Was it only three days ago I noted that elections are won in November, not February? My goodness, there is a lot to smile about and strong hints that the Democratic clown car explosion will exceed expectations.
The good news: Gallup has spent the week strafing the Democrats. Let's see:
Trump has a record job approval rating;
In a bit of a non-coincidence, a record percentage of Americans believe their financial position is better than a year ago. That eclipses the Clinton boom years by a statistically insignificant 59% to 58%, but beating Clintons by a hair is what Trump does. Also in that report, a new record high think next year will be even better. The sun is shining today AND it will come out tomorrow!
Not done yet: Also setting a new record is the percentage of Americans who feel happy or satisified with their lives. And before you ask, yes, Republicans (especially well-off and married ones) are over-represented in the Sunshine Gang, so yes, time for a group chortle. (No Dr. Evil laughs, PLEASE.)
But there is bad news looming... for Democrats. Jonathan Chait, trapped in amber as a reminder of what moderate Democrats think, outlines the impending meltdown of the Democratic primary. His gist - Biden is too weak to win but too strong to die so Bernie is likely to swoop, Trump-like, to the nomination. Which will end disastrously.
Reading it all risks a schadenfreude overdose; this may be a safe amount:
So it is entirely possible that, following South Carolina, Sanders will have won three or all four of the contests. If nobody has emerged as a viable alternative by then, Michael Bloomberg’s campaign will be stepping in. It is extremely hard to estimate the probability of success of a candidate who has skipped the first four races. FiveThirtyEight’s model currently gives Bloomberg less than a one percent chance of winning.
To be sure, if Bloomberg is the last Democrat standing against Sanders, he may well attract substantial support from Democratic elected officials and put up a strong fight. Still, he would face enormous opposition from the left. This is, after all, a billionaire who endorsed George W. Bush in 2004. And while the left has previously whipped itself into an angry frenzy against, successively, O’Rourke, Biden, Harris, and Buttigieg, the rage against Bloomberg would reach a new level.
At that point, the victory scenario would involve a long, bloody struggle all the way to the convention, with the Sanders movement claiming at every step of the way that the party is rigging the race against them, culminating in a convention where his enraged supporters will again try to shout down the proceedings. Unless one of the non-Bloombergs can somehow get off the mat and defeat Sanders, this is probably the best-case scenario for liberals at this point. It seems more probable that Sanders crushes the field and brings his historically unique suite of liabilities to the ticket.
Now obviously Team Sanders already believes the DNC is out to thwart them, again. Left unmentioned by Chait - Bloomberg is basically buying the DNC. He hosts "fundraisers" but won't take people's money - if they want to write a check he points them to the DNC or Swing Left.
I am just guessing but I don't think that will leave Sanders and his supporters feeling the love.
Well. A week from now (or a tweet from now) this may all be ashes, but today? So far, so good!
What makes anyone think a bad small-town mayor would be capable of the presidency?
All the Deep Staters, who think they run everything anyway, so the titular head doesn't matter. Actually, the weaker, the better.
Obama (Jarret) did it, after all.

“After a while I realized I would only be called upon when climate organizations needed an inspiring story or a “diverse” voice, contacts for a campaign, or to participate in a workshop for “fun” when everyone else on the (all-white) project was getting paid,” she complains.

I am totally in sympathy with frustration with the automated call tree. I got into a catch-22 with one last week, in which they wanted me to pay a bill over the phone (late to AT&T) but in order to pay it I had to move money from savings to checking.
It was after banking hours and they had cut off my internet so I couldn't access my account. Fortunately, my phone is on a separate account with auto-pay and was still operational. I had to do exactly what you guys talk about, yelling operator. I finally got a nice guy who reconnected me and waited while I gave him a blow-by-blow of me logging onto my bank account and moving the money.

It's obvious to your readers that you outthink 90% of the peeps out there--be patient--it takes a bit to help them "see" how to get to your (commonsense) goal.
One tip, if you are fortunate to be dealing with a human--I often begin with "who can authorize" and then I put forth what I think ought to be the conclusion of the interaction.
Saves a lot of time, because as you found out, nowadays , it's not always the person they designate to do the initial contact, if it doesn't fit the script.

2. I mean very few of our politicians are deep thinkers and he would not be one of the exceptions. Pete strikes me as a bright, glib and ambitious young man and a total bullshit artist. He has chosen the right profession for his talents. I don’t think that he has any core beliefs beyond a desire for self advancement. I of course disagree with him on most if not all of his policy ideas...The ability to sound profound without saying anything noteworthy is a skill that most politicians wish they were better at.--
It took you ten times as many words in #2 to agree with me and refute your own #1, but you did do a pretty good job of it.
Congrats.
Pete Buttigieg = homoautoerotictude = a gay platitude that loves itself.
--I have zero interest in his sex life. He can bugger (or be buggered by) whatever consenting adult he wants; it means absolutely nothing to me. I don’t care what he talks to himself about in the bath either.--
I don't care that a person is a botoxed, siliconed old crone or a pencil necked, goggle eyed freak or a fat dwarf whose pants are slowly devouring him or an oddball, stretch who hides in the curtains unless they start inserting themselves in my life and trying to wreck the country. At that point every way in which I can insult, discredit or needle them is fair game.

