Trump made news by shaking hands in Tennessee despite the coronavirus scare and his own history as a germaphobe. By way of contrast, Pence is going with what is described as an elbow bump but looks to me like a forearm shiver.
I like the forearm shiver. It's cloth on cloth during cold/flu season and there is less twisting than with a full elbow bump (that is my sore shoulder typing).
But on to the emerging culture war! Oldsters, especially those of a conservative temperament, will not be inclined to let go of the handshake. Youngsters, especially young Democrats, will see a double play here. They can show off their hipness AND take a shot at Trump by switching too... well, something. But what?
My free and excellent advice to DNC strategerists is to get in front of this. Teams Biden and Sanders should agree on a handshake substitute and promote it on center stage of their next debate. Message: Our party is united for change, positive leadership and a healthier America. Possibly regrettable subtext - Our party is nominating two geezers in the highest risk group for COVID19. DNC spin doctors (and maybe some real doctors) will want to manage that.
As to the substitute, I see three main candidates. First up (and off) is the Wuhan Shuffle, aka the "fistshake". Mutual foot taps? Please. Youngsters, especially in soccer mad countries, will love the Wuhan Shuffle. But c'mon - how will that work at a cocktail party? After two hip replacement and two drinks, I won't be doing a successful foot tap with anyone. Totally NOT recommended for old timers like me, Joe or Bernie. (Joe was a good HS/college athlete though; he might be tempted. Bernie would be nuts to try. (Yes, I'd pay to watch if they pre-announced it as a PPV event.)
The fist bump was studied in Britain during the Ebola scare in 2014 (during which I introduced my Ebola air kiss. More on that in a bit, with the emphasis on "moron"). Only ten to twenty percent of the bug transmission associated with a conventional handshake. Its better and don't be a science denier!
Joe Biden should push for the fist bump, aka the terrorist fist jab, as a reminder of his Obama legacy. Bernie will spot this problem and will no doubt be asking his advisers "What did Che do?".
The next entrant is the Ebola Elbow, which the WHO was out first with in 2014. It hasn't caught on but the Pence variation seems more manageable.
Ebola was a poor disease for the roll out of a handshake alternative. The disease was not THAT contagious and it was pretty easy for folks to know if they'd been kn close contact with a dead African while in Africa. Consequently it didn't break out in the West, or really anywhere other than where it originated.
Obviously the coronavirus is a different story. Politically, the media is hyping every little thing in an attempt to derail Trump and its hard to trust them (although life is full of surprises). Some on the right have tried the opposite, minimizing everything as Democratic fear-mongering. Others on the right have pointed out that a crisis is an opportunity to show leadership.
Well. Where are not in a good place to have a calm national conversation and I'm pretty sure we'll end up with Republicans wearing flag lapels and Democrats doing fist bumps. Too bad - I'm not a handshake fan myself.
ABOUT THAT EBOLA AIR KISS: Back in 2014 I would greet the ladies at cocktail parties with my Oh-So-Euro "Ebola air kiss". Har de har. Time moved on and I had to update it to the "Ebola/Zika air kiss". Now I deploy the "Ebola/Zika/Coronavirus air kiss" on the increasingly rare occasions I am invited to a social event. I should note it has been effective as an auto-quarantine tactic; surprisingly few people at a cocktail party want to chat with the weirdo in the corner mumbling about Ebola and Zika.
So, no air kisses for Joe and Bernie. NOT on my recommended list.
I would trust Emperor Xi's stats before the ayatollahs'.
I agree Iggy. Not only is the Iranian system failing, but apparently everyday Iranians don't want to interact with it either. Not a lot of trust floating around over there.
I mean I can understand the logic of thinking you have the flu, maybe even Covid-19, and not feeling bad enough to confirm it by going to a hospital. If the symptoms are bearable why take the risk of going to the hospital and catching something worse.
That lab in the above article is thinking of building an at home test for people who think they have the virus but feel well enough to stay home and self-isolate. And they cite the same risk of visiting the hospital.
If the country can build up enough capacity of test kits to cover the immediate needs we can then move to South Korea style drive-throughs or mail kits when the supply of kits is large enough.

“ In a job like that you see the dirty work of Empire at close quarters. The wretched prisoners huddling in the stinking cages of the lock-ups, the grey, cowed faces of the long-term convicts, the scarred buttocks of the men who had been Bogged with bamboos – all these oppressed me with an intolerable sense of guilt. But I could get nothing into perspective. I was young and ill-educated and I had had to think out my problems in the utter silence that is imposed on every Englishman in the East. I did not even know that the British Empire is dying, still less did I know that it is a great deal better than the younger empires that are going to supplant it.”-Shooting an Elephant, George Orwell

Clarice: the veal was excellent. Like butter. There were just five of us so there’s one chop left over. What a shame...
I followed the recipe pretty close. Against my natural instincts. Everything was fine and apparently everyone enjoyed the veal. I still need to follow my instincts next time. I settled on a mag of ‘06 Fontodi Chianti Classico Riserva that was very complimentary but probably still needed about another five years aging.

Looking around for test providers: Quest Diagnostics and LabCorp, the two biggest diagnostic test providers in the US will start accepting Covid-19 tests on Monday. Several other groups have made or will be making tests available. I can't find a list of all of them, but it looks like large hospital systems and medical universities will also ramp up.
It's a public service thing. They don't expect to make a lot of money on the tests. The commercial labs may lose money on other tests they normally do as volume may drop as people avoid doctor's offices and hospitals.
I think the backlog will be cleared rather quickly now and we will see a sharp rise in confirmed cases with the testing requirements loosened. Get enough capacity available and the prior CDC rationing will disappear.

