I did not see it, but my daughter tells me that in the latest episode Larry has lunch in the same restaurant where she and I went to dinner the other night.

Means nothing of course but it’s part of the fun of being in Santa Monica.

jimmyk

I briefly had a notion that Larry David and I might be related, as my mother comes from a long line of Davids. But it's not so uncommon a surname, so not that likely.

The Infamous Ignatz

A couple of times I tried Larry David's show Curb Your Enthusiasm.

I have never seen Curb Your Enthusiasm. I get the impression that it is about a cranky old man being annoyed as well as annoying. No point in watching that on TV.

I always thought Seinfeld was overrated. It had some good bits but Jerry in particular did not really do much for me.

I don’t think Larry David is much of an ideological type. As a NEw York Jew he is inclined to be liberal in a vague way but I sense from his body of work that his main preoccupation is social satire and not political commentary.

Another Bob

I share your view of Seinfeld BTW. The joke is not getting the joke?

Theo

Interesting historical note Dave.

A lot of people are under the impression that Dean lost BECAUSE of that scream. This is exactly backwards, he screamed because he finished third in Iowa despite earlier expectations of victory. It is true that the scream kept him from making a comeback but he was essentially toast by then. As the young people at the time said “dated Dean, married Kerry.”

I think there are parallels between that race on the Dem side and the 2020 primaries. No one seems to be actually enthusiastic about Biden, just as no one really wanted Kerry. The driving force behind their candidacies is the belief that they are the most electable. I sort of think that Biden is probably a better general election candidate than Sanders or Warren — not a high bar to clear. Not quite sure about Mayor Pete but he seems to be heading back to South Bend soon. I do think that Biden looks a lot like Kerry in terms of not really firing up anyone but just hoping that hatred of the incumbent is enough. It did not turn out to be the case in 2004, the only election since 1988 where the Republican won either a majority or even plurality of the popular vote.

Larry David's time in College Park partially overlapped mine. I'm positive our paths never crossed. Living in the dorms were a gazillion New Yorkers; at the time I thought they were the most obnoxious barely humans possible. It took visiting my daughters when they were in college starting in the late 90s to gain an appreciation for why New Yorkers are the way they are and actually lIke them. I wish one of them still lived there because I miss going there.

I disagree AB. He is smart and articulate and has positioned himself well.

You might want to check out an article by John Harris at Politico about Pete called “Portrait Of A BS Artist As A Young Man.” There is no doubt a segment of the Dem base that hates him for reasons having nothing to do with sexual orientation.

https://www.npr.org/2020/01/14/795961381/racist-housing-practices-from-the-1930s-linked-to-hotter-neighborhoods-today

Clearly they have confused the cause and effect, but if they really want to play the race card for urban heat islands let's remind them when red-ling started. It began in 1934 under the Democratic FDR administration. So maybe they are correct and it's the Democrat's fault.

Yes I get your point. But assume for the moment the following:

1. You get to pick the next president. BUT

Barbara

Totally off topic, but in fairness I'd like to say something in favor of the Markle-Sussexes. While I agree with all the negative responses they received of late and have made a few of my own as well, I saw a recent photo of the couple that made me think there may be another side to the question.

In that recent photo, Meghan was wearing a somewhat shapeless skirt and top, and holding a coat over her right arm placed in front of her. It struck me what she may have been trying to do. She was using a universal technique to hide the fact that she hadn't lost the 'baby weight'. I believe that Royal ladies are supposed to resume "their duties" six months after delivery. She's not ready to do that.

I've tried to put myself in the place of this relatively newly married couple with a new baby. It's not easy under the best of circumstances as every woman knows. In the case of this couple, it's most likely very difficult. Like most women, Meghan would want to look her very best before assuming all the very public appearances that go with her job. My guess, and it's only a guess, is that she said, "Screw this," or something to that effect. "I'm not a machine. I don't like how I look or feel. I'm a brand new mother at 38 years of age. This is extremely difficult for me and my husband and for our baby as well. I wasn't born to this business. I need a break!"

Now, there are counter arguments to all of that such as 1) she and her husband didn't have to set up shop to monetize their position in his family and 2) her husband didn't have to "pitch" her to Disney executive Igner in the tawdry way that he did. However, she was an actress and although the comparison is not equal, even Princess Grace wanted to return to acting early on in her marriage.

That's all. I still favor the Queen and applaud her strength in resolving the conflict. Nonetheless, perhaps the tacky Sussexes had a reason for their exit beyond what is apparent at this time. It may turn out to be a win/win for all.

clarice

theo let's think this thru--maybe pete could get a lot of the coastal urban and student vote. He won't get vets, religious folks, stockbrokers, farmers, ranchers, gun owners, small business owners ,accountants or anyone who can do math. Women won't come out in big numbers cause Dem women want a woman more than they want Pete. Bernie voters will stay home out of pique. And Trump will swallow him whole in a presidential debate.

clarice

Nytol

Barbara

you MUST pick one of Biden, Sanders, Warren or Buttigieg

Theo,

If a gun is held to my head and I'm backed against a wall with no option of escape, I'd have to choose {YIKES} Warren.

