Putin may or may not be a master of Seventh Dimensional Chess but right now he's just having fun playing 52 Pick-Up.
Bernie Sanders briefed by U.S. officials that Russia is trying to help his presidential campaign
And once again the US is losing. Help both sides, de-legitimize the eventual winner, let the losers have a permanent temper tantrum - it worked once for Putin, it will work twice.
My secret hope is that the US has a counter plan which involves Putin laughing so hard he has a stroke and keels over.
I also query the conclusion of the US intel services that Putin would prefer to see Trump win. A Sanders (or Warren) fracking ban would be a boon to the value of Russian oil.
Russia Russia Russia, it's working!

Put up links at end of last thread to a rather extraordinary statement from the obtuse sussexes that the queen does not own the word royalty around the world.
The much-longer statement included the reference to the treatment of other royals, the fact that Harry is still sixth in line for the throne and that they are still entitled to public protection.
They said they 'require effective security to protect them and their son' amid controversy surrounding the estimated £3million - £6million protection bill that would be split between taxpayers in Canada and the UK.
Many sections of the later statement released on their website appear hostile in tone, especially when compared to the earlier statement which was released through a spokesman for the couple.
Many royal experts believe the episode is another PR disaster for the couple.

In an unprecedented legal move, the queen has drafted in top lawyers in a bid to enforce the ban.
A string of trademark applications, covering items from clothing and books to stationery and bandanas, were withdrawn.

This Snapshot Analysis is provided for you to see the latest (and ongoing) behaviours of Meghan Markle, through the lens of narcissism so you are able to translate the behaviours and see what is REALLY going on.
This series is also designed to enable you to apply what you see her to dynamics you have experienced, either with romantic, familial, work and/or social interactions with individuals who you may now realise is a narcissist (for help in determining this, use this Narc Detector ). It is also a series that YOU can use to show to someone else who you may suspect is ensnared with a narcissist but who has not been able to see it. Since these various updates and analyses have been provided, many people have contacted me to explain they have now realised that they were ensnared by a narcissist and the articles gave them clarity.
The subject is a Mid Range Narcissist, this means she does not know what she is, does not see anything wrong with what she does, operates purely by instinct and will not change (see Is it Planning? to understand more and search “Mid Range” in the search bar above to increase your understanding.

Anne Marie Slaughter (yes, THAT AMS) and I had a back and forth for some time, when she had her "epiphany" as a 50 something that the "you CAN do it all" she was telling her female students may well have been a pile of BS, and wrote her article for The Atlantic sharing the "big news."
I was ASTOUNDED that she had been able to live that long as a full-time anything and not learn it til then--but I quickly realized that despite those evening hours she and jimmy k put in, her "work" time was almost COMPLETELY under her control. She didn't need an entire hospital to be there to do her job. She could grade papers, maybe even write a grant, with a legal pad, pen and her kiddo in the tub.
My time NEVER was mine--I only work if a surgeon schedules surgery. So from my days as a med student, I knew well what accommodations I had to make, and exactly whose schedule would be determining mine.

Not many things reveal the dishonest and dirty nature of progs more than the fact that when the USSR was fomenting revolutions around the world and dangerously provoking us at every turn and was at its most evil; suppressing and murdering its own and its captive neighbors while building a gigantic killing machine on Western Europe's doorstep, progs made a point of being and were proud to be anti-anti communist, ridiculing the healthy fear and anti-communism of those opposed to the USSR.
Now, with it shrunk to half the size and shrinking further and with a far less aggressive stance around the world they see a Russian under every bed. And yet when Barry was in power they could scarcely have been more obsequious to Putin.
There are simply no virtues in leftism. None.

Ignatz:
In re your post about the astronomical amounts of concrete being used in China, here is a big piece of that puzzle: The North-South Water Diversion Project, which is like the Roman aqueduct system on steroids, and has been underway since at least 2014:
When the system of canals and tunnels is said to be the "biggest engineering project of all time," perhaps it should be no surprise if it requires more concrete than anything in history as well. It's one thing to characterize China's demand for concrete as "China's mass concrete binge," but it seems to me that saying, "they’ve mixed up massive amounts of concrete and splattered it across the landscape," trivializes what they've actually been doing, and minimizes the scale of their ambitions. The North-South project doesn't even show up in the author's list of concrete destinations. None of which is to say that the subject doesn't merit some serious exploration. Thanks for the article.

