CNN’s Cooper: Weaponizing Military ‘Next Step’ for Trump to Turn U.S. into Banana Republic

While discussing the Department of Justice is dropping its investigation into former FBI Deputy Director Andrew McCabe, Copper said, “It fits into the larger theme of weaponizing the Department of Justice against perceived enemies or just people the president doesn’t like.”

He continued, “There was a transcript released today in which the judge in this case previously told Justice Department attorneys that the handling of the case was disturbing in the judge’s words and getting close to a banana republic. Do you agree?”

McCabe said, “I absolutely agree. That’s one of the things that concerns me most about not just the president, but the way that the Justice Department has handled these matters that are clearly so important to this president. We don’t expect to live in a country where the previewed political enemies of the president suddenly become the subjects of criminal investigations in a pursuit to throw political enemies in jail.”

[ahem]

Cooper said, “Our system is set up, you know, in a very well-thought-out way with checks and balances. But when you start to look at what has gone on, you know, the president has —they’ve packed the courts with a lot of judges. You know, it hasn’t got a lot of attention over the last couple of years, but they’ve been very successful in getting a huge number of judges appointed by the president. Obviously, the Senate is not standing up to the president. At least, the Republicans in the Senate are afraid, clearly, of the blowback of contradicting this president. Mitt Romney is now a case study in what can happen if you do. There’s the Justice Department, which now seems to be weaponized.”

He continued, “I mean, the next step, I guess, is sort of weaponizing the military in some way. You know, talking about steps towards a banana republic. That is essentially the next step.”

McCabe said, “It is. And it’s frightening to think through these potential developments, but when you look back on the recent past and the experiences we’ve had as a nation, you can’t help but be very concerned for our future.”

Extraneus,

I am ready to disband both the FBI and CIA, who seem to be running their own programs.

I also would put a 5-year moratorium on any government intelligence agent, CIA or FBI, accepting a job with a television news network.

joan

I don't usually bother with other people's comments that try and prove a point, but this one sort of got to me:

Theo,Feb. 15, 2:11 a.m.: "Once again, I respect that a distinction can be made between the two cases. They are not absolutely identical. But I think that the most likely reason that someone would favor prosecution of one and not the other is partisanship — in other words the desire for a two tiered justice system."

When I read this I immediately thought "rubbish". Everything the average person hears about the law and justice, explained to us over and over again by prosecutors or defense attorneys -- and I'm not talking about Law & Order or other television shows, I'm talking about cases that grab national attention and/or just local attention -- is that motive counts. Motive is taken into consideration.

So, Theo, you love to debate arcane and/or minute points of a discussion. That's fine. It's your right. But you can't have justice or people's motives on jom defined as how you view purported crimes because you are an 'impartial' attorney, a legal scholar, a sociologist and educator. It doesn't work that way. Right's right. Wrong's wrong. Jury nullification.

Whatever.

Former FBI Deputy Director Andrew McCabe said Friday on CNN that Fox News was “propaganda,” while reacting to the news that the Department of Justice was dropping its investigation into him.

Anchor Anderson Cooper said, “Aside from being understandably anger about all of what you’ve been through, has it been in a way surreal? In the past couple of minutes, while you’ve been on with me, on Fox, there’s a banner font calling you a liar. Did you ever expect in any way to be dealing with anything like this?”

McCabe said, “I spent 21 years in the FBI as the part of an institution that prides itself on fidelity, braver, andy and integrity. And to be removed from that organization and unfairly branded a liar because that was the desired outcome by the president has just been one of the most sickening and demeaning experiences of my life. It’s horrendous. And it is unfortunate that having listened to propaganda like Fox News, there’s, you know, there are many people in this country that will believe that forever. I can’t do anything about that, except continue to live and to speak out in the way I’ve tried to do over the last year, to stand up for what I believe in, and to tell the truth, however inconvenient for the president or anybody else.”

