In the Iowa Update du Jour Bernie Sanders will claim the popular vote (both rounds) and may eke out a win in the SDE tally, or State Delegate Equivalents. Apparently Team Sanders organized new satellite caucuses and is turning in great results from them.
Uh, satellite caucuses? Say what? Let's give credit where due - the Iowa State Democrats really leaned into accommodating Bernie and implementing Operation Own Goal:
In particular, the campaign focused heavily on bringing people out to the satellite caucuses that were held across the state and in other parts of the world for Iowans who couldn’t make it to the 7 p.m. caucuses. This was the first year the party hosted satellite caucuses, and no other campaign seems to have invested serious resources in turning those voters out. With 41 state delegates available to be swept up, and fewer than 25 delegates currently separating Pete Buttigieg and Sanders, they could end up making the difference when the delegate count is finalized.
The first caucus was held in Tbilisi, Georgia, of all places and reports are that Sanders led the delegates there. Another was held in St. Petersburg, Florida, where former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg is heavily on the airwaves. The first in Iowa was held at a UFCW union hall in Ottumwa, with Sanders winning all 14 of the final votes to net four precinct delegates, a relatively large pickup. At Drake University in Des Moines, workers and students went overwhelmingly for Sanders, giving him five delegates and Sen. Elizabeth Warren two, meaning that he netted five relative to Buttigieg....
In all, there were 87 satellite caucuses. According to Iowa Democratic Party rules, the total delegate value of those caucuses will be determined by satellite turnout and in proportion to the total number of people who came out to vote in the regular caucuses. They are to be worth some percent of the total, meaning that the four delegates Sanders won in Ottumwa, for instance, could actually rise or shrink in the final analysis. But what we know about those caucuses suggests that Sanders may have won those caucuses by enough to overcome his deficit with Buttigieg, which at the time of writing sits at 23.987 delegates with 86 percent of the precincts reporting.
Great. Now let's have the Democrats rewrite the rules for health care and pharmaceutical development.
IN OTHER NEWS: The sun rose in the East and the Senate acquitted Trump. The mini-surprises were a Romney defection but no aisle-crossing from Manchin (D, WV) or Sinema (D, AZ).
And a man nobody has ever heard of, except the other side. He's the other side's worst nightmare. This guy goes down into dungeons and basements; he'll find a document, no matter what. He’s the most legitimate human being. He’s the hardest worker. He's unbelievable. He took tremendous abuse. I mean, abuse.
The -- the media and, you know, the other side, and the bad ones, the leakers, the liars, the dirty cops -- they wanted to destroy him. They tried. They got close, but he wouldn’t let it happen. And, honestly, in a certain way, he was the first one. Wouldn’t you say, Jim and Mark and everybody? This was the first guy. He came out of nowhere. He’s saying, “These people are corrupt.” He's still saying it. And he was unbelievable. Devin Nunes. He was unbelievable. Unbelievable. (Applause.) That's so true, Devin.
He'd come in and say -- I didn't even know him, I just heard there were like -- there was this congressman who kept going into a basement -- into files. (Laughter.) He knew something was wrong. You felt it, right? And now we know a lot more than we knew then, right? You never thought it was as bad as it is. And hopefully we're going to take care of things, because we can never, ever allow this to happen again. (Applause.)

Sounds to me like this is reinforcing the theory that Team Trump called Nunes over to the White House to show them evidence that Obama had been spying on the Trump campaign. Nunes then broke the news to the world.
The basement Trump is referring to is in the White House and the files he is referring to are the ones Ezra Cohen Watnick showed Nunes.

Everybody keeps talking about "next year's SOTU," and, being the pedantic putz that I am, I just have to remind everyone -- next SOTU is 2022. After an election year, we have an inaugural address, either Trump's Second Inaugural Address, or some Disaster's First Inaugural Address. But, in either case, the venue is completely different, and San Fran Nan will have nothing to do with it, whether she is Speaker of the House or not.

On one hand, Trump's winning base is still solid AND he's picked up more supporters over time. So he MUST have a winning hand.
OTOH, the '18 midterm showed surprising Dem strength despite their vile nature. Polls consistently show that plenty of our former countrymen are hornswoggled by MSM agitprop. So there's every reason to believe that Dems can win, esp if you use your imagination to think of the cheating they'll be willing to commit.
Conclusion: too close to call at this point. (But in my heart of hearts, I think Trump will take it!)

