Picking up all the topics from the last thread....
My teen knows three transgender kids - all girls identifying as boys. There is a lot of social cachet with this, particularly in middle school, so two of them I'd say are exploring the idea and enjoying the attention.
The third just graduated last June and as an 18 year old basically had two mastectomies. I don't know if he is on hormones or for how long, though I assume so as he exhibits the weight gain and spotty facial hair and his parents and sister are all slim and fit.
Of the three kids, only one comes from a challenging home situation. The other two have supportive families who are offering a pretty balanced approach overall, though behind closed doors who knows.
--I had a Turkish suite-mate in college who raped his Spanish future-wife on their first sexual encounter and I'd bet money they're grandparents by now, and still together.--
Okay. But if a woman sleeps with the guy again but doesn't have grandkids with him and later learns he did the same thing to lots of other women, did the rape not exist and he gets a get-out-of-jail free card?
It should make her less credible that she went back with him, but if there is sufficient corroborating evidence seems to me he ought to serve the same stretch as any other rapist regardless of the sluttiness, dopiness or lack of mental health of the woman he raped.
Did you happen to look up green as well (thinking about Melania's silk waist scarf which was also so clearly an Indian-inspired detail?
I thought about it but am researching hand written letters and got distracted. I love that the dancers were wearing yellow as well!
Here's a little tidbit on green:
It represents life, peace, happiness, and nature. For Muslim Indians, green has a significance as well, since Islam is usually associated with this color. For Muslims, green means peace, and according to their beliefs, inhabitants of paradise will be clothed in green. Legend says it was the Prophet Muhammad’s favorite color.
--Odd Reversal – California Sheriff Now Says No Conclusion of Suicide in Mysterious Death of DHS Whistle-blower…
The Amador County Sheriff’s department now appears to be walking back their initial claim of suicide in the death of DHS Whistle-blower Phillip Haney. In addition to the announcement the sheriff’s office has requested assistance from the FBI--
The local sheriff is very highly regarded around here and spent a few decades as an investigator of serial murders etc for the state DOJ. His pop was the local superior court judge, his brother is the county tax collector and his niece the county recorder. In some way my family is related to them and the families used to own a few hundred acres together.
He's no pinko, in case anyone was wondering.
So I'm going to spend a few minutes dominating the thread and go to bed.
I've been researching hand written letters after seeing a fantastic exhibit at Cornell's art museum. Tong Yang-Tze is a calligraphy artist from Taiwan who has been using her art to engage young people with the study of calligraphy, which is apparently (like cursive) a dying art form in China. She turns lines from poems into huge murals that make the characters appear abstract. Here's an article about her:
As happens, the Teen and I were just having a conversation about how hard she finds it to read cursive, so I started reading old letters online and what a treasure trove of wonderful tidbits you find!
Pytor Ilich Tchaikovsky wrote to a gentleman in France:
People have written to me to tell me that many musicians have found my music quite interesting... I would like... to rent one of the concert halls in Paris... As... I would not presume that the public would pay to come and see me, I will bring the necessary amount of money... I will distribute free entry tickets
Oliver Cromwell writing to a friend:
I hope you give my son good councill, I believe he needs it. He is in the dangerous time of this age, and it's a very vain world. You see how I am employed? I need pity.
Ah parenting was challenging even in 1651.
I rather like Charlotte Bronte's moxie while describing her critics:
The critics of these papers are, I doubt not, acute men in their way - theirs is not the shallow weakness of The Observer and the Daily News. But when called on to criticise works of imagination, they stand in the position of deaf men required to listen to music, or blind men to judge a painting.
And finally, Albert Einstein writing to his childhood friend from the US in 1935:
Do you still remember when we were young, and we were working together on those nice little electrostatic machines? Do you also remember our conversation about the politics of Germany, which you were still defending during the war, while I had already got to know at first hand the consequent dangers? I weighed anchor just at the right moment from there, so that I at least didn't get to feel the claws of the clean-cut heroes in my back. I have now set up home in this curious new world and am still brooding like an old hen on the same old scientific eggs, even if the bodily warmth which one needs for brooding has rather diminished over the years. What is so nice in this country is that the people don't sit so much on top of one another and, as a result, feel more comfortable with each other.
I rather like the image of him brooding like an old hen over the same old ideas.

