Kev,

Even if you offset the cost of parking, I would have to get their at least 24 hours early. Thanks for the offer, but I simply do not have the knees or hip joints to do it anymore, not to mention the general stamina. I am 72.

If local channels decide to cover it, I will link their feed on here.

Porchlight

MM, you could get someone to drop you off by the venue. Then pick you up again.

You can also bring camp chairs. No need to stand while you're waiting in line outside. When you get inside, that's different - they won't let you bring the chairs in. But most people just leave them outside and then pick them up again on the way out.

Porchlight

I don't think you'd have to get there 24 hours early if the venue was large. Maybe 6 at the most.

henry

Uber pricing changes with demand... like at a Trump rally. That assumes Uber serves where you live. Lots of Uber drivers near me, but they all head to the airport to get fares. None serve this rural ride share desert.

Jane

Just invite him over for dinner, MM. Then you don't have to go anywhere.

Jane

I don't mean to be a complete idiot, but it's so bloody cold here, I need mittens. I'm used to being outside about 8 hours a day and this is ridiculous.

TomR @ 3:34 —

Totally agree.

We have a democracy and live in a country with a wise spectrum of political and cultural views. Winning requires persuasion and compromise and accommodation to entice the center and the center left to side with the right against the extreme left. It is simply paranoid nonsense to think that moderate liberals such as you describe are unwittingly paving the way to slavery. Too insist to the contrary is to drive moderates into siding with the left against the right.

Of course one can compromise too much and it is a mistake to treat enemies as allies. But in a pluralistic society some compromise is necessary to build winning coalitions. One simply cannot define as “allies” those who totally agree and condemn as “enemies” those who share most but not all of our values and ideas. You can’t always get what all of what you want in politics. Treating potential allies as enemies because they are not fellow true believers is certainly not a wise strategy.

I am not sure what “cultural wars” you are referring to. The front lines today seem to be about pronouns and gender fluidity and bathrooms and the intersectionality fetish. We can win these wars by appealing to the common sense of the general public. But for those decrying the victory of 1960s libertinism, that war is over. Widespread acceptance of premarital sex, divorce and homosexuality is here to stay. The sexual mores of the 1950 s are never coming back. It is time accept that and move on.

Porchlight,

This is Mike Pence's state and is FULL of Trump people, plus we are 2 hours from the state line of Illinois farm country, an hour and a half from Louisville. There is no way that waiting would be as short as you think.

Tom R

OK, but nothing you said, nor their answer to my question, changes the fact that their basic political ideals if allowed to predominate as they have for the last 100+ years ...

You are changing to a different argument. You posed a question and made the declaration that essentially everyone on the left would answer Yes. I have pointed out to you why that is not the case and that some on the left would answer No.

Those to the left of the political center have a tenuous relationship with the Constitution. That "difference in the role the Federal government should have" is the difference between the country the Founders created and the one liberals would like to live in.

This debate has been going on for 240+ years. Some of the Founders were advocates of a strong, centralized federal government. Alexander Hamilton comes to mind. The question about how much of a role the federal government should have at the expense of invidual citizens was the primary basis for the two original political parties. Regardless of what side of the aisle you are on for this debate that has been going on since the country was founded, it doesn't have anything to do with the problems facing the country today.

This country has survived for 240+ years and became a superpower and the leading proponent of a "liberal democratic " form of government because liberals and conservatives worked together in a bipartisan spirit. The root cause of the problems facing the country today that you have documented very well were not caused by liberals. The problems were caused by Communists who started spreading a cancer in society going all the way back to the Frankfurt School at Columbia, Saul Alinksy in Chicago, Soviets infiltrating moles into all branches of the federal governemnt, etc etc. Those are the people who will eagerly answer Yes to your question.

Porchlight

I'm sure some people will camp out for 24 hours. There's no way the entire venue will have to, though. Remember he's going to do about 30 rallies in Ohio before it's all over.