Italy: Salvini Facing Show Trial For "Kidnapping" Migrants

The Italian Senate has voted to strip former Interior Minister Matteo Salvini of parliamentary immunity so that he can face kidnapping charges for refusing to allow migrants to disembark from a ship at a port in Sicily.

If Salvini, who leads the anti-mass-migration party, Lega (League), is found guilty, he faces a ban on holding political office and up to 15 years in prison. He has said that he acted in Italy's national interest and that the charges against him are politically motivated, aimed at silencing criticism of the country's open-door migration policy.

Under Italian law, ministers enjoy immunity for actions taken while in office — unless the Senate votes to lift that protection. On February 12, the Italian Senate voted 152-76 in favor of lifting Salvini's immunity, after a parliamentary committee on January 21 recommended the action.

In December, the Court of Ministers in Catania, Sicily, ruled that Salvini should be indicted for "aggravated kidnapping" for depriving 131 migrants onboard the Gregoretti coastguard ship of their liberty by refusing to allow them to disembark. The incident, which occurred over a four-day period in July 2019, was part of Salvini's "closed ports" policy against illegal immigration and an attempt to force EU member states to share the burden of mass migration.

Ok folks I have a question about the Flynn thing that has bothering me for 3 years now.

During the whole Plame Kerfuffle, we all got told all sorts of stuff about how classified information should be handled. A bedrock principle which distinguishes information which is protected and information which is not —according to both law and common sense — is “need to know”. There is no such thing as a classified gossip fest where people with security clearances are allowed to sit around and chatter about any and every secret that they know. Where people whose jobs give them need to know particular classified things get to include those things in idle chitchat with random other folks with security clearances, even though those folks work in completely different areas unrelated to those particular classified things.

But all of the descriptions that I have read of the Flynn “FBI interview” have these two FBI guys chit-chatting with Flynn to put him at ease. So WTF was Flynn doing talking about his weeks-past conversation with a foreign ambassador AT ALL when this was supposed to be a planning meeting about future coordination with the FBI in the upcoming administration?

On the flip side, if there WAS some legitimate purpose to the questions, there is the whole question of the purpose of the US government recording a high official’s conversations with a foreign official. Isn’t one huge reason that the government spends large sums of taxpayer money on recording technology and data management systems and human analysts and specialists is so that the high official has an army of subordinates who are being paid to keep track of every little detail of what the officials said to each other? If Flynn told Pence something that was inaccurate, wasn’t it the peons’ JOB to catch this and alert both of them ASAP so that the Pence AND Flynn wouldn’t be trying to carry out foreign policy based upon Flynn’s inaccurate memory?

These things are TOOLS and very expensive tools. The reason that humans use tools to do things is that it is harder without the tool. How can you call it “lying” when a human being tells you something happened a certain way when he knows you have access to a record much better than any human memory? If I’m talking to my airlines frequent flier program because I didn’t get credit for my flight to Seattle, they can’t say that I lied about “flying” because I can’t flap my arms and fly like a bird. If Flynn is talking about a conversation with a couple of counter-intel pros that he knows have access to the recordings of the conversation, why shouldn’t he expect that if he mis-remembers something and they notice that they would do anything other than remind him of what he forgot? THAT’S THEIR FREAKIN JOB!!!

Narciso

The Infamous Ignatz

Probably should have but couldn't let this pass from Theo last thread;

--In any event, I personally do not feel morally superior to the run of the mill prog.--

You may be correct in that assessment. As for me I would seriously reconsider every position I held if I didn't feel morally superior to people who celebrate killing babies, want to strip us of our political freedoms and destroy the magnificent constitutional republic we inherited, want to steal their neighbors wealth and property for their own benefit, want to strip us of our economic freedoms and our ability to defend ourselves from criminals and tyrants, who wish to destroy the nuclear family and indoctrinate our children and make as many people wards of the state as they possibly can and who have taken on the project of destroying the great moral edifice of Western Civilization.
That you don't feel morally superior to such people should concern you as much as it does me.