Anyone else notice the lack of Southern accents from a good many of the people asking questions at tonight's #CNNTownHall in Charleston, South Carolina?
[The Young Turkeys] Founder Cenk Uygur actually threw a temper tantrum at an employee meeting in early February when he was informed that the writers and staff at TYT were unionizing.
But wait! It gets funnier! Uygur told HuffPo that he "worries a unionized workforce would bring new legal and bureaucratic costs that TYT can’t sustain." You don't say! Well, that's not news to any of us over here on the sane side of the aisle, who have been telling people forever that unions are mostly political organizations that destroy companies and prop up the Democrat party but don't mind us. We're just over here eating our popcorn and laughing.
You know we need Trump reelected more than just about anything, but we also need these two decades of asset bubbles to end.
They have done all sorts of damage but the amount of filthy lucre on the left they have made available for prog projects is unimaginable.
Not to mention the amount of government debt and spending they have enabled.
New ESPN president Jimmy Pitaro is cancelling a lot of the “woke” shows on the network.
They have to be deeply underwater financially. They did really dumb things like get exclusive rights to all the Bag of Dicks bowls that nobody cares about. And Goodell Football League wild card games that the other networks didn't want. Then they started losing viewers turned off by their woke attitude. Frankly what Pitaro is doing is an overdue dose of sanity.
--Why does Loesch give Tapper the benefit of the doubt?
She needs to wise up.--
She sounds as though he has treated her fairly and professionally in the past and is apparently not a creep off camera.
That usually goes a long way with people.
"Lebanon was hit with a double downgrade over the weekend by two of the world’s largest ratings agencies, dragging its sovereign credit rating further into junk territory. Moody’s and S&P Global Ratings downgraded Lebanon’s long-term foreign currency rating to Ca and CC, respectively — both of which are ten levels below investment grade. The country is now rated lower than Argentina and the Democratic Republic of Congo."
Looking at Johns Hopkins again. South Korea is still in the lead outside of China with 893 cases and 8 deaths. That's a .08% fatality rate. Italy is the next country with 229 cases and 7 deaths. That's a 3% fatality rate.
Iran is the sixth place country outside of China with 61 cases and 12 deaths. That's the highest death count outside of China. That's a 19% fatality rate.
South Korea, and even more so, Italy are problematic. South Korea we think we understand as one super-spreader in a church environment breaking what had been a seemingly decent containment effort. Italy is a WTF situation. Something we don't understand happened there. I mean why Italy? And what accounts for the rather fast rise in cases?
But my biggest concern outside of China is still Iran. So the progression is 2 (revised to 8) cases last Wednseday, then 18, 28, 38, 43, and this Monday 61 total cases with a 19% fatality rate.
A 19% fatality rate suggests several possibilities. The virus in Iran is several orders of magnitude more deadly than elsewhere. That doesn't sound right. Iran's health care system isn't up to the task. That doesn't feel right. Iran's health care system is stressed due to international sanctions. [waffling hand motion]
Or Iran has a hell of a lot more unidentified carriers out there interacting with people unchecked. And they just congregated for parliamentary elections last Friday. Will that cause a spike in the number of new cases a few days or weeks from now?
The clandestine aspects of Iran worry me. There was a report of an IRGC sponsored flight from China to Iran just a few days ago. If Iran doesn't have control of the IRGC that is troubling. If the IRGC is still moving people into Syria or Iraq for military reasons that is troubling.
Maybe my bias against the Iranian government is showing, but I just have this feeling that Iran is more of a risk than Italy or South Korea as we move forward in time.
"John Nolte of Breitbart News has assembled a list of 389 liberal attacks on conservatives since 2015 that the media ignores. But, when a rodeo clown wore an Obama mask it’s all the fake news media could talk about for a week. These attacks include vandalism and physical attacks, such as the college professor who cracked a man’s head open with an iron pipe."
There is a web link to each story. Not that I suggest you read them all. Just send the list to a liberal friend.
“We are in a scenario in this country where you can choose to be a member of the party led by Donald J. Trump or you can choose to be a member of the socialist Democratic party led by Bernie Sanders,” noted Governor Tate Reeves.
Millsaps Department of Government and Politics chair Dr. Nathan Shrader says given the GOP sweep in statewide offices last year and the approval rating for Donald Trump, it opens the door to this.
“They have a plausible argument to make with these elected officials that your constituent are already aligning with us, the voting patterns in your district are moving in our direction, you should join the team too,” said Dr. Shrader."