One cool thing from last night: I used fresh homegrown herbs for the sauce. Chives and rosemary from the greenhouse and some thyme that has been springing forth (if you will) on an outdoor pot from last summer. I deglazed with sparkling wine and used canned chicken stock because I was out of veal stock. Because of you introducing me to Dartagnan, that won’t be a problem in the future. Thanks, chef.

We don't really know how far or wide Covid-19 will spread. Nor do we know how accurate China's numbers are.
But if they are anywhere near accurate, after 2 1/2 months, China is experiencing about ~140 new cases per day and it's declining rapidly. If they're at ~90,000 it's going to take them about 1,000 years to get to the numbers that AHA/U of Nebraska dude was talking about for us.

Iggy,
I've seen some other equally poor projections from other sources. They usually make faulty assumptions about the rate of growth.
I read them and they look interesting and then I start to see the flaws in their thinking. One looked interesting until I saw that she was relying upon a doubling of the cases every six days. That's not happening anywhere yet.
I saw another dire forecast and then with a little digging discovered it was based on a survey conducted by a nurse's association poll of their members. Substitute "proselytizing union" for "association" as I looked further and it's a "join the union or die" sign-up campaign.
And you can't rely on static analysis for any of this. Some people are starting their projections with 1/3 of hospital beds are usually empty. Figure out how long it will take to fill those beds and that's when the crisis starts. Well, yes, but how many elective surgeries will be cancelled or delayed.
There are just too many variables.

Posted by: cathyf | March 08, 2020 at 01:38 AM
My alarm clock is an old one with a battery back-up. It uses a button battery, a DL2430, that nobody makes anymore. It used to work great. If the power failed it would still wake you up on time and when the power came back it would have the correct time since it was still counting.
But it's like a two-handed thing when you need to reset the time. Depress these two buttons simultaneously while you toggle a third one. I think the contacts have oxidized over the years because you can follow the instructions and nothing happens.
I don't use the alarm function anymore. It's more of a should I get up or just turn over clock.
On the rare days I have to get up early I use an old cellphone. I can't make calls with it but it still connects with the network and pulls in a time check. As long as it has the correct time the alarm logic sits on the chip and counts down on its own.
Posted by: jim nj | March 08, 2020 at 01:47 AM

Yes. Chlorine and ammonia together is bad. That was my point. Most of us know that. Some don't.

Sorry Hoyden,
Thomas Malthus. An early economist who noted that the best agricultural land was already in use and could only expand at an arithmetic rate while population was growing at an exponential rate. You could expand agriculture into more marginal land at a lower yield. Diminishing rates of production would lead to starvation of the greatly increased population.
A brilliant observation at the time that foresaw absolutely nothing of the real future. Smaller families. A green revolution in farming with better techniques and mechanization.
His predictions turned out to be so wrong that subsequent dire predictions that turned out to be wrong came to be known as Malthusian in nature.
He's like the Darwin of dismal science. I think he was even the reason that economics got tagged as the "dismal science."
Around 1900 one third of the US population was engaged in agricultural activity. Now it's less then 3% of our population, but the rate of production is several magnitudes higher.
In the 80's we were facing "peak oil" and were poised to run out. Now we have found more oil still in the ground waiting to be used than we have used in the prior century.
Rinse and repeat for everything else we were supposed to run out of. Something gets scarce, the price goes up, people look for more because of the higher price and, lo and behold, they find more of it.
Ergo "Malthusian" predictions of dire consequences are always wrong. We don't always know why immediately, but the illogical will show up sooner or later.

Today, @Gov BillLee and I watched the spirits of Cookeville be uplifted by @realDonaldTrump’s visit. Thank you for caring so deeply for the people of Tennessee.

We have a perfectly coordinated and fine tuned plan at the White House for our attack on CoronaVirus. We moved VERY early to close borders to certain areas, which was a Godsend. V.P. is doing a great job. The Fake News Media is doing everything possible to make us look bad. Sad!

Mrs. peter and I have had the worst luck watching movies lately. A week ago, I took a DVD out of the library "The Souvenir." Highly regarded by the critics it was slow moving and boring about a film-maker and her relationship with a heroin using idiot. We stuck with it until the end, hoping something would happen.
Last night, I googled "Best movies on Netflix" and came up with "Marriage Story," essentially a re-make of Kramer v Kramer with nothing new to add. Awful.

Didn't Larry Craig have to resign his Senate seat because he used a version of the "Wuhan handshake"?

From the twitter thread amom linked @ 9:22
The real existential threat is capitalism, and not outbreaks.
8+ years and at least $250k worth of higher education to produce such utter i ignorance. It’s almost kind of impressive.

Good morning everyone
Great pieces Clarice. What I find so annoying is how Walton can come up with this sloppy opinion passed off as fact, when it’s just the opposite. Why can’t they read in detail what’s put before them to decide before running off at the mouth?

Surprises do happen. Maybe you’ll get a mention, a future invite or even a hat out of the deal? Happy for C&E meeting the president! Can’t wait to hear all about it!

jane,
Did they win one of those texted donation requests and he would pick contributors for lunch at Mar-e - Lago? I get like 8 of them a day. Often wondered if people actually got picked.