-- I think that I have better policy ideas for how society should be organized than they do. But that is politics and not morality.--

This is when I have a hard time not calling you things; when you state something so obviously either ingenuous or so full of blithering idiocy that either you really are simply a concern troll or some nurse is feeding you your cream o' wheat while you're typing.
Aren't you the guy who says politics is downstream of culture? Do you really think there is no moral component to the formation of cultures? Politicians and politics produce laws. Is there no moral component to laws and therefore politics?
Has a serious thought ever crossed your mind? That kind of statement makes Barack Hussein look like Thomas Aquinas in contrast.

--I think that you are factually wrong about the IG’s referral on McCabe.--

Factually wrong? My comments on him were 'was what he did illegal' and asking you for a citation that he was entitled to leak what he did. How can one be factually wrong when asking others for the facts on which they base their statements?

You are one odd and possibly one concerned duck.

GUS

But carbs are stored as body fat and lead to increased cholesterol readings.
That's my understanding of the theory, anyway.

Jim,SunnyvaleCA,USA

I'm another not impressed with Theo's posts.
He seemed to be arguing for the existence of equivalence of Left/right beliefs.
While this matches the Scott Adams "watching two different movies" metaphor, in fact it seems unarguable that there's no equivalence. Instead, there are two systems of justice and two unequal modes of media coverage/investigation.

As you probably know, the Stanford marching band is apparently a ragtag bunch that don’t take the whole thing too seriously. So, apparently Stanford played ND in the very last game at their old stadium. At the last minute, mom is snagged and coerced into getting out on the field and to pretend she is part of the band. Hilarity ensues. I think there is incriminating video to prove the caper.

Theo:

"And I will again say that I think Lt Gen Flynn was treated disgracefully by the FBI."

That admission alone destroys your analogy, it's not just a minor stipulation to be gotten out of the way. One can certainly not make that claim about McCabe. Flynn pled guilty. McCabe never had to offer a plea.

To make your analogy work you also have to ignore the most salient elements affecting the views you've been critiquing here. You will not entertain the possibility that the prosecution made it clear Flynn's son would suffer if Flynn refused to plead guilty. The fact that I find such a charge plausible has nothing to do with rightwing/leftwing perspective. I believe I am not alone here in my concerns about prosecutorial misconduct and prosecutorial overreach, and plea bargaining in particular, as a systemic problem, not just a DC problem. In order for your argument work, you must arbitrarily remove any purported threat from your equation completely, but that doesn't make it disappear as a consideration affecting the conclusions of others.

When it comes to DC, the idea that Flynn was targeted for purely political reasons is also a legitimate concern. In the world of politics that is a problem which seems to affect Republicans disproportionately. Where is the analogy to Sen. Stevens from Alaska, for example? A corrupt prosecution which dramatically affected national political outcomes? Ditto for Tom Delay I believe. That's before you even get to government spawned targeting of Trump, and quite possibly others along with him.

However, if you want to claim the two cases are analogous, then the difference in how they were handled is a flagrant example of the unequal justice. I personally think that if we saw more people like McCabe facing charges, folks on the right might be less disturbed by what has happened to Flynn. If the two offenses are the same, why does one man lose his job, while the other faces jail as well as losing his job and his assets? Is internal corruption within law enforcement itself not ultimately more dangerous than a "process" crime which would never have been committed save for governmental manipulation? Who pressured McCabe into his lie? Where is the Republican analogy to Hillary Clinton and alll her minions being accorded get out of jail free cards without even having to defend themselves? How is it possible that Lois Lerner simply got to "retire" with her pension intact from the IRS?

I'm just not seeing the mirror images here! I see you struggling to construct one, where one does not naturally exist. It's the disparities, and politicized prosecutions and what amounts to government sponsored harassment, that are at the heart of rightwing attitudes about Flynn. Republicans and Democrats are not mirror images of each other, however comforting a concept that might be. They are not just polar opposites either. Their philosophies are categorically different beasts. Whether or not there are well meaning liberals (and I know plenty) is not the issue here.

