Interesting article from a source I normally wouldn't post from:

https://www.vox.com/energy-and-environment/2020/1/15/21058051/climate-change-building-materials-mass-timber-cross-laminated-clt

Mass timber is a laminate much like plywood only much, much thicker. Kind of like building a log cabin, or Amish barn, out of squared off beams of pieces of trees glued together. Stronger than a solid log or a squared post or beam fashioned from a single log.

I'm a fan of "This Old House" so "engineered lumber" is a concept I'm familiar with. You can create a load-bearing beam out of composite wood chips or plies with solid footers and headers. And it's lighter and stronger than steel.

jim nj

Iggy,

You're the lumber guy, right? Or am I mistaken?

I wonder if it's possible that there is a use for all the dead garbage wood that accumulates in mis-managed forests to be mixed with fresh wood veneers.

Any thoughts on the VOX article?

jim nj

https://www.washingtonexaminer.com/policy/defense-national-security/special-operations-marines-to-call-for-end-of-iconic-machine-gun-m2-ma-deuce-soon-will-be-replaced

"ma-deuce" is the .50 caliber machine gun in use for nearly 90 years. It and its ammo are heavy.

From other sources I've found that they are also thinking of using polymer bullets which weigh much less.

My limited knowledge of firearms suggests that a lighter bullet would do less damage due to its lighter mass. Yet I'm thinking that a lighter bullet would travel a lot faster and be less effected by gravity.

Maybe this is just a special forces thing, but if it is, I can easily understand that a lighter weapon with a lighter bulk ammo weight would be useful.

I'm trying to follow the logic of being the tip of the spear. Lighter weapon. More ammo for the weight. Yeah, this makes sense, more holes in more people for the same weight.

Morning Jim. That teaching thing does not surprise me. If you want cookie cutter “diversity” in employment, you need across the board mediocrity in labor supply. As in don’t let anyone get good at it. Standard industrial union approach.

Interesting perspective. Long Island and upstate NY voters aren't as liberal as NYC voters. NY would actually be a red state if it wasn't for all the urban blue enclaves.

Even as a young person, when I was being taught, I sought to think for myself. Thankfully my parents encouraged that.

Nowadays that might be a more difficult thing.

We have teachers who have been trained up the same ways, going through similar curriculum's. They report to administrators with the same biases. All of whom know how to "teach" with no mastery of the subject knowledge.

So we look to school boards for oversight and who runs for those elections. Normal people? No, they are not qualified because they don't have an education degree.

I'm a teacher in another district, but you can rely on me to vote fairly on the next teacher union contract up for negotiation in our district.

Tammany Hall would be awestruck at the graft-weaving.

henry

Jim, when I was in grad school (seeking PhD) the switch from individual excellence to group grope was just starting. That was 30 years ago. As rse documents, it is fully baked in now. The article you linked is a reminder the old ways work much better.

henry

A brisk 6 out, I guess I’ll take my peach mint frozen.

jim nj

Henry,

What we need is a real student's union. Not the college liberal thing where we are amazed by their impeccable knowledge that causes us to want to lower the voting age to 15.

We need an el-hi student union with the power to fire biased teachers. If 15 year-olds know what's up, so do 9 year-olds.

F*ck the union teachers. Let the children vote them out.

Parents can vote on the budget, let the kids vote on everything else. Instead of paying union dues to secure teacher's jobs, let them use that money for campaigning for student votes.

rse

The group emphasis also promotes the important goal of reaching a shared understanding of any given topic. That was also a huge component of that Amitai Etzioni usurpation of the term 'patriotism' to mask the widespread communitarian agenda being pushed by basically every think tank I encounter.

I linked to that yesterday on previous thread toward the end.

This is good. https://www.spectator.co.uk/2020/01/warring-windsors-the-real-royal-conflict-is-between-charles-and-his-sons/

It's not that I care about the sussexes or the windsors. It's simply that the decline of elderly parents can bring out familial dysfunction that can be a lot to process. Especially if seeing what has not yet happened but likely will and why is a strong suit. Now I get to mull the implications of what has been said and done.

Another Bob

Rse, I think “prop” is exactly how that kid is being used. It seems a common use case for a kid by the Hollyweird types looking for a little more pub or sympathy.

