Democrats are divided by generation, by geography, by cultural sensibilities, and by vastly differing policy agendas.

Good column by Strassel overall, but I don't see the "vastly differing policy agendas." Aside from the ostensible disagreement on "medicare for all," a policy that has zero chance of getting through Congress, there's not a dime's worth of difference between all of the top 5.

Jack is Back!

jimmyk,

Zeldin represents a more blue collar than white collar district on Eastern L.I. plus he is Jewish and a veteran. Very smart and will tackle controversial issues without hesitation. He could resonate with both upstate, L.I. and certain segments of NYC.

I don't know if Stefanik has a constituency outside of upstate NY.

Tom Bowler

Agreed jimmyk. Democrats don't have vastly differing policy agendas. They just disagree on whether or not they still have to hide their agendas from the voters.

Like a'mom, I couldn't access Roger Kimball article in the Spectator either.

Melinda

Kimball-

I see that various pundits are competing to write the political epitaph for Joe ‘son-of-a-bitch‘ Biden. That’s entirely understandable. It’s been clear for some time that Biden is on the threshold of senility, and it is only my charitable disposition that prevents me from speculating about which side of the threshold he occupies.

And then there was the desolation wrought by the Democrats’ impeachment entertainment. From the start, it was clear that the chief casualty of that amateur theatrics was going to be Joe Biden and his sniff, sniff, sniffing son Hunter.

Everyone who is not Bill Kristol understood that the bullet of that purely partisan hit job would miss President Trump. I do not understand why it was not also understood that the Bidens, knee- or perhaps even neck-deep in the influence-peddling nepotism-is-neat corruption biz, would be the prime victims of that bizarre soap opera. Or maybe it was understood and the real point was to give old Joe the shove that he required but to do it covertly. Deep waters.

banner

But after the Iowa tech-meltdown and New Hampshire feather-weight boxing match yesterday, I am amused to discover that no one at the political obit desk has been filing away a story even more obvious than the one about Joe Biden. I mean the political obit/epitaph for Mayor Peter Buttigieg.

As Joe Biden once said of his old (but then-future) boss B. Obama, the 38-year-old former Mayor of South Bend is bright, articulate, and cleans up well. But the idea — an idea that is assiduously circulated by his supporters — that he is ‘moderate’ is ridiculous. In fact, those scrambling for the perfect political epitaph for PB might consider ‘moderate’ in scare quotes.

Remember, Mayor Peter is the openly gay son of the editor and translator of Antonio Gramsci’s Prison Notebooks. Gramsci’s important contribution to the literature of totalitarian tyranny was his idea that Communist dictatorship could only come to free countries by means of a ‘long march through the institutions’, cultural as well as political. The left has pretty well accomplished this with respect to the universities and the elite cultural institutions of the media and the so-called ‘arts community’. Mayor Pete wants to finish the job through such expedients as packing the Supreme Court with six more seats, abolishing the electoral college (it’s ‘undemocratic’, he says), disarming the populace (a precaution tyrants always take), providing a ‘glide path‘ for the government takeover of healthcare, opening up the borders, and forcing taxpayers to foot the bill for college, even for illegal immigrants, whom he also wants to offer amnesty. It’s a start, Comrade.

The truth is, Buttigieg is about as moderate as Bernie Sanders. He comes off as more reasonable than Bernie because he has a more soothing demeanor. (And he comes off as more reasonable than Elizabeth Warren because he does not sound like a screeching harridan whose hectoring voice is like a witch’s nails drawn across a blackboard.) He quotes — and misquotes — scripture. He sounds reasonable, so long as you ponder the timber of his voice and don’t ponder the substance of what he says.

But at the end of the day, this Ivy- and Oxbridge-educated ‘progressive veteran’ is a Gramscian radical. He is there with with Ralph ‘make-’em-comfortable’ Northam on abortion, though he has gotten pretty deft at avoiding the issue. Abortion, in fact, seems to be the one issue on which he wants the government to stay out of our lives. About everything else, it’s all government all the time.

Mayor Pete will have a scintillating couple of months while the media pretends that he might possibly win the nomination. But he can’t, and that will become obvious, I predict, shortly after Super Tuesday. I am really not sure who would have the best chance against Donald Trump in November. I am confident, though, that the sacrificial lamb will not be Mayor Pete Buttigieg.

Excellent, Clarice. The film projector’s frame rate speeds up for Democrats’ slow motion train wreck.

"What a long, strange trip it has been" has nothing on "What a long strange trip it’s likely to be!”

Democrats forged the instrument of their own destruction — themselves — and I don’t mind a bit.

I don't see them either, jimmyk, but within the party, I think they do argue over such things. The progs talk about neoliberals in a similar way to how some on the right talk about neoconservatives.

