Porch: "I'm not saying Romney is setting up his 2024 run in a SMART fashion"

I get that GOPe will wait for Trump to serve 5 more years then try to return to the old days. I still have trouble believing Mitt could contemplate that to be a workable plan...

I think that Repubs like Mitt and Paul Ryan fundamentally concede the Dem view of Americans like us. I think they agree that we're bad people. They're ashamed of us. Now that we're running things they need to find a different party. It's a dream that they could retrieve the Repub Party.

Theo:

Put not your faith in polls. That's not where Trump voters were in 2016, and I'd be surprised to find them accurately represented there in 2020. I also suspect that those really high numbers he gets on the economy are the dispositive ones. People have gotten used the formula that goes something like, yeah, I wish he would quit tweeting or I think he's really crude, but....

I keep suggesting that the supposedly historic trends are susceptible to change. It seems to me you're relying on the numbers when you say you see no expansion beyond the base, while dismissing what Trump is saying and to whom he is saying it as merely "anecdotal." Your mistake is thinking the poll numbers are the equivalent of evidence, while anecdotes are ephemera, when you only find out which was more accurate ex post facto. I'm not at all sure whether the standard polls questions can actually capture or translate the effect of a Kanye West defection, for example, into reliable numbers.

Even by your measure, with a base that has remained rock solid, reaching beyond it is not nearly as risky as it might be for someone else.

Mitt Romney will never be President of the United States. He will never again be the Republican nominee for President. If he votes to convict the President he will prove, indisputably, to 95% of the Republican party that he is not on our side.

D

I am disappointed in Romney.
I was wrong in thinking he would vote the right way on impeachment.

Barbara

IIRC, Romney was one of the ones pushing for a censure vote. Perhaps that has failed — at least I hope it has — hence his meanspirited vote.

No profile in courage here. Romney wanted to be President without really standing for much of anything. Does he really believe that this vote will preclude his family from being investigated for its dealings in Ukraine? If that's where the facts lead, there's no reason to protect him — or anyone else in Utah who's mixed up in this business.

According to the WSJ, Romney is the first Senator in US history to vote for conviction of a President of his own party. Congrats, Mitt. Figures that first would go to a Republican.

Extraneus
Speaking with the senator in an interview taped prior that aired on Fox news channel, Wallace said, “You realize this is war. Donald Trump will never forgive you for this.”

Romney replied, “I know in my heart that I’m doing what’s right. I understand there’s going to be enormous consequence. And I don’t have a choice in that regard. That’s why I haven’t been anxious to be in the position I’m in. When I heard there was going to be an impeachment investigation, as I heard the evidence coming forward, I dreaded the responsibility I’d have. But I was not willing to abdicate the responsibility given to me by the Constitution, nor to ignore my conscience out of personal and political significance, considerations. I had to follow my conscience.”

He added, “And I have to recognize that it was one or the other. One is to say I don’t want to face the blowback, not just from the president but from my party, my state, from Republican voters. They will ascribe all sorts of motives and so forth. And those are all the consequences. But on the other side, there is: do you do what you know is right? Do you do what your conscience in your heart tells you? Do you abide by the oath that you swore to God? And I believe in God and I believe I have a responsibility to put that first went to put all the other consequences behind.”

Mitt Romney's decision to convict Trump on Article #1 and acquit Trump on Article #2 is a perfect summary of Mitt in a nutshell. Always seeking the milquetoast, middle-of-the-road approach which satisfies nobody.

Voting guilty on Article #1 makes Romney a traitor in the eyes of the GOP. Voting not guilty on Article #2 makes Romney a coward in the eyes of the Democrats.

This was the most Mitt approach that Mitt Romney could have done this afternoon.