I feel badly for the kid. Being born into what’s become a fairly dysfunctional family, but now without the prime advantages of it; with two parents utterly unsuited for life in the real world. Doesn’t seem as if it can end well for him.

jim nj

Current state of the US educational system. A system wherein the primary consumers have absolutely no input.

I can't think of any other industry that could survive such a situation.

These poor kids are consigned to a freaking penal system. And if you can't conform, we'll drug you and confine you to an isolation unit where you will be subjected to re-education.

Apologies for being caustic. I think 40 years of educational theory development is about as useful as 40 years worth of climate science.

Robin, Tiger Beat Pompom Girl REHAB Team

The gig was up when parents were no longer allowed to request particular teachers for their kids in elementary school. We ALL know who the better teachers are. We had a particularly huge ability gap between two teachers when my daughter was in 3rd grade, and one family went so far as to issue financial threats to the district to get their son moved out of the dysfunctional teacher's classroom mid-year.

My daughter was in the stellar teacher's class; he was paired with this teacher with the goal of bringing her up to standard, but he said by October it was clear that she would never have the skills. So her class of 24 lost an entire year of education because the district couldn't fire her for incompetency. I use this as an example any time people start complaining that teachers are underpaid.

jim nj

One of the great skills of young children is that they can disagree without hating. They may wonder about each other, but it's the bullies they watch out for.

With the anonymity of the internet the picked-upon become the bullies. They never fought back in real-life, but learned the tactics.

Captain Hate

you MUST pick one of Biden, Sanders, Warren or Buttigieg

This is the false choice the GOP made book on post Reagan and the Golden Scalpweasel has blown up. I'm done with voting for the least worst candidate forever. Both of the wings of the Uniparty need to be reacquainted with the fact that they need to market their candidates effectively at least to their respective bases or risk getting no support and losing their reason for existing. I've already done this on the state level and am willing to do this nationally starting in 2024.

Robin, Tiger Beat Pompom Girl REHAB Team

That Markle/baby photo shoot is the kind of celebrity bs I hate. Like those two guys wouldn't be helping her with the dogs if the cameras weren't around. There's no way that Meghan can pick up poop, support the baby, and keep the dogs in line at the same time. Her PR person should be fired.

Another Bob

Jim, that’s become an unfortunate pattern.

People in certain what should be fundamentally straightforward jobs (like teacher) get the idea they should be “professionals”, and begin developing an opacity that serves to build and protect the guild. And exclude their primary customers.

Remember when HR departments were essentially clerks? Same deal. And now they’re the gatekeepers of the entire enterprise.

Captain Hate

Public schools are little Stalinist enclaves who actively resent any efforts of the taxpayers to have input in the way they do things.

Another Bob

But Robin, the impression sought is that she is doing all of that - just like normie moms.

Robin, Tiger Beat Pompom Girl REHAB Team

Buttigieg would never have gained traction without being gay. When he declared his candidacy, his website HAD NO POLICY POSITIONS listed. None. There was no way for the general public to ascertain where he stood on issues.

Think that was an accident? Ha. No. They wanted to make sure the discussion was about him being gay, that the country wasn't ready to elect a gay president. It was to excite the base and keep them on that rather than his positions and his track record. Even moderate democrats, of which I know a few, got that.

jim nj

I might want to refine my remarks on my last post, but

Nytol

sbwaters

Anon, Mrs. sbw has a different perspective. In her neighborhood, a school is a refuge for what is happening in the rest of their lives, providing some stability.

Robin, Tiger Beat Pompom Girl REHAB Team

Normie moms know that the two well built guys hanging back are taking the dogs as soon as the cameras are turned off.

They are also picking up poop. Markle and her team are delusional. And incompetent. If you want to look like a mom who can do the impossible, at least have the baby carrier properly fitted before taking pictures.

Another Bob

“financial threats to the district”

How exactly did that work?

Robin, Tiger Beat Pompom Girl REHAB Team

SBW, that is true for a lot of neighborhoods, which makes incompetent teachers all the worse.

Robin, Tiger Beat Pompom Girl REHAB Team

A-Bob,

Nobody knows. The principal was very tight-lipped about the whole situation, and someone who is very close to her slipped that detail at a party while everyone was trying to figure out how they pulled it off.

It is a big district with 8 elementary schools. This particular family lived outside of the district lines by a half-mile and paid full tuition for their son, so maybe that had something to do with it.