My understanding (which might not be correct) is that if the judge grants a motion for a new trial, the same judge will usually preside over said new trial. If, on the other hand, a new trial is ordered by the court of appeals the standard practice is to randomly reassign the case to another judge.

FBI ARRESTS HACKER LINKED TO FORMER REP. KATIE HILL’S CAMPAIGN

FEDERAL AGENTS HAVE arrested Arthur Dam in connection with a hacking spree that disrupted the 2018 Democratic California primary that ultimately nominated Katie Hill, according to a new criminal complaint.

Dam, in the criminal complaint, is linked directly to the Hill campaign. Hill won the general election in California’s 25th District and then later resigned from Congress amid controversy.

“Dam was found to be connected to the cyber attacks through subscriber information, IP addresses, geolocation history, and open sources, including through his employer and his wife, K.O., who worked for one of the Victim’s opponents,” the complaint reads.

Dam’s wife is Kelsey O’Hara, Hill’s fundraiser during the campaign and her district director after she won office. O’Hara was also the subject of a sexual remark made by Hill and caught on tape by Vice News in 2018. In Hill’s Federal Election Commission records, she lists a $500 in-kind contribution from Dam on March 25, 2018, for “graphic design and website security consultation.”

TK —

Thanks.

I was actually referring to citizens and not politicians. Having spent most of my life in Chicago, the notion of an honest politician strikes me as an oxymoron.

In any event there are approximately 235 (?) Democrats in the House and 47 Democrats in the Senate. I don’t know enough to say how moral or honest most of them are. My view remains that in the wider population there are decent and honest liberals (even if I disagree with them politically ) and thorough going scoundrels among conservatives (and of course vice versa).

Again, my opinion is that the difference between liberals and conservatives is a difference of opinion about the best way to organize society. It is not a clash between paragons of virtue and those who wish to do evil. I certainly have known in my own life well meaning liberals who sincerely believed that the policies that they favored would be good for society. Of course there are liberals (and conservatives) who pretend to have a hig minded agenda while advancing their own interests.

Anyway, thanks for asking.

Here's the context and the question;

Theo isn't the only one who thinks or says progs and cons are just flip sides of the same coin and equidistant from some theoretical central axis. A lot of people here have expressed the same thought about lots of "liberals". And I suppose for those progs who are not particularly thoughtful or introspective that might possibly be true.
Here's a good test; setting aside private and quasi-private institutions like the media or the universities for clarity's sake, ask a prog if it's acceptable or ok for government bureaucracy to be heavily biased toward one political side or the other and whether it's ok for bureaucrats to resist one political vision while promoting another.

Any person who cannot or will not acknowledge the fundamentally anti-democratic, anti-republican and incredibly dangerous and autocratic threat that poses to self-governance either is so stupid they shouldn't posses the franchise or is a closeted totalitarian. Anyone who does recognize the danger and is in favor of it is not even in the closet.

How many progs or liberals would pass that test?
Damn few, IMO.

What did I change? Have any of your liberal friends told you how dangerous the biased bureaucracy we already have is? How many are objecting to the actions of Comey, McCabe, Brennan, not to mention Ciaremella and the Bobsy twins and all the other underlings toiling away?
Even I acknowledge there are still a few but I have seen ZEE-RO evidence that I should change my opinion.

What amazes me about the Trump rallies is that he's doing these things without a teleprompter. Obama could not recite Mary Had A Little Lamb without the help of two teleprompters. But Trump can stand up there and riff for a couple of hours without stopping.

Okay how does he do it? I suspect it's partly taking pieces from a canned stump speech which he's repeated in a lot of places. It may also be that he goes to the podium knowing what he wants to say, with a check list of points to cover. I've done that on occasion. You get a much better effect than you would if you'd read a text, of if you'd memorized it and delivered it verbatim. It gives you freedom to interact with your audience, maintain eye contact with them, and like a jazz musician improvise a little.

