Concerns about the coronavirus (with a possible boost from the Bernie virus) have the Dow set to dive 400 points on Monday morning.
And this is interesting - people are trying lots of ways to get a sense of the Chinese economy:
China’s recent air pollution levels may be telling a story about the coronavirus impact on its economy
...
Analysts are using pollution levels as a gauge of industrial activity. Major cities in China are well known for being choked by smog, due to the extensive burning of coal by factories.
So far this year, pollution levels have been between 20% and 25% lower compared to the same period last year, Tapas Strickland of National Australia Bank (NAB) said in a note earlier last week, suggesting there was a substantial decline in industrial activity in the first quarter.
Referring to the official update that more than 80% of China’s 20,000 manufacturing subsidies have resumed work, Rodrigo Catril, senior foreign exchange strategist at NAB, cast doubt on the actual progress.
“This news should have been embraced warmly by the market, however high frequency data such as pollution levels and traffic congestion gauges in Beijing do not at this stage corroborate the upbeat official message, keeping investors wary,” he said in a note Wednesday.
On Feb. 20 (Thursday), daily coal consumption of six major power plants was 42.5% less than the same time last year, according to Nomura, which has been tracking such metrics daily. The Japanese bank has also been following data on traffic congestion, passenger flows and new home sales in a bid to track the progress of China’s work resumption.
Be nice if UVC killed off this little bugger.

I'm concerned about the way this virus is behaving. China has a lot to answer for.

I like the expression that Sec. Navarro used, "We're moving at Trump time." Looks like the administration is ramped up to deal with this. I don't know how you produce a vaccine in "half the time," but it will be interesting to see how that works out.
Note that China stopped the exportation of protective face masks and then nationalized the American company that produced them in China. Not good.

The amontillado strategy
Narciso,
I had forgotten that story until you posted it above. Rather gruesome, wasn't it.
Initially, there were stories of the Chinese people reacting angrily to the way this virus got out and to the way they were being treated. China has doubled down to control both the outbreak and the people.
Navarro mentioned at the beginning of his interview that a good deal of our problem is that our resources (drugs, protective masks, etc.) are offshore in places like China and India. That's coming back to bite us now. I certainly hope that this sparks a change in where critical products like these are produced. It's not like we haven't been warned before.

In my study of communist societies, I came to the conclusion that the purpose of communist propaganda was not to persuade or convince, not to inform, but to humiliate; and therefore, the less it corresponded to reality the better. When people are forced to remain silent when they are being told the most obvious lies, or even worse when they are forced to repeat the lies themselves, they lose once and for all their sense of probity. To assent to obvious lies is...in some small way to become evil oneself. One's standing to resist anything is thus eroded, and even destroyed. A society of emasculated liars is easy to control. I think if you examine political correctness, it has the same effect and is intended to.

--So deep state has engineered the end of Trump? Or a buying opportunity?--
I actually think this not a very effective way of doing that. The Kung Flu is one of the few ways he could plausibly avoid having a market crash or recession hung on him.
I also doubt very much Xi and company engineered this to put the hurt on trump or HK by killing a bunch of people in Wuhan.
By far the biggest threat this poses is to Xi and the commie party.
Even if it doesn't break the party's grip on power it has the potential to severely and perhaps permanently disrupt their economic plans upon which all of their dreams of world domination depend.

Applied that lesson during our trip to St. Paul. Dinner with College Man's girlfriend's parents. One of those long lingering dinners out. A lot to share. Towards the end they ripped open the conversation with rants about the President.
Then they looked at me, and almost in unison, asked "What do you think of Trump?"
Simple reply: "He is the man for our times."
After that comment: "Political beliefs are deeply personal. I'm glad that you both felt you could share without any fear of losing my friendship."

My recollection was that Reagan had Paul Volcker desparately trying to reign in interest rates for the entire first term. Frankly, it looked bad for Reagan until the interest rates broke below 10% (from a high of over 20%) in the fall of 1984.

Volcker warned Reagan that to tame inflation, he would have to Jack short term rates very high, and that the economy could stall. Also was getting told by Laffer that tax cuts for the public would free the economy. Reagan said to Volcker “Do what you have to do. We’ll work to make sure it works.” Then worked to get the tax cuts two years later. Tip made sure Congressional spending also got some juice.
Slick got his retroactive tax hike with no consequences because Reagan’s tax cuts were creating too big a wave to stymie.

The trouble is you can't take China's numbers as legit. And frankly I'm skeptical about the CDC apparatchiks.
This is exactly it.
The coronavirus may be hugely overblown and the ever more hysterical news reports may be just irresponsible fearmongering.
But given the longstanding, amply documented incompetence and dishonesty of the people and organizations giving us official information, there's no way for us to be sure, and if it's a matter of life and death, I'm going to err on the side of "it's far worse than the government wants me to know."