Another Bob

“Normie moms know...”

At some level, sure, most likely do. But the image resonates, particularly with that most revered group - the “single mom”.

Captain Hate

a school is a refuge for what is happening in the rest of their lives, providing some stability.

So is it time to re-examine the function of a school and stop pretending you can successfully mix children from stable and dysfunctional families?

Ch, you can pose that to the Mrs. if you make it to the Rochester Catsmeat foray. I’ll listen. :-)

MissMarple2

My children were fortunate in that in the suburban township where they went to school the system was viewed as a very desirable one to teach, and somehow job openings began to be passed from good teachers to friends in other districts. No union.

I also had the advantage of coming from 2 generations of old-school teachers who were well-known in the community so that if I had a question or problem, teachers listened to me.

Things have probably deteriorated since my daughter graduated and I just hate reading about how schools have become indoctrination centers.

Captain Hate

Thats a hot topic with me, sbw, and one my wife and I don't see eye to eye on at all. School meal programs, for one, only subsidize bad behavior. Can't feed your children with all the existing social programs? Not my problem and shouldn't use tax money allegedly for education. Likewise allowing children to get to school late and suffer no repercussions because that would negatively impact their funding which is all those leeches care about.

We should probably talk about other things because I don't need a four hour drive for arguments under my roof.

Our district is large - 8 elementary schools, 2 middle schools, 1 high school, and an alternative ms/hs (started in the 70's and thus far grandfathered in, though many in the district would opt to defund).

Teacher positions are the lowest paid in the area, due to the high number of aides/adults required by the teachers' union in the classroom. Surrounding districts opt for paying teachers more with less assistance in the classroom.

CH, I would like to see districts have more autonomy, but here in NY we are held hostage by Albany's regulations and mandates, which are designed more for NYC and environs than upstate needs. While it is the excuse our school board makes every time they make an unpopular decision, it is a great deal of our administrative costs in running the district. I don't foresee that changing any time soon.

Interestingly, last year, a grassroots effort forced a longtime school board member off the board, replaced by an actual parent with young kids in the district. She has been asking a lot of uncomfortable questions, yet you can already hear her justifying certain expenditures. It's a good lesson in how the swamp turns an outsider into a swamp denizen.

Most states have stripped school boards of authority over anything but overall budget and which super to hire. They also control which lawyers can do school board work and in my state the association of those approved lawyers is a subsidiary of the association of school supers. My old post explaining that stripping had school board members all over my state emailing me thanks for figuring it out because they had been told they were not allowed to reveal to voters and parents.

Then if you do get elected, the lawyers or accreditors or both do training or leadership weekends to tell new member they have a duty to reach a consensus with fellow school board members or accreditation is at risk.

I am not speculating here. Years ago someone invited me to a training session for prospective school board members and legislators. I listened asked, follow up questions, and then wrote about it. People in other states have since reached out confirming similar situations throughout the country as the essence is no one can stop the template this time.

Since zettajoules are readily translatable into degrees of temperature Willis did so and the result was in the past 60 years the top two kilometers of the oceans have gained an average of 1/10 of a degree centigrade which means in about 3 centuries they will have warmed 1 degree centigrade.
He also skewered their confidence in their figures when they claimed an error of +/- .003 degrees, when the buoys used to record the temps are only accurate to +/-.6 degrees.

When you have already lost the game by agreeing to play:

Fox: "Republicans looking to counter the Green New Deal are planning a climate change proposal of their own, taking a multi-pronged approach to improving the environment.

The effort, according to Axios, is being spearheaded by House Minority Leader Rep. Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif., alongside Reps. Garret Graves, R-La., and Bruce Westerman R-Ark."

--I wonder if it's possible that there is a use for all the dead garbage wood that accumulates in mis-managed forests to be mixed with fresh wood veneers.--

It's not economical to try and used down wood for anything. The best thing to do is broadcast burn when conditions are right. It's not really the ground level wood that is the problem with fires but the mid level trees. They are what more readily translate a beneficial ground fire into a destructive crown fire by serving as a ladder to the dominant crown trees. That's what thinning aims to reduce both by removing many of the mid growth trees and increasing the space between the remaining ones.
Logging these days is so mechanized that except in big timber the whole tree is pulled in from the forest to be cut into logs and the rest either chipped and trucked for particle board or co-gen use or burnt in situ.
