

I went to see Little Women last night with some friends and my daughter. I really liked it - the constant shift between past and present made a familiar tale seem brand new and I had forgotten the bit about the publisher's daughters insisting on knowing how the story ends. My daughter and her friend were outraged that Laurie marries Amy, which seems to be universal among the teens. Funny how it makes more sense at Marmee's age.

The woman next to me fell asleep and started snoring during Beth's death, lending a bit of levity to the somber moment. I stifled giggles throughout.

Old Lurker

I think I get a bad rap for thinking as I do because others want to feel optimistic (most people want to feel optimistic) based on nothing (yes, I exaggerate), whereas I see human nature for what thousands of years of experience has shown time and time again. Even though from time to time the stars do align just right and good things result. Our Founding was one of those times, one of the greatest such alignments, but I fail to see enough stars of the necessary brilliance that might align in the current era such that our next 250 years - here on earth not the hereafter - will be as outstanding as were the last 250.

Though many of my friends here do get upset with that point of view, I express it in hopes that somebody might offer me some real reason to change my mind. I do not enjoy "sensing" that things are bad and getting worse, but except for "hope", nobody here has shown me "why" I am wrong.

Maybe #AwanBrother provided proof to Iran @BarackObama and many other Democrats were spying on @realDonaldTrump so Iran blackmailed Obama for the $150 billion and then gave him back a few million to buy his house in the Hamptons.

Buckeye

Seems plausible to me anonamom.

I can't imagine that Obama didn't at least get a "finder's fee".

Mrs. Buckeye thinks I am crazy for speculating that he might be the first Prez to get whacked AFTER leaving office:)

Old Lurker

Robin "I see small kindnesses every day in every sphere"

Of course! That is always the case and not just here in the west.

Flowers have always bloomed even where the worst of things sweep through the land. And somebody always manages to live more comfortably than average even in the most trying of circumstances.

Everything in life is a Bell Curve.

Captain Hate

If the drone that killed Soleimani really did launch from Qatar, Iran may have lost their last friend with any influence.

Trump has been courting the GCC since his very first international trip as president. He helped kickoff the meeting they had in Saudi to announce their support for eradicating terror, mostly from Iran. A notable exception was Qatar.

Not that the media has noticed but Trump has helped build a very unique coalition in the region that even includes Israel, all to target extremism. That is an enormous accomplishment.

I expect many more surprises that will take our betters in the media and ruling class by surprise.

Old Lurker

A-mom: "then gave him back a few million to buy his house in the Hamptons"

Some Argumentative Asshole :-) commented last night that "facts matter".

Obama paid $12M for a house on Martha's Vineyard, not the Hamptons. Jack would not have allowed that, even from Florida.

And estimates of Obama's net worth at $135M starting from nothing when he took office is more than "a few millions" in anybody's book!

Captain Hate

Everything in life is a Bell Curve.

That's one thing you harp on that can't be overstated. Where we differ is the composition of the curves.

Old Lurker

I know, Cap'n.

Old Lurker

Speaking of A-mom. I need to thank her and Jane both for getting me on the Keto bandwagon. Last New Years Day was 186. This New years day was 151. The weight on my old Draft Card (which I came across recently) was 155.

Of course that mass was distributed differently when I was 18.

Too many desserts over the holidays.

That's impressive OL. I was a same, 155 when I graduated high school.

I feel pretty confident saying it's not gonna ever happen again:)

My observation on Ms. Power's criticism above:

1. Someone tell me all of the dissidents to Obama's policy that he had working for him. I won't hold my breath.

As fad as I know, the only critic was General Flynn and we can see what happened to him.

2. This is the problem with the Iran policy of the last 20 years. All of the "experts" would predict doomsday if any action was taken against Iran. So they were allowed to run amok all over the world.

Someone writing last night said he realized that he had been waiting for news of the US acting against Iran since he had been a teen during the Carter years.

MissMarple2

Robin

Boris, yes! We opted to get her a Fender amp (Mustang, for those who care) to put under the tree and took her to our amazing local guitar shop (Ithaca Guitar Works, if you're interested in checking out their site) to try a bunch out.

