DrJ: Commentary pieces are intended to be provocative as often as not.

Thanks for the clarification, DrJ, but it still doesn’t make it useful journalism.

Reminds me of the Saturday Night Live parody of "Point/Counterpoint": "Jane, you ignorant slut ..."

Entertainment, neither news nor informative opinion.

Ignatz Ratzkiwatzki

I guess the Pegster is getting all hot and bothered by all the cuck love Jen Rubin has been garnering.

sbw,

This is on the OpEd page, so it is not really journalism. I find the Commentary pieces to be interesting, as often the topics are what others are talking about.

I don't agree with many of them, but that's OK. Not every opinion I read has to conform to my worldview.

DC Parents Bring Children As Young As 9 Months To Adams Morgan Drag Queen Story Hour

  • More than 50 people attended a Saturday morning D.C. Drag Queen Story Hour with drag queen “Cake.”

  • Parents and caregivers who brought their children told the Daily Caller News Foundation that they view Drag Queen Story Hour as an opportunity to introduce children to diverse ideas.

  • “It just sounded like a really fun event, different things to do on a Saturday morning,” one mother who brought her 9-month-old daughter to the event said.

Another local mother who brought her 1-year-old daughter Matilda said she thinks the event is a “such a nice program” and praised its “diversity and inclusivity.”

“This is my second one that I’ve brought her to,” the mother, Marisa Kline, explained. “As she gets older, she pays more attention, loves the stories and so yeah we will keep coming.”

“I think it’s such a great thing that D.C. communities do. It’s one of the reasons we live in this neighborhood, is we like the diversity and the community,” Kline said.

Kline “would fundamentally disagree” with those who say that it is not good for children to attend Drag Queen Story Hours.

“I think giving kids as many perspectives on the world is really important and I think that drag queens in particular teach kids positivity and acceptance,” Kline said. “Those are absolutely values I want to pass on to my daughter.”

Miss M, it’s complicated. Most government systems are one off... nobody else has welfare or social security. So it’s not like you can buy it off the shelf. When the government tries to replace one, several things happen:

A) they lose a decade in lawsuits (see the Pentagon’s cloud contract now delayed by Bezos whining in the courts). That guarantees anything built is a generation out of date.

B) total lack of accountability across contracting officers and Beltway bandit firms doing the work. See the air traffic control system that has been under development since the 80s. Can’t fire them, so they don’t care.

C) possibly the worst that can happen is the government builds something, then turns it on. The Obamacare website is a fine example.

So while it sounds good to LIVs who use free apps to Tupelo’s their privacy, until you can fire civil servants for incompetence and sue them for damages no government system development is going to save taxpayers a dime.

This is just as true at the state level. I give you the University of Wisconsin payroll system. (This should work off the shelf, I do not blame the vendor even though they are a competitor). When asked why the payroll was $35 million over budget, and when it would be completed, the civil servant in charge had no idea, no plan, no clue but thought it would be at least another decade and another $35 million. This incompetent boob still is employed by the state of WI. (Really, even with all the admins wanting custom bullshit added, an equal sized private sector payroll would believe in at most two years and a couple million spent).

How easy is it to say that "Russia" is doing this or that on the internet? There are thousands of Russian hackers, trolls and assorted other miscreants, just like there are here, or in Romania, or Nigeria. Find a Russian miscreant, claim he's working under direct orders of former KGB Putin, and viola! Russians under your bed.

It's sick, but you just know that's what these deep state scumbags did.

The funny thing is how scared they are of anyone asking questions about Ukraine meddling. And none of them ever even whisper of Chinese meddling, which is surely a more serious threat and would obviously be targeting Trump over any Democrat.

henry

Here is UW’s gloss on the Payroll project gone wrong. It doesn’t have the money quotes from the UW project manager. The claim they needed more IT consultants for off the shelf software is ludicrous, but that’s how governments roll.

What galls me is the question of why Nunes acknowledged Russian meddling in his majority report (which everyone says was 99.99 correct in hindsight). He could have called Crowdstrike out for not turning the servers over to the FBI. Even a statement of doubt would have been better than to say, "Yes, we agree with the 'IC' that the Russians tried to meddle in the election. We just don't agree on the particulars."

Forgive the long bit coming, but this explains why Toto doesn't talk in Oz though other animals do (from Tik-Tok in Oz, Baum's 9th or 10th Oz book):
Dorothy: "There's a Yellow Hen here, and she can talk, and so can her chickens; and there's a Pink Kitten upstairs in my room who talks very nicely; but I've a little fuzzy black dog, named Toto, who has been with me in Oz a long time, and he's never said a single word but 'Bow-wow!'"

"Do you know why?" asked Ozma.

"Why, he's a Kansas dog; so I s'pose he's different from these fairy animals," replied Dorothy.

"Hank isn't a fairy animal, any more than Toto," said Ozma, "yet as soon as he came under the spell of our fairyland he found he could talk. It was the same way with Billina, the Yellow Hen whom you brought here at one time. The same spell has affected Toto, I assure you; but he's a wise little dog and while he knows everything that is said to him he prefers not to talk."

"Goodness me!" exclaimed Dorothy. "I never s'pected Toto was fooling me all this time." Then she drew a small silver whistle from her pocket and blew a shrill note upon it. A moment later there was a sound of scurrying footsteps, and a shaggy black dog came running up the path.

Dorothy knelt down before him and shaking her finger just above his nose she said:

"Toto, haven't I always been good to you?"

Toto looked up at her with his bright black eyes and wagged his tail.

"Bow-wow!" he said, and Betsy knew at once that meant yes, as well as Dorothy and Ozma knew it, for there was no mistaking the tone of Toto's voice.

"That's a dog answer," said Dorothy. "How would you like it, Toto, if I said nothing to you but 'bow-wow'?"

Toto's tail was wagging furiously now, but otherwise he was silent.

"Really, Dorothy," said Betsy, "he can talk with his bark and his tail just as well as we can. Don't you understand such dog language?"

"Of course I do," replied Dorothy. "But Toto's got to be more sociable. See here, sir!" she continued, addressing the dog, "I've just learned, for the first time, that you can say words—if you want to. Don't you want to, Toto?"

"Woof!" said Toto, and that meant "no."

"Not just one word, Toto, to prove you're as any other animal in Oz?"

"Woof!"

"Just one word, Toto—and then you may run away."

He looked at her steadily a moment.

"All right. Here I go!" he said, and darted away as swift as an arrow.

Darby is extremely cute! I hope he doesn't get post-show letdown.
