I'm not seriously expected to watch this, am I?
However, I am curious whether Chief Justice Roberts would endorse this view about Senate trials and super-subpoenas:
“With the backing of a subpoena authorized by the chief justice of the United States, you can end President Trump’s obstruction,” said Representative Zoe Lofgren of California, the first woman in history to speak on the Senate floor as an impeachment manager.
Awkward, since the role of the chief justice has been presented as ceremonial. If Roberts rules the motion for a subpoena to be in order does that mean that, if an executive privilege claim reaches the Supreme Court he has already taken a position?
Or... does it mean that the subpoena applies to a person but does not automatically over-ride all privilege claims? For example, suppose Rudy Giuliani is a subpoenaed Senate witness. I presume he could answer some questions, cite attorney-client on some, and perhaps his Fifth Amendment non-incrimination right on others. That would represent compliance with the subpoena, unless the Senate wanted to take his privilege claims to court and get a ruing that he is in contempt of the Senate for failing to answer some questions. I think.
I am highly confident that CJ Roberts does not intend to get sucked into this foodfight.
BONUS FANTASY: If there is a merciful G*d in Heaven, or if the showrunners and scriptwriters have some character, we will have a moment where Rudy is asked by one of the House managers if he is trying to show contempt for Congress. PLEASE, let Rudy channel his inner Mae West and reply, "Sir, I'm trying to hide it."
I should live so long.

anonamom, I just typed a long comment about that Eli Lake Commentary article then deleted it -- he was so 'objective' -- made me want to stick a fork in his eye. The media is free of bias and not political-- or something, blah, blah, blah.
It made me sick with anger when I read this:
"In any case, the “deep-state” theory suggests there is a governmental hive mind, an unelected bureaucracy that runs things while officials like Comey sit on top, clueless and imagining themselves powerful.
"You can see how the “deep-state” theory might let the actual saboteurs off the hook. Comey, McCabe, Brennan, and others had a mix of motivations for making the decisions that they did. To say they were acting on behalf of an unelected bureaucracy is to absolve them."
Absolve them????????????

Joan, ridiculing the idea of a deep state is a great example of leftists always making a super-technical interpretation of something Trump says, i.e. taking him literally but not seriously. Every week we hear about federal employees saying they are working to bring down Trump from within

Jane,
I am way behind. I just saw your TV problem and maybe your Outdoor TV / remote issue had been resolved, but it sounds like a "source" issue to me. I'm guessing that you source is not set on the HDMI from the cable but is on Wifi or some other input? Hope this has already been resolved by the excellent brain trust here at JOM. May not be the issue but I will find out later tonight when I catch up.

Yes, John S, and how Lake could write such a long article, detailing all of the ways the FBI and members of the previous administration abused their position and our laws without Lake showing a bit of outrage is astounding.

Eli Lake is like Paul Mirengoff; they know the truth, but it might upset their little picnic so they only admit half of it so they can keep gnawin that drumstick and tater salad like everything's ok and there isn't a tornado headed their way.
Pretending the tools on top are oblivious rather than co-conspirators is a Goliath of a strawman but strawmen of any size don't fair too well in twisters.

I think only some of you read Gulliver's Travels by Swift in high school. First he meets the Liliputians (little people), then a host of others including the Brogdingnagians (giants), Laputians (people who carry all the words they need in actual form in satchels on their backs), Yahoos (ape-like people--basically what Swift thinks of ordinary people), and the Houyhnhyms (wise horses, better than people). When he returns to England at the end of his travels, he can't stand the stink of people and spends his time in the stables with the horses.

For some good news, I have signed a commitment letter with NIH for my overhead rates. There still are a couple of steps to go, but we are nearing the end.
There is a warning that the process can take "up to six months." Mine will take about 11 months.
In the mean time, I've essentially had to cover all of my overhead costs. These costs are real. Of course there is no way to recover my personal expense in covering them, though I can recover what was not paid earlier, and it really messes up my taxes.