Porch —
Yes there are a number of election forecast models that do not use polls, but things like gasoline prices, unemployment rate etc. A guy named Fair I believe from Yale has one of those and has done well with it.
I am somewhat skeptical of those models. They start with the basic assumption that neither candidates nor campaigns matter and the election can be foretold well in advance of the conventions based on whatever data points they base the model on. This seems dubious to me.
However I assume that that sort of model would be very good news for Trump. The economy is just booming, which is normally an excellent harbinger for the incumbent. But these are not normal times and Trump is far from a conventional candidate.
One other very simplistic model is to assume the White House rotates between the parties every eight years. Since 1952 this has been a valid predictor except in 1980 and 1988. If this holds true, 2020 should be a Republican year.
But, as you pointed out, I did not predict 2016 very well I am going to be cautious in making any predictions about this election. There are a lot of encouraging signs but as Professor Reynolds says, don’t get cocky, kid.

Do you think dungeons and basements was referring to the Capitol Building? If so how exactly would Nunes discover evidence of the Obama administration’s FISA abuse in the depths of the Capitol Building?

Surprising to who? It showed that Trump supporters didn't vote in the midterms. And midterms nowdays often go that way.
MANY Trump 2016 voters were first time ever voters, and the current people attending the rallies are of a similar ilk, or people who haven't voted in years. They will vote in the 2020 presidential.
I think illegal voting and vote harvesting are going to be huge issues, and of course, Ds can win, but I don't see that happening with anybody currently in the running to be their candidate, short of the economy tanking between now and November.

I wanted to add a note to this particular observation with regard to the political decision-making in China's coronavirus response:
For millennia in China and South Korea, natural disasters were seen aa a manifestation of the gods' disapproval of an emperor or king's moral & practical fitness for the role of monarch. Emperors went to extraordinary, often flamboyant, lengths to appease the appropriate divinities and the public, because it was considered a very dangerous position to be in, vis a vis his people. I don't know if Mao managed to snuff out all such artifacts of Chinese civilization, but I wonder if or how it might affect Xi, not just as political head of the communist party, but also as China's newly made de facto emperor.

JMH, re the CCP wiping out all Chinese artifacts... no. I had Spence for Chinese History. The typical empire is a wave of barbarians from the north who conquer, flourish, then lose the Mandate of Heaven in three generations. As a further note, when my grandfather got transferred from Normandy logistics to China logistics (day after VE Day), he ever met Mao. I’ve seen pictures of him with Chennault (Flying Tigers), Stilwell, Chang Kai Shek (the Peanut), etc. but he never met Mao. Mao conquered China from the North. Think Mao conquers, Deng consolidates, Xi loses the mandate. There are living people in China that can see this, especially in the boondocks and new middle class. China is bigger than the dynasty, the Chinese people know this. Expect a warlord period (melinda’s princes) before the new stasis settles in.

Melissa on FB:
Why Nancy Pelosi's behavior offends me:
For years, men were able to justify their treatment of women as "hysterical" "emotional" and "irrational," because women would allow their emotions to outpace their reason. All a man had to do was stay calm, and even if a man was incorrect, the frustration that would drive a woman to turn into a shrieking termagant was enough to enable men to collectively pat themselves on the back for their cool judgment, while legally classifying married women with "insane persons and children."
On this premise alone, women were treated as second-class citizens. We were not allowed to vote, own property or have our own credit. If our husbands wanted control over our money, he got it. Illiterate black male slaves got the vote 54 years before educated white women did. Women were not allowed to serve on juries because we were too frail to withstand the emotional vicissitudes of hearing about criminal behavior such as rape or murder. Apparently, we could be victims of rape and murder. We were just too fragile to hear about rape and murder in a courtroom, or to mete out justice to the perpetrators of such crimes.
Now, after literally centuries of fighting for equal rights, women are finally a force to be reckoned with. Women are succeeding in school, in church, in business, in law, in medicine and in space. We are engineers, rocket scientists, and community leaders. We're taken seriously. Our voices are heard. In America, we are only limited by our own ambition and imagination.
And then . . . we get Nancy Pelosi. A woman who has clearly allowed her Trump Derangement Syndrome to ride roughshod over her ability to control her behavior. When she wasn't twitching like a bored toddler in church, she was orchestrating the responses of her white-clad Congressional minions, a group of irrational Stepford Wives also not well-respected for their ability to curtail their mouths at the behest of their reason. Tearing up that speech behind the President's back . . . while he was still speaking . . . was a tawdry, stupid, emotional stunt, unworthy of a person in a leadership position.
Nancy Pelosi embodies the characteristics that every thinking man fears -- men who say they do not want to work with women because women are petty, spiteful, catty, and vindictive. They can't control themselves. They don't know how to put the team first. Thank you, Nancy. Your conduct as the Speaker of the House of Representatives - an office you should be honored beyond breathing to hold -- was childish, petulant and unworthy of the office. Instead of showing the world what female leadership could look like, you dragged female leadership kicking and screaming back into the Victorian era.
The fact that most men are blaming your behavior on your liberal beliefs, rather than on your hormones or your gender, is a tribute to men everywhere.