One observation on the Dem nomination selection process.

I don’t think it’s meant to function as an efficient selection process but rather a cash maximization effort to keep as many donors adding to the overall pot for as long as possible, as in through the convention, for the Remora Class. From that perspective, it’s damn near perfected.

And has been designed as such since roughly 1992.

That is an important point about being the translator into English of Gramsci's work although as usual I think Kimball misstates Gramsci's point by making it about Communism with a capital 'C' instead of a small 'c'.

Everything in kimball's academic background makes it clear he is quite familiar with the Human Devt Society vision, but methinks his primary paymasters always want 'communism' with a little 'c' to be linked to the USSR and Mao.

Good article otherwise.

James D. that we were far better off before it came to be.

Past versus present news cycle is not an "either-or".

Things were bad before and may be badder now, but they never were good. Coverage that previously was slim, deferential and superficial now is malicious, misdirected, and noisy.

Never has it been news. News is what you need to know to plan your better future. Measure the past and present by that yardstick and both are found wanting.

--Re the old time Democrats that you referenced, I think that those were different times. I think if you could transport Nancy Pelosi back to that era she would quickly adapt to the progs of the time and if you could bring Humphrey into 2020 he would be indistinguishable from your basic leftist Senator today. I think the conditions create the people more than the other way around.--

Possibly, but it's not like there weren't commies in the Dem party during Humphrey's time. There were and he fought them.
And the modern South seems to be an indicator that if a party leaves its people the people leave the party.
No doubt there are some who change their views radically and most no doubt change their views slightly as the zeitgeist of a party changes. But mostly the oldsters get kicked out and get replaced by the newsters who in due time become siliconed, botoxed, toxic boils on the bottom of the body politic.

--For what it is worth I thought the Taibbi piece in Rolling Stone was great. Yes, it is written from the perspective of someone who thinks that Bill Clinton was the greatest Republican President since Lincoln (and he would not mean that as a compliment), but it illustrated how seriously messed up the Democrats are.--

I, for one, don't need a vampire squid of a journalist like Taibbi to tell me how seriously messed up the Democrats are when they already go to such absurd lengths to make it as plain as the squid on your face that they are, as a party, bat-shit crazy [or in Andrew Yang's case, bat-soup crazy].
The prison journal of a Solzhenitsyn who sees the light is sublime. The journal of a zek who hopes the worst of his fellow zeks take over and exterminate the rest is ridiculous.

Ask your daughter what policies of Trump she disagrees with. Not his tweets which she has probably never read, not the descriptions on fake news, but his policies.

Is she angry at so many people working - particularly minorities? Does she hate the middle class tax breaks? You know everything he has done, so ask her specific questions.

I've yet to meet a Trump hater who can name the policies they hate. The presidency is not about personality. It's about leadership.

Tom Bowler, one of the biggest problems that the FULL COMMIE PARTY has, is that the "leadership" is getting very old, and almost all of the party who are under 90 years old, are ALL IN for COMMUNISM.
It's what they've been taught.

Now that you mention it, the Democrats look a lot like the old Soviet Union Communist Party just before the collapse. But I wouldn't say the old leadership is any less COMMIE than the young. It's just that most of them are smart enough to know that it's not politically wise to admit it.

But barely. I do think that a lot of Democrats believed they had arrived in 2016, and that it was safe to drop the mask. All the pieces were in place, like the media, federal agencies like the DOJ, IRS, FBI, CIA, and the State Department were helping Hillary get elected. Scary to think, it was just about game over.

New thread by the way.

The Infamous Ignatz

JM Hanes

Ignatz:

"I, for one, don't need a vampire squid of a journalist like Taibbi to tell me how seriously messed up the Democrats are"

You're not his target audience. I'm encouraged every time someone sees a bit of light on the other side. It obviously doesn't turn them into instant Republicans, but think of all the people who never hear any of that in the news they absorb. I like a well-founded diatribe from like-minded folks as much as the next person, but I also find them dispiriting because I end up thinking that it's too bad that no liberal is ever going to read it. It may be good for keeping up our own morale, but it makes zero inroads elsewhere.

Far too many people just throw their hands up and say you'll never convince a liberal to switch sides, or they're all lost, or they're all evil (not accusing you of this). I think that's just an easy excuse for not making an effort to win people to the cause. I know I'm not going to turn my liberal in-law into a Trump supporter, but I can at least challenge conventional wisdom on the left. I think that's important for people to hear, and not just for the person you're talking to, but for any of the others who are quietly listening to that conversation. There are now several things that my in-law will have to stop and think about before saying automatically. Plus, the more you do it, the easier it gets.
