I'm not seriously expected to watch this, am I?
However, I am curious whether Chief Justice Roberts would endorse this view about Senate trials and super-subpoenas:
“With the backing of a subpoena authorized by the chief justice of the United States, you can end President Trump’s obstruction,” said Representative Zoe Lofgren of California, the first woman in history to speak on the Senate floor as an impeachment manager.
Awkward, since the role of the chief justice has been presented as ceremonial. If Roberts rules the motion for a subpoena to be in order does that mean that, if an executive privilege claim reaches the Supreme Court he has already taken a position?
Or... does it mean that the subpoena applies to a person but does not automatically over-ride all privilege claims? For example, suppose Rudy Giuliani is a subpoenaed Senate witness. I presume he could answer some questions, cite attorney-client on some, and perhaps his Fifth Amendment non-incrimination right on others. That would represent compliance with the subpoena, unless the Senate wanted to take his privilege claims to court and get a ruing that he is in contempt of the Senate for failing to answer some questions. I think.
I am highly confident that CJ Roberts does not intend to get sucked into this foodfight.
BONUS FANTASY: If there is a merciful G*d in Heaven, or if the showrunners and scriptwriters have some character, we will have a moment where Rudy is asked by one of the House managers if he is trying to show contempt for Congress. PLEASE, let Rudy channel his inner Mae West and reply, "Sir, I'm trying to hide it."
I should live so long.
OK, I'll bite.

What to Watch for in the Impeachment Trial
1. That exact time when Adam Schiff's eyeballs finally stop bugging out
2. Lindsey Graham signalling his confederates in the gallery by exclaiming "Well, I swan!"
3. A large package of documents delivered from the White House, collected by President Trump over the last 2 1/2 years.
4. The Iranian business partner of Senator Elizabeth Warren's son-in-law, offered asylum.
That is for this morning. :)

Per that Paul Sperry article Ext cites above, there should be a military report somewhere noting Ciaramella's plans to target Trump dating back to Feb '17:
After Flynn briefed [the staff] about what ‘America first’ foreign policy means, Ciaramella turned to Misko and commented, ‘We need to take him out,’ ” the staffer recalled. “And Misko replied, ‘Yeah, we need to do everything we can to take out the president.’ “
Added the military detailee, who spoke on condition of anonymity: “By ‘taking him out,’ they meant removing him from office by any means necessary. They were triggered by Trump’s and Flynn’s vision for the world. This was the first ‘all hands’ [staff meeting] where they got to see Trump’s national security team, and they were huffing and puffing throughout the briefing any time Flynn said something they didn’t like about ‘America First.’ ”
He said he also overheard Ciaramella telling Misko, referring to Trump, ‘We can’t let him enact this foreign policy.’ “
Alarmed by their conversation, the military staffer immediately reported what he heard to his superiors.

The trick with those universal remotes is keeping all of the devices in sync on or off. Mine turns on say five boxes each time I hit POWER and that signals each box to flip its power switch the other way. The problem happens if, when turning off the system, I move the remote too soon so it does not send the IR signal to all the boxes. Then the next day, expecting to power them all on actually turns off the box or two that was still on from the night before. Then there is pure hell because each box has a different way of signalling that it is on or off. (Some have a red light that means "off" while others have a red light meaning "on".)
This is where my kids say "1% problems, Dad"...

I guess I'm dumb, because, were I a congressmen, my take on this would be: go ahead and make as many risk loans as you like, but we're not bailing you out again. You're not too big to fail.
Without the likelihood (guarantee, I suppose) of taxpayers covering their losses, banks wouldn't make loans that had a high probability of default.
Posted by: James D. | January 22, 2020 at 12:25 PM
If Hunter Biden is forced to testify what's the over/under for the number of times he will invoke the 5th amendment to avoid self-incrimination? James "Without the likelihood (guarantee, I suppose) of taxpayers covering their losses, banks wouldn't make loans that had a high probability of default."
Actually way before the taxpayers have to bail out the banks that made those loans, the real losers were the folks who bought the bonds secured by bundles of those bad loans. Do not let Mel or me start explaining derivatives, slices, tranches or credit insurance and reinsurance.

Posted by: henry | January 22, 2020 at 12:32 PM
OL, I'm guessing that buyers of those bonds don't have an easy way (or possibly any way?) of knowing exactly what the risk level of the mortgages backing them might be?
And that even if such information is available, it's probably not nearly as reliable as one might wish?