Mini Mike Bloomberg can not match that.

Red Faced Bernie, your angry old uncle who's had a few belts before he starts to talk, can't match that. In fact I've been thinking that if Bernie gets the nomination and takes the stage against The Donald, Bernie will get torpedoed by Trump delivering a genial Reaganesque "There you go again" at some outburst by Bernie.

KevlarKid

i can't buy your argument in general, Theo, because the disagreement isnt over how to organize society. in ESSENCE the disagreement is over application of the coercive power of the State to exact conformity to legal standards, regulations, and consumption patterns. it is about power and control first and foremost.

organizational models are used to pitch and persuade the different teams and their financiers. power and control determines what gets sold and implemented.

henry

Comanche, when I was in sales I could do a couple hours of presentation while reading audience cues. It is a business skill that Trump has, but many politicians inexplicably do not. Lots of experience delivering on the sales pitch helps, perhaps that is what hacks liked Odumbo are missing.

Buckeye

KK -

I am not following your argument. By definition, government exerts coercion. The argument is not whether the government should exercise coercion, but to what ends. A conservative wants government to, for example, use it’s coercive power to protect private property. A liberal might want the coercive power of the state to force a baker to bake a cake for an event that violates the baker’s religious sensibilities.

As I see it, both sides want power and control to be used in order to create or maintain the kind of society they favor.

It is directionally true that libertarians would favor less use of coercion into private behavior. Conservatives in general might likely favor reducing or even eliminating, say, the power of the FDA to enforce things like CAFE standards.

But neither side is opposed to government coercion in support of their agenda. A whole lot of conservatives favor using the power of the state to deport people here illegally while many liberals would refrain from such an exercise of coercive power. Or to use Ig’s favorite example, many social conservatives want to use the coercive power of the state to prevent abortions in cases where the government presently takes no action.

Power and control do not exist in the abstract. Both sides want to use it to further their view of what society should be and both sides do not want such power to be used contrary to their vision for society.

The Uighars are Chinese Muslims. They go to the Hajj.

I doubt they open the concentration camps for this.

The original fear was that the coronavirus would pop up in some poor African country that couldn't contain or treat it properly.

Iran might just be a worse case as it's people aren't as isolated as they would be in a poor African country. Right now with the election lines and religious journeys drop a few super-spreaders in there and it's beyond containment in Iran.

I don't know what impact that will have on the region or the world, but I think Iran is f*cked right now.

I went to college in Ohio. Great place, nice people. But in the places that I have lived since, you probably would have to walk your own dog.

What school Theo?

Jim_nj, sadly it will devastate the people of Iran while the ayatollahs can afford safety. Much like China. The innocents pay the bill.

Notth into azeri territory east to pakistan india, and a hop across the persian gulf.

Buckeye —

Wright State University near Dayton. This was a long time ago and it was not near as prestigious then as it is now.

One of my brothers still lives in that area.

I went to high school in Dayton, many of my classmates went to Wright State.

I ended up at Ohio State because that is where my drinking buddies wanted to go.

Pretty much the truth, sad to say:)

Why in the heck is she over there at all? Not to mention the Soros kid.

Theo:

read what i said. you fog things up to extend your original point of two sides just wanting to organize a bake sale.

"By definition, government exerts coercion. The argument is not whether the government should exercise coercion, but to what ends. "

that's your lead in your rejoinder.

in essence the heart of my disagreement with all the cuddly opposition is how much power and control they should have to increase and expand state coercive power to control outcomes.

in the meantime your bromide for me is to work at "persuading" and "cajoling" an increasingly violent opposition to see it my way and let's be neighbors.

Jane

Theo,

I understand your argument. The problem is that the “differences “ are carried out - well rarely, but shouted out by very dirty politicians, particularly on the left at this point. The fact that liberals are willing to sweep that under the rug, is what, at this time, separates the left from the right. Not that our side doesn’t have some dirt, but we don’t get away with it like they do.
