I will look for the link to the full monologue on You Tube, which should be up in a day or two.

I look forward to meeting all of you as we launch our campaign to defeat radical socialist Ilhan Omar.

Please join us at Day Block Brewing Company in Minneapolis on Monday, January 20th!

Anyone up that way know if he's a Republican or Democrat?

Porchlight,

Me, either. Nor would I be upset.

Zero support from the black community due to his abysmal treatment of them in South Bend. Few votes from the Hispanic community, either.

Trump has started calling him "Alfred E. Neuman" which is hilarious because it is TRUE, he looks just like him. Trump will demolish him in a debate.

In addition, the guy's name is hard to pronounce and he has a husband. He also dumped the Catholic Church for the Episcopalians, probably because they would do a gay marriage.

No one has looked into where he got his campaign money nor any of the other possible skeletons in his closet, either.

I don't watch film/movie award shows, or any award shows for that matter, mostly because I couldn't care less and I don't know who any of the people are. That notwithstanding, I read that Sam Mendes "beat out" Martin Scorsese for best director.

I adore Martin Scorsese for his production of The Age of Innocence. Wonderful film. On the other hand, what Sam Mendes did to two James Bond films with Daniel Craig is unforgivable, IMHO. (We will see "1917" though.)

That's the sum total of my input on the awards program. We did watch a video of Ricky Gervais. Quite a speech. Did everyone behave themselves, or did Hollywood go into political angst overdrive - yet again?

Not sure if this is behind the paywall, but Joe Lieberman has a WSJ op-ed supporting Trump's decision to take out Soleimani:

President Trump’s order to take out Qasem Soleimani was morally, constitutionally and strategically correct. It deserves more bipartisan support than the begrudging or negative reactions it has received thus far from my fellow Democrats.

The president’s decision was bold and unconventional. It’s understandable that the political class should have questions about it. But it isn’t understandable that all the questions are being raised by Democrats and all the praise is coming from Republicans. That divided response suggests the partisanship that has infected and disabled so much of U.S. domestic policy now also determines our elected leaders’ responses to major foreign-policy events and national-security issues, even the killing of a man responsible for murdering hundreds of Americans and planning to kill thousands more.

https://www.wsj.com/articles/the-democrats-and-iran-11578262553

The WSJ also had two editorials in yesterday's paper strongly supporting Trump on this.

reminder as to why it's over 150 billion, from poster at Althouse:

The "pallets of cash" of course were worth a lot more than their nominal value in funding Iran's undeclared asymmetrical war (AKA "terrorist activities") on the United States, but was small change in the amounts of money actually funneled to Iran.
Remember that the highly publicized $400 million on the "pallets of cash" were followed by $1.3 billion in "money transfers," less prominently publicized.
Then $150 billion "released," or whatever, with no publicity at all, but this was real money with which to finance the Iranian government and the regime's continued existence right up to today.

https://www.militarytimes.com/news/your-military/2020/01/05/iraqi-troops-killed-in-attack-by-isis-as-rockets-fall-in-green-zone-iraqis-say/

I expect we will see more ISIS attacks in Iraq. Our forces in Iraq have been stood down on ISIS. As I understand it we will not participate in the hunt for ISIS in Iraq, nor will we continue to train Iraqi forces for that effort.

I presume that ISIS will come to the conclusion that the American forces should be left alone so as not to provoke them. That will give them free rein to attack other, easier targets.

Let the PMF fight ISIS.

jim nj

Narciso,

There are reports of ISIS re-grouping in a no-mans-land near the Kurds. The latest attack was against Iraqi forces, not the Kurds.

I haven't heard of ISIS forces coming over the Syrian border elsewhere, but they may be.

I am reading about ISIS attacks in Syria. They seem to be small or small unit attacks. Motorcycle bombs. Car bombs. Assassinations. False checkpoints with stolen equipment and uniforms. Most of the attacks seem to be focused on the Kurd SDF forces.

I've seen reports of US forces shifted out of Iraq into Syria to go back into the hunt for ISIS. I don't know the strategy, but combine that with the US stand down in Iraq and ISIS may decide to seek safety on the Iraqi side of the border.

"Tehran has misjudged the U.S. administration’s doctrine of strategic realism rather than vice versa."

"Yet it is hard to see how Trump, if he is careful and selective in his responses to future Iranian escalations, will be damaged politically. His base, of course, and all Americans, quite rightly do not want another war even remotely resembling endless Middle East conflicts perceived as fought for great game dramas. But disproportionate one-off air responses in response to Iran’s future attacks would not require U.S. ground troops or likely not risk a general Middle East war. And they would do Iran’s assets real damage."

jim nj

https://www.nationalreview.com/2020/01/qasem-soleimani-killing-breaks-myth-iran-power/

"The targeted killing of Iranian Quds Force general Qasem Soleimani and a leading Iraqi militia leader has challenged the view that Iran is an all-powerful country that can strike terror throughout the Middle East region without repercussions to it and its leaders. "

jim nj

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_Iranian_Oil_Refining_and_Distribution_Company

I looked at this after the Saudi Aramco attack. The information here seems dated, but that may be due to a lack of recent investment in new facilities.

It seems that Iran exported more crude than it refined. For a while it was a gasoline importer, meaning that they were dependent on others for refining capacity to meet their motor fuel needs.

Lindsey Graham is arguing that the Iranian refineries should be in our target set in a possible reprisal.

Taking out, or damaging, the refineries would be a huge blow to the Iranian economy.

I thought that would be a good tit-for-tat response for the Aramco strike. It would grind the economy to a complete halt.

I've revised my opinion, taking out the refineries would disrupt the economy, but mostly at the expense of the common people.

I would keep the refineries on a possible target set, but at a much lower level.

I think the prime target set should be Iranian offensive missiles via cyber-warfare, EMP attack via drones or kinetic missile and bomb attacks.

Destroy the ability for Iran to project power. The next target set should be the IRGC Navy for the same reason. Take out the missiles to protect others from that offensive ability and then take out the Navy for the same reason.

Take away those two offensive capabilities and the only thing they have left are proxy forces for offensive actions.

Assuming we take away their offensive abilities the next target set should be launched on the forces of internal repression. The IRGC and Basji.

I'm just thinking that a proper strategy would not target the Iranian population, but would give them room for maneuver.