1) Biden is far too old, decrepit, disgusting, and steeped in criminal activities.
2) Sanders is far too old and a committed Marxist/Socialist.
3) Buttigieg is too inexperienced. He doesn't have a record that tells us much except that he's a progressive democrat, virtually unqualified for the job, can't be trusted and has a weird name.

That leaves the delightful dimwit Warren.

Like I said, ONLY if I had a gun to my head!

Another silly study:

https://phys.org/news/2020-01-ozone-depleting-substances-late-20th-century-arctic.html

Ozone-depleting substances caused half of late 20th-century Arctic warming, says study

I've always been a skeptic about the ozone hole theory. Be that as it may, with this new claim they aver that this effect acted as a supplement to the effects of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere - not a substitute?

"They thus acted as a strong supplement to carbon dioxide, the most pervasive greenhouse gas; their effects have since started to fade, as they are no longer produced and slowly dissolve."

So this process accounted for half of the warming as a supplement? Then carbon dioxide is only half as active as they thought it was, right?

I never should have taken that course in Logic.

Analysis Lebanon Protesters May Topple the Government, but Not the Regime

Young Iraqis and Lebanese oppose the corruption of the ruling class and are tired of governments that operate on ethnic lines – but can they offer an alternative leadership?

Maybe the protestors can't provide new governments, but they seem, with even more energy now, to be hell bent on preventing Iran from installing new governments in their countries.

Theo

Barbara —

Thank you for at least answering the question. I would answer it differently but I respect your choice and analysis. I totally agree that it would be a gun to the head kind of situation

clarice —

I appreciate your analysis on why Pete would not win the general election. I assume, perhaps incorrectly, that you feel the same about every other Dem candidate, which is that they all will lose to Trump.

But that is not the question that I asked you to address. Once again, assume that YOU have the sole and exclusive power to pick the next president and it does not matter what stockbrokers or farmers or women other than yourself or young people (other than yourself of course) want, it’s your call. BUT you must pick one of Sanders, Warren, Biden or Buttigieg. No other option including none of the above.

Who would you pick?

KK —

I don’t think bigotry is an issue. There are lots of reasons to not like Pete.

For me, his sexual orientation is a non issue. If there were a candidate who had the right policies and the right character I would support them, without any regard to whether they were gay or not. It is just irrelevant to me.

https://www.washingtonexaminer.com/opinion/time-to-bury-bashar-assads-economy

Blow-back from Lebanon and Iran.

"First, the recent introduction of new U.S. sanctions that have restricted Syria's access to global financial networks — and foreign currency. Second, growing disruptions to Lebanon's economy due to that nation's protest movement. Lebanon is a top conduit for illicit dollar flows into Syria. Third, the evaporation of Syria's capital reserves after nine years of civil war. Fourth, Iran's inability to keep subsidizing Syria's currency reserves due to its own pressure under U.S. sanctions."

Warfare by economic means.

My take on this is that anybody of importance in Syria moved their money to Lebanon and now can't get it back. I'm pretty sure the money is still there in dollar-denominated accounts, but without physical dollars to distribute, the accounts are, in effect, suspended.

If Assad, Iran and Russia achieve a military victory by taking Idlib Province I suspect a lot of the fighters will just slip away to fight another day somewhere else in Syria.

In the meantime, Syria will be an economic carcass of a country with no funds available for re-building.

Enter the Powell Rule for Iran and Russia. You broke it, you own it, you fix it.

jim nj

No, Kev, you're too smart to fall for that climate hype, but lots of people are and reporters are useless for reporting on these revelations.

jim nj

In NJ the proposed plastic bag ban has failed in the legislature. No vote taken, some behind the scenes thing. Maybe, despite the pressure from interest groups, somebody realized the people wouldn't like this.

You know it seems to be a common tactic of interest groups to go after liberal municipalities for city-wide bans of something and then try to parlay that into a state law.

2nd Amendment groups seem to have taken notice of this and have adopted the same tactic. I wonder how many issues conservative groups could use the same Alinsky tactics on.

As I’ve written before, while Buttigieg is bright, intellectually agile, and served his country, he’s also someone who’s only real political asset is that he’s gay. Take away the gay and you’re left with a white, two-term mayor of a mid-sized American city that has an outsized crime rate and a local black community that’s extremely hostile to him. This hostility has spread to blacks across America. Buttigieg’s neither a statesman nor an executive. He’s the high school class valedictorian who thinks he’s special because he’s the teachers’ pet.