The Infamous Ignatz

Look at that picture of McCabe at MM's 10:26 link.

eat better. snacking will overload the digestive system and can impose poor food combinations into the stomach depriving the EATER of nutrients due to incomplete digestion. meal discipline is key. see #1.

digest well. allow the body time to digest the day's food. reducing intake and ending solid food intake well before 6pm will allow digestion to end.

getting optimal nutrients from digestible meals will reorder the monkey mind's EATING associations to want snacks of any kind.

big challenge to reorder EATING associations from urges and "needs"for PLEASURE,COMFORT, SATIETY, LOVE,ANXIETY, "BELONGING" and other " must-haves."

it's a bitch but neccesary. if we don't we deprive our bodies of a full dual enzymatic cycle--- digestion AND repair.

in most American diets enzymes are almost always dedicated to digestive function. so long as the body is digesting food well into the sleep cycle the body can't redirect those same enzymes to repairing its major systems.

eat less during a shorter time window. mine is 10a to 4pm. i make rare allowances popularly referred to as "cheats." the longer i've worked on this the easier it gets.

most importantly, underperforming in 1-2-3 deprives the EATER of "liver time" which is when the liver engages in cleansing and repair. a complete dual enzymatic cycle is the key to liver health and longevity.

carbs kill as our favorite medico is correct in saying. add to that one more key which is the 1-2-3.

a new eating rythm will make keto a renewal process. i hope i've done justice to explaining how snacking figures into the TIMING and VOLUME of EATING one does.

Still alive because of these simple insights which were not easy finds.

Bless you, Hermano. i'm glad you're goingcfor it!

Jane,

Went to pick up my Kroger grocery order and heard that news about Bloomberg saying he might pick Hillary as VP. I do not want her anywhere near the election or the White House. Yikes!

Also, in a mix-up that has happened due to both a faulty app and new cultures immigrating into our area, I wound up with 6 plantains instead of 6 bananas. One cannot make plantain cream pie, as I told the gal at the office when I asked about exchanging. She said that they are listed as bananas/plantains on the app. Why it hasn't been corrected yet she didn't know. The young guy who pulled my order wouldn't have thought to call and ask, since I have a weird, foreign-sounding first name.

My daughter wants to get a couple of things so is going to exchange them for me. I guess under "Special Instructions" on the order page I am going to have to type "I WANT BANANAS" from now on. Grrrr.

I suppose this explains narciso's earlier mysterious post about Eikenrode--Van Graek is working with the US Atty reviewing the Flynn case.

"Andrew McCabe Admits Top NatSec Officials Plotted Coup Against Trump"

From Jane's link @12:46pm

Okay. We knew this. We also knew this:

More than once, Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein offered to wear a wire into the White House to attempt to record incriminating conversations with the president. McCabe said this was an idea he took seriously and discussed with FBI lawyers.

There goes your hero, Tom R.

What's next, Mr. Barr?

A follow up from my brief comment a few days ago about listening to both sides of your brain. Every winter after all the holiday stuff is done, we usually break out a jigsaw puzzle or two. One of the quiet brain lessons that always comes out of this activity is the repeated pattern that reveals itself each mini session at the puzzle. After the initial drudge of getting all the pieces spread out and sorted and building the border, a cycle repeats itself. You’ve walked away from the last mini session at a standstill of not finding anything that fits. When you come back after a break, you randomly reach out and pick up a piece and without any overt thought reach over and immediately put it in the correct place. Often you can repeat that 2-3 more times with no conscious thought. By that point your brain kicks into its normal mode and you might get a few more pieces in with the usual mental efforts of matching shape and color elements until you hit the wall and walk away. Rinse, repeat.

From back in "The Apprentice" days (when NBC though he was cool because he made them millions), and keeping with the weekend's racing theme (video at the link):
