AG Barr blasts Trump's tweets directed at DoJ generally and on the Roger Stone case specifically. The reported White House reaction is even-keeled:
About two hours after the interview aired, the White House issued a statement.
“The President wasn’t bothered by the comments at all and he has the right, just like any American citizen, to publicly offer his opinions. President Trump uses social media very effectively to fight for the American people against injustices in our country, including the fake news. The President has full faith and confidence in Attorney General Barr to do his job and uphold the law,” White House press secretary Stephanie Grisham said.
Well, so far so good. Let's see what the 3 AM tweetstorm brings.
Andrew McCarthy explains the sentencing fiasco.
And set aside the details - thematically, Democrats howling about the sanctity of an independent Department of Justice fall on deaf Republican ears. That independence was quite threadbare when Obama and Lynch whitewashed the Hillary email "investigation". The only good thing you can say about it is they pretended to be discreet, mostly. OK, a couple of inappropriate Obama interviews, that ridiculous tarmac meeting between Lynch and Bill Clinton - just oopsies. And oh, yeah, how did people read the Horowitz report on the FBI/DoJ FISA process with Carter Page and come away assured of the absence of political motivation? Please. The official conclusion of no political motivation is hard to take seriously.
And now we have, from an irate Republican perspective, a bunch of DC establishment "Get Trump BAMN" attorneys showboating with a max sentence for Roger Stone, quite possibly hoping to precipitate this sort of "outrage". And it has been Mission Accomplished. Obama misbehaved, now Trump misbehaves, and away we go.
Angry, divided and confused - this is how Trump wins.
Am I here all alone?

Stone did get the shaft by getting caught up in Mueller's out of control investigation (I won't call it a witch hunt, because that would be unfair to witch hunters). However, texting threats, even if not taken seriously by the one being threatened, qualifies Stone as being the Antonio Brown of the political scene.

When will mccarthy 'accept enemy action' as motivation.
Posted by: Narciso | February 13, 2020 at 08:45 PM
It appears to me that Stone is a nut job who did not actually commit any crimes until he engaged in a coverup of legal activity. He was amazingly stupid to have left a clear written record of that coverup including the ludicrous text message threats that constitutes witness tampering.
Mueller was looking for scalps more than true justice. Stone was and us basically a harmless goof ball. On the other hand, he is guilty of the crimes for which he was charged.
It remains mysterious what exactly the input of DOJ was into the sentencing memorandum. It appears that senior DOJ people told the prosecutors that nine years was too harsh but did not exactly order the memo to be revised. It could be some kind of failure to communicate.

Just had this convo with my wife...
Imagine if Stone had been a Democrat, or any other favored denizen of the political petri dish. Would the recommended sentence have been more or less in that case? Would the jury have been stacked with people out to get him?
Stone is guilty, probably. But he is being treated the way he is because of his political affiliation, not the facts of his guilt. He should get something like 18-24 months, tops, with a lot of that suspended, folding sheets in some minimum security country club.
Dear wife just informed that she would not be voting for Trump. I told her I would never, while I have all my faculties, vote for a Democrat of any stripe. So I guess we cancel each other out.

From the last thread:
I don't think it unusual for people not to have a solid fixed sexual identity until they are in their early 20's. It's a phenomenon well known in girls' colleges where many are "lesbians until graduation".
I would agree with that statement if you replaced "people" with "young women." I doubt it's true for young men. And not unusual doesn't mean common, either.

So Peggy N's heart is all aflutter with Bloomberg now as well. After all, it is St. Valentine's Day. It must have been a helluva party they all went to last night. Each of them went home with their own personal box of chocolate covered talking points.
The pivot from Biden is even worse than the Nordschleife at Nurburgring. Speaking of which I can see a lot of these pseuds crashing and burning like Porsches driven by fat short men lacking in physical gifts, to paraphrase an old girlfriend.
Nominating Bloomberg may be their only choice at getting even close, but replaying his comments over the years is going to make Trump look like Jesse Jackson.

Your 8:33 in the previous was obviously criticizing my opinion. I have two choices. I can accept the criticism constructively or reject it. The fact you, JMH and so far pretty much everyone else refuses to answer the simple question about Rosenstein forces me to reject your criticism.
It’s also not a cherrypicked argument. Here is the link to the ceremony. How does a reasonable, open-minded, patriotic Trump supporter interpret this event? Don’t you think when trying to connect the dots to figure out what is going on with Spygate that knowing the allegiance of one of the major players is kinda important? You get it right it opens up other possible explanations. You get it wrong and everything else you think to be true is probably wrong.

Thats’s a great question. In the dot connecting logic pathway, that question has to come after the question “Does Trump engage in deception/kabuki?”
If the answer is Yes then who knows what Trump really thinks about Comey (who was likely the person who told him the White House was bugged). If the answer is No, then the answer is Trump truly thinks Comey is a sleazebag.
One thing being a software engineer helps out with is understanding how“if/then/else” logic works.

FYI I used those four criteria for a reason. The answer to your question is “TBD”. Once again, the question that has to be answered first is knowing whether or not Trump engages in deception/kabuki. IMO an open minded reasonable person admits to the possibility Trump does indeed resort to deception/kabuki. If Trump engages in deception/kabuki then you have to admit Comey may be doing it as well. That’s why I always stipulate I am speculating. IMO no one who is reasonable and open minded can declare with certainty they know the answer to that question.

If KK's statement of "I had a great afternoon!" was a bit incomplete, allow me to fill it out.
He, CH, Iggy and I met for lunch in Berkeley in a restaurant that hovers over the San Francisco Bay. We were seated at the windows, so the view was great.
Sadly we had low clouds and no sun, but the views were fine -- all three bridges were visible, as were San Francisco, Angel Island and the Marin headlands. Later in the day the clouds lifted a bit and we got a good view of Mt. Tamalpais (Marin County).
We all had a great time. I sure did, and the 3.5 hours went by very quickly. Generally it was upbeat, and no ears here should be burning. We didn't solve all the problems of the world, but there always is next year.
