Trump made news by shaking hands in Tennessee despite the coronavirus scare and his own history as a germaphobe. By way of contrast, Pence is going with what is described as an elbow bump but looks to me like a forearm shiver.
I like the forearm shiver. It's cloth on cloth during cold/flu season and there is less twisting than with a full elbow bump (that is my sore shoulder typing).
But on to the emerging culture war! Oldsters, especially those of a conservative temperament, will not be inclined to let go of the handshake. Youngsters, especially young Democrats, will see a double play here. They can show off their hipness AND take a shot at Trump by switching too... well, something. But what?
My free and excellent advice to DNC strategerists is to get in front of this. Teams Biden and Sanders should agree on a handshake substitute and promote it on center stage of their next debate. Message: Our party is united for change, positive leadership and a healthier America. Possibly regrettable subtext - Our party is nominating two geezers in the highest risk group for COVID19. DNC spin doctors (and maybe some real doctors) will want to manage that.
As to the substitute, I see three main candidates. First up (and off) is the Wuhan Shuffle, aka the "fistshake". Mutual foot taps? Please. Youngsters, especially in soccer mad countries, will love the Wuhan Shuffle. But c'mon - how will that work at a cocktail party? After two hip replacement and two drinks, I won't be doing a successful foot tap with anyone. Totally NOT recommended for old timers like me, Joe or Bernie. (Joe was a good HS/college athlete though; he might be tempted. Bernie would be nuts to try. (Yes, I'd pay to watch if they pre-announced it as a PPV event.)
The fist bump was studied in Britain during the Ebola scare in 2014 (during which I introduced my Ebola air kiss. More on that in a bit, with the emphasis on "moron"). Only ten to twenty percent of the bug transmission associated with a conventional handshake. Its better and don't be a science denier!
Joe Biden should push for the fist bump, aka the terrorist fist jab, as a reminder of his Obama legacy. Bernie will spot this problem and will no doubt be asking his advisers "What did Che do?".
The next entrant is the Ebola Elbow, which the WHO was out first with in 2014. It hasn't caught on but the Pence variation seems more manageable.
Ebola was a poor disease for the roll out of a handshake alternative. The disease was not THAT contagious and it was pretty easy for folks to know if they'd been kn close contact with a dead African while in Africa. Consequently it didn't break out in the West, or really anywhere other than where it originated.
Obviously the coronavirus is a different story. Politically, the media is hyping every little thing in an attempt to derail Trump and its hard to trust them (although life is full of surprises). Some on the right have tried the opposite, minimizing everything as Democratic fear-mongering. Others on the right have pointed out that a crisis is an opportunity to show leadership.
Well. Where are not in a good place to have a calm national conversation and I'm pretty sure we'll end up with Republicans wearing flag lapels and Democrats doing fist bumps. Too bad - I'm not a handshake fan myself.
ABOUT THAT EBOLA AIR KISS: Back in 2014 I would greet the ladies at cocktail parties with my Oh-So-Euro "Ebola air kiss". Har de har. Time moved on and I had to update it to the "Ebola/Zika air kiss". Now I deploy the "Ebola/Zika/Coronavirus air kiss" on the increasingly rare occasions I am invited to a social event. I should note it has been effective as an auto-quarantine tactic; surprisingly few people at a cocktail party want to chat with the weirdo in the corner mumbling about Ebola and Zika.
So, no air kisses for Joe and Bernie. NOT on my recommended list.
The Dem sharks have to smell blood in the water.
I still predict that Cuomo makes a move, and probably ends up the nominee, but he'll have to slit Hillary's throat in the process, with the possible help of Tom Fitton.

I hadn't either but I read that Danny Gatton considered him the pinnacle of guitarists so I looked him up. His dexterity with both hands was amazing. His idol was Chet Atkins who he got to play with and can be seen on youtube. A lot of Merle Travis influence too.
He used a seven string guitar later on.

Sure, but he never gets personally associated with the corruption, including that of his hand-picked economic czar, Alain Kalayeros, who's headed to prison. Meanwhile, he has carefully cultivated a moderate rep while being a completely solid leftist, and will talk tough New Yawker street lingo, which Dems will eat right up, thinking that's what's needed to go up against The Don.

Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19): Role of Chest CT in Diagnosis and Management.
Li Y, et al. AJR Am J Roentgenol. 2020.
Show full citation
Abstract
OBJECTIVE: The objective of our study was to determine the misdiagnosis rate of radiologists for coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) and evaluate the performance of chest CT in the diagnosis and management of COVID-19. The CT features of COVID-19 are reported and compared with the CT features of other viruses to familiarize radiologists with possible CT patterns.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: This study included the first 51 patients with a diagnosis of COVID-19 infection confirmed by nucleic acid testing (23 women and 28 men; age range, 26-83 years) and two patients with adenovirus (one woman and one man; ages, 58 and 66 years). We reviewed the clinical information, CT images, and corresponding image reports of these 53 patients. The CT images included images from 99 chest CT examinations, including initial and follow-up CT studies. We compared the image reports of the initial CT study with the laboratory test results and identified CT patterns suggestive of viral infection.
RESULTS: COVID-19 was misdiagnosed as a common infection at the initial CT study in two inpatients with underlying disease and COVID-19. Viral pneumonia was correctly diagnosed at the initial CT study in the remaining 49 patients with COVID-19 and two patients with adenovirus. These patients were isolated and obtained treatment. Ground-glass opacities (GGOs) and consolidation with or without vascular enlargement, interlobular septal thickening, and air bronchogram sign are common CT features of COVID-19. The The "reversed halo" sign and pulmonary nodules with a halo sign are uncommon CT features. The CT findings of COVID-19 overlap with the CT findings of adenovirus infection. There are differences as well as similarities in the CT features of COVID-19 compared with those of the severe acute respiratory syndrome.
CONCLUSION: We found that chest CT had a low rate of missed diagnosis of COVID-19 (3.9%, 2/51) and may be useful as a standard method for the rapid diagnosis of COVID-19 to optimize the management of patients. However, CT is still limited for identifying specific viruses and distinguishing between viruses.

I presume people are stocking up on necessities out of some fear that they'll be homebound for some very long period of time. It all seems way out of proportion to the risk. But maybe a better theory is that it's just an old-fashioned run: If you see everyone else doing it, you better too, because the shelves will be bare. Still, this isn't Venezuela. Markets will respond if they're allowed to.

How does any sane person listen to a prog demanding that abortion clinics not be subject to essentially any safety standards and not come away thinking they are ghouls and not even honest ghouls? Aren't these the same damn morons who scream 'back alley abortions' at the drop of hat? But if a state tries to demand even minimal competency of the doc or safety for the patient it's infringing a right.
It seems to be the actual killing of the baby that is the only thing truly sacrosanct.
The only thing true about 'safe, legal and rare' was legal.

"One source told me that five of the seven employees in his office have had flu symptoms over the past week. Three of them have quarantined themselves at home. The others continue to work as usual. None, though, have gone to be tested. Their primary fear is that if they don’t already have the coronavirus, they might become infected at the hospital."
I guess that's a rational response in Iran, if you're sick and not dying stay away from the hospital.
Of course, if most people in Iran think like that the virus will keep spreading and not show up in the statistics except in the case of dead bodies.

Ignatz,
If John Roberts or any other Justice votes against the basic health requirements in this law, it tells me all I need to know about what they really think of women. One of the strongest arguments for Roe v. Wade was to get rid of the back alley abortionists and provide a healthier, safer way for women who choose abortion. But aren't they advocating a situation similar to the "back alley abortionist" by opposing the requirements in this law?

As far as I know the D talking point about Americans paying the highest prices for pharmaceuticals is true. The counter argument of “muh innovation” also has validity. But somewhere along the line China and India got 80% of our production. Now we not only still pay the highest prices but we are incredibly vulnerable to interruption from trade wars, real wars and disasters real or imagined.
One may not merely boycott lifesaving drugs.
We could also be providing our kids and grandkids upper middle class lifestyles.

The moon is absolutely gorgeous! Don’t miss it!
We're still two days away from a full moon but it was a clear sky here when I was walking Teddy and it was huge in the sky.
I'm in a real quandary because tonight's NBA game is terrible but Hubie Brown, who understands the game, is announcing and I just can't pass that up to listen to McCoy Tyner. Tomorrow's game, Lakers against the Clip Joint, is a battle between two of the best but announced by Fatassed Mark Jackson and the even more irritating human lightbulb Jeff Van Gundy. Add in a fucking time change and life is less than optimal. He might be a dimwit every time he opens his yap on any non basketball topic but LeBron is having an amazing season at 37.

narc,
Why are all source materials from china?
Do you mean pharmaceuticals? If so, the answer is simple.
The US focuses on high "valued added" materials, including pharma. That's where the profits are.
The precursors (or building blocks) are old technology, and low margin. So these are farmed out to the lowest bidder while quality is good enough. I question whether the quality is there, but that's the reasoning.
That's true in pharma, semiconductor materials, polymers, fine chemicals, and all the rest.

“ Rewatch this clip.
Then imagine Joe Biden going up against this living legend of the debate stage. It would be a crime scene.”

Some twitter dude;
It's not over the next two months but overall. I didn't actually see these numbers when I clicked on the link to AHA, so who knows?

Sean davis decomplexified that one it assumes 350,000 cases now

Might be interesting to see the comparison to a bad flu season rather than last year.
Being the cynical bastard I am, this strikes me as a lobby building a case for gubbmint cheese.

--Sean davis decomplexified that one it assumes 350,000 cases now--
No, Davis was responding to the original guy's misunderstanding that it was a projection of cases over the next two months, not for the entire event. They were both wrong.