Someone above described Trump’s address as "dark".
Not me. On vacation I reread "Count of Monte Cristo."
First 50 pages of joy and future. Then a small group of people, for different reasons — for love, money, political advancement, etc. — undermined all he cared for and cast Edmond Dantés into prison.
The rest of the book, many pages, is spent not on revenge, not on one persons’ impression of God’s will, not in anger, but on clearing the slate, with purpose and resolve.
The result was up to the perpetrators. They did it to themselves.
The deep state has brought this on themselves. It is not dark. It is not revenge. It is not God’s will. It is what will be.
The wheels of justice grind slow, but they grind exceeding small.
Today’s address was a celebration of life and of goodness. Let it be.

Now where have I seen that before...Oh, Nicola Sturgeon, I don't think you're going to be the last politician to see a wingman go down in flames:

Trying to get caught up on a busy day.
“Sorry NY JOMers but I love that there are actually going to be be consequences for this driver's license f*ckery.”
Believe it or not, I do too. I checked and my Global entry expires May 2021. Hopefully the stupid sanctuary law is repealed by then. At least there’s a decent chance that Rs get control back of at least one NY state legislature.
Happy Birthday to JiB.

I just realized Barry Sotero is Tom Friedman with a round brown head rather than a flat white one.

I can totally see how he was doing 75 lb curls with those guns though.🙄

I loved this from the Redstate piece:
This, to use a metaphor, was the Highland chieftain setting afire to the cross on the hilltop calling all of his vassals and kinsmen to gather and rally to his clan to the cause.
That's what I meant about recruitment. Imagine all the folks who are considering running for a public office. The president just showed them that the good guys are showing up for the fight and winning.

Sen. Ditzie Hirono just claimed Trump was not acquitted because it was a "rigged trial."

Stephanie:
Well, I'll go with the last paragraph in the post on Pelosi's behavior.
I actually tried to add a comment at Don Surber's site, without success, alas, about his assertion that Nancy Pelosi's behavior reflected badly on women. Jeez. I can't remember my exact wording, but the gist of my comment was that I resented being expected to applaud Pelosi's ascension to the Speaker's chair as a great advance for women, when I was horrified, and I resent being tarred with her abysmal behavior now. I despised her then; I despise her now. I regard her as neither role model nor inspiration, quite the contrary. I think it's a cryin' shame when people still push the idea that one woman somehow represents all women, or womanhood, although there are plenty on the left who try to make that kind of hay. I don't deny psychological differences between men and women, but that's really a different subject, I think. This is really about gender stereotyping.Posted by: JM Hanes | February 06, 2020 at 09:15 PM
JMH,
I suggest that Elizabeth Holmes (Thernos) represent ALL businesswomen. :)

I just spent a good long while reading the 1300+ posts made while The Horde listened to the President today. Lots of great one-liners, and they loved it as much as we did.
HOWEVER, I DID LEARN ONE THING. AG Barr never referred to a "Durham Report." Jack Straw said that Barr said that "when Durham finishes with his investigations and turns what he has found over to us, it will probably be early summer."
He never said a report. That was apparently the phrasing of someone on the internet or TV.
I hope this makes people feel a bit better.

Every single person involved should be fired, blacklisted from ever working in any educational institution or in any position with any public authority of any kind for life, and have their pensions stripped, from the teacher on up to the superintendent of the school district.