The Lt. Colonel: When Schiff sent his request

The Brother: Oh, you should have seen the faces of the right-wing boors
All: Oh, you should have seen the faces of the right-wing boors
Oh, to see their faces,
How we put them in their places,
Right-wing boors!
The Lt. Colonel: When I was a lad so much we lacked
as signatories to the Warsaw Pact
I retained the language of my native land
and in corridors of power often lent a hand
’Twas a hand I lent the interagency
And now I’m the Authority at NSC
Chorus: ’Twas a hand he lent the interagency
And now he’s the Authority at NSC
The Lt. Colonel: With the interagency’s old broom
I swept and cleaned the situation room
My notes of each call were spick and span

That fertile territory, perforce,
Is the only Tory I revere without remorse
I’ve blocked so well those GRUshniki*
That now I’m the Authority at NSC
Chorus: He’s blocked so well those GRUshniki
That now he’s the Authority at NSC
The Lt. Colonel: I made the voyage to take in
last year’s vernal Presidential swearing-in
There was a fellow there who did explain
that I could be named a Minister back in Ukraine
But I serve the cause with facility,
Since I am the Authority at NSC
Chorus: But he serves the cause with facility,
Since he is the Authority at NSC
The Lt. Col.: NeverTrumpsmen all, all Deep State mutineers
Save your cherished land before the dread hour nears
If you aren’t in the thrall of the bright orange glow
You needn’t flee to Canada or Mexico

Ignatz —
You once again demonstrate your ability to paint clever word pictures. You really should monetize that skill, but you are probably tired of us saying that. We are glad that you share your writing here in any event.
You missed my point re Pete. You indicated that he set some sort of generational standard for vapidity. My response — perhaps too verbose — was essentially that he is merely garden variety shallow for a politician.
Your verbal caricatures of Pete and Jerry and Adam (I assume) are quite humorous. But while it is certainly fair game to make fun of people s looks and clothes and age, etc., it is a bit odd to do so in a post complaining about “shallowness.” Your lampoons of these people, as spot on and funny as they are, are quite obviously cheap shots.
I think the cartooning of peoples sex lives is a bit cringe inducing and picking on the gay guy is a bit selective. Why go there? If by some miracle Amy Klobuchar were to become the nominee would you write imaginative pieces about her in bed? Maybe you would, but for me a) I assume that she has a sex life and b) I don’t want to think about it.
In any event, we agree that Buttigieg should not be president. If your clever cartoons of him help even in some small way to keep him out of the Oval Office that’s great.

I KNOW my daughter will go bananas when she finds out, but I have to have unassailable proof, not just the reasonable theories that we have come up with.
My sister, the retired Catholic schoolteacher, was here earlier today and she did NOT know that there was a temple on Epstein's island. She had never heard of it! I looked it up on a search to show her. She is pro-Trump, too, so it's not like she's been sequestered on NPR like my democrat sister.
I need actual audits, indictments, etc. I need something that converts my daughter the way I got disgusted with Carter and voted for Reagan, even though I had grown up in a family that had been democrat since Roosevelt.
Bonus for me: my sister says there is a new priest at our church and she is going to take me to Mass tomorrow. It's a younger priest who does HIGH MASS at every service, and she finds he counters the bad influence of Pope Che. (That means all responses are sung. Also, his homilies are good and she is a pretty stern critic.)

New.
MM, the new priest sounds like an improvement.

Has anyone asked what the other Burisma board members were paid each month? Cofer Black?

So good to have you back, Elliott.

henry:
What's well nigh hilarious about the Bloomberg video you linked is that only moments after Bloomberg opines that the non-intelligentsia can't cope with the subtleties of gender and go crazy over little things like a guy wearing a dress being admitted to the girls' locker room, he says that of course, when we put people in prisons, we say drop your trousers first, because we've got to keep the men and women separated (slightly paraphrased). Because...Intelligentsia!
I think Bloomberg is the best Dems have got, but that doesn't mean he can't run off the rails before election day. Hope that video goes seriously viral.

And of course now the NYTimes has this newest fake story - they don't give up
" A handful of senators reached out to the White House to warn the president not to dismiss Gordon D. Sondland, the ambassador to the European Union who testified in the House hearings"
They are so predictable.