All depends on what type of concrete. Anyone have the mix specs? I can tell what it most likely is used for from that. And if it is being used for aqueducts and water diversion canals, another clue is the kind of reinforcement being used.
Posted by: Jim Eagle | February 22, 2020 at 01:14 PM
I just read that Guardian link about the canals and tunnels.
That is lot of concrete and I imagine the tunnels are lined. China's geology indicates plenty of pozzolans for that kind of non-structural concrete. Plus we all know about their steel production capability.
Posted by: Jim Eagle | February 22, 2020 at 01:33 PM
If they use the concrete which was used in our patio and back steps, it won't last long.
Posted by: MissMarple2 | February 22, 2020 at 01:37 PM
JiB:
I wouldn't even begin to know where to look for mix specs, but here are a couple more videos which show the kind of thing thay've been building.
Top 10 Engineering Projects
Breathtaking Mega Highways
Almost all of these are relatively recent. A lot of attention has been paid to China's "ghost cities" and replicas of various famous locations, but they've essentially been trying to play catch-up ball with the developed world in one fell swoop. Ignatz source may be right in saying that China's debts are coming due at a particularly bad time, but I think it's not surprising that trying to catch up with a 100 years of western progress would take 100 years worth of concrete.
My fav was one highway which in the U.S. would have been carved out of a mountain on the side of a river valley, but they just built the whole thing as a bridge, right up the center of the river.
It's sort of odd to see their high speed rail and all this incredibly modern infrastructure alongside of a culture that's still buying fresh batwings in open markets and defecating in store dressing rooms. Although that's sounding more like San Francisco all the time.

I think the hyperbole was meant to cover things like building a freeway on stilts rather than they simply dumped it out on the ground.
Every insecure dictatorship takes on enormous public works projects to astound the world and it always ends the same; Ozymandii spread all over the countryside.
Remember Albert Speer and Hitler's titanic plans? The Soviets built dams all over the planet. Herod. The Romans.
And now the Chinese commies with access to more credit are building monuments to themselves all over the joint and like the others will build utterly useless monuments that frequently wreak ecological and economic destruction. But that's the nature of tyrants; they're insecure so they buy what they think is security and loyalty by ordering and then watching their peon ants building mighty works no one wants or needs in most cases and think they're doing something useful.
What they are doing is sewing the seeds of their own destruction as the disruption, debt and needlessness of so much of it eventually takes over.
You would think the country that built a succession of titanic and useless walls might get a clue, but that is not the nature of man.

interviews the chairman of accountability in Ukraine. #1 example: They would take out $4 million and spend $2 million on a Government project then send the other $2 million to a NGO. Then they have no idea where the NGO spent it.

Marine One landed on the South Lawn at 9:42 p.m. @realDonaldTrump exited shortly after, wearing a dark overcoat.
@POTUS waved but did not respond to questions. He walked into the residence at 9:45 p.m.

Today is the 77th anniversary of the deaths by guillotine of the young founders of the White Rose movement.

Like one of rse's posts:
The government—or rather, the party—controlled everything: the news media, arms, police, the armed forces, the judiciary system, communications, travel, all levels of education from kindergarten to universities, all cultural and religious institutions. Political indoctrination started at a very early age, and continued by means of the Hitler Youth with the ultimate goal of complete mind control. Children were exhorted in school to denounce even their own parents for derogatory remarks about Hitler or Nazi ideology.

Poor Rupert. Cucked at least twice by his yellow spitfire ex (who at least tried to claw the eyes out of some douchetool who threw a pie at him in a clip that was better than porn) on the rebound he marries Mick Jagger's old dartboard. Step away from the Ferret, Rupert!

And there's this...
Peggy Noonan is just about coming into her panties over the Democratic debate, calls it the "best in decades". (Talk about damning with faint praise.) And there's a long interview with Clint Eastwood, about what a swell guy Bloomberg is.

Trump calling Brad Pitt a wiseguy must have been the last straw for Pitt's fellow thespian, Clint Eastwood. As long as Jon Voight doesn't come out for Bernie, I figure there's nothing to worry about - Hollywood will still give the Republicans two or three percent of their votes.

"The Conservative Case for Elizabeth Warren" was published on Jan 30 as a Commentary piece. It was not the voice of the WSJ. Commentary pieces are intended to be provocative as often as not.
It was written by Sheila Bair, the chairman of the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp., 2006-11.
FWIW.