I have tried 3 times to link the video from the President's ceremonial welcome at Rashtrapati Bhavan; which was quite spectacular. The President of India tweeted it linking a Periscope account but Typepad won't show it.

Bloomberg should be going over that fact sheet Sanders released and figuring out how much the average voter's taxes would go up, as well as how much unemployment his policies would cause.

Around 1,000 holidaymakers in a Tenerife hotel have been told to remain in their rooms after an Italian tourist there tested positive for coronavirus.
Officials confirmed the H10 Costa Adeje Palace hotel as the site of the latest case Covid-19 virus, the third to affect Spain.
Police were said to be surrounding the hotel to make sure no-one enters or leaves.
A regional health authority spokeswoman said: "The hotel guests are not in quarantine. Health vigilance procedures are in place.
"The measures will be subject to modification during the day as health experts decide on the best course of action."
The spokeswoman said one of the modifications could be a "formal ban on people entering and leaving the hotel".

Ezra Klein
You said being a democratic socialist means a more international view. I think if you take global poverty that seriously, it leads you to conclusions that in the US are considered out of political bounds. Things like sharply raising the level of immigration we permit, even up to a level of open borders. About sharply increasing ...
Bernie Sanders
Open borders? No, that's a Koch brothers proposal.
Ezra Klein
Really?
Bernie Sanders
Of course. That's a right-wing proposal, which says essentially there is no United States. ...
Ezra Klein
But it would make ...
Bernie Sanders
Excuse me ...
Ezra Klein
It would make a lot of global poor richer, wouldn't it?
Bernie Sanders
It would make everybody in America poorer —you're doing away with the concept of a nation state, and I don't think there's any country in the world that believes in that. If you believe in a nation state or in a country called the United States or UK or Denmark or any other country, you have an obligation in my view to do everything we can to help poor people. What right-wing people in this country would love is an open-border policy. Bring in all kinds of people, work for $2 or $3 an hour, that would be great for them. I don't believe in that. I think we have to raise wages in this country, I think we have to do everything we can to create millions of jobs.
You know what youth unemployment is in the United States of America today? If you're a white high school graduate, it's 33 percent, Hispanic 36 percent, African American 51 percent. You think we should open the borders and bring in a lot of low-wage workers, or do you think maybe we should try to get jobs for those kids?
I think from a moral responsibility we've got to work with the rest of the industrialized world to address the problems of international poverty, but you don't do that by making people in this country even poorer.
Today @POTUS @realDonaldTrump spoke to 110K+ people in India at the world’s largest cricket stadium. He said: “In America & in India, we know that we are all born for a higher purpose: to reach toward our fullest potential... & to give all glory to God.”
In that interview, Bernie almost makes the leap between $35-40k hotel service jobs with good health insurance and illegal immigration.
Almost. He claims it's unions, avoiding supply and demand that he mentions earlier. He could have tied it all together, or Klein could have done so for him.

Shrader."

Reuters: IRAN DEPUTY HEALTH MINISTER TESTS POSITIVE FOR CORONAVIRUS - ILNA

https://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2020/02/25/tenerife-hotel-lockdown-italian-guest-tests-positive-coronavirus/
The Italian tourist, whose age has not been disclosed but who comes from Italy's Lombardy region where several people have died. He had reportedly been staying at the hotel for seven days with his wife.

High-level #Spygate officials fired from FBI are trying to throw low-level agents under the bus in a major damage-control campaign they've launched with the help of the New York Times in the wake of the damning IG report on FISA illegalities (not just "abuses,"but serious crimes)

rse's post above of the Northern Italian tourist taking it to the hotel in Spain reminds me so much of reading about "the gay flu," then the skin lesions and then the opportunistic infections in real time in the letters section of the NEJM back in the day as HIV spread across the land. Something new every issue, with multiple "yeah , here too" responses in the following week's letters.
Kinda cool, but pretty much not. (Like Bernie Sanders being the lead D candidate.)
We are watching how a pandemic happens folks. I have no doubt other infected Northern Italians have spread out all over the sunny spots of Europe these past two weeks.
I share this not to alarm anyone,* but so you make your plans--especially travel plans --accordingly. Maybe buy that trip insurance. Things may look very different in another month.

Powerline found a 2015 interview Vox gave with Bernie Sanders that is eye opening.
https://www.vox.com/2015/7/28/9014491/bernie-sanders-vox-conversation
No wonder the Democrats hate him.