She played probably a dozen to start, narrowed it down to four that she hooked up to the amp in the quiet room, then spent 40 minutes veering between a semi hollow Gretsch and a solid body Squier Strat. She finally opted for the Squier, which really is perfect for where she is. It's been fun listening to her experiment - her acoustic guitar sits sadly in its case.

Robin

Congrats OL!

That's great. I kept 40 of the 50 lbs I lost on Keto off for a year. I never really went off, but my problem (if you can believe it) is I've always been a really small eater.

About 2 weeks ago I started "Happy coffee" which is great, and I've lost 8 of that 10 lbs. If I take off another 15 I'll be my 8th grade size. We shall see.

Robin

Gus, we missed you when the guitar discussions were taking place. Our daughter, 13, requested an electric guitar and what parent doesn't want to indulge that? She fell in love with a Gretsch 12 string, but really wanted something she could experiment more with.

There was a used Rickenbacker 12 string at the shop, but we didn't even let her try it.

Did Obama and Hillary notify Congress before offing Qaddafi?

Captain Hate

Apropos of nothing, when walking Teddy in the park yesterday I passed a concrete trash can when out popped a morbidly obese squirrel. The thing looked like a groundhog with a furry tail and just sat there. Teddy was somehow unaware of it and I wanted to keep it that way to prevent having to restrain 56 pounds of muscle. I kept looking back to make sure it was still there until we were out of sight. When we looped back later I heard this scratching inside the can and this time Teddy heard it too. It popped out and, noticing the dog was aware of it, waddled somewhat quickly to the closest tree. Holding the dog back being somewhat close to the car was less bothersome than having him on high alert throughout the walk, so that worked out well. The hawks have been awol this summer on controlling the population; according to some bird watchers they've been overly busy attacking each other including raiding a nest.

Captain Hate

That business about Qatar being where the drone launched from is fascinating. Do you know where JackStraw gets his info?

He says he gets everything from published reports available to anyone. I'll try to find a direct quote.

Here you go:

>>Do you really think it launched from Qatar, or do you think that's the psyop story they're putting out?

No idea, just going by initial media reports.

But I wouldn't be a bit surprised if significant pressure has been applied to Qatar by Trump/Pompeo. Qatar has been buying politicians and media for a long time to support their cause and I doubt it has gone unnoticed by Trump and team.

Time for choosing has arrived.

Old Lurker,

Every day at noon there is a pod cast on Periscope called "The Dilley Show." It's a young guy in Arizona (probably about mid-30's) who is a Trump supporter with a dose of common sense.

He always cheers me up and has a positive outlook on everything. The only thing that might give people pause is that he uses a lot of 4-letter words. Here is the link to his Friday show:

https://www.pscp.tv/w/1gqGvglORDqJB

I get discouraged from time to time, because life is not all peaches and cream.

However, I also realize that President Trump is a very unusual person that is good at keeping things to himself. For example, did you know he connected with the Evangelicals 14 years ago? When I heard that from the woman who introduced him yesterday, I was dumbfounded. I also didn't know (or had forgotten) about Pompeo delivering a warning letter to Iran at the beginning of the administration.

One of the reasons I am on Twitter is that I get more news through people who post there than I ever got from any of the news broadcasts. I have learned a lot, and one of the things I have learned is that Trump is far more patient than I am, willing to wait until he has everything in place before striking.

He is also willing to let idiots like Jim Acosta and Anderson Cooper think he is a dim bulb, because it suits his purposes.

Anyway, I hope you will give Dilley a try for a few days. He's on M-F at noon our time. I usually watch the replays in the afternoon. If you have questions I will be glad to answer them.

I told this story many years back. Mrs. OL and I have a favorite bar (attached to a nice restaurant) on Nantucket which features an old timer bartender known to all the long time residents. Whenever we entered the room, if he saw us first by the time we got to the bar, my G&T and her Chardonay would be waiting for us. Many many hours and great fun for many years.

When YL1 was just 21 and YL2 just under the same, we had the A-mom awakening when we took the girls there for dinner but stopped in the bar for a quick one before our dinner reservation. Imagine our shock when, when we got to the bar, Johnny had set up not only my G&T and Mrs. OL's Chard, but the two custom martini's he knew the girls liked.
